Interactive robot control system and method of use

A robotic system includes a robot having joints, actuators, and sensors, and a distributed controller. The controller includes command-level controller, embedded joint-level controllers each controlling a respective joint, and a joint coordination-level controller coordinating motion of the joints. A central data library (CDL) centralizes all control and feedback data, and a user interface displays a status of each joint, actuator, and sensor using the CDL. A parameterized action sequence has a hierarchy of linked events, and allows the control data to be modified in real time. A method of controlling the robot includes transmitting control data through the various levels of the controller, routing all control and feedback data to the CDL, and displaying status and operation of the robot using the CDL. The parameterized action sequences are generated for execution by the robot, and a hierarchy of linked events is created within the sequence.

Telerobotic control of a mobile coordinated robotic server

The annual report on telerobotic control of a mobile coordinated robotic server is presented. The goal of this effort is to develop advanced control methods for flexible space manipulator systems. As such, an adaptive fuzzy logic controller was developed in which model structure as well as parameter constraints are not required for compensation. The work builds upon previous work on fuzzy logic controllers. Fuzzy logic controllers have been growing in importance in the field of automatic feedback control. Hardware controllers using fuzzy logic have become available as an alternative to the traditional PID controllers. Software has also been introduced to aid in the development of fuzzy logic rule-bases. The advantages of using fuzzy logic controllers include the ability to merge the experience and intuition of expert operators into the rule-base and that a model of the system is not required to construct the controller. A drawback of the classical fuzzy logic controller, however, is the many parameters needed to be turned off-line prior to application in the closed-loop. In this report, an adaptive fuzzy logic controller is developed requiring no system model or model structure. The rule-base is defined to approximate a state-feedback controller while a second fuzzy logic algorithm varies, on-line, parameters of the defining controller. Results indicate the approach is viable for on-line adaptive control of systems when the model is too complex or uncertain for application of other more classical control techniques.

Modelling and control of two coordinated robot arms

Two coordinated robot arms are modeled by considering the two arms as working on the same object simultaneously and as a closed kinematic chain. In both formulations, a novel dynamic control method is used which is based on feedback linearization and simultaneous output decoupling.

Formation Flying Control of Multiple Spacecraft

The problem of coordination and control of multiple spacecraft (MS) moving in formation is considered. Here, each MS is modeled by a rigid body with fixed center of mass. First, various schemes for generating the desired formation patterns are discussed, Then, explicit control laws for formation-keeping and relative attitude alignment based on nearest neighbor-tracking are derived. The necessary data which must be communicated between the MS to achieve effective control are examined. The time-domain behavior of the feedback-controlled MS formation for typical low-Earth orbits is studied both analytically and via computer simulation. The paper concludes with a discussion of the implementation of the derived control laws, and the integration of the MS formation coordination and control system with a proposed inter-spacecraft communication/computing network.

Coordinate generation with precise controls over mesh properties

Powerful local controls have been developed for mesh generation with the class of multisurface coordinate transformations. The controls come from local piecewise linear interpolants, and the resulting coordinates have continuous first derivatives. At the boundaries, the mesh controls provide the capability of joining distinct coordinate systems together with continuous derivatives. Away from boundaries, a local region can be given a particular mesh form to model internal objects or to simplify a problem. Applications of the controls are illustrated with a sequence of two-dimensional examples. For simplicity, each is generated about a NACA0012 airfoil which is of unit length and with leading edge pointed in a negative x-direction.

Telerobotic research for in-space structural assembly and servicing

The paper reviews Langley's Telerobotic Technology Program and the recent and planned research in automated space assembly. Research areas include multiple manipulator coordination and control, automatic modes, evaluation of control modalities for teleoperated tasks, active sensing for world modeling and control, and architectures for distributed telerobotic systems. Studies of master/slave teleoperators performing representative space tasks showed that current teleoperator systems can be used to accomplish remote space operations. These studies also identified that research is required to improve the systems to reduce operator workload and task completion time. Closed-loop noncontact and contact sensor based control for automatic acquisition, positioning, and active compliance have been developed. A control structure for multiple manipulator coordination and control with manual, shared, and automatic modes performing space type tasks is being evaluated.

Adaptive Force And Position Control For Robots

Control system causes end effector of robot manipulator to follow prescribed trajectory and applies desired force or torque to object manipulating or in contact. Characterized by hybrid control architecture, where positions and orientations along unconstrained coordinate axes controlled by position-control subsystem, while forces and torques along constrained coordinate axes controlled by force-control subsystem. Compensates for dynamic cross-coupling between force-and position-control loops and does not require knowledge of complicated model of dynamics of manipulator and environment.

On the Minimum Induced Drag of Wings

Birds do not require the use of vertical tails. They do not appear to have any mechanism by which to control their yaw. As an example the albatross is notable in this regard. The authors believe this is possible because of a unique adaptation by which there exists a triple-optimal solution that provides the maximum aerodynamic efficiency, the minimum structural weight, and it provides for coordination of control in roll and yaw. Until now, this solution has eluded researchers, and remained unknown. Here it is shown that the correct specification of spanload provides for all three solutions at once, maximum aerodynamic efficiency, minimum structural weight, and coordinated control. The implications of this result has far reaching effects on the design of aircraft, as well as dramatic efficiency improvement.

Dynamic coordination of two robot arms

This paper presents a new control method for coordinated control of two robot arms. The two arms are assumed to work on the same object simultaneously. The control method uses a dynamic coordinator acting on relative position and velocity task space errors and on relative force-torque errors between the two arms as sensed at the end effectors. This method is novel because the position and velocity error feedback could be superimposed with the force-torque error feedback in the task space simultaneously.

Integrated lift/drag controller for aircraft

A system for altering the lift/drag characteristics of powered aircraft to provide a safe means of glide path control includes a control device integrated for coordination action with the aircraft throttle. Such lift/drag alteration devices as spoilers, dive brakes, and the like are actuated by manual operation of a single lever coupled with the throttle for integrating, blending or coordinating power control. Improper operation of the controller is inhibited by safety mechanisms.

Numerical solution of flow problems using body-fitted coordinate systems

The paper deals with numerically generated boundary-fitted coordinate systems. This procedure eliminates the shape of the boundaries as a complicating factor and allows the flow about arbitrary boundaries to be treated essentially as easily as that about simple boundaries. The technique of boundary-fitted coordinate systems is based on a method of automatic numerical generation of a general curvilinear coordinate system having a coordinate line coincident with each boundary of a general multiconnected region involving any number of arbitrarily shaped boundaries. Once the curvilinear coordinate system is generated, any partial differential system of interest may be solved on the coordinate system by transforming the equations and solving the resulting system in finite-difference approximation on the rectangular transformed plane. Attention is given to the types of boundary-fitted coordinate systems, coordinate system control, operation of the coordinate codes, solution of partial differential equations, application to free-surface flow, and other applications of interest.

Solar Dynamic Power System Stability Analysis and Control

The objective of this research is to conduct dynamic analysis, control design, and control performance test of solar power system. Solar power system consists of generation system and distribution network system. A bench mark system is used in this research, which includes a generator with excitation system and governor, an ac/dc converter, six DDCU's and forty-eight loads. A detailed model is used for modeling generator. Excitation system is represented by a third order model. DDCU is represented by a seventh order system. The load is modeled by the combination of constant power and constant impedance. Eigen-analysis and eigen-sensitivity analysis are used for system dynamic analysis. The effects of excitation system, governor, ac/dc converter control, and the type of load on system stability are discussed. In order to improve system transient stability, nonlinear ac/dc converter control is introduced. The direct linearization method is used for control design. The dynamic analysis results show that these controls affect system stability in different ways. The parameter coordination of controllers are recommended based on the dynamic analysis. It is concluded from the present studies that system stability is improved by the coordination of control parameters and the nonlinear ac/dc converter control stabilize system oscillation caused by the load change and system fault efficiently.
