Solar cell development for the Power Extension Package

The Power Extension Package (PEP), a 32-kilowatt, flexible-substrate, retrievable solar array system for use on the Space Shuttle, is described. It is noted that solar cell costs will be reduced by increasing cell area and simplifying cell and coverglass fabrication processes and specifications. The tests that have been carried out on the cells are described, among them a unique radiation damage test and a side-by-side comparison of candidate cell types with pre- and post-irradiation airplane calibration of outer space short-circuit current

Low cost AMOS solar cell development

Recent developments at JPL have demonstrated that high conversion efficiencies are found with GaAs metal semiconductor solar cells when a particular heat treatment processing step is used to introduce an interfacial layer between the metal and the semiconductor. The new cell, called AMOS (Antireflection-Coated Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor), has open circuit voltages of 0.68-0.72 volts and efficiencies of 15% under terrestrial sunlight, as compared to values of 0.45-0.48 volts and 10%, respectively, for similar cells without an interfacial layer. Potentially higher efficiencies are feasible as further improvements are made in optimizing the interfacial layer effect and in increasing the blue response of the cells. A thin film AMOS cell is proposed that uses a thin recrystallized germanium (Ge) layer between a low cost metal substrate and the vapor phase epitaxially (VPE)-grown GaAs.

Solar Concentrator Advanced Development Program, Task 1

Solar dynamic power generation has been selected by NASA to provide power for the space station. Solar dynamic concentrator technology has been demonstrated for terrestrial applications but has not been developed for space applications. The object of the Solar Concentrator Advanced Development program is to develop the technology of solar concentrators which would be used on the space station. The first task of this program was to develop conceptual concentrator designs and perform trade-off studies and to develop a materials data base and perform material selection. Three unique concentrator concepts; Truss Hex, Spline Radial Panel and Domed Fresnel, were developed and evaluated against weighted trade criteria. The Truss Hex concept was recommended for the space station. Materials data base development demonstrated that several material systems are capable of withstanding extended periods of atomic oxygen exposure without undesirable performance degradation. Descriptions of the conceptual designs and materials test data are included.

Solar array development for the surface of Mars

JPL's missions to Mars have revealed factors that have an adverse impact on the performance of Mars Surface Solar Arrays. These factors included a spectrum shift toward the red wavelengths, atmospheric scattering and absorption and an accumulation of Mars surface dust on the arrays. All of these factors will reduce the power generated from state of the art triple junction solar cells used by earth orbiting satellites. This paper will report the results of JPL supported work conducted by US solar array manufacturers to increase the performance of solar arrays for future Mars surface missions. JPL awarded four vendors contracts to evaluate methods of improving power generation on the surface of Mars. These four contracts cover the redesign of the existing triple junction solar cell, modifying solar simulator output to match the Mars surface spectrum and techniques to control or remove dust from the surface of the arrays. The methodology and results of this evaluation will be presented in this paper.

High-efficiency silicon solar cells - Development, current issues and future directions

This paper provides a review of material, process, and design considerations that are essential for achieving high-efficiency silicon solar cells. It describes an approach that resulted in 18.0-18.5-percent-efficient cells on low-resistivity float-zone silicon material. It is shown experimentally that a combination of surface passivation and double-layer antireflection coating can provide 2-3 percent (absolute) improvement in cell efficiency provided the material, process and cell design are carefully selected.

High Temperature Solar Cell Development

The majority of satellites and near-earth probes developed to date have used photovoltaic arrays for power generation. If future mission to probe environments close to the sun will be able to use photovoltaic power, solar cells that can function at high temperatures, under high light intensity, and high radiation conditions must be developed. In this paper, we derive the optimum bandgap as a function of the operating temperature.

Development of solar active regions

The birth, growth, and decay of solar active regions are described. The appearance of active regions in different atmospheric layers is examined, and the coronal extension of active regions is considered. The use of Skylab soft X-ray and extreme UV observations for studying the complex loop structure of active regions in the solar corona and the sensitive reactions of the upper atmospheric layers to newly emerging flux is explained. It was found that well developed active regions are much bigger in the corona than in the underlying sunspot groups and plages, and that many of the active regions are connected with others through systems of magnetic field lines, occasionally visible in soft X-rays. These interconnections, which may survive several solar rotations, indicate bigger complexes on the sun than one individual active region.

Investigation of critical surface degradation effects on coatings and solar cells developed in Germany (S1002)

Various coatings developed in the FRG (i.e., second-surface mirrors with interference filters with and without conductive layers, conductive layers on solar-cell covers, and selective absorber coatings) have been qualified by accelerated tests under simulated space environment conditions. Experiments with coatings and solar cells have shown, however, that the thermo-optical behavior can differ considerably when performed on the ground and in space because of the great difficulty in simulating the space environment realistically. The objective of this experiment is to qualify these coatings under realistic space environment conditions. In addition, the experiment will provide design criteria, techniques, and test methods to insure control of the combined space and spacecraft environment effects, such as contamination, electrical conductance, and optical degradation, on the coatings. Data to be measured include the temperature of the samples, the electrical resistance of the conductive layers of the samples, the short circuit current of the solar-cell modules, and the deposition of contaminants on the samples (using quartz crystal microbalances (QCM's)).

Nanostructured Materials Developed for Solar Cells

There has been considerable investigation recently regarding the potential for the use of nanomaterials and nanostructures to increase the efficiency of photovoltaic devices. Efforts at the NASA Glenn Research Center have involved the development and use of quantum dots and carbon nanotubes to enhance inorganic and organic cell efficiencies. Theoretical results have shown that a photovoltaic device with a single intermediate band of states resulting from the introduction of quantum dots offers a potential efficiency of 63.2 percent. A recent publication extended the intermediate band theory to two intermediate bands and calculated a limiting efficiency of 71.7 percent. The enhanced efficiency results from converting photons of energy less than the band gap of the cell by an intermediate band. The intermediate band provides a mechanism for low-energy photons to excite carriers across the energy gap by a two-step process.

Solar flare development during the impulsive phase as deduced from correlated radio and hard X-ray observations

A correlative study of metric type III/V bursts and hard X-ray events during the preflash and the impulsive phases of solar flares is presented. A total of 55 groups of type III bursts were observed with the Nancay radiospectrograph, and 32 of these were associated with hard X-ray bursts detected with instruments on ISEE 3, SMM, or both. X-ray bursts associated with type III or U bursts, and type V continuum emission lasting less than 10 s are relatively small, with peak fluxes at 30 keV of not more than 1 photon/sq cm per sec per keV. X-ray bursts associated with type III bursts and continuum emission lasting longer than 30 s are considerably more intense, with peak fluxes at 30 keV exceeding 1 photon/sq cm per sec per keV and spectra extending to not less than 100 keV. For these latter events, type III emission was observed at 169 MHz with the Nancay radioheliograph from several locations during the preflash phase. At the time of the rapid increase in the hard X-ray flux, a new source appeared at 169 MHz and proceeded to fluctuate in phase with one of the original sources that brightened at the same time. This type of behavior, observed in 13 flares, is interpreted as being caused by the rapid interaction of two or more magnetic structures giving rise to the impulsive phase of the flare.

Solar electric propulsion thrust subsystem development

The Solar Electric Propulsion System developed under this program was designed to demonstrate all the thrust subsystem functions needed on an unmanned planetary vehicle. The demonstration included operation of the basic elements, power matching input and output voltage regulation, three-axis thrust vector control, subsystem automatic control including failure detection and correction capability (using a PDP-11 computer), operation of critical elements in thermal-vacuum-, zero-gravity-type propellant storage, and data outputs from all subsystem elements. The subsystem elements, functions, unique features, and test setup are described. General features and capabilities of the test-support data system are also presented. The test program culminated in a 1500-h computer-controlled, system-functional demonstration. This included simultaneous operation of two thruster/power conditioner sets. The results of this testing phase satisfied all the program goals.

Status of Solar Sail Propulsion Within NASA - Moving Toward Interstellar Travel

NASA is developing solar sail propulsion for two near-term missions and laying the groundwork for their future use in deep space and interstellar precursor missions. Solar sails use sunlight to propel vehicles through space by reflecting solar photons from a large, mirror-like sail made of a lightweight, highly reflective material. This continuous photon pressure provides propellantless thrust, allowing for very high (Delta)V maneuvers on long-duration, deep space exploration. Since reflected light produces thrust, solar sails require no onboard propellant. The Near Earth Asteroid (NEA) Scout mission, managed by MSFC, will use the sail as primary propulsion allowing it to survey and image one or more NEA's of interest for possible future human exploration. Lunar Flashlight, managed by JPL, will search for and map volatiles in permanently shadowed Lunar craters using a solar sail as a gigantic mirror to steer sunlight into the shaded craters. The Lunar Flashlight spacecraft will also use the propulsive solar sail to maneuver into a lunar polar orbit. Both missions use a 6U cubesat architecture, a common an 85 sq m solar sail, and will weigh less than 12 kilograms. Both missions will be launched on the first flight of the Space Launch System in 2018. NEA Scout and Lunar Flashlight will serve as important milestones in the development of solar sail propulsion technology for future, more ambitious missions including the Interstellar Probe - a mission long desired by the space science community which would send a robotic probe beyond the edge of the solar system to a distance of 250 Astronomical Units or more. This paper will summarize the development status of NEA Scout and Lunar Flashlight and describe the next steps required to enable an interstellar solar sail capability.

Development of solar cycle 21 observed in EUV spectrum and atmospheric absorption

The results of AE-C and AE-E satellite observations of solar EUV irradiance and atmospheric absorption at wavelengths from 140 to 1850 A, which reflect unexpectedly large differences between the past solar cycle (20) and the present one (21), are discussed. While observations of the oxygen-dissociating solar UV flux above 1230 A show at most a 10% change between the two periods, the EUV minimum at other wavelengths was found to occur 14 months before the sunspot minimum, with a magnitude considerably greater in cycle 21 than in developing cycle 20. During the period of cycle transition, observed irradiance values did not correlate with conventional activity indices. Measurements of UV attenuation reveal no increase of optical depths around 300 km, indicating no corresponding rises in atmospheric density or temperature. The results are considered to present a major challenge to aeronomical models.

Radiation Exposure Analyses Supporting the Development of Solar Particle Event Shielding Technologies

NASA has plans for long duration missions beyond low Earth orbit (LEO). Outside of LEO, large solar particle events (SPEs), which occur sporadically, can deliver a very large dose in a short amount of time. The relatively low proton energies make SPE shielding practical, and the possibility of the occurrence of a large event drives the need for SPE shielding for all deep space missions. The Advanced Exploration Systems (AES) RadWorks Storm Shelter Team was charged with developing minimal mass SPE storm shelter concepts for missions beyond LEO. The concepts developed included "wearable" shields, shelters that could be deployed at the onset of an event, and augmentations to the crew quarters. The radiation transport codes, human body models, and vehicle geometry tools contained in the On-Line Tool for the Assessment of Radiation In Space (OLTARIS) were used to evaluate the protection provided by each concept within a realistic space habitat and provide the concept designers with shield thickness requirements. Several different SPE models were utilized to examine the dependence of the shield requirements on the event spectrum. This paper describes the radiation analysis methods and the results of these analyses for several of the shielding concepts.
