Blockade of beta-adrenoceptors enhances cAMP signal transduction in vivo

The aim of this study was to determine whether the blockade of beta-adrenoceptors would enhance cAMP-mediated signal transduction processes in vivo. The administration of the membrane permeable cAMP analogue, 8-(4-chlorophenylthiol)-cAMP (8-CPT-cAMP, 10 micromol/kg, i.v.) produced an increase in heart rate (+27 +/- 2%, P < 0.05), a fall in mean arterial blood pressure (-21 +/- 3%, P < 0.05) and falls in hindquarter (-12 +/- 3%, P < 0.05) and mesenteric (-32 +/- 3%, P < 0.05) vascular resistances in pentobarbital-anesthetized rats. The beta-adrenoceptor antagonist, propranolol (1 mg/kg, i.v.) lowered heart rate (-12 +/- 3%, P < 0.05) but did not affect mean arterial blood pressure or vascular resistances. The tachycardia, hypotension and vasodilation produced by 8-CPT-cAMP were exaggerated after administration of propranolol (P < 0.05 for all comparisons). The nitric oxide-donor, sodium nitroprusside (2 microg/kg, i.v.), produced falls in mean arterial blood pressure and vascular resistances of similar magnitude to those produced by 8-CPT-cAMP. These sodium nitroprusside-induced responses were unaffected by propranolol (P < 0.05 for all comparisons). Sodium nitroprusside also produced a minor increase in heart rate (+5 +/- 1%, P < 0.05) which was abolished by propranolol. These findings suggest that 8-CPT-cAMP directly increases heart rate and that blockade of beta-adrenoceptors enhances the potency of cAMP within the heart and vasculature.

Anti-dopamine beta-hydroxylase immunotoxin-induced sympathectomy in adult rats

Anti-dopamine beta-hydroxylase immunotoxin (DHIT) is an antibody-targeted noradrenergic lesioning tool comprised of a monoclonal antibody against the noradrenergic enzyme, dopamine beta-hydroxylase, conjugated to saporin, a ribosome-inactivating protein. Noradrenergic-neuron specificity and completeness and functionality of sympathectomy were assessed. Adult, male Sprague-Dawley rats were given 28.5, 85.7, 142 or 285 micrograms/kg DHIT i.v. Three days after injection, a 6% to 73% decrease in the neurons was found in the superior cervical ganglia of the animals. No loss of sensory, nodose and dorsal root ganglia, neurons was observed at the highest dose of DHIT. In contrast, the immunotoxin, 192-saporin (142 micrograms/kg), lesioned all three ganglia. To assess the sympathectomy, 2 wk after treatment (285 micrograms/kg), rats were anesthetized with urethane (1 g/kg) and cannulated in the femoral artery and vein. DHIT-treated animals' basal systolic blood pressure and heart rate were significantly lower than controls. Basal plasma norepinephrine levels were 41% lower in DHIT-treated animals than controls. Tyramine-stimulated release of norepinephrine in DHIT-treated rats was 27% of controls. Plasma epinephrine levels of DHIT animals were not reduced. DHIT-treated animals exhibited a 2-fold hypersensitivity to the alpha-adrenergic agonist phenylephrine. We conclude that DHIT selectively delivered saporin to noradrenergic neurons resulting in destruction of these neurons. Anti-dopamine beta-hydroxylase immunotoxin administration produces a rapid, irreversible sympathectomy.

C-4 155 nm line in beta Cephei

The class of early B variable stars known as beta Cephei stars are characterized by short-period radial velocity and light variations. The coolest stars of this group have an effective temperature of about 20,000 K and the hottest, about 28,000 K. These stars are not related to the classical Cepheids whose temperatures are of the order of 6000 K. The amplitude of the radial velocity variation beta Cephei stars is in the tens of kilometers per second and the light variation is less than 0.2 mag, that is, less than 10 percent. The fastest pulsation interval is 3 hr and the slowest is 6 hr. The prototype beta Cephei has a period of 4 hr 34 min. Ultraviolet observations were taken using OAO 2 to investigate the relationship between the visual and the ultraviolet variations.

Environmental hydrogen embrittlement of an alpha-beta titanium alloy - Effect of microstructure.

Study of environmental hydrogen embrittlement of a Ti-6 Al-4 alloy as a function of test displacement rate and of variations in alpha-beta microstructure. Embrittlement in low-pressure (about 1 atm) gaseous hydrogen was inversely dependent on test displacement rate and strongly dependent on microstructure. At a given displacement rate, microstructures having a continuous alpha-phase matrix were less severely embrittled than those having a continuous beta-phase matrix. Further, brittle fracture occurred in the former microstructures by transgranular cleavage and in the latter microstructures by intergranular separation. These observations are consistent with previous studies made on slow strain-rate embrittlement of hydrogen-charged titanium alloys and are explained in terms of relative hydrogen transport rates within the alpha-phase and beta-phase titanium.

The occultation of beta Scorpii by Jupiter and Io. I - Jupiter.

Use of computer-controlled one-dimensional area-scanning photometers to observe the occultation of the Beta Scorpii system by Jupiter on May 13, 1971. Six high-quality light curves were obtained; three of the occultations of the brighter component Beta Sco A and three of Beta Sco C. The mean scale height of the Jovian upper atmosphere is 32 plus or minus 6 km near -10 deg zenographic latitude, 31 plus or minus 2 km at -47 deg zenographic latitude, and 24 plus or minus 2 km at -57 deg zenographic latitude. The determination of the atmospheric scale height is highly sensitive to the background level subtracted, providing a possible explanation of an earlier result by Baum and Code (1953) placing the scale height at about 8 km. Correlated departures of the light curve from a theoretical isothermal curve are reproduced in the three bright-star curves, and are thus not due to random density fluctuations in the Jovian atmosphere, but are rather due to global stratification. Details of the stratification, which includes at least a number of warm layers, are examined by deconvolution of the light curves. There is evidence for a high-temperature (T greater than 300 K) thermosphere on two of the bright-star light curves.

Paschen beta emission in the spectrum of Omicron Ceti.

Evaluation of three infrared spectra of Omicron Ceti obtained on Aug. 7 to 11, 1969. The equivalent width of the Paschen beta emission line in these spectra was found to vary by a factor of 2 during this time period. The variation was similar to that for H gamma and H delta as measured by Odell et al. (1970) for the same time span. The equivalent widths of Paschen beta and H gamma on August 7 were used to estimate an opacity ratio of kappa (1.28 micron)/kappa (0.43 micron) about equal to 1:30 and a molecular/atomic hydrogen ratio of about 10. The variation in the strength of Paschen beta and H delta lines is considered to be intrinsic and to have a time scale of less than or about equal to 100,000 sec.

Cardiac beta-adrenergic receptors and coronary hemodynamics in the conscious dog during hypoxic hypoxia.

The mechanisms by which acute hypoxia (10% and 5% oxygen) mediates changes in coronary blood flow and cardiac function were investigated in the conscious dog. When the dogs breathed hypoxic gas mixtures through a tracheostomy, both arterial and coronary sinus oxygen tensions were significantly decreased. With 5% oxygen, there were significant increases in heart rate (25%), maximum left ventricular dP/dt (39%), left circumflex coronary artery blood flow (163%), and left ventricular oxygen consumption (52%), which were attenuated by beta-adrenergic blockage with propranolol. When electrical pacing was used to keep the ventricular rate constant during hypoxia, there was no significant difference in coronary blood flow before and after beta blockade. Beta-adrenergic receptor activity in the myocardium participates in the integrated response to hypoxia although it may not cause active vasodilation of the coronary vessels.

The beta distribution: A statistical model for world cloud cover

Much work has been performed in developing empirical global cloud cover models. This investigation was made to determine an underlying theoretical statistical distribution to represent worldwide cloud cover. The beta distribution with probability density function is given to represent the variability of this random variable. It is shown that the beta distribution possesses the versatile statistical characteristics necessary to assume the wide variety of shapes exhibited by cloud cover. A total of 160 representative empirical cloud cover distributions were investigated and the conclusion was reached that this study provides sufficient statical evidence to accept the beta probability distribution as the underlying model for world cloud cover.

Underluminosity and magnetic fields in Beta Lyrae

A combination of available observational data for Beta Lyrae and theoretical models of evolution in close binary systems in used to show that the minimum underluminosity of the dark secondary component of this system is 1 to 4 mag. It is demonstrated that magnetic fields are probably relatively weak in massive main-sequence stars, including the two stellar components of Beta Lyrae, and therefore that a strong magnetic field is not a likely explanation for the underluminosity of the secondary component of Beta Lyrae.

Further evidence for a black hole in Beta Lyrae.

Comments regarding an interpretation of the OAO-2 observations of Beta Lyrae are presented. This interpretation had been reported by Wilson (1971). Six color UV curves represent the first continual coverage of a single cycle of Beta Lyr. Explanations for the deepening secondary minimum in the far UV are discussed. It is pointed out that the secondary component is apparently a massive object. The 'black hole' model represents one approach to interpret the observations of Beta Lyr.

Photographic observations of the occultation of Beta Scorpii by Jupiter.

The occultation of the multiple star Beta Scorpii by Jupiter was observed visually and photographically from the Bosscha Observatory in Lembang (Java), Indonesia, on May 13, 1971. The photographs recorded the dimming of the stars as the light was differentially refracted by the Jovian atmosphere, and gave support to a scale height much greater than 8 and more nearly 30 km. In addition, during the ingress of Beta Scorpii, flashes up to 1 second long were observed visually, occurring at irregular intervals, spaced by 2-8 seconds, over a total period of 7 minutes. Measurements of the position of the brightest component of Beta Scorpii during ingress shows refraction of approximately 1.4 sec before becoming unobservable.

Solute effects on deformation and fracture of beta brass

It is shown that the ductility of several ternary beta brass alloys in air and in several liquid metals can be related to the operative slip and grain boundary relaxation processes. Nickel and manganese were chosen as alloying elements because they are expected to respectively enhance and suppress cross slip in beta brass. Single-phase binary and ternary beta brass alloys were used in both polycrystalline and single crystal form.

Observations on the deformation-induced beta internal friction peak in bcc metals

During a study of the effects of electron irradiation on the tungsten alpha mechanism, internal friction data were obtained. The data indicate that the mechanism underlying the beta peak does not possess the relaxation parameters generally associated with a simple dislocation process. The significance of the experimental results in the light of beta observations in other metals is discussed. It is suggested that the beta peaks in deformed bcc metals are the anelastic result of the thermally-activated relaxation of deformation-induced imperfections.

Collisionless shock waves in space - A very high beta structure

Measurements from six OGO-5 particle and field experiments are used to examine the structure of the earth's bow shock during a period of extremely high beta (the ratio of plasma thermal to magnetic energy density), as determined from simultaneous measurements of the upstream plasma on board the HEOS satellite. Even though the interplanetary field is nearly perpendicular to the shock normal, the shock is extremely turbulent. Large field increases are observed up to a factor of 20 above the upstream values. Ahead of these large enhancements, smaller magnetic effects accompanied by electrostatic noise, electron heating, and ion deflection are observed for several minutes. These observations suggest that a steady-state shock may not be able to form at very high beta. Further, they show that while the magnetic energy density may be relatively unimportant in the upstream flow, it can become very significant within the shock structure, and hence the magnetic field should not be ignored in theoretical treatments of very high beta shocks.

Beta-FeOOH, akaganeite, in lunar rocks

Experiments were conducted to determine the nature of the alteration process in lunar rocks. Mixtures of 10 wt.% Fe + 10 wt.% FeCl2 + 80 wt.% basalt (terrestrial) were pelletized and allowed to set for 48 hrs at 25 C, at 40% and at 100% relative humidity. The end products were examined by reflected-light microscopy and by X-ray diffraction. The degree of reaction appears to depend upon the amount of FeCl2, the availability of water and the Ni content of the metallic Fe. The experiments showed the extremely rapid rate at which the oxyhydration can occur in air and that the product is beta-FeOOH. The data from the FeOOH mineral in rock 66095 were compared with those obtained from synthetic beta-FeOOH and found to be identical. The 'rust' in the Apollo 16 rocks could result from oxyhydration of the samples, caused by water vapor contamination, all or part of which occurred in the Apollo spacecraft and/or upon return to earth. The akageneite (beta-FeOOH) in lunar rocks could be entirely of terrestrial origin as originally suggested by Taylor et al. (1973).

Shock waves in a beta Doradus model

The accumulation of observational evidence and interpretation supports the conclusion that beta Doradus has running shock waves in its atmosphere. It is the work by Hutchinson with its predictions for the phases of the shock waves that prompted this author to construct a numerical hydrodynamical model for the atmosphere of beta Doradus. A short description of the procedure of the calculation follows. The results for the beta Doradus model contain a comparison with the observations. It is of particular interest to verify that the atmosphere contains multiple shock waves as suggested by Hutchinson for the ultraviolet observations.

Influence of finite-beta effects on the lower-hybrid-drift instability in post-implosion theta pinches

The influence of finite values of the plasma parameter beta on the lower-hybrid-drift instability is investigated, with particular emphasis on the post-implosion theta-pinch configurations. The analysis is carried out in a fully self-consistent manner and includes the finite-beta effects associated with transverse electromagnetic perturbations as well as with resonant and nonresonant electron-orbit modifications. Except in the limit where the ratio of electron and ion temperatures approaches zero, it is found that there is a critical value for the local beta such that the lower-hybrid-drift instability is completely stabilized. For typical post-implosion theta pinches, it is concluded that if the magnetic-field depression is sufficiently large, the interior region of the pinch will be stable to the examined instability but the exterior region will be unstable.
