Cable compliance

The object of the investigation was to solve mechanical problems using cable-in-bending and cable-in-torsion. These problems included robotic contacts, targets, and controls using cable compliance. Studies continued in the use of cable compliance for the handicapped and the elderly. These included work stations, walkers, prosthetic knee joints, elbow joints, and wrist joints. More than half of these objects were met, and models were made and studies completed on most of the others. It was concluded that the many different and versatile solutions obtained only opened the door to many future challenges.

Mechanism synthesis and 2-D control designs of an active three cable crane

A Lunar Crane with a suspension system based on a three cable mechanism is investigated to provide a stable end-effector for hoisting, positioning, and assembling large components during construction and servicing of a Lunar Base. The three cable suspension mechanism consists of a structural framework of three cables pointing to a common point that closely coincides with the suspended payload's center of gravity. The vibrational characteristics of this three cable suspension system are investigated by comparing a simple 2-D symmetric suspension model and a swinging pendulum in terms of their analytical natural frequency equations. A study is also made of actively controlling the dynamics of the crane using two different actuator concepts. Also, Lyapunov-based control algorithms are developed to determine two regulator-type control laws performing the system vibrational suppression for both system dynamics. Simulations including initial-valued dynamic responses as well as control performances for two different system dynamics are also presented.

Causes of Cracking of Ignition Cable

The experiments described here show that the cracking at sharp bends, observed in the insulation of internal combustion engine high tension ignition wires after service, is due to a chemical attack upon the rubber by the ozone produced by the electric discharge that takes place at the surface of the cable. This cracking does not occur if the insulating material is not under tension, or if the cable is surrounded by some medium other than air. But it does occur even if the insulation is not subjected to electric stress, provided that the atmosphere near the cable contains ozone. The extent of this cracking varies greatly with the insulating material used. The cracking can be materially reduced by using braided cable and by avoiding sharp bends.

Lightning tests and analyses of tunnel bond straps and shielded cables on the Space Shuttle solid rocket booster

The purposes of the tests and analyses described in this report are as follows: (1) determine the lightning current survivability of five alternative changed designs of the bond straps which electrically bond the solid rocket booster (SRB) systems tunnel to the solid rocket motor (SRM) case; (2) determine the amount of reduction in induced voltages on operational flight (OF) tunnel cables obtained by a modified design of tunnel bond straps (both tunnel cover-to-cover and cover-to-motor case); (3) determine the contribution of coupling to the OF tunnel cables by ground electrical and instrumentation (GEI) cables which enter the systems tunnel from unshielded areas on the surfaces of the motor case; and (4) develop a model (based on test data) and calculate the voltage levels at electronic 'black boxes' connected to the OF cables that run in the systems tunnel.

Smaller but Fully Functional Backshell for Cable Connector

An improved design for the backshell of a connector for a shielded, multiplewire cable reduces the size of the backshell, relative to traditional designs of backshells of otherwise identical cable connectors. Notwithstanding the reduction in size, the design provides all the functionality typically demanded of such a backshell, including (1) termination of the cable shield (that is, grounding of the shield to the backshell), (2) strain relief for the cable, and (3) protection against electromagnetic interference (EMI).

Validation of Measured Damping Trends for Flight-Like Vehicle Panel/Equipment including a Range of Cable Harness Assemblies

This validation study examines the effect on vibroacoustic response resulting from the installation of cable bundles on a curved orthogrid panel. Of interest is the level of damping provided by the installation of the cable bundles and whether this damping could be potentially leveraged in launch vehicle design. The results of this test are compared with baseline acoustic response tests without cables. Damping estimates from the measured response data are made using a new software tool that leverages a finite element model of the panel in conjunction with advanced optimization techniques. While the full test series is not yet complete, the first configuration of cable bundles that was assessed effectively increased the viscous critical damping fraction of the system by as much as 0.02 in certain frequency ranges.

Analysis of a Dynamic Flexed Flat Cable Harness

A dynamic flex test was performed on a spacecraft instrument harness composed of multiple individual flex cables, with each flex cable containing multiple copper traces. The purpose of the test was to demonstrate the capability of the harness to survive the number of expected flex cycles during the planned mission with appropriate margin. However, during testing, increased trace resistances and open circuits were observed beginning at approximately 10% of the total number of planned flex cycles. This paper discusses the various proximate causes that contributed to increased and open resistance in the flex cables and the subsequent redesign, manufacturing, reliability, and quality-related changes that were instituted. An analysis process, including failure analysis, non-destructive evaluation, digital imaging correlation, and parametric modeling, will also be discussed. The paper will cover the development of a robust dynamic flex harness design and include recommendations to extend flex harness life; make changes to the flex harness life test; and improve flex cable manufacturing, quality, and reliability.

Checking flat conductor cable spacing by means of a moire pattern

Moire tester detects small variations in flat conductor cable spacing by a quick, visual inspection. This device compares the cable to be tested with the negative of a very precise standard cable. The moire, consisting of bands of light and dark zones and its irregularities, can be interpreted as errors in spacing.

Dynamics of a spinning space station with a counterweight connected by multiple cables.

A unique and relatively simple approach is presented for obtaining the linearized equations of motion. A conservative system consisting of two rigid bodies connected by any number of massless cables with linear axial stiffness is assumed. The cable forces and torques are expanded in a Taylor series about the equilibrium values of the system coordinates which results in a cable stiffness matrix. The method of obtaining the equilibrium values of the coordinates is discussed and results are presented. The range of validity of the linear model is determined by comparing results with a digital simulation of the nonlinear system.

A proposed adjustable RF cable connector

In system that requires negligible loss, it may be necessary to adjust cable length to exact multiple of transmitted wavelength. Adjustable cable connector saves time and cost by eliminating need to add to or cut from cable. Device was especially designed for use with high frequencies. For particular application, connector of suitable dimensions should be used.
