Metal–bicarbonate ion pairing in alkaline aqueous solutions from multilevel embedded correlated wavefunction theory and molecular dynamics

In this work, we examine ion-pairing mechanisms of bicarbonates in alkaline aqueous solutions with the divalent metal ions most abundantly present in seawater, namely, Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ . We employ a rare-event enhanced sampling approach within first-principles molecular dynamics to explore regions of phase space spanning solvent-shared to contact ion pairs. Second-order Møller–Plesset perturbation theory (MP2) corrections are subsequently applied in an embedding framework (EMB) to refine the electronic structure of stationary states and associated reaction barriers along the free-energy profiles while retaining the extended solvent effects at the density functional theory (DFT) level. Ca 2+ –HCO 3 − was previously hypothesized to exist in a solvent-shared ion pair (SSHIP) by DFT studies with an endergonic contact ion pair (CIP) formation; however, our EMB-MP2 refinement of the DFT ion-pairing pathways reveals that Ca 2+ and HCO 3 − form a virtually barrier-free CIP in alkaline solutions, with even more energetic ease than the widely studied Ca–CO 3 ion pair. We find qualitative agreement between DFT and EMB-MP2 for Mg 2+ —unlike Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ refuses to shed its strong hydration shell, thereby preferring a SSHIP state with a significant activation barrier to crossover to the CIP forms—a trait reminiscent of ion pairing in Mg–CO 3 and closely related to the kinetic limitations underlying the famous subject of the dolomite problem. Our study highlights the importance of improved electronic structure descriptions of liquids, modeled as a condensed phase of matter lacking in long-range crystalline order. It also strongly suggests that Ca 2+ –HCO 3 − CIPs are likely precursors involved in prenucleation of CaCO 3 mineral formation in seawater.

Few is different: deciphering many-body dynamics in mesoscopic quantum gases

Emergent macroscopic descriptions of matter, such as hydrodynamics, are central to our description of complex physical systems across a wide spectrum of energy scales. The conventional understanding of these many-body phenomena has recently been shaken by a number of experimental findings. Collective behavior of matter has been observed in mesoscopic systems, such as high-energy hadron–hadron collisions, or ultracold gases with only a few strongly interacting fermions. In such systems, the separation of scales between macroscopic and microscopic dynamics (at the heart of any effective theory) is inapplicable. To address the conceptual challenges that arise from these observations and explore the universality of emergent descriptions of matter, the EMMI Rapid Reaction Task Force was assembled. This document summarizes the RRTF discussions on recent theoretical and experimental advances in this rapidly developing field. Leveraging technological breakthroughs in the control of quantum systems, we can now quantitatively explore what it means for a system to exhibit behavior beyond the sum of its individual parts. In particular, the report highlights how the (in)applicability of hydrodynamics and other effective theories can be probed across three principal frontiers: the size frontier, the equilibrium frontier, and the interaction frontier.

Underground Test Area Activity Waste Management Plan; and Attachment 1 Fluid Management Plan for the Underground Test Area Activity

The U.S. Department of Energy, National Nuclear Security Administration Nevada Field Office initiated the Underground Test Area Activity to characterize the risk posed to human health and the environment as a result of underground nuclear testing activities at the Nevada National Security Site. The UGTA Activity is now administered by the DOE Environmental Management Nevada Program. This document is a revision to NNSA/NSO (2009). The new document and revision number reflect EM Nevada Program as the current UGTA Activity administrator.

Application of Nuclear Technology to Art Identification Problems: First Annual Report

Throughout the centuries, as man has become increasingly affluent, his interest in antiquities and objects of art, and the price he has been willing to pay for them, has increased. Inevitably, one result has been to attract the unscrupulous to the production and sale of counterfeit paintings, sculptures, and other works of art. The skill of forgers varies but often is highly sophisticated. However, dealers, museum curators, and other experts have also become more skillful in the detection of forgeries. Scientific tools of increasing sensitivity and sophistication have gradually been applied to the examination of the materials of art and archaeology. Such tools frequently support and render more reliable the judgment of the experts. The quality of forgeries may improve further as their makers become acquainted with the new methods of detection and in turn learn to circumvent or confound the methods. Therefore, the development of still more advanced methods of examination has great utility in the art world. This is particularly true if the ultimate effect is to make circumvention of the methods of examination so costly that the economic incentives for producing forgeries may be substantially reduced, if not eliminated.

Solar Training and Education Partnership for Underserved Populations

Solar Landscape’s STEP-UP program provided high quality solar installation training in partnership with community-based organizations (CBOs) in various regions within the U.S. Solar Landscape leveraged internal subject matter experts (SME’s) industry guidance and regional training assessments to provide customized training designed to support the growing solar and broader energy sector. Upon completion of the program, the team assisted trainees and nonprofit partners with connections to Solar Landscape contractors as well as local and National residential solar installation companies to facilitate placement into careers and apprenticeships.

A method for battery activation

A technique to activate nickel cadmium batteries is described. The method shortened the time required for activation, eliminated the temperature rise in the batteries, and produced a voltage on the discharge that was better than when the C/20 was run for 48 hours during tests. Various methods of activation are described and evaluated. Results of alternate conditioning charge schemes are presented along with voltage/temperature characteristics for multiple level nickel cadmium battery chargers.

Medical Aspects of Gemini Extravehicular Activities

The medical aspects of Gemini extravehicular activities are principally concerned with the physiological responses to high workloads, high thermal stresses, and low fatigue tolerance. Analysis of physiological instrumentation data. from extravehicular flights and training operations contributed significantly to the understanding of extra-vehicular workloads and the means of controlling these workloads.
