Polarized Bidirectional Reflectance of Optically Thick Sparse Particulate Layers: an Efficient Numerically Exact Radiative-Transfer Solution

We describe a simple yet efficient numerical algorithm for computing polarized bidirectional reflectance of an optically thick (semi-infinite), macroscopically flat layer composed of statistically isotropic and mirror symmetric random particles. The spatial distribution of the particles is assumed to be sparse, random, and statistically uniform. The 44 Stokes reflection matrix is calculated by iterating the Ambartsumian's vector nonlinear integral equation. The result is a numerically exact solution of the vector radiative transfer equation and as such fully satisfies the energy conservation law and the fundamental reciprocity relation. Since this technique bypasses the computation of the internal radiation field, it is very fast and highly accurate. The FORTRAN implementation of the technique is publicly available on the World Wide Web at http://www.giss.nasa.gov/staff/ mmishchenko/brf. It can be combined with several existing computer programs providing the requisite single-scattering properties of spherical or morphologically complex particles and applied to a wide range of optical characterization problems. Benchmark results obtained with this program can be used for testing alternative solvers of the vector radiative transfer equation.

Modeling Spectralon's Bidirectional Reflectance for In-Flight Calibration of Earth-Orbiting Sensors

This paper describes the results of a model inversion which was conducted using measured Spectralon BRDF data at several illumination angles. We can describe the bidirectional reflectance of the Spectralon and in paticular its slight anisotrophy with a physically-based model. The root mean square difference between the model and the observations is currently of the order of the noise in the data (+/-1%). It is expected that meaningful corrections to account for the anisotrophy of the Spectralon panels will be achieved in the next few years and will improve the calibration of the MISR instrument.

Imputation of urban environmental sensor data using gated attention bidirectional long short-term memory (GA-BiLSTM): methods, performance, and implications

Urban environmental monitoring networks frequently encounter significant data gaps due to sensor malfunctions, environmental disturbances, and communication failures. Reliable approaches to address these gaps are essential for ensuring the continuity and quality of environmental data streams. In this study, we developed a gated attention bidirectional long short-term memory (GA-BiLSTM) model to impute missing data in a dense urban monitoring network. Using observations from the CROCUS network in Chicago, we evaluated GA-BiLSTM against widely used approaches (XGBoost and K-nearest neighbors) under scenarios of both short-term intermittent gaps and prolonged outages. GA-BiLSTM consistently outperformed comparative methods, particularly during extended outages of up to ten days, demonstrating its ability to capture spatiotemporal dependencies across sensor nodes. Beyond performance metrics, feature importance and spatial network analyses highlighted the unexpected but critical predictive role of peripheral rural nodes, underlining their strategic value for maintaining robust urban monitoring systems. These results emphasize that advanced imputation methods can substantially improve the reliability of environmental monitoring networks and support more resilient data infrastructures for urban sustainability.

Automated bidirectional coupling of multiscale models of aerosol dosimetry: Validation with subject-specific deposition data

Assessing the toxicity of airborne particulate matter or the efficacy of inhaled drug depends upon accurate estimates of deposited fraction of inhaled materials. In silico approaches can provide important insights into site- or airway-specific deposition of inhaled aerosols in the respiratory system. In this study, we improved on our recently developed 3D/1D model that simulate aerosol transport and deposition in the whole lung over multiple breath cycles. A subject-specific multiscale lung model of a healthy male subject using computational fluid-particle dynamics (CFPD) in a 3D model of the oral cavity through the large bronchial airways entering each lobe was bidirectionally coupled with a recently improved Multiple Path Particle Dosimetry (MPPD) model to predict aerosol deposition over the entire respiratory tract over multiple breaths for four conditions matching experimental aerosol exposures in the same subject from which the model was developed. These include two particle sizes (1 and 2.9 μm) and two subject-specific breathing rates of ~300 ml/s (slow breathing) and ~750 ml/s (fast breathing) at a target tidal volume of 1 L. In silico predictions of retained fraction were 0.31 and 0.29 for 1 μm and 0.66 and 0.62 for 2.9 μm during slow and fast breathing, respectively, and compared well with experimental data (1 μm: 0.31 ± 0.01 (slow) and 0.27 ± 0.01 (fast), 2.9 μm: 0.63 ± 0.03 (slow) and 0.68 ± 0.02 (fast)). Furthermore, these results provide a great deal of confidence in the validity and reliability of our approach.

Highly tail-asymmetric lipids interdigitate and cause bidirectional ordering

Phospholipids form structurally and compositionally diverse membranes. A less studied type of compositional diversity involves phospholipid tail variety. Some phospholipids contain two acyl tails which differ in length. These tail-asymmetric lipids are shown to contribute to temperature sensitivity, oxygen adaptability, and membrane fluidity. Membranes of a highly virulent intracellular bacterium, Francisella tularensis, contain highly tail-asymmetric 1-lignoceroyl-2-decanoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphatidylethanolamine (XJPE) lipids which were previously shown to inhibit inflammatory responses in host cells. XJPE tails have unusually high asymmetry, and how they contribute to membrane properties on a molecular level is unknown. Here, we use small angle X-ray scattering and molecular dynamics simulations to investigate how varying XJPE ratios alters properties of simple membranes. Our results demonstrate that at high concentration they promote liquid-to-gel transition in otherwise liquid membranes, while at low concentration they are tolerated well, minimally altering membrane properties. In liquid membranes, XJPE lipids dynamically adopt two main conformations; with the long tail extended into the opposing leaflet or bent-back residing in its own leaflet. When added to both leaflets XJPE primarily adopts an extended confirmation, while asymmetric addition results in more bent-back orientations. The former increases tail ordering and the latter decreases it. XJPE tails adopt different conformations that induce composition- and leaflet-dependent bidirectional effect on membrane fluidity and this suggests that Francisella tularensis could use tail asymmetry to facilitate vesicle fusion and destabilize host cells. The effect of tail-asymmetric lipids on complex membranes should be further investigated to reveal the regulatory roles of high tail asymmetry.

Bidirectional Suzuki Catalyst Transfer Polymerization of Poly( p -phenylene)

Suzuki catalyst transfer polymerization (SCTP) has emerged as an effective method for accessing length-controlled π-conjugated poly(p-phenylene). Regio-controlled functional group sequencing along the backbone and the chain ends of synthetic polymers remains a challenge for the successful integration of organic semiconductors in sensors and electronic devices. Here, we report a bidirectional SCTP system based on dinuclear palladium(II) initiators. Functional groups transferred during the initiation and termination steps unlock independently addressable synthetic handles at the polymer core and respective chain ends. These functional groups open opportunities for late-stage regio-controlled and chemoselective derivatizations. Control over key polymer parameters, including molecular weight (M n ), dispersity ( Đ = M w /M n ), degree of polymerization ( DP ), termination efficiency, and functional group interconversion, is corroborated by size exclusion chromatography (SEC) and NMR spectroscopy. The modular design of SCTP initiators, in combination with commercially available terminating groups, represents a highly flexible toolbox for late-stage polymer conjugation, e.g., chemoselective anchoring groups for integration with functional electronics or bioorthogonal conjugation for molecular sensing.

Bidirectional interconversion of microwave and light with thin-film lithium niobate

Abstract Superconducting cavity electro-optics presents a promising route to coherently convert microwave and optical photons and distribute quantum entanglement between superconducting circuits over long-distance. Strong Pockels nonlinearity and high-performance optical cavity are the prerequisites for high conversion efficiency. Thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) offers these desired characteristics. Despite significant recent progresses, only unidirectional conversion with efficiencies on the order of 10 −5 has been realized. In this article, we demonstrate the bidirectional electro-optic conversion in TFLN-superconductor hybrid system, with conversion efficiency improved by more than three orders of magnitude. Our air-clad device architecture boosts the sustainable intracavity pump power at cryogenic temperatures by suppressing the prominent photorefractive effect that limits cryogenic performance of TFLN, and reaches an efficiency of 1.02% (internal efficiency of 15.2%). This work firmly establishes the TFLN-superconductor hybrid EO system as a highly competitive transduction platform for future quantum network applications.

Observation of solid-state bidirectional thermal conductivity switching in antiferroelectric lead zirconate (PbZrO 3 )

Materials with tunable thermal properties enable on-demand control of temperature and heat flow, which is an integral component in the development of solid-state refrigeration, energy scavenging, and thermal circuits. Although gap-based and liquid-based thermal switches that work on the basis of mechanical movements have been an effective approach to control the flow of heat in the devices, their complex mechanisms impose considerable costs in latency, expense, and power consumption. As a consequence, materials that have multiple solid-state phases with distinct thermal properties are appealing for thermal management due to their simplicity, fast switching, and compactness. Thus, an ideal thermal switch should operate near or above room temperature, have a simple trigger mechanism, and offer a quick and large on/off switching ratio. In this study, we experimentally demonstrate that manipulating phonon scattering rates can switch the thermal conductivity of antiferroelectric PbZrO 3 bidirectionally by –10% and +25% upon applying electrical and thermal excitation, respectively. Our approach takes advantage of two separate phase transformations in PbZrO 3 that alter the phonon scattering rate in different manners. In this study, we demonstrate that PbZrO 3 can serve as a fast (<1 second), repeatable, simple trigger, and reliable thermal switch with a net switching ratio of nearly 38% from ~1.20 to ~1.65 W m –1 K –1 .

Efficient bidirectional quantum frequency conversion between telecom and visible bands using adaptively phase-matched III-V nanophotonic waveguides

Quantum frequency conversion (QFC) is essential for interfacing quantum systems operating at different wavelengths and for realizing scalable quantum networks. Despite extensive progress, achieving QFC with simultaneous high efficiency, low pump power, minimal noise, broad bandwidth, and pump-wavelength flexibility remains challenging. Here, we demonstrate efficient, low-noise, and bidirectional QFC between the telecom (1550-nm) and visible (780-nm) bands using unpoled indium gallium phosphide (InGaP) χ (2) nanophotonic waveguides, eliminating the need for a long-wavelength pump. Leveraging the large nonlinear susceptibility of InGaP together with adaptive phase-matching control, we obtain 27% (55%) internal efficiency in a 6-mm (2.5-mm)-long waveguide with a low pump power of 20 mW (50 mW) and a noise flux spectral density of 10 −4 counts per second per hertz at signal–pump detuning of 20 nm. These results mark a significant advance in integrated nonlinear photonics for high-performance QFC, facilitating the development of versatile and scalable quantum networks.

Indefinite and bidirectional near-infrared nanocrystal photoswitching

Materials whose luminescence can be switched by optical stimulation drive technologies ranging from superresolution imaging, nanophotonics, and optical data storage, to targeted pharmacology, optogenetics, and chemical reactivity. Furthermore, these photoswitchable probes, including organic fluorophores and proteins, can be prone to photodegradation and often operate in the ultraviolet or visible spectral regions. Colloidal inorganic nanoparticles can offer improved stability, but the ability to switch emission bidirectionally, particularly with near-infrared (NIR) light, has not, to our knowledge, been reported in such systems. Here, we present two-way, NIR photoswitching of avalanching nanoparticles (ANPs), showing full optical control of upconverted emission using phototriggers in the NIR-I and NIR-II spectral regions useful for subsurface imaging. Employing single-step photodarkening and photobrightening, we demonstrate indefinite photoswitching of individual nanoparticles (more than 1,000 cycles over 7 h) in ambient or aqueous conditions without measurable photodegradation. Critical steps of the photoswitching mechanism are elucidated by modelling and by measuring the photon avalanche properties of single ANPs in both bright and dark states. Unlimited, reversible photoswitching of ANPs enables indefinitely rewritable two-dimensional and three-dimensional multilevel optical patterning of ANPs, as well as optical nanoscopy with sub-Å localization superresolution that allows us to distinguish individual ANPs within tightly packed clusters.

Unified Medical Language System resources improve sieve-based generation and Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT)–based ranking for concept normalization

Concept normalization, the task of linking phrases in text to concepts in an ontology, is useful for many downstream tasks including relation extraction, information retrieval, etc. We present a generate-and-rank concept normalization system based on our participation in the 2019 National NLP Clinical Challenges Shared Task Track 3 Concept Normalization. The shared task provided 13 609 concept mentions drawn from 100 discharge summaries. We first design a sieve-based system that uses Lucene indices over the training data, Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) preferred terms, and UMLS synonyms to generate a list of possible concepts for each mention. We then design a listwise classifier based on the BERT (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers) neural network to rank the candidate concepts, integrating UMLS semantic types through a regularizer. Our generate-and-rank system was third of 33 in the competition, outperforming the candidate generator alone (81.66% vs 79.44%) and the previous state of the art (76.35%). During postevaluation, the model’s accuracy was increased to 83.56% via improvements to how training data are generated from UMLS and incorporation of our UMLS semantic type regularizer. Analysis of the model shows that prioritizing UMLS preferred terms yields better performance, that the UMLS semantic type regularizer results in qualitatively better concept predictions, and that the model performs well even on concepts not seen during training. Our generate-and-rank framework for UMLS concept normalization integrates key UMLS features like preferred terms and semantic types with a neural network–based ranking model to accurately link phrases in text to UMLS concepts.

Bidirectional Ultrafast Control of Charge Density Waves via Phase Competition

The intricate competition between coexisting charge density waves (CDWs) can lead to rich phenomena, offering unique opportunities for phase manipulation through electromagnetic stimuli. Here, leveraging time-resolved x-ray diffraction, we demonstrate ultrafast control of a CDW in EuTe 4 upon optical excitation. At low excitation intensities, the amplitude of one of the coexisting CDW orders increases at the expense of the competing CDW, whereas at high intensities, it exhibits a nonmonotonic temporal evolution characterized by both enhancement and reduction. This transient bidirectional controllability, tunable by adjusting photoexcitation intensity, arises from the interplay between optical quenching and phase-competition-induced enhancement. Our findings, supported by phenomenological time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory simulations, not only clarify the relationship between the two CDWs in EuTe 4 , but also highlight the versatility of optical control over order parameters enabled by phase competition.

Empirical radius formulas for canonical neutron stars from bidirectionally selecting features of equations of state in extended Bayesian analyses of observational data

Significant advancement in Bayesian inference of nuclear equation of state (EOS) from gravitational wave and x-ray observations of neutron stars (NSs) has been made by the nuclear astrophysics community especially since GW170817. By extending the traditional Bayesian analysis which normally ends at presenting the marginalized posterior probability distribution functions (PDFs) of individual EOS parameters and their correlations (or sometimes only the Pearson correlation coefficients which are only reliably useful when the variables are linearly correlated while they are actually often not), we search for a data-driven and robust empirical formula for the radius 𝑅 1.4 of canonical NSs in terms of the characteristic EOS parameters (features). We also identify the single most important but currently poorly known EOS parameter for determining the 𝑅 1.4 . Using three regression-model-building methodologies: bidirectional stepwise feature selection, least absolute shrinkage selection operator (LASSO) regression, and neural network regression on a large set of posterior EOSs and the corresponding 𝑅 1.4 values inferred from earlier comprehensive Bayesian analyses of NS observational data, we systematically and rigorously develop the most probable 𝑅 1.4 formulas with varying statistical accuracy and technical complexity. Here, the most important EOS parameters for determining 𝑅 1.4 are found consistently in each of the feature selection processes to be (in order of decreasing importance): curvature 𝐾 sym , slope 𝐿, skewness 𝐽 sym of nuclear symmetry energy, skewness 𝐽 0 , incompressibility 𝐾 0 of symmetric nuclear matter, and the magnitude 𝐸 sym ⁡(𝜌 0 ) of symmetry energy at the saturation density 𝜌 0 of nuclear matter.

This paper presents the design and optimization of the high-frequency transformer for an isolated single-stage threephase AC/DC converter enabled by the 4H-SiC BiDirectional Field Effect Transistor (BiDFET). Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA-II) is used to perform a multiobjective optimization to minimize loss, weight, and volume. A 20 kW, 50 kHz hardware prototype based on the selected optimal point is characterized by a power amplifier. The finite element analysis simulation results are also presented to validate the core magnetic flux density and winding electric field strength. The experimental prototype was tested at 800 Vdc/480 Vrms at 10 kW rated power.

Online Power System Event Detection via Bidirectional Generative Adversarial Networks

Accurate and speedy detection of power system events is critical to enhancing the reliability and resiliency of power systems. Although supervised deep learning algorithms show great promise in identifying power system events, they require a large volume of high-quality event labels for training. This paper develops a bidirectional anomaly generative adversarial network (GAN)-based algorithm to detect power system events using streaming PMU data, which does not rely on a huge amount of event labels. By introducing conditional entropy constraint in the objective function of GAN and graph signal processing-based PMU sorting technique, our proposed algorithm significantly outperforms state-of-the-art event detection algorithms in terms of accuracy. To facilitate the adoption of the proposed algorithm, a prototype online platform is also developed using Apache Hadoop, Kafka, and Spark to enable real-time event detection. Here, the accuracy and computational efficiency of the proposed algorithm are validated using a large-scale real-world PMU dataset from the Eastern Interconnection of the United States.
