This paper establishes a relationship between the polishing process parameters and the generation of mid spatial-frequency error. The consideration of the polishing lap design to optimize the process in order to keep residual errors to a minimum and optimization of the process (speeds, stroke, etc.) and to keep the residual mid spatial-frequency error to a minimum, is also presented.
The new launch system is an evolutionary launch capability to meet the future national space launch need with significant improvements in operability and corresponding reduction in per flight costs. This improved capability is being achieved by: (1) providing the design, facilities, and infrastructure for cost effective operations; (2) developing a low cost, robust liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen engine; and (3) using the capability and infrastructure of current tankage and shroud elements to derive a operationally efficient and highly reliable vehicle. The design and operational features of the propulsion system are key considerations in achieving the required reliability, operability and dependability. These design considerations will enable cost effective transportation to low earth orbit for a family of vehicles from 20 K to over 100 K lbs payload class.
Performance requirements and costs for transportation, fabrication, and orbital assembly are the drivers in the design of large space antennas will range in size from approximately 30 m to 1 km in diameter and include radiometers, multibeam lens antennas, and microwave power transmission systems. Research and development is required to define comprehensive structural criteria for specific missions, to determine optimized geometries for truss elements and truss configurations and to establish requirements for joint design with consideration of tolerances, load transfer, thermal compatibility, and assembly and disassembly. Candidate structural elements, materials systems for the low pressure rapid cure of advanced composite materials, and various on orbit assembly and fabrication techniques must also be developed.
The environmental and design constraints are reviewed along with some insight into the established design and quality assurance practices that apply to low earth orbit (LEO) space flight hardware. It is intended as an introduction for people unfamiliar with space flight considerations. Some basic data and a bibliography are included.

The digital design of an adaptive digital filter to be employed in the processing of microwave remote sensor data was developed. In particular, a complex demodulation approach was developed to provide narrow band power estimation for a proposed Doppler scatterometer system. This scatterometer was considered for application in the proposed National Oceanographic survey satellite, on an improvement of SEASAT features. The design criteria for a compact magnetograph that can monitor solar magnetic fields from a free-flying satellite for 5 to 10 years are reviewed. The signal-to-noise ratio that can be obtained with a 10-cm f/10 refractor operated with a Fabry-Perot filter and a solid-state detector array is derived. The telescope measures the longitudinal component of the magnetic field for the entire solar disk in a few minutes at a 20-G threshold and at 3-arcsec resolution. The Fabry-Perot filter has a lithium niobate etalon, which can be tuned electrically and operated at a fixed tilt angle in such a manner that it cancels the solar rotational Doppler shifts in the transmitted spectrum. Principles of operation of various types of polarization modulators are presented, and it is concluded that photoelastic modulators and liquid-crystal devices hold the most promise for use in a satellite-borne magnetograph,
System design and verification of an airborne imaging radar (AIR) system are discussed. Issues of importance to multipolarization systems (e.g., mutual coherence and amplitude balance between channels) are emphasized. Methods of detecting and correcting channel imbalances are discussed, and AIR test results are presented.
The design goal is to develop a 118-157 MHz, vertically polarized, low-profile (or conformal) antenna as a replacement for VHF AM blade antennas on aircraft. This design is to be arrived at by scaling the dimensions of an antenna designed for a center frequency of 1.1 GHz. The design prior to scaling may have the following maximum dimensions: diameter less than 3.70 in. and thickness less than 0.50 in. Although a four-arm spiral design was originally suggested, a two-arm spiral may also be used, as both mode-1 and mode-2 (sum and difference) radiation patterns aren't required. While a four-arm spiral can easily be designed should both sum and difference patterns be required, the two-arm design will provide the required sum pattern and simplify the design problem somewhat: only one feed is required, and the feed area geometry is more straightforward. Polarization requirements dictate that a slot spiral be used, as opposed to a wire spiral. Two similar radiating structures were considered. The first is the standard archimedean spiral antenna. The second is a hollow archimedean spiral antenna, essentially a standard archimedean spiral with the inner portion removed.
Design of a terminal area arrival scheduler depends on the interrelationship between throughput, delay and controller intervention. The main contribution of this paper is an analysis of the above interdependence for several stochastic behaviors of expected system performance distributions in the aircraft s time of arrival at the meter fix and runway. Results of this analysis serve to guide the scheduler design choices for key control variables. Two types of variables are analyzed, separation buffers and terminal delay margins. The choice for these decision variables was tested using sensitivity analysis. Analysis suggests that it is best to set the separation buffer at the meter fix to its minimum and adjust the runway buffer to attain the desired system performance. Delay margin was found to have the least effect. These results help characterize the variables most influential in the scheduling operations of terminal area arrivals.
Following a review of the major LST program elements, LST/Space Shuttle interface characteristics and Shuttle performance capabilities are reviewed. The influence these considerations have on the LST configuration, design, and on-orbit servicing is discussed. Significant systems trade studies and design constraints associated with the Shuttle/LST interface are discussed, including telescope focal ratio limitations and on-orbit access provisions for maintenance. LST internal interfaces are described with particular emphasis on simplicity and minimization of integration costs. Characteristics and design requirements of the OTA, SI, and SSM also are discussed with emphasis on critical subsystem requirements.
An overview of the general design of space vehicles serviced in orbit is presented. The basic space vehicle systems, subsystems, modules components, and associated appendages comprise the elements to be considered. Primary emphasis is given to the multi-disciplinary considerations in the development of requirements, and in particular, design of the space vehicle to facilitate orbital sevice by the extra-vehicular crew person(s).
