Nature of charge density wave in kagome metal ScV6Sn6

Abstract Recently, kagome lattice materials have emerged as a new model material platform for discovering and engineering novel quantum phases of matter. In this work, we elucidate the driving mechanism of the $$\sqrt{{{3}}}$$ 3 × $$\sqrt{{{3}}}$$ 3 charge order in a newly discovered kagome metal ScV 6 Sn 6 . Through multimodal investigations combining angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, phonon dispersion calculations, and phase diagram study, we identify the central role of unstable planar Sn and Sc phonon modes, while the electronic instability and van Hove singularities originating from the V kagome lattice have a marginal influence. Our results highlight that the $$\sqrt{{{3}}}$$ 3 × $$\sqrt{{{3}}}$$ 3 charge order in ScV 6 Sn 6 is fundamentally distinguished from the electronically driven 2 × 2 charge order in the canonical kagome system AV 3 Sb 5 , uncovering a new mechanism to induce symmetry-breaking phase transition in kagome lattice materials.

Site-specific spectroscopic measurement of spin and charge in (LuFeO3)m/(LuFe2O4)1 multiferroic superlattices

Abstract Interface materials offer a means to achieve electrical control of ferrimagnetism at room temperature as was recently demonstrated in (LuFeO 3 ) m /(LuFe 2 O 4 ) 1 superlattices. A challenge to understanding the inner workings of these complex magnetoelectric multiferroics is the multitude of distinct Fe centres and their associated environments. This is because macroscopic techniques characterize average responses rather than the role of individual iron centres. Here, we combine optical absorption, magnetic circular dichroism and first-principles calculations to uncover the origin of high-temperature magnetism in these superlattices and the charge-ordering pattern in the m = 3 member. In a significant conceptual advance, interface spectra establish how Lu-layer distortion selectively enhances the Fe 2+ → Fe 3+ charge-transfer contribution in the spin-up channel, strengthens the exchange interactions and increases the Curie temperature. Comparison of predicted and measured spectra also identifies a non-polar charge ordering arrangement in the LuFe 2 O 4 layer. This site-specific spectroscopic approach opens the door to understanding engineered materials with multiple metal centres and strong entanglement.

Universal orbital and magnetic structures in infinite-layer nickelates

We conducted a comparative study of the rare-earth infinite-layer nickelate films, RNiO 2 (R = La, Pr, and Nd), using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). We found that the gross features of the orbital configurations are essentially the same, with minor variations in the detailed hybridization. For low-energy excitations, we unambiguously confirm the presence of damped magnetic excitations in all three compounds. By fitting to a linear spin-wave theory, comparable spin exchange coupling strengths and damping coefficients are extracted, indicating a universal magnetic structure in the infinite-layer nickelates. Interestingly, while signatures of a charge order are observed in LaNiO 2 in the quasielastic region of the RIXS spectrum, it is absent in NdNiO 2 and PrNiO 2 . Furthermore, this prompts further investigation into the universality and the origins of charge order within the infinite-layer nickelates.

Ferromagnetism out of charge fluctuation of strongly correlated electrons in κ -(BEDT-TTF) 2 Hg(SCN) 2 Br

We perform magnetic susceptibility and magnetic torque measurements on the organic κ-(BEDT-TTF) 2 Hg(SCN) 2 Br, which is recently suggested to host an exotic quantum dipole-liquid in its low-temperature insulating phase. Below the metal-insulator (MI) transition temperature, the magnetic susceptibility follows a Curie–Weiss law with a positive Curie–Weiss temperature, and a particular M∝ $\sqrt{H}$ curve is observed. The emergent ferromagnetically interacting spins amount to about 1/6 of the full spin moment of localized charges. Taking account of the possible inhomogeneous quasi-charge-order that forms a dipole-liquid, we construct a model of antiferromagnetically interacting spin chains in two adjacent charge-ordered domains, which are coupled via fluctuating charges on a Mott-dimer at the boundary. We find that the charge fluctuations can draw a weak ferromagnetic moment out of the spin singlet domains.

Manipulating topological properties in Bi 2 Se 3 / BiSe /transition metal dichalcogenide heterostructures with interface charge transfer

Heterostructures of topological insulator Bi 2 Se 3 on transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) offer a new materials platform for studying novel quantum states by exploiting the interplay among topological orders, charge orders and magnetic orders. Here, the diverse interface attributes, such as material combination, charge re-arrangement, defect and strain, can be utilized to manipulate the quantum properties of this class of materials. Recent experiments of Bi 2 Se 3 /NbSe 2 heterostructures show signatures of strong Rashba band splitting due to the presence of a BiSe buffer layer, but the atomic level mechanism is not fully understood. We conduct first-principles studies of the Bi 2 Se3/BiSe/TMDC heterostructures with five different TMDC substrates (1T phase VSe 2 , MoSe 2 , TiSe 2 , and 2H phase NbSe 2 , MoSe 2 ). We find significant charge transfer at both BiSe/TMDC and Bi 2 Se 3 /BiSe interfaces driven by the work function difference, which stabilizes the BiSe layer as an electron donor and creates interface dipole. The electric field of the interface dipole breaks the inversion symmetry in the Bi 2 Se 3 layer, leading to the giant Rashba band splitting in two quintuple layers and the recovery of the Dirac point in three quintuple layers, with the latter otherwise only occurring in thicker samples with at least six Bi 2 Se 3 quintuple layers. Besides, we find that strain can significantly affect the charge transfer at the interfaces. Our study presents a promising avenue for tuning topological properties in heterostructures of two-dimensional materials, with potential applications in quantum devices.

Attractive Su-Schrieffer-Heeger-Hubbard model on a square lattice away from half-filling

The Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model, with bond phonons modulating electron tunneling, is a paradigmatic electron-phonon model that hosts an antiferromagnetic order to bond order transition at half-filling. In the presence of a repulsive Hubbard interaction, the antiferromagnetic phase is enhanced, but the phase transition remains first order. Here, we explore the physics of the SSH model with an attractive Hubbard interaction, which hosts an interesting interplay among charge order, s-wave pairing, and bond order. Using the numerically exact determinant quantum Monte Carlo method, we show that both charge order, present at weak electron-phonon coupling, and bond order, at large coupling, give way to s-wave pairing when the system is doped. Lastly, we demonstrate that the SSH electron-phonon interaction competes with the attractive Hubbard interaction and reduces the s-wave pairing correlation.

Nondegenerate surface pair density wave in the kagome superconductor CsV 3 Sb 5 : Application to vestigial orders

On the Sb layer of the kagome superconductor CsV 3 ⁢Sb 5 , pair density wave states have been observed. When the high-temperature charge orderings are treated as static backgrounds, these pair density wave (PDW) states exhibit the same wave vector in the effective two-dimensional Brillouin zone. Interestingly, these PDW states break the same symmetry on the surface. Considering the presence of this nondegenerate PDW, we investigate the implications for the possible existence of a vestigial charge-4⁢ e phase with a nonzero center-of-mass momentum. To distinguish between different vestigial phases, we propose scanning tunneling microscopy experiments. Here we aim to provide insights into the nature of the vestigial phases and their distinct characteristics in CsV 3 ⁢Sb 5 . This research sheds light on the interplay between PDW states, charge orderings, and superconductivity of the kagome superconductor.

Non-Covalent Interactions and Helical Packing in Thiophene-Phenylene Copolymers: Tuning Solid-State Ordering and Charge Transport for Organic Field-Effect Transistors

In this study, we introduce two thiophene-phenylene-thiophene (TPT) polymers designed to leverage noncovalent intramolecular interactions to regulate main-chain conformation and enhance solid-state ordering. By incorporating unsubstituted thiophene (T) or bithiophene (2T) units, we reveal striking divergence in the thermal, morphological, and optoelectronic properties of the resulting films, facilitated by these noncovalent interactions. Using a combination of computational and experimental approaches, we show that annealing yields remarkably different polymer conformations and, consequently, charge transport properties. TPT-T undergoes a significant structural transformation, adopting a more planar backbone conformation and a highly crystalline, edge-on molecular orientation. In contrast, the introduction of a single additional thiophene unit in TPT-2T leads to a more isotropic molecular orientation with a slight preference for face-on alignment, resulting in a heterogeneous film structure that hinders charge transport despite achieving tighter molecular packing. Remarkably, despite being composed of achiral components, TPT-2T develops chirality upon annealing, indicating the formation of a helical conformation. Organic field-effect transistor measurements reveal that the well-ordered alignment in annealed TPT-T films results in higher charge carrier mobility and a narrower distribution of mobility values than in TPT-2T. These findings provide critical insights into the structure−property relationships of conjugated polymers, offering guidance for optimizing molecular design and processing strategies for highperformance organic electronic materials.

Compositional phase stability of correlated electron materials within DFT+DMFT

Predicting the compositional phase stability of strongly correlated electron materials is an outstanding challenge in condensed matter physics, requiring precise computations of total energies. In this work, we employ the density functional theory plus dynamical mean-field theory (DFT+DMFT) formalism to address local correlations due to transition metal $\textit{d}$ electrons on compositional phase stability in the prototype rechargeable battery cathode material Li x CoO 2 , and detailed comparisons are made with the simpler DFT+$\textit{U}$ approach (i.e., the Hartree-Fock solution of the DMFT impurity problem). Local interactions are found to strongly impact the energetics of the band insulator LiCoO 2 , most significantly via the $E_g$ orbitals, which are partially occupied via hybridization with $\textit{O p}$ states. We find CoO 2 and Li 1/2 CoO 2 to be moderately correlated Fermi liquids with quasiparticle weights of 0.6–0.8 for the $T_{2g}$ states, which are most impacted by the interactions. Further, as compared to DFT+$\textit{U}$, DFT+DMFT considerably dampens the increase in total energy as $\textit{U}$ is increased, which indicates that dynamical correlations are important to describe this class of materials despite the relatively modest quasiparticle weights. Unlike DFT+$\textit{U}$, which can incorrectly drive Li x CoO 2 toward spurious phase separating or charge-ordered states, DFT+DMFT correctly captures the system's phase stability and does not exhibit a strong charge-ordering tendency. Most importantly, the error within DFT+$\textit{U}$ varies strongly as the composition changes, challenging the common practice of artificially tuning $\textit{U}$ within DFT+$\textit{U}$ to compensate the errors of Hartree-Fock. DFT+DMFT predicts the average intercalation voltage decreases relative to DFT, opposite to the result of DFT+$\textit{U}$, which would yield favorable agreement with experiment in conjunction with the overprediction of the voltage by the strongly constrained and appropriately normed DFT functional.

Thermally superactive artificial kagome spin ice structures obtained with the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction

Artificial kagome spin ice exhibits exotic magnetic correlations driven by a combination of geometric frustration and dipolar interactions that, at low-enough temperature, can result in ordered phases. This order, whether it is the ground state of several kagome rings, or the theoretically predicted long-range order of an extended array, has yet to be experimentally observed. By introducing an interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, we are able to reduce the blocking temperature of the individual nanomagnets, allowing a system of 30 kagome nanomagnets to explore its vast manifold of microstates and find its ground state. Furthermore, the extracted magnetic correlations in an extended artificial kagome spin ice are found to exhibit quantitative signatures of long-range charge order, providing evidence of the theoretically predicted continuous phase transition to the charge-ordered state. The significant lowering of the blocking temperature in nanomagnets is important for the exploitation of superparamagnetism in artificial spin systems and devices.

Dynamical cluster approximation study of electron localization in the extended Hubbard model

We perform a detailed study of the phase transitions and mechanisms of electron localization in the extended Hubbard model using the dynamical cluster approximation on a 2×2 cluster. We explore the interplay of charge order and Mott physics. We find that a nearest-neighbor Coulomb interaction V causes “screening” effects close to the Mott phase transition, pushing the phase boundary to larger values of U. We also demonstrate the different effects of V on correlations in metallic and insulating regimes, and document the different correlation aspects of charge order and Mott states.

Uniaxial stress study of spin and charge stripes in La1.875Ba0.125CuO4 by 139La NMR and 63Cu NQR

We study the response of spin and charge order in single crystals of La1.875Ba0.125CuO4 to uniaxial stress, through 139La nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and 63Cu nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR), respectively. In unstressed La1.875Ba0.125CuO4, the low-temperature tetragonal structure onsets below TLTT = 57 K, while the charge order and the spin order transition temperatures are TCO = 54 K and TSO = 37 K, respectively. We find that uniaxial stress along the [110] lattice direction strongly suppresses TCO and TSO, but has little effect on TLTT. In other words, under stress along [110] a large splitting (≈ 21 K) opens between TCO and TLTT, showing that these transitions are not tightly linked. On the other hand, stress along [100] causes a slight suppression of TLTT but has essentially no effect on TCO and TSO. Magnetic field H along [110] stabilizes the spin order: the suppression of TSO under stress along [110] is slower under H ∥ [110] than H ∥ [001]. We develop a Landau free energy model and interpret our findings as an interplay of symmetry breaking terms driven by the orientation of spins.

A Polar Magnetic and Insulating Double Corundum Oxide: Mn2MnSbO6 with Ordered Mn(II) and Mn(III) Ions

A new magnetic insulator Mn2MnSbO6 with a polar crystal structure and an ordered Mn2+ and Mn3+ arrangement was synthesized under a high pressure of 7.5 GPa and 1300 degrees C. The crystal structure of Mn2MnSbO6, investigated by synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction, was found to be isomorphous with that of Ni3TeO6-type, space group R3. The non-centrosymmetric structure was confirmed by the second-harmonic generation measurements. The X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy measurement confirmed the nominal oxidation states of Mn22+Mn3+SbO6. Magnetic measurements indicate that Mn2MnSbO6 orders antiferromagnetically below 44 K and undergoes a field-induced spin-flop transition at 5 K. First-principles calculations indicate an antiferromagnetic ground state with up/up/up/down/down/down (uuuddd) spin configuration of the six crystallographically unique Mn ions in the c-axis doubled magnetic structure. The density functional theory calculations also substantiate the experimentally observed charge ordering of the Mn2+/Mn3+ ions and the insulating behavior due to a bandgap of 0.52 eV. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first double corundum oxide containing Jahn-Teller active Mn3+ ions.

Charge correlations and magnetoelastic coupling in intercalated transition metal dichalcogenides

The large van der Waals gap in transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) offers an avenue to tune the ground state of 2D materials through the intercalation of magnetic atoms. Here, we investigate the charge correlations in Fe 1/3 ⁢TaS 2 , Co 1/3 ⁢TaS 2 , and Fe 0.35 ⁢NbS 2 by combining angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), x-ray scattering, magnetometry, and density functional theory (DFT). We find that, while short-range charge fluctuations develop in Ta-based compounds, Fe 0.35 ⁢NbS 2 exhibits long-range charge order which is strongly coupled with magnetic order and tunable by external magnetic field. Our electronic structure analysis reveals that intercalation reconstructs the Fermi surface via charge transfer and band renormalization, yet does not generate the nesting conditions compatible with the observed ordering vectors. Complementary phonon calculations further exclude a conventional electron-phonon origin of charge order. Together, these results establish magnetoelastic coupling as the dominant mechanism behind charge ordering in Fe 0.35 ⁢NbS 2 and highlight the contrasting role of Nb and Ta hosts in stabilizing correlated ground states in intercalated TMDs.

Testing for pair density wave order in La 1.875 Ba 0.125 CuO 4

We report charge order is commonly believed to compete with superconducting order. An intertwined form of a superconducting wave function, known as pair density wave (PDW) order, has been proposed; however, direct evidence, theoretical or experimental, that it forms the ground state of any cuprate superconductor is lacking. As a test case, we consider La 2-x Ba x CuO 4 with x = 1/8, where charge and spin stripe orders within the CuO 2 planes compete with three-dimensional superconducting order. We report measurements of the superconducting critical current perpendicular to the planes in the presence of an in-plane magnetic field. The variation of the critical current with orientation of the field is inconsistent with a theoretical prediction specific to the PDW model. It appears, instead, that the orientation dependence of the critical-current density might be determined by a minority phase of d-wave superconductivity that is present as a consequence of doped-charge inhomogeneity.

Competition between magnetic order and charge localization in Na 2 IrO 3 thin crystal devices thin crystal devices

Spin orbit assisted Mott insulators such as sodium iridate (Na 2 IrO 3 ) have been an important subject of study in recent years. In these materials, the interplay of electronic correlations, spin-orbit coupling, crystal field effects, and a honeycomb arrangement of ions bring exciting ground states, predicted in the frame of the Kitaev model. The insulating character of Na 2 IrO 3 has hampered its integration to an electronic device, desirable for applications, such as the manipulation of quasiparticles interesting for topological quantum computing. Here we show through electronic transport measurements supported by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments, that electronic transport in Na 2 IrO 3 is ruled by variable range hopping and it is strongly dependent on the magnetic ordering transition known for bulk Na 2 IrO 3 , as well as on external electric fields. Furthermore, electronic transport measurements allow us to deduce a value for the localization length and the density of states in our Na 2 IrO 3 thin crystal devices, and offer an alternative approach to study insulating 2D-materials.

Structural, magneto transport and magnetic properties of Ruddlesden–Popper La 2-2x Sr 1+2x Mn 2 O 7 (0.42≤x≤0.52) layered manganites

The magneto transport of Ruddlesden–Popper, La 2-2x Sr 1+2x Mn 2 O 7 (0.42≤x≤0.52), 2-dimensional bilayered manganites have been investigated in a broad temperature range. The samples have been synthesized using the solid-state reaction method. Rietveld refinement of the X-ray diffraction data indicates the tetragonal structure formation with I4/mmm space group. The resistivity curves of the samples present a general characteristic of metal-insulator (MI) transition at certain temperature (T MI ). Besides, for samples with x = 0.48, 0.50, and 0.52, at a certain temperature (T CO ) well below T MI the charge ordering is also evident. Furthermore, the samples display a shallow upturn in resistivity below T min due to the Kondo like spin scattering effect, weak localization and electron-phonon interaction. The high temperature semiconducting (T>T MI ) region, the resistivity curve follows the 3D Mott’s variable hopping transport mechanism. The overall suppression of resistivity accounts for a substantial magnetoresistance by applying a magnetic field and the characteristic change in T MI , T CO , and T min are discussed. Temperature-dependent magnetization demonstrates the suppression of ferromagnetism and evident of antiferromagnetic nature with an apparent charge ordering with increasing concentration of Sr 2+ .

Superconductivity in pressurized trilayer La 4 Ni 3 O 10-$δ$ single crystals

In this study, the pursuit of discovering new high-temperature superconductors that diverge from the copper-based model has profound implications for explaining mechanisms behind superconductivity and may also enable new applications. Here our investigation shows that the application of pressure effectively suppresses the spin–charge order in trilayer nickelate La 4 Ni 3 O 10-δ single crystals, leading to the emergence of superconductivity with a maximum critical temperature (T c ) of around 30 K at 69.0 GPa. The d.c. susceptibility measurements confirm a substantial diamagnetic response below T c , indicating the presence of bulk superconductivity with a volume fraction exceeding 80%. In the normal state, we observe a strange metal behaviour, characterized by a linear temperature-dependent resistance extending up to 300 K. Furthermore, the layer-dependent superconductivity observed hints at a unique interlayer coupling mechanism specific to nickelates, setting them apart from cuprates in this regard. Our findings provide crucial insights into the fundamental mechanisms underpinning superconductivity, while also introducing a new material platform to explore the intricate interplay between the spin–charge order, flat band structures, interlayer coupling, strange metal behaviour and high-temperature superconductivity.
