3D printed water-stable Cd-doped Cs 4 MnBi 2 Cl 12 /polylactic acid perovskite/polymer composites for high-flux X-ray scintillation

Stable and efficient X-ray scintillators are crucial for medical diagnostics, industrial, and defense applications. However, conventional scintillator technologies face a trade-off between stability, optimal performance, and sustainability. Herein, we introduce 3D-printed Cs 4 MnBi 2 Cl 12 (Pero1) and Cs 4 Cd 0.68 Mn 0.32 Bi 2 Cl 12 (Pero2) perovskite microcrystals embedded within a polylactic acid (PLA) polymer composite as X-ray scintillators, combining efficiency, stability, and sustainability. The orange luminescent perovskite powder phosphors exhibited poor water stability, which was successfully addressed through incorporation into PLA via filament extrusion and fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printing. The resulting composite films demonstrated remarkable water stability while maintaining uniform orange emission throughout the polymer matrix, as confirmed by 3D topography scanning and X-ray fluorescence mapping. Structural characterization revealed minimal chemical interaction between the perovskite and PLA matrix, with the composites retaining their crystalline properties. The PLA-Pero2 composite exhibited superior optical properties, with a photoluminescence quantum yield of 47%, nearly 17 times higher than that of PLA-Pero1 (2.8%), attributed to the effective suppression of non-radiative decay pathways through Cd 2+ doping. Under hard X-ray irradiation at synchrotron beamlines, both composites exhibited excellent radioluminescence, with emission peaks at 605 nm, a linear response across a wide X-ray flux range, and remarkable radiation stability, showing less than 3% intensity degradation after 600 seconds of continuous high-dose exposure. The PLA-Pero2 composite achieved a spatial resolution of 5 line pairs per millimeter and a contrast ratio of 0.255. These performance metrics, combined with the polymer's biodegradability and scalability through additive manufacturing, position PLA-based composites as a more sustainable alternative to conventional petroleum-based polymer scintillators for next-generation medical imaging, radiation monitoring, and industrial radiography applications.

Assessment of deep levels with selenium concentration in Cd 1–x Zn x Te 1–y Se y room temperature detector materials

Incorporation of Se into Cd 1–x Zn x Te (CZT) to form the quaternary compound semiconductor Cd 1–x Zn x Te 1–y Se y (CZTS) has proven to be an effective solution for compensating the major flaws associated with CZT, including poor homogeneity and high concentrations of electronically active deep levels that limit the performance of CZT detectors. In order to investigate how deep levels are affected by the Se concentration in CZTS, we performed photoinduced current transient spectroscopy (PICTS) measurements on CZTS crystals grown by the traveling heater method (THM) with 10% atomic Zn and varying atomic percentage of Se from 1.5% to 7.0%. The PICTS scans for up to 4% Se showed an exponential reduction in the capture cross section of deep levels associated with Te secondary phases in conjunction with an increase in a deep level positioned near the mid-gap, which initially increases the electron trapping time before degrading again at higher Se concentrations. The PICTS peaks present in 7% Se were anomalous relative to the other crystals and are expected to originate from transition metal impurities found in the lower-purity CdSe precursor material.

Evidence of decoupling of surface and bulk states in Dirac semimetal Cd 3 As 2

Abstract Dirac semimetals have attracted a great deal of current interests due to their potential applications in topological quantum computing, low-energy electronic devices, and single photon detection in the microwave frequency range. Herein are results from analyzing the low magnetic ( B ) field weak-antilocalization behaviors in a Dirac semimetal Cd 3 As 2 thin flake device. At high temperatures, the phase coherence length l ϕ first increases with decreasing temperature ( T ) and follows a power law dependence of l ϕ ∝ T −0.4 . Below ∼3 K, l ϕ tends to saturate to a value of ∼180 nm. Another fitting parameter α , which is associated with independent transport channels, displays a logarithmic temperature dependence for T > 3 K, but also tends to saturate below ∼3 K. The saturation value, ∼1.45, is very close to 1.5, indicating three independent electron transport channels, which we interpret as due to decoupling of both the top and bottom surfaces as well as the bulk. This result, to our knowledge, provides first evidence that the surfaces and bulk states can become decoupled in electronic transport in Dirac semimetal Cd 3 As 2 .

𝑙-forbidden 𝑀⁢1 strengths near 100 Sn from knockout reactions in Cd and Sn

Neutron knockout reactions on beams of 104,102 Cd and 104 Sn are presented. States in the residual 103,101 Cd and 103 Sn nuclei are populated, including low-lying 7/2 + states of 𝜈⁢𝑔 7/2 character. These states have half-lives ≈ 400 ps due to their low energy and hindered 𝐵⁡(𝑀⁢1;7/2 + →5/2 + ) strengths. The excited-state half-lives were measured using their Doppler-shifted line shapes, and the resulting 𝐵⁡(𝑀⁢1) strengths are compared to valence space in medium similarity renormalization group (VS-IMSRG) calculations. Lastly, the VS-IMSRG calculations underpredict the 𝑙-forbidden 𝑀⁢1 strengths in the 100 Sn region, as well as in other regions of the nuclear chart near 40 Ca and 208 Pb.

Enhanced Dirac node separation in the strained Cd 3 As 2 topological semimetal

In topological semimetals, nodes appear at symmetry points in the Brillouin zone as a result of band inversion, and yield quasirelativistic massless fermions at low energies. Cd 3 As 2 is a three-dimensional topological semimetal that hosts two Dirac cones responsible for a variety of quantum phenomena. In this work, we demonstrate the strain tuning of the Dirac nodes of Cd 3 As 2 through a combination of magneto-optical infrared spectroscopy and high-resolution x-ray-diffraction studies performed on epitaxial films. In these thin films, we observe a giant enhancement of the node separation in momentum space by close to a factor of 4. A combination of experimental measurements and theoretical modeling allows us to relate the origin of this enhancement to a strengthening of the topological band inversion driven by lattice strain. Finally, our results demonstrate how strain can be used as a knob to tune the topological properties of semimetals and to potentially enhance their performance and response for various applications.

Theory for Cd 3 As 2 thin films in the presence of magnetic fields

Here we present a theory for thin films of the Dirac semimetal Cd 3 ⁢As 2 in the presence of magnetic fields. We show that, above a critical thickness, specific subbands n of thin film Cd 3 ⁢As 2 are in a quantum spin Hall insulator regime and study their response to in- and out-of-plane magnetic fields. We find that sufficiently large in-plane Zeeman fields drive the system toward a 2D Dirac semimetal regime, provided the field is directed perpendicular to a high-symmetry mirror plane. For other directions, we find the Dirac points to be weakly gapped. We further investigate how the system responds to finite out-of-plane field components, both starting from the quantum spin Hall regime at small in-plane fields and from the 2D Dirac semimetal regimes at larger in-plane fields, addressing recent experimental observations in A. C. Lygo et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 130, 046201 (2023)] and B. Guo et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 131, 046601 (2023)].

Levels in 125 Cd populated by the β decay of 125 m Ag and 125 Ag

Here, the β decay of 125 m, 125 Ag into levels in 125 Cd was investigated at the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility (HRIBF). Uranium-238 targets were bombarded with 50-MeV protons with an intensity of 15 μ A, and the induced fission products were mass separated and deposited on a moving tape in the center of the VANDLE array consisting of γ detectors and plastic scintillators. A partial decay scheme has been assigned for both β decay of the (9/2 + ) ground state of 125 Ag and its low-lying (1/2 - ) isomer, with the energy of the low-lying (11/2 - ) isomeric state in 125 Cd assigned as 188.5 keV. In addition, β -delayed neutron emission probabilities were also determined to be 1.2(2)% for the (9/2 + ) 125 Ag ground state and 4.6(10)% for the (1/2 - ) isomer, which are substantially lower than the previously reported value.

Acceleration of Near-IR Emission through Efficient Surface Passivation in Cd 3 P 2 Quantum Dots

Fast near-IR (NIR) emitters are highly valuable in telecommunications and biological imaging. The most established NIR emitters are epitaxially grown In x Ga 1-x As quantum dots (QDs), but epitaxial growth has several disadvantages. Colloidal synthesis is a viable alternative that produces a few NIR-emitting materials, but they suffer from long photoluminescence (PL) times. These long PL times are intrinsic in some NIR materials (PbS, PbSe) but are attributed to emission from bright trapped carrier states in others. We show that Cd 3 P 2 QDs possess substantial trap emission with radiative times >10 1 ns. Surface passivation through shell growth or coordination of Lewis acids is shown to accelerate the NIR emission from Cd 3 P 2 QDs by decreasing the amount of trap emission. This finding brings us one step closer to the application of colloidally synthesized QDs as quantum emitters.

All data associated with each figure in the manuscript and supplementary should be available in this dataset. A readme file is also included to provide some guidance. Abstract: Deployment of photovoltaics in space requires devices that combine high-efficiency, low areal mass, and resilience to harsh environments. Historically, high-efficiency multijunction III–V materials have dominated space power systems; however, their high cost and limited manufacturing throughput motivate the exploration of scalable alternatives. While CdTe-based thin-film photovoltaics offer an attractive option, their performance on non-conventional substrates can suffer from front-contact instability under higher-temperature processing. Here, the role of front-contact chemistry in limiting cell performance is investigated using CdTe-based devices fabricated on 150 μm thick Ceria-doped space-qualified 0214 Corning glass. A matrix of four transparent conducting oxides (TCOs: CTO, AZO, ITO, IZO) combined with two n-type emitters (MZO, IGO) reveals chemical stability at the front interface—rather than absorber composition alone—governs recombination losses, voltage deficits, and device reproducibility. Chemically stable front-contact combinations suppress elemental diffusion and interfacial degradation, resulting in significantly improved carrier lifetimes and junction quality. These insights are validated through record-certified Cd(Se,Te) cell efficiencies of 18.4% under AM1.5G and 16.2% under AM0 illumination on ultra-thin glass. Beyond CdTe, this work provides a general framework for the rational selection of TCO/emitter interfaces in superstrate thin-film photovoltaics, including emerging technologies like metal halide perovskites, while enabling high-efficiency, lightweight photovoltaics for space applications.

Laser operation by dissociation of metal complexes. II - New transitions in Cd, Fe, Ni, Se, Sn, Te, V, and Zn

The reported investigation is a continuation of a study conducted by Chou and Cool (1976). The experimental results discussed are partly related to laser transitions in Cd(I), Cd(II), and Zn(II). Laser transitions in Fe(I), Ni(I), Sn(I), Te(I), and V(I) are also considered along with the observation of a laser pulse with two peaks in connection with the study of laser transitions in Se(I). Experiments related to prospective visible laser operation in thallium at 6550 and 6714 are also discussed, giving attention to spontaneous emission measurements at 6550 and 5350 A, the effects of additive molecules, and laser cavity experiments at 6550 and 6714 A.

Application of the regular associated solution model to the Cd-Te and Hg-Te binary systems

The regular associated solution model is used to treat the phase diagrams of the binary II-VI semiconductor alloy systems Hg-Te and Cd-Te. The equations for the species activity coefficients are used without approximations regarding the magnitudes of the various binary interchange energies or the functional dependence on component mol fraction. The values of the four-adjustable parameters required for description of each system are fixed by fitting liquidus data, and the resulting activity coefficients are used to calculate component partial pressures, which are compared with experimental values as an indpendent check of the validity of the model. The results show that the regular associated solution model provides a usefully accurate, but not complete, description for both the Hg-Te and Cd-Te systems. The relationship of this work to previous investigations is discussed.

cD galaxy dynamics and an aged ridge (jet) in 3C 338

The results of VLA observations and possible models for the peculiar structure of 3C 338, a two-arcmin radio source associated with the cD galaxy NGC 6166 in Abell 2199, are presented. The optical parameters for Abell 2199 and NGc 6166 are reviewed, and the VLA observations and reductions are described. The radio structure of 3C 338 including spectral index and polarization distributions are also discussed. Two possible origins for the ridge structure located to the south of the core which has some characteristics of a jet are proposed. The first involves a cooling accretion flow of ICM material onto the cD. The ram pressure of a highly asymmetric flow seems to be sufficient to confine the radio ridge using an accretion rate of 100 solar masses/yr. The second model presumes that the ridge is actually an aged radio jet. The radio engine would have to be intermittent with a period of about ten million years.

Density of liquid Hg(1-x)Cd(x)Te

Negative thermal expansion has been established in liquid Hg(1-x)Cd(x)Te for x less than 0.2 employing a pycnometric method. Pure HgTe increases in density from its melting point at 670 C to a maximum value at 750 C, where normal thermal expansion progressively resumes. The dependence of density on temperature for liquid Hg(1-x)Cd(x)Te arises almost exclusively from the HgTe portion of the melt, while CdTe acts as a diluent. The temperature corresponding to the maximum density changes slightly with composition, increasing by about 5 C for x = 0.1.

An analysis of the bright white dwarf CD - 38 deg 10980

The bright DA white dwarf CD - 38 deg 10980 is comprehensively analyzed using all available data. Detailed comparisons of the overall energy distribution and Lyman-alpha and Balmer profiles are made with theoretical predictions based on a homogeneous grid of model atmospheres. These comparisons yield a consistent, well-defined effective temperature and surface gravity for this star of 24,700 + or - 250 K and log g = 7.95 + or - 0.15, respectively. A new gravitational redshift of 28.4 + or - 4.8 km/s is derived from an IUE high-dispersion spectrum. Conclusions regarding the mass and radius of CD - 38 deg 10980 are also presented.

The heat of formation of Mercury vacancies in Hg(0.8)Cd(0.2)Te

A modified mass loss measurement technique has been employed for the first time for the direct in situ determination of vacancy concentrations in Hg(0.8)Cd(0.2)Te at elevated temperatures. This technique can also be used to establish the pressure-temperature phase diagram for this type of system. The derived mean value for the heat of formation of mercury vacancies in the above alloy is 0.43 eV. Theoretical considerations concerning the vacancy formation in HgTe and in Hg(0.8)Cd(0.2)Te are in qualitative agreement with the experimental value.

Growth and characterization of Hg(1-x)Cd(x)Se alloys

A detailed evaluation of the influence of growth conditions on the radial and axial compositional variations in directionally solidified Hg(1-x)Cd(x)Se alloys was performed. The measured axial compositional profiles were fitted to theoretical profiles to determine the effective solute (CdSe) diffusion coefficient (D) for the Hg(1-x)Cd(x)Se system. The value for D was estimated to be 3.0 + or - 0.5 x 10 to the -5th sq cm/s and did not appear to be significantly affected by the rate of crystal growth. The axial crystal uniformity was shown to be highly growth-rate dependent, with the faster growth rates producing crystals of more uniform composition in the axial direction. The magnitude of the radial variations was also shown to be highly growth-rate dependent, with the slower growth rates producing crystals of greater radial uniformity. This translation rate dependence of the radial uniformity is discussed in terms of lateral solute diffusion and convective interfacial fluid flows.

Alignment of cD-galaxies with their surroundings

For a sample of 122 rich Abell clusters the authors find a strong correlation of the position angle (orientation) of the first-ranked galaxy and its parent cluster. This alignment effect is strongest for cD-galaxies. Formation scenarios for cD galaxies, like the merging scenario, must produce such a strong alignment effect. The authors show some N-body simulations done for this purpose.
