Image segmentation by iterative parallel region growing with application to data compression and image analysis

Image segmentation can be a key step in data compression and image analysis. However, the segmentation results produced by most previous approaches to region growing are suspect because they depend on the order in which portions of the image are processed. An iterative parallel segmentation algorithm avoids this problem by performing globally best merges first. Such a segmentation approach, and two implementations of the approach on NASA's Massively Parallel Processor (MPP) are described. Application of the segmentation approach to data compression and image analysis is then described, and results of such application are given for a LANDSAT Thematic Mapper image.

GPU Lossless Hyperspectral Data Compression System

Hyperspectral imaging systems onboard aircraft or spacecraft can acquire large amounts of data, putting a strain on limited downlink and storage resources. Onboard data compression can mitigate this problem but may require a system capable of a high throughput. In order to achieve a high throughput with a software compressor, a graphics processing unit (GPU) implementation of a compressor was developed targeting the current state-of-the-art GPUs from NVIDIA(R). The implementation is based on the fast lossless (FL) compression algorithm reported in "Fast Lossless Compression of Multispectral-Image Data" (NPO- 42517), NASA Tech Briefs, Vol. 30, No. 8 (August 2006), page 26, which operates on hyperspectral data and achieves excellent compression performance while having low complexity. The FL compressor uses an adaptive filtering method and achieves state-of-the-art performance in both compression effectiveness and low complexity. The new Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS) Standard for Lossless Multispectral & Hyperspectral image compression (CCSDS 123) is based on the FL compressor. The software makes use of the highly-parallel processing capability of GPUs to achieve a throughput at least six times higher than that of a software implementation running on a single-core CPU. This implementation provides a practical real-time solution for compression of data from airborne hyperspectral instruments.

The development of lossless data compression technology for remote sensing applications

Lossless data compression has been studied for many NASA missions to achieve the benefit of increased science return, reduced onboard memory requirement, station contact time and communication bandwidth. This paper first addresses the requirement for onboard applications and provides rational for the selection of the Rice algorithm among other available techniques. A top-level description of the Rice algorithm will be given, along with some new capabilities already implemented in both software and hardware VLSI forms. The paper then addresses systems issues important for onboard implementation including sensor calibration, error propagation and data packetization. The latter part of the paper provides several case study examples drawn from a broad spectrum of science instruments including the thematic mapper, x-ray telescope, gamma-ray spectrometer, and acousto-optical spectrometer.

Data compression properties of the Hartley transform

The data compression performance of the Hartley transform on a Markov-1 signal is theoretically compared to that of the Fourier transform. Covariance distribution and residue correlation measurements have been computed for the Hartley, Fourier, and cosine transforms. The Hartley transform achieves better coding performance than the Fourier transform, but is inferior to the cosine transform.

Joint Classification and Data Compression of multidimensional information sources - Application to ERTS

This paper describes a concept of Joint Classification and Data Compression of multidimensional information sources in the context of applications to Earth Resources Technology Satellites. The concept is used to define an Information Extraction System intended to remove data redundancy early in the sensor to user link in both classification and film interpretation applications. The approach uses cascaded partially supervised clustering to extract spectral intensity features from spatially local sources. Data compression is then used to efficiently represent spatial features within the spectral intensity feature map.

A VLSI Processor Design of Real-Time Data Compression for High-Resolution Imaging Radar

For the high-resolution imaging radar systems, real-time data compression of raw imaging data is required to accomplish the science requirements and satisfy the given communication and storage constraints. The Block Adaptive Quantizer (BAQ) algorithm and its associated VLSI processor design have been developed to provide a real-time data compressor for high-resolution imaging radar systems.

Data compression by a decreasing slope-threshold test

Resolution can be obtained at large compression ratios with method for selecting data points for transmission by telemetry in television compressed-data system. Test slope of raw data stream and compare it to symmetric pair of decreasing thresholds. When either threshold is exceeded, data are sampled and transmitted; thresholds are reset, and test begins again.

Considerations on data compression of synthetic aperture radar images

This paper describes some analytical results relative to the effectiveness of applying data compression techniques for efficient transmission of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) signals and images. A Rayleigh target model is assumed in the analysis. It is also assumed that all surface reflectivity information is of interest and needs to be transmitted. Spectral characteristics of radar echo signals and processed images are analyzed. Analytical results generally indicate that due to the lack of high spatial correlation in the Rayleigh distributed radar surface reflectivity, application of data compression to SAR signals and images under the square difference fidelity criterion may be less effective than its application to images obtained using incoherent illumination. On the other hand, if certain random variations in radar images are considered as undesirable, substantial compression ratio may be achieved by removing such variations.

Data compression preserving statistical independence

The purpose of this study was to determine the optimum points of evaluation of data compressed by means of polynomial smoothing. It is shown that a set y of m statistically independent observations Y(t sub 1), Y(t sub 2), ... Y(t sub m) of a quantity X(t), which can be described by a (n-1)th degree polynomial in time, may be represented by a set Z of n statistically independent compressed observations Z (tau sub 1), Z (tau sub 2),...Z (tau sub n), such that The compressed set Z has the same information content as the observed set Y. the times tau sub 1, tau sub 2,.. tau sub n are the zeros of an nth degree polynomial P sub n, to whose definition and properties the bulk of this report is devoted. The polynomials P sub n are defined as functions of the observation times t sub 1, t sub 2,.. t sub n, and it is interesting to note that if the observation times are continuously distributed the polynomials P sub n degenerate to legendre polynomials. The proposed data compression scheme is a little more complex than those usually employed, but has the advantage of preserving all the information content of the original observations.

Data Compression Techniques for Advanced Space Transportation Systems

Advanced space transportation systems, including vehicle state of health systems, will produce large amounts of data which must be stored on board the vehicle and or transmitted to the ground and stored. The cost of storage or transmission of the data could be reduced if the number of bits required to represent the data is reduced by the use of data compression techniques. Most of the work done in this study was rather generic and could apply to many data compression systems, but the first application area to be considered was launch vehicle state of health telemetry systems. Both lossless and lossy compression techniques were considered in this study.

Fast and Adaptive Lossless Onboard Hyperspectral Data Compression System

Modern hyperspectral imaging systems are able to acquire far more data than can be downlinked from a spacecraft. Onboard data compression helps to alleviate this problem, but requires a system capable of power efficiency and high throughput. Software solutions have limited throughput performance and are power-hungry. Dedicated hardware solutions can provide both high throughput and power efficiency, while taking the load off of the main processor. Thus a hardware compression system was developed. The implementation uses a field-programmable gate array (FPGA). The implementation is based on the fast lossless (FL) compression algorithm reported in Fast Lossless Compression of Multispectral-Image Data (NPO-42517), NASA Tech Briefs, Vol. 30, No. 8 (August 2006), page 26, which achieves excellent compression performance and has low complexity. This algorithm performs predictive compression using an adaptive filtering method, and uses adaptive Golomb coding. The implementation also packetizes the coded data. The FL algorithm is well suited for implementation in hardware. In the FPGA implementation, one sample is compressed every clock cycle, which makes for a fast and practical realtime solution for space applications. Benefits of this implementation are: 1) The underlying algorithm achieves a combination of low complexity and compression effectiveness that exceeds that of techniques currently in use. 2) The algorithm requires no training data or other specific information about the nature of the spectral bands for a fixed instrument dynamic range. 3) Hardware acceleration provides a throughput improvement of 10 to 100 times vs. the software implementation. A prototype of the compressor is available in software, but it runs at a speed that does not meet spacecraft requirements. The hardware implementation targets the Xilinx Virtex IV FPGAs, and makes the use of this compressor practical for Earth satellites as well as beyond-Earth missions with hyperspectral instruments.

A data compression technique for synthetic aperture radar images

A data compression technique is developed for synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery. The technique is based on an SAR image model and is designed to preserve the local statistics in the image by an adaptive variable rate modification of block truncation coding (BTC). A data rate of approximately 1.6 bit/pixel is achieved with the technique while maintaining the image quality and cultural (pointlike) targets. The algorithm requires no large data storage and is computationally simple.
