Detached Eddy Simulation of Flap Side-Edge Flow

Detached Eddy Simulation (DES) of flap side-edge flow was performed with a wing and half-span flap configuration used in previous experimental and numerical studies. The focus of the study is the unsteady flow features responsible for the production of far-field noise. The simulation was performed at a Reynolds number (based on the main wing chord) of 3.7 million. Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) simulations were performed as a precursor to the DES. The results of these precursor simulations match previous experimental and RANS results closely. Although the present DES simulations have not reached statistical stationary yet, some unsteady features of the developing flap side-edge flowfield are presented. In the final paper it is expected that statistically stationary results will be presented including comparisons of surface pressure spectra with experimental data.

Impact of the isotope effect on divertor detachment and pedestal structure in DIII-D

Dedicated H-mode hydrogen experiments have been conducted at DIII-D and are compared to similar deuterium plasmas under a range of divertor conditions, revealing significant effects of the isotope mass on divertor and pedestal conditions. H-mode confinement is found to be systematically lower in hydrogen and experiences a worse degradation with increased fueling. This coincides with a higher ne,sep in hydrogen for similar fueling rates. When ne,ped is matched in hydrogen and deuterium as are the ne and Te pedestal structures, the target conditions deviate strongly from each other. An analysis of two major factors in the pedestal structure, pedestal stability and neutral fueling, shows they are not sufficient to explain either the pedestal differences between isotopes or the hydrogen pedestal structure respectively. An analysis of hydrogen and deuterium density ramps demonstrates a 20% higher ion current and a 30% higher upstream density at detachment onset in hydrogen. The characteristics of target heat flux and divertor radiation are shown to change significantly with the isotope mass in each divertor operational regime. The results shown here indicate divertor conditions trend with ion mass in a manner beneficial for divertor performance in future devices.

Experimental investigation of longitudinal scraping of H- bunches via photo-detachment

Longitudinal emittance growth is a significant challenge in RF linacs, especially for poorly bunched beams. This stems from particles occupying outer synchrotron oscillation orbits in the LBET, causing unwanted bunch-bunch interactions and degraded beam quality. To address this, we proposed using temporally spaced laser pulses to selectively photo-detach electrons from the longitudinal head and tail regions of H- ion bunches. This approach aims to reduce particle density in extreme orbits, enhancing beam uniformity and limiting emittance growth. Our experiments employed Fermilab's 'LaserNotcher' system at the font end of the linac, delivering 1.6 MW peak power with sub-nanosecond precision. By neutralizing the first and last half-nanosecond of several H- bunches, we measured their propagation injection into the booster. Measurements of pulse width, average height, and temporal spacing over booster cycles were compared between the scraped and unscraped bunches. Statistical analysis evaluated the results’ significance, highlighting the feasibility of laser-based scraping for future linac designs to achieve higher beam energies with improved emittance control.

Detachable caster adapter

Detachable caster adapter moves heavy welding tables when fork lift trucks are not practical. A support saddle on the adapter, connected to the caster platform by means of a hinge, fits the leg of the welding table, but can be modified to fit other leg configurations.

Fluorine negative ion detachment kinetics

A study of the rate of F(-) detachment by O and H atoms via the reactions F(-) + O yields FO + e and F(-) + H yields FH+ e was undertaken using a drift tube to produce F(-) ions at various drift velocities and therefore different ion temperatures. Preliminary mobility measurements of F(-) ions in Ar were made, indicating that ion temperatures in the 300 K to 5000 K range could be achieved; however due to numerous difficulties experienced in obtaining a reliable F(-) ion source, the study could not be completed.

Electron detachment of H- by e- collision.

An impact parameter method using Coulomb trajectories is applied to the calculation of cross sections for two electron detachment processes. The asymptotic behavior of the cross sections at high energies is investigated in detail. Energy distributions of ejected electrons at three different incident energies are also calculated. Some of the results obtained are compared with available experimental data.

Electron detachment in low-energy collisions of H/-/ and D/-/ with He

The applicability of the complex-potential theory to H(-)-He collisions is investigated. Measurements are conducted of the elastic differential cross section for H(-)-He collisions, taking into account energies in the range from 5 to 120 eV. A preliminary determination is made of the energy spectrum of detached electrons. The results are interpreted in terms of the complex-potential theory. The crossing point is determined together with the general shape of the HeH(-) potential curve.

The ratio of specific heats for postshock plasmas of a detached bow shock - An MHD model

The empirical relationship between the standoff distance of a detached bow shock (generated by the flow of a supersonic gas past an impenetrable obstacle), the size of the obstacle, the Mach number of the gas, and the ratio of specific heats has been generalized to include the magnetic field. The value of the ratio of specific heats (gamma-prime) in the postshock plasma has been calculated in terms of the preshock Alfvenic and sonic Mach numbers and orientation of the magnetic field. The empirical relationship is further generalized by taking into consideration the normal momentum and energy flux due to waves and/or turbulence and/or heat flow in association with high Mach number shocks. The computed value of gamma prime is substantially modified in comparison with that given by the MHD or the gas dynamic model. For this generalized model the computed gamma prime can be considered to be a more precise thermodynamic quantity, since the macroscopic parameters of the plasma have been separated out. Application of this empirical relationship to the earth's bow shock has been given.

Electron detachment from negative ions - The effects of isotopic substitution

Absolute total electron-detachment cross sections and relative elastic-scattering cross sections are presented for collisions of H(-) or D(-) with He, Ne, Ar, and N2 for collision energies ranging from about 2 eV up to 100 eV. Special emphasis has been given to the effect of isotopic substitution. It was found that, with the exception of the helium target, the results cannot be in accord with a model using a localized complex potential. On the other hand, the results for H(-) or D(-) with He are in excellent agreement with predictions based on previous (local complex potential) analysis of differential elastic-scattering measurements.
