Absorbing boundary conditions in material point method adopting perfectly matched layer theory

This study focuses on solving the numerical challenges of imposing absorbing boundary conditions for dynamic simulations in the material point method (MPM). To attenuate elastic waves leaving the computational domain, the current work integrates the Perfectly Matched Layer (PML) theory into the implicit MPM framework. The proposed approach introduces absorbing particles surrounding the computational domain that efficiently absorb outgoing waves and reduce reflections, allowing for accurate modeling of wave propagation and its further impact on geotechnical slope stability analysis. The study also includes several benchmark tests to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method, such as several types of impulse loading and symmetric and asymmetric base shaking. The conducted numerical tests also demonstrate the ability to handle large deformation problems, including the failure of elasto-plastic soils under gravity and dynamic excitations. The findings extend the capability of MPM in simulating continuous analysis of earthquake-induced landslides, from shaking to failure.

R&D Adoption and Progress in Full Simulation of the CMS experiment

In this work we report on evolution of usage of Geant4 within CMSSW and adaptation of the newest Geant4 11.2.1, which is expected to be used for CMS simulation production in 2025. Physics validation results and results on CPU performance are reported. For the Phase-2 simulation several R&D are carried out. A significant update for CMS geometry description is performed. Different aspects of geometry description and physics simulation for the new detectors will be discussed. Progress on R&D efforts for the Phase-2 simulation will be presented, which includes reports on experience of application of G4HepEm external library.

National Fire Protection Association Spurs the Safe Adoption of EVs Through Education and Outreach

As electric vehicles (EV) and their charging infrastructure steadily increase in popularity across the U.S., growing pains still exist, impeding their true potential for growth. The barriers include a general lack of knowledge around EV systems, range anxiety, electrical workplace safety practices, code compliance and inspection for charging stations, maintenance garages and workers, insurance concerns, and the potential risks associated with damaged lithium-ion batteries (fires, re-ignition, water immersion, and stranded energy).NFPA partnered with SMEs, training development organizations, and Clean City Coalitions to create a series of common online trainings for each EV ecosystem sector, educating communities on the realities of EV proliferation, myths, facts, statistics, codes, and basic information for each sector to become versed in EV knowledge. We also constructed a workshop program for the many EV stakeholders who should be involved in setting up a strategic, cohesive outlook for the participating towns and cities.

Adopting Code Verification Methodology Based on Model Form

Code verification is an essential part of credibility analysis for computational models. It assesses whether the mathematical model is implemented correctly into the code and whether the numerical methods behave consistently, and is done before solution verification and validation. Robust guidance for code verification exists in the literature. However, there is no known, concise guide for selecting the approach based on the model form that also presents an overview of the common elements. This document was written to address this gap as an accessible reference for beginning a code-verification effort.

Adoption of AI in the Utility T&D Sector: Use Cases, Consequence, Assessment and Benefits

Digital transformation and utilization of artificial intelligence (AI) in the electric grid are fundamentally changing the industry’s approach to common problems and enabling a broader paradigm shift in grid planning and operations. The change in approach is circularly both enabling and driving modernization, with load growth and reliable management of data center and AI infrastructure shifting away from planning approaches with relatively predictable behaviors and toward a mix of consumer and industrial choices that surpass human cognitive abilities to process. This movement has potential to condition humans to not understand the system on which the AI depends, while requiring it for development of the necessary infrastructure. Approaches which would address most likely grid conditions and events, such as faults, aging of equipment, and weather, now must also account for large loads which shift not based upon weather or time of day, but the computational load. Quantifying computational load is independent of the traditional grid forecasting variables, where a data center’s aggregate load is determined by user and AI system behavior and decoupled from normal grid planning and operations. AI is both the cause and solution for these challenges, with new grid planning tools integrating massive amounts of decisions into frameworks.

Attempting to Develop the World’s Most Cost-Effective Metal 3D Printing Technology Through Industrial Adoption of a High-Temperature Electro-Magnetic Nozzle for 3D Printing and Computer Numerical Control Integration

This project aimed to make a practical system capable of sustained metal deposition in air engineered with industrial integration and controls. The Al-Ce wire feedstock was tailored with appropriate deposition and solidification properties for direct reactive interface printing (DRIP), and the goal was to integrate onto a Hybrid Manufacturing Technologies system for producing test parts without a controlled environment.

Blueprint: Coordinated Vulnerability Disclosure (CVD) Adoption for Information Sharing and Analysis Center (ISAC)-Like Groups

The electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) industry is an incredibly diverse set of participants (EVSE manufacturers, charge network operators (CNOs), original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), etc.), and with the potential for an Information Sharing and Analysis Centers (ISAC) or ISAC-like group, it requires a series of guidance for doing a multiparty coordinated vulnerability disclosure (CVD) such that a group like this could be successful. This blueprint provides a template and guidance to stakeholders in the EVSE industry for conducting a multiparty CVD. It also formalizes what multiparty CVD could look like in an ISAC-like group with multiple entities as well as vulnerability coordinators by specifically calling out who in the ISAC-like group may be involved, and which industry members it may apply to. This blueprint leverages tools such as Vultron, VINCE, etc. along with open resources such as the Software Engineering Institutes guide for coordinated vulnerability disclosure, for the stakeholder in the EVSE industry to start up a CVD program of their own.

Blueprint: Coordinated Vulnerability Disclosure (CVD) Adaption and Adoption Guide for Industry To Create Their Own CVD Program

This guide provides a series of steps and guidance for electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) industry members to set up their own coordinated vulnerability disclosure (CVD) program by utilizing the Software Engineering Institute/Computer Emergency Response Team (SEI/CERT)’s CVD how-to guide. Due to the complexity of CVD, and with the existing resources out there, this guide is intended that this portion of the blueprint is an extension of the CVD how-to guide, not meant as a replacement. This guide is meant to outline a process for what to do when you discover a vulnerability on EVSE equipment. It is written for developers, vendors and security researchers as well as management. This is not a technical document. It is meant to be accessible for both technical and non-technical roles.

Comments on the effect of adopting new precession and equinox corrections

It is shown that the derived terrestrial longitude zero point and UT1 rate will be different when determined by classical optical and space techniques so long as the precession constant and equinox offset and drift are imperfectly known. For the uncertainty of the new IAU precession constant, this inconsistency is expected to be nearly 0.04 arcsec in longitude and 0.1 ms/yr in UT1 rate. The consistency of constants does not guarantee consistent results. The classical practice of defining Greenwich Mean Sidereal Time (GMST) as invariant with respect to a fixed equinox if the longitude and UT1 results from the inertial techniques are to be stable against changes in the precession constant. One form for GMST is given.
