Exploration of alloy surface and slurry modification to improve oxidation life of fused silicide coated niobium alloys

Edge and surface modifications of niobium alloys were investigated prior to coating with Si-20Cr-20Fe and slurry composition modification for performance in a 1370 C ambient pressure slow cycle test. The best coating obtained was Si-20Cr-20Mn with an average life of 63 cycles, compared to 40 for Si-20Cr-20Fe on FS-85 (100 percent improvement in weight parity life). Edge beading extended the lives of Si-20Cr-20Fe-coated Cb-752 and FS-85 to 57 and 41 cycles respectively (50 and 20 percent improvements in weight parity life respectively). W, Al2O3 and ZrO2(CaO) surface modifications altered coating crack frequency and microstructure and increased life somewhat.

Calorimetric studies of 7000 series aluminum alloys. I - Matrix precipitate characterization of 7075. II - Comparison of 7075, 7050, and RX720 alloys

Correlation between differential scanning calorimetry and high temperature transmission electron microscopy for the characterization of preexisting matrix precipitates in the highest-strength and overaged tempers of 7075 aluminum was demonstrated. The solid state reactions undergone by these tempers in the 20-500 C temperature range were elucidated and expressed in terms of thermodynamic and kinetic parameters. The dissolution parameters for each phase are distinguishable and serve as guidelines for a rapid characterization of the matrix microstructure of these alloys.

Two-layer thermal-barrier systems for Ni-Al-Mo alloy and effects of alloy thermal expansion on system life

Cyclic furnace and cyclic natural gas-oxygen torch rig tests were conducted to (1) identify a thermal-barrier system for a nickel-aluminum-molybdenum alloy, (2) study the oxidation of the bond coating, and (3) study the effect of the substrate coefficient of thermal expansion on thermal barrier system life. It is found that the latter is affected by the composition of the bond coating, yttria concentration in zirconia, and the coefficient of thermal expansion of the substrate material. In addition, small compositional changes in the bond and thermal barrier coatings have greater effect on thermal barrier system life than the 40% increase in the coefficient of thermal expansion of the substrate material. No simple relation exists between the weight gain caused by bond-coating oxidation with increasing yttria concentration in zirconia and increasing bond coating thickness on the one hand, and thermal barrier system life on the other.

Mechanical alloying, characterization and consolidation of Ti-Al-Ni alloys

Mechanical alloying is being investigated as a processing route for the production of aluminide intermetallics. This program involves powder production and characterization, consolidation and thermal treatments and determination of microstructure-property relationships. An attritor mill is being used to produce powder in lots up to 1000 grams and the processing parameters are being systematically varied to establish the optimum milling conditions. The mill is being instrumented to generate data related to the processing to provide a basis for theoretical modeling. Powder is being characterized using thermal analysis, optical and electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Particle size distributions and powder density are being determined. Consolidation of the powder is being approached in several different ways including, cold isostatic pressing, sintering, extrusion and hot pressing. The results of the program so far will be presented and future directions discussed.

Comparison of high frequency, high temperature core loss and B-H loop characteristics of an 80 Ni-Fe crystalline alloy and two iron-based amorphous alloys

Limited experimental data exists for the specific core loss and dynamic B-H loops for soft magnetic materials for the combined conditions of high frequency and high temperature. This experimental study investigates the specific core loss and dynamic B-H characteristics of a nickel-iron crystalline magnetic alloy (Supermalloy) and two iron-based amorphous magnetic materials (Metglas 2605S-3A and Metglas 2605SC) over the frequency range of 1-50 kHz and temperature range of 23-300 C under sinusoidal voltage excitation. The effects of maximum magnetic flux density, frequency, and temperature on the specific core loss and on the size and shape of the B-H loops are examined. The Supermalloy and Metglass 2605S-3A and 2605SC data are used to compare the core loss of transformers with identical kVA and voltage ratings.

Corrosion Studies of 2195 Al-Li Alloy and 2219 Al Alloy with Differing Surface Treatments

Corrosion studies of 2195 Al-Li and 2219 Al alloys have been conducted using the scanning reference electrode technique (SRET) and the polarization resistance (PR) technique. The SRET was used to study corrosion mechanisms, while corrosion rate measurements were studied with the PR technique. Plates of Al203 blasted, soda blasted and conversion coated 2219 Al were coated with Deft primer and the corrosion rates studied with the EIS technique. Results from all of these studies are presented.

Summary of Alloy 617 and Alloy 709 Elevated Temperature Crack Growth Test Results from the Planned FY24 Crack Growth Test Activities

This report covers the results from crack growth rate testing performed at Idaho National Laboratory in the fiscal year 2024. It includes two creep crack growth rate tests and two creep-fatigue crack growth rate tests. Results are shown for each of these tests, included crack growth measured during the test using direct current potential drop, and measurements based off of the fracture surface. Load line displacement, as well as load, were also collected during the tests. Detailed analysis of the results will continue into the next fiscal year, however, a number of potential improvements to the equipment and testing procedures were identified that will increase testing reliability and throughput, as well as decrease complications with the analysis.
