Very low Ti /VLT/ basalts - A new mare rock type from the Apollo 17 drill core

Phaneritic fragments, vitrophyres, and glass beads of a new very low Ti (VLT) mare basalt are found in the Apollo 17 drill core. VLT lithic fragments are characterized by TiO2 content of approximately 0.5%, Mg/(Mg + Fe) of approximately 0.52, CaO/Al2O3 of approximately 0.9, and low alkali content. Although mineral systematics and modal composition of VLT basalt are similar to Apollo 12 and 15 low Ti basalts, VLT basalts cannot be related to these mare basalts by crystal fractionation. Since VLT basalt is isochemical with some of the less mafic green glasses, fractionation of VLT magma from a liquid of green-glass composition is a possibility. Spectral reflectance studies suggest that VLT-type basalts may be relatively common in mare basins.

On the origin of high-Ti mare basalts

Analyses were conducted of sixteen Apollo 17 mare basalts for alkali, alkaline-earth, and rare-earth elements, Co, and Sc. The obtained data were utilized in a study concerning the nature of the igneous processes responsible for the chemical variations among the high-Ti, low-K basalts. Estimates were obtained regarding the abundances of the large-ion, lithophile elements in the source regions for the basalts. It is shown that the source regions could plausibly have been produced by processes believed to have occurred during the early history of the moon. Attention is given to chemical variations among the Apollo 17 mare basalts, near-surface (low-pressure) crystal fractionation, partial melting, limits on the extent of partial melting, and a summary of possible events leading to formation of high-Ti mare basalts.

Fracture resistance of Ti-5Al-2.5Sn extra-low interstitial castings

Fracture toughness and cyclic crack propagation data for Ti-5Al-2.5Sn extra-low interstitial (ELI) castings, 0.51 and 2.54 cm (0.20 and 1.00 in.) thick, at 394, 294, 77, and 20 K (250, 70, -320, and -423 F), are presented. Both surface flaw and compact tension geometries were tested. Comparison is made with other titanium alloys in both wrought and cast forms. Crack propagation resistance is comparable to wrought Ti-5Al-2.5Sn ELI, even with the extremely coarse as-cast grain size encountered.

L-series satellite spectra in Ti XII and Fe XVI

Transitions in Na-like Ti and Fe ions, which appear as satellites to 2p-3s and 2p-3d transitions in Ne-like ions, were studied. The soft X-ray spectra produced by a focused-laser source and a vacuum-spark device were obtained with the same grazing-incidence spectrograph. Atomic structure calculations agreed with the observed 2p-3s spectral patterns and made possible line identifications in Ti XII and Fe XVI.

Spectra of Fe-Ti silicate glasses - Implications to remote-sensing of planetary surfaces

Optical spectra of synthetic Fe-Ti silicate glasses and the temperature variations of the spectral features were investigated. The spectra are assigned to absorptions due to crystal field (CF) transitions in Ti(3+), Fe(2+) in octahedral coordination, and Fe(2+) in tetrahedral coordination, and to metal-metal and oxygen-metal charge transfer (CT) transitions which contribute to the near ultraviolet absorption edge. Temperature variations of the optical bands have been studied to explore implications for remote sensing. Caution is urged in the use of the absorption edge as a measure of TiO2 concentrations on planetary surfaces and in regolith samples.

Cl, P2O5, U and Br associated with mineral separates from a low and a high Ti mare basalt

Low Ti basalt 12040 and high Ti basalt 75055 have approximately the same Cl/P2O5 ratio; the Cl is that remaining after a hot water leach. Pyroxene, plagioclase and ilmenite minerals separated from the basalts also tend to have this same Cl/P2O5 ratio. This is evidence that these major minerals do not control the ratio since Cl and P would not be expected to partition to the same extent into each mineral. Olivine appears to be a special case. It is proposed that the grains measured contained inclusions with leachable and P2O5-related Cl. Dilute acid leaches of whole rock and separated minerals have the same or nearly the same Cl/P2O5 ratios as the residual samples. Apatite and whitlockite were probably the phases leached. They must be constituents of the mesostasis and are present as microminerals or coatings on major mineral grains. The acid leach results imply little or no partition of Cl and P2O5 into major minerals.

Stress-corrosion crack-growth study of titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V exposed to freon PCA and nitrogen tetroxide MON-1

An experimental fracture mechanics program was performed to determine the stress corrosion crack growth sensitivity of the propellant tank material, titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V, for aerospace satellite applications involving long term exposure to Freon PCA and nitrogen tetroxide MON-1. Sustained load tests were made at a 49 C (120 F) constant temperature using thin gauge tensile test specimens containing semielliptical surface flaws. Test specimen types included parent metal, center of weld, and weld heat affected zone. It was concluded that Ti-6Al-4V alloy is not adversely affected in a stress environment when exposed to Freon PCA for 1000 hours followed by exposure to nitrogen tetroxide MON-1 for 2000 hours at stress levels up to 80% of the experimental critical plane strain stress intensity factor.

Effect of creep in titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V at elevated temperature on aircraft design and flight test

Short-term compressive creep tests were conducted on three titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V coupons at three different stress levels at a temperature of 714 K (825 F). The test data were compared to several creep laws developed from tensile creep tests of available literature. The short-term creep test data did not correlate well with any of the creep laws obtained from available literature. The creep laws themselves did not correlate well with each other. Short-term creep does not appear to be very predictable for titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V. Aircraft events that result in extreme, but short-term temperature and stress excursions for this alloy should be approached cautiously. Extrapolations of test data and creep laws suggest a convergence toward predictability in the longer-term situation.

The effects of Cr, Al, Ti, Mo, W, Ta, and Cb on the cyclic oxidation behavior of cast Ni-base superalloys at 1100 and 1150 C

Fifty Ni-base superalloys with concentrations of Cr, Al, Ti, Mo, W, Ta, and Cb systematically varied between two nonzero levels, were tested for cyclic oxidation resistance at 1100 and 1150 C. Oxidation resistance was interpreted in terms of the rate of specific weight change and the types of oxides formed. It is found that the resistance of the alloys to cyclic oxidation is largely determined by Al content, with a sharp increase in the oxidation resistance observed in the Al concentration range 5-8 at. pct. The effects of the other elements studied were small compared with that of aluminum. Best oxidation resistance characteristics were predicted for high Al (13 at. pct), low Cr (10 at. pct), low Ti (2 at. pct), low Cb (1 at. pct), and high Mo, W, and Ta (3 at. pct each). The effects of the refractory metals, however, are somewhat ambiguous and should be investigated further. Higher boron contents, which were unintentionally varied, were clearly detrimental even for the most resistant compositions.

Selected fretting-wear-resistant coatings for Ti-6 pct Al-4 pct V alloy

The ability of several wear-resistant coatings to reduce fretting in the Ti-6Al-4V alloy is investigated. The experimental apparatus and procedures for evaluating fretting in uncoated Ti-6Al-4V alloy and in the alloy with plasma-sprayed coatings, polymer-bonded coating, and surface treatments are described. The wear volume and wear rate for the alloys are measured and compared. It is concluded that Al2O3 with 13 percent TiO2, preoxidation and nitride surface treatments, and MoS2 sputtering result in wear-resistant surfaces; however, the polyimide coating is the most wear resistant coating in both dry and moist air, and it causes the least wear to the uncoated alloy surface.

Evaluation of Ti-6Al-4V surface treatments for use with a polyphenylquinoxaline adhesive

Three surface treatments for Ti-6Al-4V adherends were evaluated using a thermoplastic polymer monoether polyphenylquinoxaline, MEPPQ, which had been shown in previous studies to have good potential as a high temperature adhesive for aerospace applications. Initial results based on long term thermal exposure at 232 C (450 F) using the phosphate-fluoride (PF) and chromic acid anodized (CAA) treatments with MEPPQ adhesive were not encouraging. A significant improvement in strength retention and a change in failure mode (cohesive) at 232 C (450F) was found for the SHA treated specimens compared to the PF and CAA treatments. Although an improvement in long term thermal durability was obtained with the SHA treatment of Ti-6Al-4V, an improved surface treatment with better long term durability is still required for aerospace applications.

Shot peening for Ti-6Al-4V alloy compressor blades

A text program was conducted to determine the effects of certain shot-peening parameters on the fatigue life of the Ti-6Al-4V alloys as well as the effect of a demarcation line on a test specimen. This demarcation line, caused by an abrupt change from untreated surface to shot-peened surface, was thought to have caused the failure of several blades in a multistage compressor at the NASA Lewis Research Center. The demarcation line had no detrimental effect upon bending fatigue specimens tested at room temperature. Procedures for shot peening Ti-6Al-4V compressor blades are recommended for future applications.

Sodium hydroxide anodization of Ti-Al-4V adherends

The use of sodium hydroxide anodization (SHA) for Ti-6Al-4V adherends is examined. The SHA surface is evaluated using SEM, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Auger electron spectroscopy. The SHA procedures of Kennedy et al. (1983) were employed in this experiment. The photomicrographs of the SHA (sandblasted) and PSHA (sandblasted and pickled) oxide surface reveal that the two surfaces differ. The PSHA is patchy and similar to a chromic acid anodization surface and the porosity of the PSHA is more uniform than the SHA surface. The compositions of the surfaces are studied. It is noted that SHA is an effective pretreatment for Ti-6Al-4V adherends.

O-16 excesses in Murchison and Murray hibonites - A case against a late supernova injection origin of isotopic anomalies in O, Mg, Ca, and Ti

Ion probe measurements of the oxygen isotopic composition of seven hibonite samples from the CM chondrites Murchison and Murray are reported. All samples show large O-16 excesses relative to terrestrial oxygen. The data for all samples plot along the carbonaceous chondrite O-16-rich mixing line and show no evidence for isotopic mass fractionation effects characteristic of FUN inclusions. These hibonites have the largest Ca-48 and Ti-50 isotopic anomalies found to date; thus there is no intrinsic relationship between anomalies of a nucleosynthetic origin and isotopic mass fractionation effects. The large O-16 excess seen in the sample with the largest measured Ca-48 and Ti-50 depletions argues against a late injection of exotic material from a nearby supernova as a source for the isotopic anomalies.

Ti:LiNbO3 components for a fiber gyroscope

It is maintained that integrated optics will play a major role in the next generation of fiber gyros since the potential exists for mass producing low-cost integrated gyro front-end circuits. Ti:LiNbO3 wave guide technology has been used to demonstrate all the necessary components. The combined use of the 3dB splitter and polarizer functions in a 3 x 3 directional coupler is considered. Such a device was designed for operation at lambda = 1.3 microns and fabricated with 6.5-micron Ti strip widths, and a 1050 C/6 hr diffusion.

Characteristics and kinetics of laser-pumped Ti:sapphire oscillators

The experimental performance of a gain-switched Ti:sapphire laser oscillator pumped by a frequency-doubled Q-switched Nd:YAG laser system is presented for a variety of operating conditions. A theoretical model developed for this oscillator predicts well its performance. The observed curved input-output energy plots for the oscillator result from the kinetics of gain switching and fluorescence decay during the gain buildup period. Fluorescence decay also produces observed oscillator thresholds higher than those normally predicted by the standard gain-equals-loss condition. Gain-switched parasitic modes, with a higher threshold but shorter round-trip time than the resonator mode, cause the resonator mode to oscillate only over a finite range of pump energies. Spectroscopic investigations show that the Ti:sapphire cross-section spectrum is well fit by a Poisson distribution, giving a peak cross section of 3 x 10 to the -19th sq cm for the pi polarization.

The surface variation of Ti-14Al-21Nb as a function of temperature under ultrahigh vacuum conditions

The effect of temperature, at conditions of ultrahigh vacuum, on the surface composition of the Ti-14Al-21Nb (in wt pct) alloy was investigated in samples heated to 1000 C in 100 C increments. Results of AES spectroscopy revealed that the Ti-14Al-21Nb alloy surface is extremely sensitive to temperature. At 300 C, the carbon and oxygen began to rapidly dissolve into the alloy, and at 600 C, bulk S segregated to the surface. The variation in the surface composition was extensive and different over the temperature range studied, indicating that there may be substantial changes in the hydrogen transport.
