Breaking electron pairs in the pseudogap regime of SmTiO 3 − SrTiO 3 − SmTiO 3 quantum wells

The strongly correlated two-dimensional electron liquid within SmTiO 3 /SrTiO 3 /SmTiO 3 quantum well structures exhibits a pseudogap phase when the quantum well width is sufficiently narrow. Using low-temperature transport and optical experiments that drive the quantum-well system out of equilibrium, we find evidence of mobile, long-lived, negatively charged quasiparticles, consistent with the idea that the pseudogap phase arises from strongly bound electron pairs. As a result, these experimental results establish a connection between quantum confinement and enhanced electron pairing, which may provide a pathway to higher-temperature superconductors.

Noncoplanar magnetic order in the breathing kagome lattice compound Pb⁡(OF)⁢Cu 3 ⁢(SeO 3 ) 2⁢ (NO 3 )

We report a comprehensive study investigating the magnetic ordering properties of the quasi-two-dimensional breathing kagome lattice compound Pb⁡(OF)⁢Cu 3 ⁢(SeO 3 ) 2 ⁢(NO 3 ) using neutron diffraction and thermodynamic measurements. A long-range magnetic order emerges below the Néel temperature, T N = 18K, characterized by a propagating vector k = (0,0,1.5). Refinement analysis reveals that the copper moments display a noncoplanar arrangement, with the c components parallelly aligned within the breathing kagome plane and antiparallelly aligned between the layers. In-plane moment components form a chiral “tail-chase” structure. The magnetic order is quickly suppressed under moderate external fields applied both within and perpendicular to the kagome plane. Potential magnetic interactions that may be associated with the noncoplanar chiral magnetic structure are discussed.

Relative phase stability of L1 2 and DO 22 /DO 23 structures in Al 3 Nb, Al 3 Zr and Al 3 V compounds

The relative stability of the different tri-aluminide (Al 3 M) phases in three binary systems (M = Zr, Nb and V) was assessed for their potential to form fine cubic L1 2 precipitates in additively manufactured alloys. Supersaturated thin films of Al-(8–30) at% M were sputtered and heat treated during in-situ x-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements to observe the temperature ranges of stability for each phase. As-sputtered films were then processed with laser tracks simulating additive manufacturing solidification conditions, and the formation of phases in the laser tracks was correlated with density functional theory (DFT) and nucleation rate calculations. We found that the metastable L1 2 structure is highly competitive with the stable DO 23 structure in the Al-Zr system, but much less stable than the DO 22 structure in the Al-Nb system, and both the DO 22 and Al 8 V 5 structure in the Al-V system. Furthermore, these experimental results were found to be in good agreement with the DFT and kinetic calculations, as we determined that the metastable L1 2 in Al-Zr only requires a small amount of undercooling to favor its nucleation over the stable DO 23 , suggesting additive manufacturing can be a viable pathway to develop Al-Zr alloys strengthened by a high volume fraction of L1 2 Al 3 Zr phase.

Crystal structure of deracoxib, C 17 H 14 F 3 N 3 O 3 S

The crystal structure of deracoxib has been solved and refined using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data, and optimized using density functional theory techniques. Deracoxib crystallizes in space group Pbca (#61) with a = 9.68338(11), b = 9.50690(5), c = 38.2934(4) Å, V = 3525.25(3) Å 3 , and Z = 8. The molecules stack in layers parallel to the ab-plane. N–H∙∙∙O hydrogen bonds link the molecules along the b-axis, in chains with the graph set C1,1(4), as well as more-complex patterns. N–H∙∙∙N hydrogen bonds link the layers. The powder pattern has been submitted to ICDD for inclusion in the Powder Diffraction File™ (PDF®).

Enhancing Chemical Stability and Suppressing Ion Migration in CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 Perovskite Solar Cells via Direct Backbone Attachment of Polyesters on Grain Boundaries

Organic–inorganic halide perovskites feature excellent optoelectronic properties but poor chemical stability. While passivating perovskite grain boundary (GB) by polymers shows prospects on long-term performance of perovskite solar cells (PSCs), its detailed impact on the ion migration phenomenon, which largely deteriorates the PSC stability, remains less probed. In this work, we introduce a new polar polymer, polycaprolactone (PCL), to passivate GBs of methylammonium lead triiodide (MAPbI 3 ) perovskite with only 1–2 polymer monolayers via direct backbone attachment. The PSCs with passivated MAPbI 3 , using a classic but less stable Spiro-OMeTAD (2,2',7,7'-tetrakis[N,N-di(4-methoxyphenyl)amino]-9,9'-spirobifluorene) hole transport layer (HTL), exhibit improved power conversion efficiencies up to 20.1%, with 90% of the initial PCE being preserved after 400 h ambient storage, and 80% even after 100 h, 85 °C aging. The improved PSC stability indicates critical roles of PCL GB passivation in retarding moisture-induced decomposition and suppressing ion migration within the perovskite. Furthermore, time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry reveals that I– ions can actively migrate into the electrode, HTL, and their interface in nonpassivated PSCs, even without an externally applied electric field, while such migration is significantly mitigated in PCL-passivated PSCs. This effective GB passivation by PCL suggests an important potential of polymer additives toward the development of stable high-performance PSCs.

Formation of 6H-Ba 3 Ce 0.75 Mn 2.25 O 9 during Thermochemical Reduction of 12R-Ba 4 CeMn 3 O 12 : Identification of a Polytype in the Ba(Ce,Mn)O 3 Family

The resurgence of interest in a hydrogen economy and the development of hydrogen-related technologies has initiated numerous research and development efforts aimed at making the generation, storage, and transportation of hydrogen more efficient and affordable. Solar thermochemical hydrogen production (STCH) is a process that potentially exhibits numerous benefits such as high reaction efficiencies, tunable thermodynamics, and continued performance over extended cycling. Although CeO 2 has been the de facto standard STCH material for many years, more recently 12R-Ba 4 CeMn 3 O 12 (BCM) has demonstrated enhanced hydrogen production at intermediate H 2 /H 2 O conditions compared to CeO 2 , making it a contender for large-scale hydrogen production. However, the thermo-reduction stability of 12R-BCM dictates the oxygen partial pressure (pO 2 ) and temperature conditions optimal for cycling. In this study, we identify the formation of a 6H-BCM polytype at high temperature and reducing conditions, experimentally and computationally, as a mechanism and pathway for 12R-BCM decomposition. 12R-BCM was synthesized with high purity and then controllably reduced using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) data is used to identify the formation of a 6H-Ba 3 Ce 0.75 Mn 2.25 O 9 (6H-BCM) polytype that is formed at 1350 degrees C under strongly reducing pO 2 . Density functional theory (DFT) total energy and defect calculations show a window of thermodynamic stability for the 6H-polytype consistent with the XRD results. These data provide the first evidence of the 6H-BCM polytype and could provide a mechanistic explanation for the superior water-splitting behaviors of 12R-BCM.

Water-Accelerated Photooxidation of CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 Perovskite

Optical absorbance is used to study the kinetics of methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI 3 ) thin film degradation in response to combinations of moisture, oxygen, and illumination over a range of temperatures. 105 degradations were conducted over 41 unique environmental conditions. We discover that water acts synergistically with oxygen in a water-accelerated photo-oxidation (WPO) pathway. This pathway is the dominant pathway at 25 °C and is 10, 100, 1000, and >1000 times faster than dry photooxidation (DPO), degradation via hydrate formation, thermal degradation, and blue light degradation, respectively. We find that the rate determining step for DPO is proton abstraction from methylammonium while for WPO it is proton abstraction from water, which occurs at a faster rate and results in water acting as an accelerant for photooxidation of MAPbI 3 . A full kinetic rate equation is derived and fitted to the data to determine activation energies and rate constants.

Electronic structure, magnetic correlations, and superconducting pairing in the reduced Ruddlesden-Popper bilayer La 3 Ni 2 O 6 under pressure: Different role of d 3 z 2 - r 2 orbital compared with La 3 Ni 2 O 7

The recent discovery of superconductivity in bilayer La 3 Ni 2 O 7 (327-LNO) under pressure stimulated much interest in layered nickelates. However, superconductivity was not found in another bilayer nickelate system, La 3 Ni 2 O 6 (326-LNO), even under pressure. To understand the similarities and differences between 326-LNO and 327-LNO, using density functional theory and the random phase approximation (RPA), we systematically investigate 326-LNO under pressure. The large crystal-field splitting between the e g orbitals caused by the missing apical oxygen moves the d 3z 2 -r 2 orbital farther away from the Fermi level, implying that the d 3z 2 -r 2 orbital plays a less important role in 326-LNO than in 327-LNO. This also results in a smaller bandwidth for the d x 2 -y 2 orbital and a reduced energy gap for the bonding-antibonding splitting of the d 3z 2 -r 2 orbital in 326-LNO, as compared to 327-LNO. Moreover, the in-plane hybridization between the d x 2 -y 2 and d 3z 2 -r 2 orbitals is found to be small in 326-LNO, while it is much stronger in 327-LNO. Furthermore, the low-spin ferromagnetic state is found to be the likely ground state in 326-LNO under high pressure. The weak interlayer coupling suggests that s ± -wave pairing is unlikely in 326-LNO. The robust in-plane ferromagnetic coupling also suggests that d-wave superconductivity, which is usually caused by antiferromagnetic fluctuations of the d x 2 -y 2 orbital, is also unlikely in 326-LNO. These conclusions are supported by our many-body RPA calculations of the pairing behavior. Additionally, contrasting with the cuprates, for the bilayer cuprate HgBa 2 CaCu 2 O 6 , we find a strong self-doping effect of the d x 2 -y 2 orbital under pressure, with the charge of Cu being reduced by approximately 0.13 electrons from 0 GPa to 25 GPa. In contrast, we do not observe such a change in the electronic density in 326-LNO under pressure, establishing another important difference between the nickelates and the cuprates.

A Hybrid Pathway to Biojet Fuel via 2,3-Butanediol

Production of biomass-derived sustainable alternative jet fuels (SAJF) has been considered as an important approach to decarbonize the aviation industry but still possesses various challenges in technology advancement, particularly in achieving high carbon efficiency. Here we report a hybrid pathway to SAJF from 2,3-butanediol (2,3-BDO), integrating biologically converting biomass to 2,3-BDO with catalytically upgrading of 2,3-BDO to jet-range hydrocarbons. This pathway is demonstrated to have a high carbon recovery to liquid hydrocarbons from corn stover (25–28%) (74–82% of the theoretical maximum efficiency). The catalytic conversion steps involve 2,3-BDO to C3+ olefins, oligomerization, and hydrogenation where the first two steps are the focus of this study. Under optimum reaction conditions (523 K, 115 kPa, 1.0 h-1 weight hourly space velocity), 2,3-BDO conversion and C3+ olefin selectivity are >97% and 94–98% during 40 h time on stream, respectively. To demonstrate the adaptability of this technology with bio-derived 2,3-BDO, we also investigated the impact of water and other organic coproducts (acetoin and acetic acid) inherited from the fermentation broth on the catalyst performance and product selectivities. We have shown that the catalyst can handle a significant amount of water in the liquid feed (40 wt% water/60 wt% 2,3-BDO) and maintain catalyst stability for ~40 h. Acetoin can be converted to similar C3+ olefins as 2,3-BDO with complete conversion of acetoin. Co-feeding 10 wt% acetoin with 2,3-BDO is found to have no impact on 2,3-BDO conversion, C3+ olefin selectivity, and catalyst stability. The utilization of organic coproduct like acetoin can help to improve overall carbon conversion efficiency when using real biomass-derived 2,3-BDO. On the other hand, the presence of 10 wt% acetic acid is shown to drastically inhibit methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) hydrogenation and butene oligomerization as revealed by the increased MEK and butene selectivities, implying the importance of separating organic acids when feeding bio-derived 2,3-BDO. The formed C3–C6 olefins from 2,3-BDO are further oligomerized over Amberlyst-36 catalyst to longer-chain hydrocarbons with >70 wt% jet-range hydrocarbons including predominantly iso-olefins/iso-paraffins. The overall carbon efficiency for the jet-range hydrocarbons is 19–22%, exceeding most of the reported biojet pathways, which makes it a promising approach for SAJF production.

Local Distortions and Metal–Semiconductor–Metal Transition in Quasi-One-Dimensional Nanowire Compounds AV 3 Q 3 O δ (A = K, Rb, Cs and Q = Se, Te)

Metal cluster compounds have garnered renewed interest in the search for novel superconductors and topological semimetals owing to structural instabilities of metal-cluster geometries and broken symmetries. Here we synthesized needle-like crystals of the V-cluster-based quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) materials AV 3 Q 3 O δ (A = K, Rb, Cs, Q= Se, Te) which can also be viewed as being composed of parallel nanowires. We examine how changes in their average and local structure control their electronic properties. All compounds crystallize in the TIFe 3 Te 3 -type structure (P6 3 /m space group) with infinite (V 3 )Q 3 ) - double-walled columnar chains separated by A + cations. Our single-crystal and synchrotron powder diffraction studies indicate oxygen atoms partially occupy the center site of the V 6 octahedral metal cluster cages in KV 3 Te 3 O 0.33 , RbV 3 Te 3 O 0.32 , and CsV 3 Te 3 O 0.35 , whereas KV 3 Se 3 is structurally oxygen-free. Our synchrotron X-ray pair distribution function (PDF) analyses indicate that the oxygen-free V 6 cluster octahedra in KV 3 Se 3 are highly distorted perpendicular to the chain direction even at room temperature, reducing the symmetry of the average structure from hexagonal P6 3 /m to monoclinic P2 1 /m. Our theoretical calculation supports this P2 1 /m distortion and suggests the structure further distorts to P2 1 or P2 1 /c at lower temperatures. In contrast, the oxygen-centered V-cluster in KV 3 Te 3 O 0.33 exhibits a V-3-triangle-trimerization along the chain direction. This feature is discernible from the local PDF and is consistent with lattice dynamical calculations based on density functional theory. Resistivity measurements indicate that KV 3 Se 3 exhibits metallic behavior, whereas a dramatic metal-semiconductor-metal transition emerges in KV 3 Te 3 O 6.33 , RbV 3 Te 3 O 0.32 , and CsV 3 Te 3 O 0.35 because of oxygen disorder and changes in local structure captured from our electronic structure analyses of the Fermi surface. Our investigation of the AV 3 Q 3 O 6 family demonstrates the importance of understanding local changes in structure driven by electronic instabilities, which can guide the search for new quantum materials in other low-dimensional cluster-compound materials.

Observation of an Unexpected n -Type Semiconducting Behavior in the New Ternary Zintl Phase Eu 3 InAs 3

The ternary arsenides Eu 3 InAs 3 and Sr 3 InAs 3 have been obtained by reactions of the elements in In flux at 1373 K. Structure elucidation by single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that Eu 3 InAs 3 and Sr 3 InAs 3 adopt the same orthorhombic structure (space group Pnma, Z = 4, Ca 3 AlAs 3 structure type) with unit cell parameters a = 12.9179(9) Å, b = 4.3990(3) Å, c = 13.9337(10) Å and a = 13.0218(11) Å, b = 4.4364(4) Å, c = 14.1339(12) Å, respectively. The structure consists of linear chains of corner-sharing InAs4 tetrahedra, [InAs 2 As 2/2 ] 6– , and Eu 2+ /Sr 2+ cations. Therefore, both Eu 3 InAs 3 and Sr 3 InAs 3 are valence-precise Zintl phases. As expected from the closed-shell electronic configurations, semiconducting behavior is confirmed by resistivity measurements on single crystals for both and by electronic band structure calculations for Sr 3 InAs 3 . The temperature dependence of resistivity and the computational work are in agreement that Eu 3 InAs 3 and Sr 3 InAs 3 are intrinsic semiconductors with narrow band gaps. Thermopower measurement on single-crystalline samples of Eu 3 InAs 3 shows that in the whole measured temperature range, from 300 to 700 K, the values for the Seebeck coefficient are negative. The observation of a negative Seebeck coefficient with very large absolute value (>400–500 μV K –1 at 700 K) is unexpected among the Zintl phases and suggestive that electrons are the majority charge carriers. Such a rare, n-type charge transport in an undoped compound such as Eu 3 InAs 3 , a material that has not been purposely optimized, could indicate native “defect” chemistry, and not extrinsic doping, as a reason for the unusual behavior. Here, a possible explanation involves a mixed-valent Eu 2+ /Eu 3+ state, which might be inferred from the measured effective paramagnetic moment of 7.2 μB per Eu atom, which is lower than the theoretically predicted value for free-ion moment of 7.9 μ B /Eu.

Kinetic Model for the Reduction of Cu II Sites by NO + NH 3 and Reoxidation of NH 3 -Solvated Cu I Sites by O 2 and NO in Cu-SSZ-13

In this work, a kinetic model is developed for the reduction of Cu II sites by NO + NH 3 and the reoxidation of NH 3 -solvated Cu I sites by O 2 and NO in Cu-SSZ-13. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and spatially resolved capillary inlet mass spectrometry (SpaciMS) measurements during transient reactor experiments are utilized to identify the rate parameters associated with NO + NH 3 RHC (reduction half-cycle), proposed to occur via two distinct pathways involving adsorbed NH 3 and gas-phase NH 3 . The resulting NO + NH 3 RHC model is validated using spatiotemporal N 2 measurements covering a wide range of temperatures (200–450 °C) and space velocities (53,000–640,000 h –1 ). N 2 O formation is observed and modeled during NO + NH 3 RHC, with quantitative validation under standard selective catalytic reduction (SCR) conditions. Experimentally measured enthalpic and entropic changes associated with O 2 adsorption on NH 3 -solvated Cu I (ZCu(NH 3 ) 2 ) complexes [ Kamasamudram, K. Catal. Today 2010 , 151 (3–4), 212-222], along with activation energies estimated computationally for the intercage diffusion of ZCu(NH 3 ) 2 complexes [ Paolucci, C. Science 2017 , 357 (6 354), 898-903], are incorporated into a mean field kinetic model for the low-temperature oxidation half-cycle (OHC). Significant NH 3 release is observed during the isothermal oxidation of Cu I sites, attributed to desorption of NH 3 ligands from NH 3 -solvated Cu II dimers (Z 2 Cu 2 (NH 3 ) 4 O 2 ). Reduction of these dimeric complexes leads to the consumption of one NO/Cu II , contradicting the expected reduction stoichiometry. Inclusion of a global Arrhenius rate for the NO titration of Z 2 Cu 2 (NH 3 ) 4 O 2 complexes provides accurate representations of standard SCR on reduced and oxidized catalysts, predicting transient NO and NH 3 consumption between 150 and 250 °C as a function of hydrothermal aging. Deactivation of low-temperature standard SCR by NH 3 is observed at high NH 3 pressures, modeled via the formation of superoxo amino (ZCu(NH 3 ) 3 OO*) complexes during NH 3 titration of Z 2 Cu 2 (NH 3 ) 4 O 2 complexes [ Negri, C. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2020 , 142 (37), 15884-15896]. The redox kinetic model presented here provides a foundational description of active site redox during low-temperature standard SCR, combining the recent kinetic, spectroscopic, and computational findings on the mechanism of standard SCR over Cu-SSZ-13.

Probing electronic and dielectric properties of ultrathin Ga 2 O 3 /Al 2 O 3 atomic layer stacks made with in vacuo atomic layer deposition

Ultrathin (1–4 nm) films of wide-bandgap semiconductors are important to many applications in microelectronics, and the film properties can be sensitively affected by defects especially at the substrate/film interface. Motivated by this, an in vacuo atomic layer deposition (ALD) was developed for the synthesis of ultrathin films of Ga 2 O 3 /Al 2 O 3 atomic layer stacks (ALSs) on Al electrodes. It is found that the Ga 2 O 3 /Al 2 O 3 ALS can form an interface with the Al electrode with negligible interfacial defects under the optimal ALD condition whether the starting atomic layer is Ga 2 O 3 or Al 2 O 3 . Such an interface is the key to achieving an optimal and tunable electronic structure and dielectric properties in Ga 2 O 3 /Al 2 O 3 ALS ultrathin films. In situ scanning tunneling spectroscopy confirms that the electronic structure of Ga 2 O 3 /Al 2 O 3 ALS can have tunable bandgaps (E g ) between ~2.0 eV for 100% Ga 2 O 3 and ~3.4 eV for 100% Al 2 O 3 . With variable ratios of Ga:Al, the measured E g exhibits significant non-linearity, agreeing with the density functional theory simulation, and tunable carrier concentration. Furthermore, the dielectric constant of ultrathin Ga 2 O 3 /Al 2 O 3 ALS capacitors is tunable through the variation in the ratio of the constituent Ga 2 O 3 and Al 2 O 3 atomic layer numbers from 9.83 for 100% Ga 2 O 3 to 8.28 for 100% Al 2 O 3 . The high ε leads to excellent effective oxide thickness ~1.7–2.1 nm for the ultrathin Ga 2 O 3 /Al 2 O 3 ALS, which is comparable to that of high-K dielectric materials.

New procedure for evaluation of U(3) coupling and recoupling coefficients

A simple method to calculate Wigner coupling coefficients and Racah recoupling coefficients for U(3) in two group–subgroup chains is presented. While the canonical U(3) coupling and recoupling coefficients are applicable to any system that respects U(3) symmetry, the U(3) coupling coefficients are more specific to nuclear structure studies. This new procedure precludes the use of binomial coefficients and alternating sums which were used in the 1973 formulation of Draayer and Akiyama, and in so doing provides a faster and more accurate determination of any and all required results. The resolution of the outer multiplicity is based on the null space concept of the U(3) generators proposed by Alex et al., whereas the inner multiplicity in the angular momentum subgroup chain is obtained from the dimension of the null space of the SO(3) raising operator. It is anticipated that a C++ library will ultimately be available for determining generic coupling and recoupling coefficients associated with both the canonical and the physical group–subgroup chains of U(3).

Production and Catalytic Upgrading of 2,3-Butanediol Fermentation Broth into Sustainable Aviation Fuel Blendstock and Fuel Properties Measurement

With the increasing demand for sustainable supplies of aviation fuel and need to address climate change, new conversion technologies are needed to efficiently process biomass, produce high quality jet fuel blendstock, and meet carbon emission targets. This study demonstrates the synthesis, conditioning, and catalytic upgrading of 2,3-butanediol (BDO) fermentation broth into a jet fuel blendstock candidate. A high-titer 2,3-BDO fermentation broth (i.e., ~90 g/L) was produced at a 100-L scale and pretreated via nanofiltration to decrease the impurities level in the broth from 4.6 to 0.6 wt%. A novel process for catalytic upgrading of aqueous 2,3-BDO into a jet fuel blendstock candidate was developed, and each step was efficiently demonstrated. The catalytic steps include 1) 2,3-BDO dehydration into methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) over AlPO4, 2) MEK conversion into olefins over Zn1Zr10Ox, 3) oligomerization of olefins over a zeolite beta, and 4) hydrogenation over platinum/carbon. Both the model feed and real 2,3-BDO fermentation broth were tested for upgrading 2,3-BDO to MEK. With the real feed, a continuous loss of conversion (i.e., >50% loss over ~140 h time-on-stream [TOS]) was partly attributed to reversible deactivation from coking species. However, the conversion remained stable with the model feed, which demonstrates the efficiency of the first step for converting aqueous 2,3-BDO (10 wt% in water). For upgrading MEK to olefins, high selectivity to olefins (i.e., 82.5%) was obtained at high conversion levels (i.e., 93-98%) with stable conditions being achieved for > 70-hours TOS. Oligomerization of light olefins, which was demonstrated for > 270 h TOS, mainly led to the formation of dimers (C8-10) and trimers (C13-14). The oligomerized product was hydrogenated and distilled to recover the jet fraction (35 mass% or 40.9% carbon based yield), which consists mostly of desired isoalkanes (31.7 wt%), n-alkanes (24.5 wt%), and cycloalkanes (29.6 wt%). While some improvement is still needed to meet ASTM D7566 specifications for viscosity and final boiling point temperature, freezing point, density, aromatics content, and sulfur content of the jet blendstock candidate were within acceptable ranges, thus highlighting the potential of this process for production of jet fuel blendstock.

Thermal Conductivity of β-Phase Ga 2 O 3 and (Al x Ga 1– x ) 2 O 3 Heteroepitaxial Thin Films

Heteroepitaxy of β-phase gallium oxide (β-Ga 2 O 3 ) thin films on foreign substrates shows promise for the development of next-generation deep ultraviolet solar blind photodetectors and power electronic devices. In this work, the influences of the film thickness and crystallinity on the thermal conductivity of ($\bar{2}01$)-oriented β-Ga 2 O 3 heteroepitaxial thin films were investigated. Unintentionally doped β-Ga 2 O 3 thin films were grown on c-plane sapphire substrates with off-axis angles of 0° and 6° toward $\langle$$11\bar{2}0$$\rangle$ via metal–organic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE) and low-pressure chemical vapor deposition. The surface morphology and crystal quality of the β-Ga 2 O 3 thin films were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Raman spectroscopy. The thermal conductivities of the β-Ga 2 O 3 films were measured via time-domain thermoreflectance. The interface quality was studied using scanning transmission electron microscopy. The measured thermal conductivities of the submicron-thick β-Ga 2 O 3 thin films were relatively low as compared to the intrinsic bulk value. The measured thin film thermal conductivities were compared with the Debye–Callaway model incorporating phononic parameters derived from first-principles calculations. The comparison suggests that the reduction in the thin film thermal conductivity can be partially attributed to the enhanced phonon-boundary scattering when the film thickness decreases. They were found to be a strong function of not only the layer thickness but also the film quality, resulting from growth on substrates with different offcut angles. Growth of β-Ga 2 O 3 films on 6° offcut sapphire substrates was found to result in higher crystallinity and thermal conductivity than films grown on on-axis c-plane sapphire. However, the β-Ga 2 O 3 films grown on 6° offcut sapphire exhibit a lower thermal boundary conductance at the β-Ga 2 O 3 /sapphire heterointerface. In addition, the thermal conductivity of MOVPE-grown ($\bar{2}01$)-oriented β-(Al x Ga 1–x ) 2 O 3 thin films with Al compositions ranging from 2% to 43% was characterized. Because of phonon-alloy disorder scattering, the β-(Al x Ga 1–x ) 2 O 3 films exhibit lower thermal conductivities (2.8–4.7 W/m∙K) than the β-Ga 2 O 3 thin films. The dominance of the alloy disorder scattering in β-(Al x Ga 1–x ) 2 O 3 is further evidenced by the weak temperature dependence of the thermal conductivity. This work provides fundamental insight into the physical interactions that govern phonon transport within heteroepitaxially grown β-phase Ga 2 O 3 and (Al x Ga 1–x ) 2 O 3 thin films and lays the groundwork for the thermal modeling and design of β-Ga 2 O 3 electronic and optoelectronic devices.

How do drought and heat affect the response of soybean seed yield to elevated O 3 ? An analysis of 15 seasons of free–air O 3 concentration enrichment studies

The coincidence of rising ozone concentrations ([O 3 ]), increasing global temperatures, and drought episodes is expected to become more intense and frequent in the future. A better understanding of the responses of crop yield to elevated [O 3 ] under different levels of drought and high temperature stress is, therefore, critical for projecting future food production potential. Using a 15-year open-air field experiment in central Illinois, we assessed the impacts of elevated [O 3 ] coupled with variation in growing season temperature and water availability on soybean seed yield. Thirteen soybean cultivars were exposed to a wide range of season-long elevated [O 3 ] in the field using free-air O 3 concentration enrichment. Elevated [O3] treatments reduced soybean seed yield from as little as 5.3% in 2005 to 35.2% in 2010. Although cultivars differed in yield response to elevated [O 3 ] (R), ranging from 17.5% to –76.4%, there was a significant negative correlation between R and O 3 dosage. Soybean cultivars showed greater seed yield losses to elevated [O 3 ] when grown at drier or hotter conditions compared to wetter or cooler years, because the hotter and drier conditions were associated with greater O 3 treatment. However, year-to-year variation in weather conditions did not influence the sensitivity of soybean seed yield to a given increase in [O 3 ]. Collectively, this study quantitatively demonstrates that, although drought conditions or warmer temperatures led to greater O 3 treatment concentrations and O 3 -induced seed yield reduction, drought and temperature stress did not alter soybean's sensitivity to O 3 . Our results have important implications for modeling the effects of rising O 3 pollution on crops and suggest that altering irrigation practices to mitigate O 3 stress may not be effective in reducing crop sensitivity to O 3 .
