Mesoscale interplay between phonons and crystal electric field excitations in quantum spin liquid candidate CsYbSe 2

In this report CsYbSe 2 , a recently identified quantum spin liquid (QSL) candidate, exhibits strong crystal electric field (CEF) excitations. Here, we identify phonon and CEF modes with Raman spectroscopy and observe strong CEF-phonon coupling resulting in a vibronic bound state. Complex, mesoscale interplay between phonon modes and CEF modes is observed in real space. Additionally, an unexpected resonant Raman excitation condition is satisfied, yielding up to third-order combination modes, with a total of 17 modes identified in the spectra. This study paves the way to coherent control of possible QSL ground states with optically accessible CEF-phonon manifolds and mesoscale engineering of CEF-phonon interactions.

Pressure tuning of Kitaev spin liquid candidate Na$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$goo

The search for Kitaev's quantum spin liquid (KQSL) state in real materials has recently expanded with the prediction that honeycomb lattices of divalent, high-spin cobalt ions could host the dominant bond-dependent exchange interactions required to stabilize the elusive entangled quantum state. The layered honeycomb Na$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$ has been singled out as a leading candidate provided that the trigonal crystal field acting on Co $3d$ orbitals, which enhances non-Kitaev exchange interactions between $J_{\rm eff}=\frac{1}{2}$ spin-orbital pseudospins, is reduced. We find that applied pressure leads to anisotropic compression of the layered structure, significantly reducing the trigonal distortion of CoO$_6$ octahedra. A strong enhancement of ferromagnetic correlations between pseudospins is observed in the spin-polarized (3 Tesla) phase up to about 60 GPa. Higher pressures drive a spin transition into a low-spin state destroying the $J_{\rm eff}=\frac{1}{2}$ local moments required to map the spin Hamiltonian into Kitaev's model. The spin transition strongly suppresses the low-temperature magnetic susceptibility and appears to stabilize a paramagnetic phase driven by frustration. Although applied pressure fails to realize a KQSL state, the possible emergence of frustrated magnetism of localized, low-spin $S=\frac{1}{2}$ moments opens the door for exploration of novel magnetic quantum states in compressed honeycomb lattices of divalent cobaltates.

Nature of quantum spin liquids of the S = 1 2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the triangular lattice: A parallel DMRG study

Here we study the ground-state properties of the quantum spin liquid (QSL) phases of the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice with nearest- (J 1 ), next-nearest- (J 2 ), and third-neighbor (J 3 ) interactions by using density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method. By combining parallel DMRG with SU(2) spin rotational symmetry, we are able to obtain accurate results on large cylinders with length up to L x =48 and circumference L y =6–12. Our results suggest that the QSL phase of the J 1 -J 2 Heisenberg model is gapped which is characterized by the absence of gapless mode, short-range spin-spin and dimer-dimer correlations. In the presence of J 3 interaction, we find that a new critical QSL with a single gapless mode emerges. While both spin-spin and scalar chiral-chiral correlations are short-ranged, dimer-dimer correlations are quasi-long-ranged which decays as a power-law at long distances.

Pressure-induced tuning of the triangular-honeycomb structure of ferroelectric quantum spin liquid candidate, TbInO 3

The pressure response of the triangular-honeycomb-structured quantum spin liquid candidate, TbInO 3 , has been determined via neutron powder diffraction up to 5.75(5) GPa. The system retains hexagonal symmetry up to the maximum pressure considered. The structure was found to compress less anisotropically than related compounds, though it is more compressible within the 2D plane than between subsequent layers. Through extracting the O-atom coordinates we find experimental evidence that may suggest the enhancement of ferroelectricity at pressures as low as 3 GPa.

Thermal Probes of Phonon-Coupled Kitaev Spin Liquids: From Accurate Extraction of Quantized Edge Transport to Anyon Interferometry

Recent theoretical studies inspired by experiments on the Kitaev magnet α-RuCl 3 highlight the nontrivial impact of phonons on the thermal Hall conductivity of chiral topological phases. Here, we introduce mixed mesoscopic-macroscopic devices that allow refined thermal-transport probes of non-Abelian spin liquids with Ising topological order. These devices feature a quantum-coherent region with quantized or negligible phonon conductance, flanked by macroscopic lobes that facilitate efficient thermalization between chiral Majorana edge modes and bulk phonons. We show that our devices enable (i) accurate determination of the quantized thermal Hall conductivity, (ii) identification of non-Abelian Ising anyons via the temperature dependence of the thermal conductance, and, most interestingly, (iii) single-anyon detection through heat-based anyon interferometry. Analogous results apply broadly to phonon-coupled chiral topological orders.

Short-range spin freezing in the double trillium lattice spin-liquid candidate KSrFe 2 ⁢(PO 4 ) 3 revealed via 31 P NMR

A comprehensive 31 P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) study, combined with thermodynamic measurements and first-principles band-structure calculations, has been conducted to explore the ground state of the 𝑆=5/2 double trillium lattice antiferromagnet KSrFe 2 ⁢(PO 4 ) 3 . Our experimental results indicate that the magnetic ground state is neither a conventional three-dimensional (3D) long-range order (LRO) nor a pure gapless spin-liquid state, as conjectured previously [Boya et al., APL Mater. 10, 101103 (2022)]. Specifically, the observation of a nearly field-independent NMR linewidth below 𝑇* = (3.5 ± 0.4)⁢ K, and a significant enhancement of spin-spin relaxation rate 1/𝑇 2 below 2⁢𝑇* (where 𝑇* is the characteristic temperature identified from the magnetic susceptibility), indicate a complex magnetic ground state where spin freezing coexists with persistent dynamics. Furthermore, we argue that the lack of magnetic LRO and the persistence of strong magnetic fluctuations in KSrFe 2 ⁢(PO 4 ) 3 are unlikely to originate from intersite K/Sr disorder, rather they arise due to intrinsic magnetic frustration. In conclusion, our findings position KSrFe 2 ⁢(PO 4 ) 3 into a broader family of geometrically frustrated magnets characterized by coexisting spin freezing and pronounced antiferromagnetic fluctuations, marking it as a promising platform for investigating exotic phenomena in 3D frustrated magnets.

Charge disproportionation in the spin-liquid candidate κ – ( ET ) 2 Cu 2 ( CN ) 3 at 6 K revealed by Cu 63 NQR measurements

The spin-liquid candidate κ – ( ET ) 2 Cu 2 ( CN ) 3 [ET: bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene] does not exhibit magnetic ordering down to a very low temperature, but shows a mysterious anomaly at 6 K. The origin of the so-called 6-K anomaly is still under debate. We carried out nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements on the copper sites of the insulating layers, which are sensitive to the charge dynamics unlike conventional spin- 1 / 2 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The main finding of this Rapid Communication is that the observation of a sharp peak behavior in the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate T 1 – 1 of Cu 63 NQR at 6 K while T 1 – 1 of both C 13 and H 1 NMR show no clear anomaly. This behavior can be understood as a second-order phase transition related to charge disproportionation in the ET layers.

Precursor of pair-density wave in doping Kitaev spin liquid on the honeycomb lattice

Abstract We study the effects of doping the Kitaev model on the honeycomb lattice where the spins interact via the bond-directional interaction J K , which is known to have a quantum spin liquid as its exact ground state. The effect of hole doping is studied within the t - J K model on a three-leg cylinder using density-matrix renormalization group. Upon light doping, we find that the ground state of the system has a dominant quasi-long-range charge-density-wave correlations but short-range single-particle correlations. In the pairing channel, the even-parity superconducting correlation is dominant with d -wave-like symmetry, which oscillates in sign as a function of separation with a period equal to that of the spin-density wave and two times the charge-density wave. Although these correlations fall rapidly (possibly exponentially) at long distances, this is never-the-less the example where a pair-density wave is the leading instability in the pairing channel on the honeycomb lattice.

Ground state in proximity to a possible Kitaev spin liquid: The undistorted honeycomb iridate Na x IrO 3 (0.60 ≤ x ≤ 0.80)

Here, we report the results of our study of a recently synthesized honeycomb iridate Na x IrO 3 (0.60 ≤ x ≤ 0.80). Single-crystal Na x IrO 3 adopts a honeycomb lattice noticeably without distortions and stacking disorder inherently existent in its sister compound Na 2 IrO 3 . The oxidation state of the Ir ion is a mixed valence state resulting from a majority Ir 5+ (5d 4 ) ion and a minority Ir 6+ (5d 3 ) ion. Na x IrO 3 is a Mott insulator likely with a predominant pseudospin =1 state. It exhibits an effective moment of 1.1 μB/Ir and a Curie-Weiss temperature of –19 K but with no discernible long-range order above 1 K. The physical behavior below 1 K features two prominent anomalies at T h = 0.9 K and T l = 0.12 K in both the heat capacity and AC magnetic susceptibility. Intermediate between T h and T l lies a pronounced temperature linearity of the heat capacity with a large slope of 77 mJ /mole K 2 , a feature expected for highly correlated metals but not at all for insulators. These results along with a comparison drawn with the honeycomb lattices Na 2 IrO 3 and (Na 0.2 Li 0.8 ) 2 IrO 3 point to an exotic ground state in proximity to a possible Kitaev spin liquid.

Gapped magnetic ground state in quantum spin liquid candidate {kappa}-(BEDT-TTF){sub 2}Cu{sub 2}(CN){sub 3}.

Geometrical frustration, quantum entanglement, and disorder may prevent long-range ordering of localized spins with strong exchange interactions, resulting in an exotic state of matter. kappa-(BEDT-TTF)(2)Cu-2(CN)(3) is considered the prime candidate for this elusive quantum spin liquid state, but its ground-state properties remain puzzling. We present a multifrequency electron spin resonance (ESR) study down to millikelvin temperatures, revealing a rapid drop of the spin susceptibility at 6 kelvin. This opening of a spin gap, accompanied by structural modifications, is consistent with the formation of a valence bond solid ground state. We identify an impurity contribution to the ESR response that becomes dominant when the intrinsic spins form singlets. Probing the electrons directly manifests the pivotal role of defects for the low-energy properties of quantum spin systems without magnetic order.

Constructing Quantum Spin Liquids Using Combinatorial Gauge Symmetry

In this work, we introduce the notion of combinatorial gauge symmetry—a local transformation that includes single spin rotations plus permutations of spins (or swaps of their quantum states)—that preserve the commutation and anticommutation relations among the spins. We show that Hamiltonians with simple two-body interactions contain this symmetry if the coupling matrix is a Hadamard matrix, with the combinatorial gauge symmetry being associated with the automorphism of these matrices with respect to monomial transformations. Armed with this symmetry, we address the physical problem of how to build quantum spin liquids with physically accessible interactions. In addition to its intrinsic physical significance, the problem is also tied to that of how to build topological qubits.

Freezing of a Disorder Induced Spin Liquid with Strong Quantum Fluctuations

We report Sr2CuTe 0.5 W 0.5 O 6 is a square-lattice magnet with superexchange between S =$\frac{1}{2}$Cu 2+ spins mediated by randomly distributed Te and W ions. Here, using sub-K temperature and 20 μeV energy resolution neutron scattering experiments we show that this system transits from a gapless disorder-induced spin liquid to a new quantum state below T f =1.7(1) K, exhibiting a weak frozen moment of $\langle$S$\rangle$/S~0.1 and low energy dynamic susceptibility, χ"(ℏω), linear in energy which is surprising for such a weak freezing in this highly fluctuating quantum regime.

Chiral spin-liquid-like state in pyrochlore iridate thin films

The pyrochlore iridates have become ideal platforms to unravel fascinating correlated and topological phenomena that stem from the intricate interplay among strong spin-orbit coupling, electronic correlations, lattice with geometric frustration, and itinerancy of the 5d electrons. The all-in-all-out antiferromagnetic state, commonly considered as the magnetic ground state, can be dramatically altered in reduced dimensionality, leading to exotic or hidden quantum states inaccessible in bulk. Here, by means of magnetotransport, resonant elastic and inelastic x-ray scattering experiments, we discover an emergent quantum disordered state in (111) Y 2 Ir 2 O 7 thin films (thickness ≤30 nm) persisting down to 5 K, characterized by dispersionless magnetic excitations. The anomalous Hall effect observed below an onset temperature near 125 K corroborates the presence of chiral short-range spin configurations expressed in non-zero scalar spin chirality, breaking the macroscopic time-reversal symmetry. The origin of this chiral state is ascribed to the restoration of magnetic frustration on the pyrochlore lattice in lower dimensionality, where the competing exchange interactions together with enhanced quantum fluctuations suppress any long-range order and trigger spin-liquid-like behavior with degenerate ground-state manifold.

Abelian SU(N) 1 chiral spin liquids on the square lattice

In the physics of the Fractional Quantum Hall (FQH) effect, a zoo of Abelian topological phases can be obtained by varying the magnetic field. Aiming to reach the same phenomenology in spin-like systems, in this work we propose a family of SU(N)-symmetric models in the fundamental representation, on the square lattice with short-range interactions restricted to triangular units, a natural generalization for arbitrary N of an SU(3) model studied previously where time-reversal symmetry is broken explicitly. Guided by the recent discovery of SU(2) 1 and SU(3) 1 chiral spin liquids (CSL) on similar models we search for topological SU(N) 1 CSL in some range of the Hamiltonian parameters via a combination of complementary numerical methods such as exact diagonaliza- tions (ED), infinite density matrix renormalization group (iDMRG) and infinite Projected Entangled Pair State (iPEPS). Extensive ED on small (periodic and open) clusters up to N = 10 and an innovative SU(N)-symmetric version of iDMRG to compute entanglement spectra on (infinitely-long) cylinders in all topological sectors pro- vide unambiguous signatures of the SU(N) 1 character of the chiral liquids. An SU(4)-symmetric chiral PEPS, constructed in a manner similar to its SU(2) and SU(3) analogs, is shown to give a good variational ansatz of the N = 4 ground state, with chiral edge modes originating from the PEPS holographic bulk-edge correspondence. Finally, we discuss the possible observation of such Abelian CSL in ultracold atom setups where the possibility of varying N provides a tuning parameter similar to the magnetic field in the physics of the FQH effect.

SU(4) Chiral Spin Liquid, Exciton Supersolid, and Electric Detection in Moiré Bilayers

We propose a moiré bilayer as a platform where exotic quantum phases can be stabilized and electrically detected. Moiré bilayers consist of two separate moiré superlattice layers coupled through the interlayer Coulomb repulsion. In the small distance limit, an SU(4) spin can be formed by combining layer pseudospin and the real spin. As a concrete example, we study an SU(4) spin model on triangular lattice in the fundamental representation. By tuning a three-site ring exchange term K ~ ( t 3 /U 2 ), we find the SU(4) symmetric crystallized phase and an SU (4) 1 chiral spin liquid at the balanced filling. We also predict two different exciton supersolid phases with interlayer coherence at imbalanced filling under displacement field. Especially, the system can simulate an SU(2) Bose-Einstein condensation by injecting interlayer excitons into the magnetically ordered Mott insulator at the layer polarized limit. Smoking gun evidences of these phases can be obtained by measuring the pseudospin transport in the counterflow channel.

Probing topological spin liquids on a programmable quantum simulator

Synthesizing topological order Topologically ordered matter exhibits long-range quantum entanglement. However, measuring this entanglement in real materials is extremely tricky. Now, two groups take a different approach and turn to synthetic systems to engineer the topological order of the so-called toric code type (see the Perspective by Bartlett). Satzinger et al . used a quantum processor to study the ground state and excitations of the toric code. Semeghini et al . detected signatures of a toric code–type quantum spin liquid in a two-dimensional array of Rydberg atoms held in optical tweezers. —JS

Ultrafast renormalization of the magnetic continuum in the proximal Kitaev quantum spin liquid H 3 LiIr 2 O 6 by tr-RIXS [Invited]

We present the first circularly polarized non-resonant pump time-resolved resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (tr-RIXS) experiment in H 3 LiIr 2 O 6 , an iridium-based Kitaev system. Our calculations and experimental results are consistent with the modification of the low-energy magnetic excitations in H 3 LiIr 2 O 6 only during illumination by the laser pulse. We discuss these results in a cooperative framework between the Floquet engineering of the exchange interactions and the dynamic renormalization of electron-electron correlations. However, the penetration length mismatch between the X-ray probe and laser pump and the intrinsic complexity of Kitaev magnets prevents us from unequivocally extracting towards which ground state H 3 LiIr 2 O 6 is driven. We outline possible solutions to these challenges for light-driven stabilization and observation of the Kitaev quantum spin liquid limit by RIXS.
