Tidal Turbine Test, Downeast Turbines, July 12, 2021

Downeast Turbines tested a tidal turbine prototype with novel rotor/channel system and lateral effluent discharge apparatus (LEDA), during five days of testing in the flume at Alden Lab. Three days of testing (July 12-14, 2021) focused on turbine power metrics of torque and rpm, which were low, and then two days of follow-up testing (July 27-28, 2021) focused on LEDA performance metrics of pressure differential and rates of volumetric flow, with encouraging results. Next step is to to characterize, and even optimize, configurations of the LEDA, using 3D-CFD as a helpful tool, to refine its shape and explore its limits of performance as a means of effluent discharge that augments performance of an instream turbine. An improved configuration of the LEDA will be re-combined with the rotor/channel system of the turbine prototype, and ultimately, the rotor will be re-sized (enlarged), to better match the LEDA's performance capabilities in drawing through a rate of volumetric flow. This submission is Downeast Turbines' Post Access Report for the test event. It includes the files described here (next below), and several reference links. "Downeast TEAMER-Post-Access-Report...docx" is a document file containing the report. "Appendices A, B, and C" are included in this file, and so are "Figures #1-7." "Appendix D - Test Data Workbooks.zip" is an archive file containing all post access data (raw data tables, calculating tables, and graphs), presented in fourteen Excel workbooks as described in the report. "Appendix E - Post Access Figures.zip" is an archive file containing "Figures #8-52," of the report.

Magnetic Gears for a Marine Hydrokinetic Generator Component Model

The goal of this project is to design, fabricate, and test a hermetically sealed 50 kilowatt (kW) multistage magnetically geared generator (MGG). The Component Content Model provides data submitters with an easy and consistent means of uploading data and associated meta data about a component that is currently under development. The data fields include generic information about the component, technology classifications, current costs and performance, proposed target goals, and the environment that the component is operated in. These data are important to DOE and will be used to develop data products that provide quantitative information to guide and support programmatic decisions. Data will also be used by DOE in general assessments of MHK component readiness, performance, costs, and proposed plans. The ultimate goal is to use these data to perform research and tailor programs to best benefit the industry.

Sub-Scale Stage 1 Magnetic Gear for a Marine Hydrokinetic Generator

The goal of this project is to design, fabricate, and test a hermetically sealed 50 kilowatt (kW) multistage magnetically geared generator (MGG). In order to reduce risk, a sub-scale 5kW multistage MGG was first built. This project will benefit MHK device developers by providing an MHK PTO that overcomes the reliability concerns of the mechanical gears and the sizing constraints of the direct-drive generators. Measurement data for a 9.5:1 gear ratio magnetic gear with a measured peak torque of 227 N-m as well as the dual stage magnetic gear with a 63:1 gear ratio.

ARIS Acoustic Camera Data Around a 5kW In-River Turbine from Tanana River Test Site

Four days (June 14-17, 2021) of ARIS acoustic camera data from the main research barge of the Tanana River Test Site operated by UAF. Data are collected sidelooking with the turbine in part of the field of view. This data was collected as part of a fish collision risk study. An acoustic camera was used rather than a traditional underwater camera due to the high levels of suspended sediments at the Tanana River Test Site.

20 Year Daily Average Modeled Velocity and Discharge for Openwater Season at Five Communities on Kuskokwim River, Alaska

This dataset includes modeled velocity and discharge at five communities in the middle Kuskokwim River region: Aniak, Chuathbaluk, Crooked Creek, Red Devil and Stony River. Modeled velocities and discharge represent daily averages calculated for the openwater season (OWS) from June 1 - October 18 over the 20 year period 2000-2019 using the raw data described below and included in this archive; full details of methodology are described in (Brown et al. submitted to Renewable Energy). Raw data inputs to inform the modeling process include in-situ measurements of 1) discharge with an acoustic Doppler current meter (ADCP, 600kHz Workhorse Rio Grande by Teledyne RD Instruments) and a global positioning receiver (GPS, Trimble 5700, 5800 and R8) utilizing Real Time Kinematic (RTK) GPS mode over 1-2 days at each site in 2009 or 2010 (Ravens 2014), and 2) river stage with a water level logger (HOBO U20-001-01 by Onset) over 2-9 weeks at each site (Ravens 2014), 3) in addition to a 20 year long-term discharge record collected at the USGS stream gage site in Crooked Creek (USGS 2016). Raw data (discharge and stage) are included in this archive for two additional communities: Lower Kalskag and Sleetmute, where modeled velocities were not calculated due to equipment failure or loss. The USGS stream gage data at Crooked Creek (USGS 2016) and stream gage methodology (Turnipseed and Sauer 2010) are publicly available online, so the data are not duplicated here.
