Flux Balancing Control of Ungapped Nanocrystalline Core-Based Transformer in Dual Active Bridge Converters

Transformer flux dc bias is a critical issue, impacting the reliable operation of dual active bridge (DAB) converters especially when ungapped high permeability nanocrystalline core is used. Steady state current dc bias can easily saturate ungapped nanocrystalline transformers, and it is even more dangerous in transient conditions. A dc bias model is proposed to analyze steady state dc bias in different load conditions. The magnetizing current detection is necessary for closed-loop control of dc bias; conductors' position is shown to impact sensor noise, and it is analyzed in detail. To deal with both steady state and transient dc bias, a unified flux balancing control (UFBC) is proposed introducing a predictive bias suppression (PBS) method with closed-loop flux balancing control (CFBC). With the proposed PBS, both primary/secondary current balance and flux balance can be achieved within one switching cycle using UFBC. Power characteristics and interaction between power control and flux balancing control of DAB converters are analyzed, and the CFBC needs to work in a low bandwidth due to sensor bandwidth limitation and interaction between power control and flux balancing control. Lastly, the UFBC is verified on a 300-kW cascaded DAB converter prototype.

Simplified Two-Stage Model Predictive Control for a Hybrid Multilevel Converter With Floating H-Bridge

This paper proposes a simplified two-stage model predictive control (ST-MPC) for a hybrid multilevel converter, which is an active-neutral-point-clamped converter with floating H-bridge (ANPC-H). The objective of the first stage is to select the voltage vector that has the optimal current tracking performance by using a novel geometrical positioning approach in the complex plane. The second stage selects the best switching state among all the available switching states that belong to the same voltage vector obtained in the first stage, to balance dc capacitor voltages and reduce the common mode voltage. The proposed ST-MPC can dramatically reduce the computational burden and ensure the best current tracking by the two-stage structure, such that the execution time is much shorter compared with the conventional MPC. In addition, the geometrical positioning approach in the first stage is generic and can be applicable for any multilevel converters with N-level output; thus, this ST-MPC can be applied for both sevenand nine-level operation of the hybrid ANPC-H converter under different dc voltage ratios. Both simulation results and experimental results obtained on a silicon carbide hybrid ANPC-H converter prototype validate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed ST-MPC strategy.

Improved Frequency-Domain Steady-State Modeling of the Dual-Active-Bridge Converter Considering Finite ZVS Transition Time Effects

This article presents an improved analytical modeling (IAM) approach for the dual-active-bridge (DAB) converter in the frequency-domain. Specifically, finite transition times are incorporated into the improved modeling that are significant in DAB converters operated at high frequency. The IAM approach is first motivated by comparing traditional frequency-domain modeling against realistic simulation results in LTspice. Next, the IAM approach is mathematically developed in an iterative fashion, where the conventional frequency-domain approach is used as the initialization of the operational behavior of the converter. Subsequent iterations of the IAM algorithm incorporate finite rise- and falltimes of device output capacitances based on detailed switching behavior analyses, which may considerably perturb the desired modulation parameters (i.e., phase shift and zero states). While the initially proposed IAM approach demonstrates advantages over ideal modeling, it is still shown to exhibit errors when applied to device transitions with significant nonlinearity in parasitic output capacitance. To account for this, a three-slope approximation to the switching transition is then motivated and developed, which enables significantly improved steady-state prediction accuracy. Simulation and experimental results confirm unacceptable inaccuracies associated with the conventional frequency-domain modeling across a wide range of operating conditions, alongside enhanced accuracy provided by the proposed modeling approach.

Triton Field Trials (TFiT) underwater noise - University of New Hampshire Living Bridge turbine Processed Data

In July 2021, a commercial-off-the-shelf hydrophone was deployed in a free-drifting configuration to measure underwater acoustic emissions and characterize a 25 kW-rated tidal turbine at the University of New Hampshire's Living Bridge Project in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Sampling methods and analysis were performed in alignment with the recently published IEC 62600-40 Technical Specification for acoustic characterization of marine energy converters. Results from this study indicate acoustic emissions from the turbine were below ambient sound levels and therefore did not have a significant impact on the underwater noise levels of the project site. As a component of Pacific Northwest National Laboratory's Triton Field Trials (TFiT) described in a paper published in a Special Issue of Journal of Marine Energy Science and Engineering, this study provides a valuable use case for the IEC 62600-40 Technical Specification framework and further recommendations for cost-effective technologies and methods for measuring underwater noise at future current energy converter project sites. Carbon-Nanotube-Bridging Strategy for Integrating Single Fe Atoms and NiCo Nanoparticles in a Bifunctional Oxygen Electrocatalyst toward High-Efficiency and Long-Life Rechargeable Zinc–Air Batteries

The development of highly efficient and robust bifunctional electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction (ORR) and evolution reactions (OER) is the key issue for realizing high-performance and long-life rechargeable zinc–air batteries (ZABs). However, it is still a great challenge to integrate independent ORR and OER sites in a catalyst with high activity. Here, a carbon nanotube-bridging strategy is proposed to synthesize such a bifunctional oxygen electrocatalyst enriched with highly active single-atom Fe sites for the ORR and high-performance nanosized NiCo hydroxides for the OER. Consequently, the developed catalyst shows a small overpotential difference of 0.686 V. When used as an oxygen electrode catalyst, the corresponding ZAB exhibits a large power density of 219.5 mW cm ₋2 , a small charge–discharge voltage gap of 0.72 V at 10 mA cm ₋2 , and outstanding discharge–charge durability without attenuation after more than 700 cycles. This work proposes a new idea to realize multifunctional catalysts and drives the practical application of ZABs.

Ene Reductase Enabled Intramolecular β–C–H Functionalization of Substituted Cyclohexanones for Efficient Synthesis of Bridged Bicyclic Nitrogen Scaffolds

Herein we report that ene reductases (EREDs) can facilitate an unprecedented intramolecular β-C–H functionalization reaction for the synthesis of bridged bicyclic nitrogen heterocycles containing the 6-azabicyclo[3.2.1]octane scaffold. To streamline the synthesis of these privileged motifs, we developed a gram-scale one-pot chemoenzymatic cascade by combining iridium photocatalysis with EREDs, using readily available N-phenylglycines and cyclohexenones that can be obtained from biomass. Further derivatization using enzymatic or chemical methods can convert 6-azabicyclo[3.2.1]octan-3-one into 6-azabicyclo[3.2.1]octan-3α-ols, which can be potentially utilized for the synthesis of azaprophen and its analogues for drug discovery. Furthermore, mechanistic studies revealed the reaction requires oxygen, presumably to produce oxidized flavin, which can selectively dehydrogenate the 3-substituted cyclohexanone derivatives to form the α,β-unsaturated ketone, which subsequently undergoes spontaneous intramolecular aza-Michael addition under basic conditions.

PCET‐Driven Reactivity of Neptunyl(VI) Yields Oxo‐Bridged Np(V) and Np(IV) Species

Two unconventional polynuclear complexes of neptunium (Np) featuring mono-mathematical equation -oxo motifs have been accessed by proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) reactivity involving the dissolution of neptunyl(VI) diacetate dihydrate (NpO 2 (OAc) 2 (H 2 O) 2 ∙ HOAc) in methanol followed by addition of a pentadentate Schiff-base ligand. One complex is a mixed-valent [Np V ,Np IV , Np V ] trimer with two bridging mathematical equation μ 2 -oxos and the other is a [Np V , Np V ] dimer featuring a single mathematical equation μ 2 -oxo. In both complexes the outer Np centers are capped with terminal oxo ligands. Spectroscopic and spectrokinetic studies aimed at elucidating mechanistic details of complex formation in this system show that intermediate multinuclear [Np V O 2 (OAc)] n species form prior to metal chelation by the ligand; electrolysis experiments demonstrate that production of Np(V) gives rise to asynchronous proton transfer that does not occur otherwise (in the Np(VI) state) as well as condensation with loss of H 2 O and formation of the polynuclear complexes. We attribute the oxo-deficient nature of these products, with respect to conventional actinyl ([AnO 2 ] m+ ) species, to the reduction/condensation reaction sequence of PCET.

Novel Co 5 Cluster Based Triazole Bridged Cobalt-Fluorophosphate: Synthesis, Structure, Magnetic and Heterogeneous Catalytic Epoxidation Studies

A novel triazole bridged cobalt fluorophosphate coordination polymer with the formula {Co 5 (1,2,4-triazole) 2 (OH) 2 (PO 3 F) 4 } n has been synthesized. Single crystal X-ray studies reveal that the compound comprises of Co 5 clusters which ultimately build the whole framework, here all cobalt centers are in octahedral geometry established from continuous shape analysis. All the cobalt centers are in Co(II) oxidation state and the results are supported by the bond valence sum (BVS) calculation. The sample has been characterized by single crystal X-ray, powder X-ray, FTIR and TGA analysis. The compound was tested for olefin catalysis performance and magnetism. Magnetization measurements reveal overall antiferromagnetic interactions among the Co(II) ions. The compound is very active in the catalytic transformation of olefins to their corresponding epoxides. In conclusion, catalytic epoxidation studies reveal that cyclohexene and styrene can be converted up to 97% with almost 65% selectivity of products with higher TON numbers.

Risk assessment of engineering diseases of embankment–bridge transition section for railway in permafrost regions

Abstract The embankment–bridge transition section (EBTS) is one of the zones where railway diseases occur frequently in permafrost regions. Disease risk assessment of EBTSs can provide guidance for maintenance. In this study, considering the engineering geological conditions, climate characteristics, and embankment structure types along the Qinghai–Tibet Railway (QTR) as well as based on the disease inventory of the QTR from 2010 to 2019, the logistic regression (LR), support vector machine (SVM), and combination‐weight‐based gay relation analysis (GRA) were used for disease risk assessment of the EBTSs along the QTR in permafrost regions. The results indicate that the LR and SVM models have a better capability for EBTS disease prediction than the GRA model, and the SVM model can select more disease samples in relatively larger regions than the LR model. Based on the SVM and LR models, the risk level of EBTSs is divided into four classes: low‐ (29.9%), moderate‐ (39.6%), high‐ (22.1%), and very high (8.4%) risk. Finally, we selected 272 EBTSs in high‐ and very‐high‐risk classes for key observation during the maintenance of the QTR in permafrost regions. This study provides a reference for the risk assessment of railways built in permafrost regions using data‐driven methods.

Entanglement and topology in RG flows across dimensions: caps, bridges and corners

We quantitatively address the following question: for a QFT which is partially compactified, so as to realize an RG flow from a D-dimensional CFT in the UV to a d-dimensional CFT in the IR, how does the entanglement entropy of a small spherical region probing the UV physics evolve as the size of the region grows to increasingly probe IR physics? This entails a generalization of spherical regions to setups without full Lorentz symmetry, and we study the associated entanglement entropies holographically. We find a tight interplay between the topology and geometry of the compact space and the evolution of the entanglement entropy, with universal transitions from ‘cap’ through ‘bridge’ and ‘corner’ phases, whose features reflect the details of the compact space. As concrete examples we discuss twisted compactifications of 4d $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 SYM on T 2 , S 2 and hyperbolic Riemann surfaces.

Lithiation bridged molecular conducting magnets

Combining ferromagnetism and metallic conductivity has been extensively studied in contemporary materials science. However, building such multifunctionalities in molecular chemistry is particularly challenging, on which two collective properties are long considered as mutually exclusive. Here, we report molecular conducting magnet consisting of two-dimensional graphene and molecular planar magnetic networks bridged by electrochemical lithiation, exhibiting the co-existence of distinct magnetism and conductivity and magneto-electric coupling effects. Here, the room temperature magnetoresistance and magnetoelectric coupling coefficient of such complex solid reach 10.7% and 1.77 V/Oe cm, respectively, which can be further tailored by modulating the interaction between graphene and molecular magnetic network. In addition, the graphene passivation simultaneously introduces environmental stability of molecular mag-nets. The electrochemical lithiation offers a pathway towards coupling magnetism and conductivity in molecular complexes.

One-dimensional heterocyclic carbene–Au metal–organic frameworks bridging ultra-high vacuum models and scalable liquid-phase growth

The controlled design of molecule–metal interfaces is central to the development of functional nanomaterials for catalysis, sensing, and molecular electronics. Here we show that the adsorption of a Janus-type diimidazolium precursor on gold yields one-dimensional (1D) N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)–Au–NHC metal organic frameworks (MOFs) featuring positively charged gold nodes. Using synchrotron X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), near edge X-ray adsorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy and scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM), we demonstrate that thermal activation promotes counterion removal and drives the formation of extended 1D arrays, characterized by ∼1.0 nm Au–Au spacing and adatom densities up to 0.6 atom nm −2 (∼4% of surface atoms). Importantly, we translate this ultra-high vacuum (UHV) benchmark into a scalable solution-phase protocol in ethanol, enabling 1D-MOF growth under mild, base-free, open-air conditions. The resulting films retain structural and electronic signatures of UHV-grown systems, bridging model studies and practical synthesis. This approach establishes NHC–metal frameworks as accessible, tunable platforms for catalysis and materials design.

Acetate-based biological platforms: Bridging carbon dioxide utilization and high-value bioproduct production in oleaginous yeasts

Acetate is emerging as a promising two-carbon substrate in the circular bioeconomy, bridging the gap between single-carbon sources and high-value biofuels and bioproducts. This review examines the key pathways for acetate production, including the electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide, syngas fermentation, and biological acetogenesis. It focuses on acetate metabolism in oleaginous yeasts, such as Yarrowia lipolytica and Rhodotorula toruloides, which efficiently convert acetate-derived acetyl-CoA units into diverse bioproducts such as lipids, fatty alcohols, triacetic acid lactone, and carotenoids. Recent advances in metabolic engineering, transcriptomics, and metabolic flux analysis have improved the understanding of acetate assimilation in these organisms, thereby increasing their potential for industrial applications. In addition, the feasibility of a biological gas-to-liquid platform that utilizes acetate as a central intermediate for scalable biomanufacturing is discussed. Integrating acetate utilization with sustainable production strategies offers a promising path to advance the bio-based economy. Using acetate as a versatile metabolic intermediate enables the conversion of industrial emissions into biofuels and bioproducts while avoiding the energetic and toxicity constraints associated with direct fermentation of gaseous substrates.

Bridging the gap between NMR measured mean silicate chain length and nano-scale silicate polymorphism of calcium silicate hydrates

Variable stoichiometry and silicate polymorphism in calcium-silicate-hydrates (C-S-H) has impeded the revelation of point defects distribution in the silicate tetrahedral network of C-S-H, which resembles tobermorite crystal structure with some bridging tetrahedra (BT) and paired tetrahedra (PT) vacancies in dreierketten chains. Here we use a computational approach to characterize silicate polymorphism by introducing the vacancy ratio of BT to PT (α) and establishing a three-term empirical mean chain length (MCL) formula for different calcium-to‑silicon ratios (Ca/Si) ranging from 1.2 to 2.3. The formula identifies BT and PT controls at low and high α respectively and allows an inverse mapping of polymorphic range based on NMR experiments. The proposed computational framework quantitatively describes silicate polymorphs and links NMR-measured MCL to C-S-H atomistic configurations at the molecular level.

An extended three-field principle to scale-bridge the granular micromechanics of polymer-bonded particulate materials

Observed phenomena of damage, viscoelasticity, and viscoplasticity in polymer-bonded particulate materials (PBPM), like polymer-bonded explosive (PBX), are accommodated in a scale-bridging constitutive model based on granular micromechanics. An extended three-field variational principle with min - max optimization problem is introduced to homogenize the bonded aggregates’ grain-scale contact mechanics. Similarly to prior applications of a three-field principle, volume constraints are invoked to embed microscale-to-macroscale correspondences for kinematic and static volumetric measures, like mean strain and its energy-conjugate stress invariant. Unlike prior applications, our three-field principle realizes a strain-driven model for effective constitutive behavior due to bonded intergranular contact. In conclusion, the resultant micro-sphere integration-based homogenization is demonstrated in comparison to existing publicly-available measurements to capture the extreme tension/compression constitutive asymmetry exhibited by PBPMs (specifically PBX-9501) during material softening.

Bridging semantics, control specifications and assessment: A library for scalable demand flexibility controls

There is growing recognition that Demand Flexibility (DF) can play a major role in enhancing grid reliability, with building control applications emerging as key enablers for DF. However, the traditional approach to deploying new control applications in buildings, including those for DF, remains largely manual and tailored to individual buildings, making it difficult to scale. While research efforts have explored semantics-driven portability, DF controls specification, and assessment approaches, these initiatives are fragmented and limited in scope. This paper proposes a novel methodology, grounded in design science research, to integrate these elements and create a comprehensive DF controls library for both industry and academia. This approach is applied to develop the Demand FLEXibility controls LIBrary using Semantics (DFLEXLIBS), an extensible open-source library that provides DF controls for HVAC systems in Python. DFLEXLIBS enables portable, easy-to-deploy controls that abstract building-specific data points, facilitating assessment across diverse buildings. DFLEXLIBS features nine different control applications, and it is successfully implemented and tested across four virtual and two real buildings, bridging the gap between semantics-driven portability, DF controls specification, and rigorous performance assessment. Its benefits are measured by a reusability ratio greater than 90% and a functional overlap ratio of around 70% for the most common functions used in the library, significantly reducing time for deploying new controls.

Lithium superoxide-based high rate Li-Air batteries enabled by Di-iridium sulfur bridge active sites

Li-oxygen (Li-O 2 ) batteries can potentially provide much higher energy density than Li-ion batteries; however, the practical application of these batteries is hindered due to several drawbacks such as low current rates and high overpotential for the charging process. Here, in this paper, we report a novel Li-Air battery system that operates under high current rates (up to 1mAcm -2 ) with LiO 2 as the primary discharge product instead of the commonly reported Li 2 O 2 . This LiO 2 based battery at high rates is through a combination of an as-synthesized new one-dimensional (1D) transition metal trichalcogenide mid-entropy alloy of SnIrS 3.6 as a cathode catalyst and an electrolyte blend with a SnI 2 bi-functional additive. It is revealed that SnIrS 3.6 has a microporous structure composed of six- and five-coordinated metal atoms, forming octahedral and triangular bipyramids which has not been observed in other layered chalcogeide materials. DFT calculations reveal that the SnIrS 3.6 structure can result in LiO 2 formation through di-iridium sulfur bridge active sites that results in strong binding of O 2 and LiO 2 preventing disproportionation to Li 2 O 2 and enabling high rates. This finding will open a new perspective in designing advanced LiO 2 -based Li-O 2 batteries for real practices.

New data-driven approach to bridging power system protection gaps with deep learning

Protection is a critical function in power systems to avoid equipment damage, maintain personnel safety, and support system reliability. However, current protective relay technology cannot adequately protect equipment and personnel from effects of some events; these deficiencies are termed protection gaps. In this paper, a data-driven approach is proposed to complement traditional protection technology and distinguish fault conditions from transients caused by normal operations. A combined convolutional neural network and long short-term memory (CNN-LSTM) network is implemented to achieve data translation invariance and capture the temporal correlation of the time-series input data. As a result, the data-driven method can accurately detect system faults despite variation and noise in the input data. In addition, using the CNN-LSTM--based method avoids the complicated, manual feature extraction procedure required by many traditional data-driven methods. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is tested on two kinds of protection gaps: high-impedance faults and transformer inter-turn faults. Lastly, a transfer learning method is also proposed to address the common issue of data-driven methods for which real-world training data are scarce. Extensive study results demonstrate that the proposed approach can accurately bridge power system protection gaps.
