Dramatic Rebrightening of the Type-changing Stripped-envelope Supernova SN 2023aew

Abstract Multipeaked supernovae with precursors, dramatic light-curve rebrightenings, and spectral transformation are rare, but are being discovered in increasing numbers by modern night-sky transient surveys like the Zwicky Transient Facility. Here, we present the observations and analysis of SN 2023aew, which showed a dramatic increase in brightness following an initial luminous (−17.4 mag) and long (∼100 days) unusual first peak (possibly precursor). SN 2023aew was classified as a Type IIb supernova during the first peak but changed its type to resemble a stripped-envelope supernova (SESN) after the marked rebrightening. We present comparisons of SN 2023aew’s spectral evolution with SESN subtypes and argue that it is similar to SNe Ibc during its main peak. P-Cygni Balmer lines are present during the first peak, but vanish during the second peak’s photospheric phase, before H α resurfaces again during the nebular phase. The nebular lines ([O i ], [Ca ii ], Mg i ], H α ) exhibit a double-peaked structure that hints toward a clumpy or nonspherical ejecta. We analyze the second peak in the light curve of SN 2023aew and find it to be broader than that of normal SESNe as well as requiring a very high 56 Ni mass to power the peak luminosity. We discuss the possible origins of SN 2023aew including an eruption scenario where a part of the envelope is ejected during the first peak and also powers the second peak of the light curve through interaction of the SN with the circumstellar medium.

A flexible linear diffusion acceleration to k-eigenvalue neutron transport with SN discontinuous finite element method

In this paper, we derive a flexible linear diffusion acceleration (LDA) for k-eigenvalue neutron transport discretized with discontinuous finite element method (DFEM) and discrete ordinates(SN). This LDA is based on our two pieces of previous works: the flexible non linear diffusion acceleration (NDA) for DFEM-SN and LDA for k-eigenvalue neutron transport using pre-conditioned Jacobian-free Newton-Krylov with self-adjoint angular flux (SAAF), continuous finite element method(CFEM), and SN. We point out the differences between LDA and NDA for DFEM-SN and the difference between DFEM-SN and SAAF-CFEM-SN for LDA. Numerical tests are presented to compare the convergence behaviour of NDA and LDA. (authors)

Nb 3 Sn Superconducting Cavities by Bronze Routes for Accelerator Stewardship

This project explored the challenges of making Nb 3 Sn superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) cavities by bronze routes. The SRF research community has prioritized Nb 3 Sn for many reasons, including the possibility to operate linacs for stewardship applications in continuous-wave mode with compact cryogenic systems. Existing Nb 3 Sn approaches use a cavity body made of niobium and apply tin to the polished cavity interior, a starting point that contains the main costs of present niobium cavity technology. Further complexity is then added because a high vacuum and temperature >1100 °C must be used to prevent formation of undesirable Nb-Sn phases, de-gas interstitial contaminants, and maintain the high purity of the Nb body. The project sought a more cost-effective solution for the same performance opportunities by exploiting the Cu-Sn-Nb diffusion reactions used to make Nb 3 Sn superconducting wires for magnets, which can be carried out at ~700 °C and are compatible with much cheaper copper cavity bodies. The project also sought understanding of the materials science and factors that affect superconducting properties. The project has impacted SRF cavity technology by demonstrating feasibility of alternative routes that enable compact, high-power electron accelerators for energy, security, environment, medical, and commercial applications.

The structure and migration of twin boundaries in tetragonal β -Sn: An application of machine learning based interatomic potentials

Although atomistic simulations have contributed significantly to our understanding of twin boundary structure and migration in metals and alloys with hexagonal close packed (HCP) crystal structures, few direct atomistic studies of twinning have been conducted for other types of low symmetry materials, in large part due to a lack of reliable interatomic potentials. In this work, we examine twin boundary structure and migration in a tetragonal material, β-Sn, comparing high resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) images of deformation twins in β-Sn to the results of direct atomistic simulations using multiple interatomic potentials. ML-based potentials developed in this work are found to give results consistent with our experimental data, revealing faceted twin boundary structures formed by the nucleation and motion of twinning disconnections. We use bicrystallographic methods in combination with atomistic simulations to analyze the structure, energy and shear coupled migration of observed twin facets in β-Sn. In analogy to Prismatic-Basal (PB/BP) interfaces in HCP metals, we discover low energy asymmetric Prismatic-A-plane (PA/AP) interfaces important to twin growth in β-Sn. Finally, a Moment Tensor Potential (MTP) and Rapid Artificial Neural Network (RANN) interatomic potential suitable for studying twinning and phase transformations in Sn are made publicly available as part of this work.

Enhancing Photostability of Sn-Pb Perovskite Solar Cells by an Alkylammonium Pseudo-Halogen Additive

High-performance tin-lead perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are needed for all-perovskite-tandem solar cells. However, iodide related fast photodegradation severely limits the operational stability of Sn-Pb perovskites despite the demonstrated high efficiency and thermal stability. Herein, this work employs an alkylammonium pseudo-halogen additive to enhance the power conversion efficiency (PCE) and photostability of methylammonium (MA)-free, Sn-Pb PSCs. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the pseudo-halogen tetrafluoroborate (BF 4 - ) has strong binding capacity with metal ions (Sn 2+ /Pb 2+ ) in the Sn-Pb perovskite lattice, which lowers iodine vacancy formation. Upon combining BF 4 - with an octylammonium (OA + ) cation, the PCE of the device with a built-in light-scattering layer is boosted to 23.7%, which represents a new record for Sn-Pb PSCs. The improved efficiency benefits from the suppressed defect density. Under continuous 1 sun illumination, the OABF 4 embodied PSCs show slower generation of interstitial iodides and iodine, which greatly improves the device photostability under open-circuit condition. Moreover, the device based on OABF 4 retains 88% of the initial PCE for 1000 h under the maximum-power-point tracking (MPPT) without cooling.

Liquid metal compatibility of pre-oxidized FeCrAl in flowing Sn

Here, a flowing Sn thermal convection loop (TCL) experiment was conducted in FeCrAlMo (Kanthal alloy APMT) tubing for 1000 h with a peak temperature of 400 °C. Oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) Fe-(10–12)Cr-6Al and APMT specimens were exposed and all were pre-oxidized to form an external alumina scale. Unlike static exposures at 400° and 500 °C where pre-oxidation prevented dissolution, large mass losses were observed in the TCL hot leg after the specimens were cleaned in Li. The observed pitting suggests that localized failure of the pre-formed alumina surface oxide caused significant metal loss. Specimen mass gains were not observed on the cold leg implying that mass transfer did not occur and the small levels of Fe and Cr in the Sn after the experiment implies that Sn-rich phases may have formed. Post exposure room temperature tensile testing showed limited impact of the Sn exposure on the 12Cr ODS FeCrAl alloy, comparable to a 1000 h anneal in Ar at 400 °C. These results suggest that pre-oxidation is not sufficient to protect FeCrAl alloys in contact with flowing liquid Sn at 350°-400 °C.

Investigation of the excited states of 114 Sn using the GRIFFIN spectrometer at TRIUMF

The semi-magic 110-122 Sn isotopes display signs of shape coexistence in their excited 0 + states, which, in contrast to the spherical 0+ ground states, are deformed. Here, this paper investigates the nuclear structure of 114 Sn using the competing β + decay and electron capture of a radioactive beam of 114 Sb produced at the TRIUMF-ISAC facility using the GRIFFIN spectrometer. This study will allow for an in-depth understanding of the excited 0 + states in 114 Sn, by focusing on their decay patterns. In the present experiment, transitions at 856.2-keV and 1405.0-keV, which were observed in an earlier β + decay study but not placed in the 114 Sn level scheme, have been Physics, assigned to the level scheme in connection to the 0$^+_3$ level at 2156.0-keV. Properly assigning these transitions refines the level scheme and enhances our understanding of the nuclear structure in 114 Sn.

Newly formed dust within the circumstellar environment of SN Ia-CSM 2018evt

Dust associated with various stellar sources in galaxies at all cosmic epochs remains a controversial topic, particularly whether supernovae play an important role in dust production. We report evidence of dust formation in the cold, dense shell behind the ejecta–circumstellar medium (CSM) interaction in the Type Ia-CSM supernova (SN) 2018evt three years after the explosion, characterized by a rise in mid-infrared emission accompanied by an accelerated decline in the optical radiation of the SN. Such a dust-formation picture is also corroborated by the concurrent evolution of the profiles of the Hα emission line. Our model suggests enhanced CSM dust concentration at increasing distances from the SN as compared to what can be expected from the density profile of the mass loss from a steady stellar wind. By the time of the last mid-infrared observations at day +1,041, a total amount of 1.2 ± 0.2 × 10 -2 M ⊙ of new dust has been formed by SN 2018evt, making SN 2018evt one of the most prolific dust factories among supernovae with evidence of dust formation. The unprecedented witness of the intense production procedure of dust may shed light on the perceptions of dust formation in cosmic history.

Recent Progress in Developing Nb 3 Sn Conductors With Increased Specific Heat

A possible approach to reducing Nb 3 Sn magnet training is to increase the energy margin of Nb 3 Sn conductors by enhancing their specific heat (C p ). For this study, we have been developing Nb 3 Sn conductors with increased C p by incorporating substances with high C p at 2-10 K based on a conductor design that is compatible with standard Nb 3 Sn strand production. In the past couple of years our efforts have been mainly focused on improving strand design (e.g., position of high- C p filaments, thickness of the Cu tube for the high-C p filaments, ratio of the Cu powder to the high-C p substance, filament spacing, etc.) in order to obtain good strand drawability and to reduce degradation after rolling, which is needed for production of Rutherford cables. We also tried a new high-C p substance, Gd 2 O 2 S, and verified that it has much higher C p over the whole magnetic field range than the Gd 2 O 3 we used before. With that development work we can now produce high-C p strands with good drawability and low levels of degradation after rolling. This paper reports our findings and the current status of the development of high-C p Nb 3 Sn conductors.

Temperature-Dependent Sn Incorporation and Defect Formation in Pseudomorphic SiSn Layers on Si (001) via Molecular Beam Epitaxy

SiSn alloys have attracted growing interest for group-IV bandgap engineering, although their epitaxial growth remains challenging due to the extremely low equilibrium solubility of Sn in Si. In this work, fully strained (pseudomorphic) SiSn epitaxial layers were grown on Si (001) substrates by means of molecular beam epitaxy. A systematic investigation reveals a strong inverse correlation between growth temperature and Sn incorporation efficiency. Despite a constant Sn flux, the incorporated Sn composition decreases from 5.5% to 3.2% as the growth temperature increases, indicating a pronounced temperature dependence of Sn incorporation. Reflection high-energy electron diffraction indicates a gradual transition of the growth from two-dimensional to three-dimensional with increasing film thickness. Structural characterization by means of X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy confirms the pseudomorphic growth and smooth surface morphology and reveals twins and stacking faults near the surface region. These results establish a quantitative reference for SiSn growth kinetics and provide guidance for future studies of SiSn and SiGeSn alloys in silicon-compatible electronic and optoelectronic applications.

Formation mechanisms of Sn-rich δ phase and its role in strengthening Cu-10Sn manufactured by laser powder bed fusion

Cu-Sn alloys produced via laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) additive manufacturing (AM) have gained significant attention because they combine the advantages of AM relevant to intricate component design with outstanding combinations of strength, ductility, and resistance to wear and corrosion. However, a detailed understanding of the microstructure that contributes to the enhancement of the mechanical properties of L-PBF Cu-10Sn alloys remains unclear. In particular, there is a lack of understanding of the formation mechanisms of the Sn-rich δ phase commonly observed in Cu-10Sn. This study reveals two distinct variants of the δ phase possessing unique morphological characteristics. These characteristics are attributed to the local solidification conditions inherent to the melt pool boundaries versus those at the interiors of melt pools. A phase transformation pathway that elucidates the origin of the morphological variants of the δ phase from the Sn-rich metastable phases during the cyclic heating of the AM process is proposed. We report superior mechanical properties in L-PBF Cu-10Sn compared to those of conventionally manufactured counterparts due to the synergistic contributions from grain boundaries, dislocations, and the δ phase. Notably, the δ phase alone contributes approximately 22 % to the overall strength observed in the L-PBF Cu-10Sn alloy. The discovery of two types of distinct Sn-rich δ phase offers key insights into precise microstructural control in AM Cu-Sn alloys to enhance mechanical properties, providing practical strategies for improving material performance for diverse applications in automotive, aerospace, and machinery industries.

Exploring the interfacial structure and crystallinity for direct growth of Mn 3 Sn(0001) on sapphire (0001) by molecular beam epitaxy

The Kagome antiferromagnet Mn 3 Sn has garnered a lot of attention due to the presence of interesting properties such as anomalous Hall effects and Nernst effects. Until now, few papers have been reported to grow using molecular beam epitaxy with a buffer layer or on other substrates. In this paper, we discuss the synthesis of crystalline Mn 3 Sn layers, prepared on Al 2 O 3 (0001) without a buffer layer using molecular beam epitaxy. The growth is monitored in-situ using reflection high energy electron diffraction and measured ex-situ using X-ray diffraction, Rutherford back-scattering, and cross-sectional scanning transmission electron microscopy. The samples were deposited at 524 ± 5 °C, with an Mn: Sn atomic flux ratio of 3.2:1 for 90 minutes. Orientation relationships between the Mn 3 Sn films and the sapphire substrates are determined from in-plane and out-of-plane measurements. Our analysis indicates that the resulting film is predominantly c−plane oriented. Lastly, the samples prepared in this way were found to be discontiguous, showing a 3-dimensional morphology. According to first-principles calculations, the Mn 3 Sn exhibits a displaced Kagome structure in the very first stages of growth, for 2ML and 4ML growth on Al 2 O 3 (0001). This result is corroborated by calculating the surface formation energies and explains the observed RHEED patterns.

Porous Semiconducting K–Sn–Mo–S Aerogel: Synthesis, Local Structure, and Ion-Exchange Properties

Chalcogenide-based aerogels are emerging porous semiconducting nanomaterials that appeal to applications in clean energy and the environment. Here, we report a novel gel, potassium–tin–molybdenum–sulfides (KTMS), that integrates the electrostatically bound K + ions in the covalent network of Sn–Mo–S. Its gelation requires a concurrent reduction of Mo 6+ → Mo 4+/5+ and the oxidation of S 2– → Sn – (n ≈ 1) and Sn 2+ → Sn 4+ . KTMS is an amorphous semiconductor showing quantum confinement effects on band gap energies, 2.1 → 1.4 → 0.9 eV for its wet- → aero- → xerogels. Synchrotron X-ray pair distribution function (PDF) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) revealed a complex local structure of KTMS consisting of molecular Mo 2 (S 2 ) 6 and Mo 3 S(S 2 ) 6 clusters. In addition, the Sn–S coordination is related to crystalline Na4Sn3S8 and SnS2. KTMS also demonstrated the removal of the radionuclides of Cs + , Sr 2+ , and UO 2 2+ from ppm to ppb levels with distribution constants (Kd) up to ≥104 mL/g. Notably, despite the lack of atomic periodicity in the amorphous KTMS, the K+ ion is ion-exchangeable with chemically diverse Sr 2+ , Cs + , and UO 2 2+ in aqueous solutions; especially the ion-exchange properties of Sr 2+ and UO 2 2+ ≡(O=U=O) 2+ is not known to any chalcogels known to date. The sequestration of Cs + and Sr 2+ was achieved by the exchange of K + in the amorphous KTMS, and the removal of [O=U 6+ =O] 2+ synergistically involves surface sorption via -S····U 6+ =O 2 2+ covalent interactions and ion-exchange via the hard–soft Lewis acid–base paradigm. Overall, cooperative roles played by the diverse bonding motifs, surface-exposed Lewis basic frameworks, and polarizability of the (poly)sulfides make it an exceptional adsorbent for chemically diverse radioactive species. This finding will guide the design of superior sorbents for chemically distinct metal ion separation.

Cubic Crystal Structure Formation and Optical Properties within the Ag–B II –M IV –X (B II = Sr, Pb; M IV = Si, Ge, Sn; X = S, Se) Family of Semiconductors

Quaternary chalcogenide semiconductors are promising materials for energy conversion and nonlinear optical applications, with properties tunable primarily by varying the elemental composition and crystal structure. Here, we first analyze the connections among several cubic crystal structure types, as well as the orthorhombic Ag 2 PbGeS 4 -type structure, reported for select members within the Ag–B II –M IV –X (B II = Sr, Pb; M IV = Si, Ge, Sn; X = S, Se) compositional space. Focusing on the Ag–Pb–Si–S and Ag–Sr–Sn–S systems, we show that one structure type, with the formulas Ag 2 Pb 3 Si 2 S 8 and Ag 2 Sr 3 Sn 2 S 8 , is favored. We have prepared powder and single-crystal samples of Ag 2 Pb 3 Si 2 S 8 and Ag 2 Sr 3 Sn 2 S 8 , showing that each takes on the noncentrosymmetric cubic space group I$\bar{43}$d and is isostructural to the previously reported compound Ag 2 Sr 3 Ge 2 Se 8 . Through hybrid density functional theory calculations, these cubic compounds are demonstrated to be (quasi-)direct band gap semiconductors with high densities of states at the band maxima. Furthermore, the band-gap energies are measured by reflectance spectroscopy as 1.95(3) and 2.66(4) eV for Ag 2 Pb 3 Si 2 S 8 and Ag 2 Sr 3 Sn 2 S 8 , respectively. We further measure the optical properties and show the electronic band structures of three other isostructural A I –B II –M IV –X-type materials, i.e., Ag 2 Sr 3 Si 2 S 8 , Ag 2 Sr 3 Ge 2 S 8 , and Ag 2 Sr 3 Ge 2 Se 8 , showing that the band gaps can be predictably tuned by element substitution. Detailed visual analyses of the different structures and of their relationships with other members of the Ag–B II –M IV –X compositional family provide a basis for a broader understanding of the structure formation and optoelectronic properties within the quaternary chalcogenide semiconductor family.

Metal Sulfide Ion Exchangers: High Acid Stability of Na 2 x Mg 2 y – x Sn 4– y S 8 (NMS) and Topotactic Conversion to 2D Solid Acids with Semiconducting Character

Metal sulfide ion exchange materials (MSIEs) are of interest for nuclear waste remediation applications. Here, we report the high stability of two structurally related metal sulfide ion exchange materials, Na 2x Mg 2y–x Sn 4–y S 8 (Mg-NMS) and Na 2 SnS 3 (Na-NMS), in strongly acid media, in addition to the preparation of Na 2x Ni 2y–x Sn 4–y S 8 (Ni-NMS). Their formation progress during synthesis is studied with in-situ methods, with the target phases appearing in <15 min, reaction completion in <12 h, and high yields (75–80%). Upon contact with nitric or hydrochloric acid, these materials topotactically exchange Na + for H + , proceeding in a stepwise protonation pathway for Na 5.33 Sn 2.67 S 8 . Na-NMS is stable in 2 M HNO 3 and Mg-NMS is stable in 4 M HNO 3 for up to 4 h, while both NMS materials are stable in 6 M HCl for up to 4 days. However, the treatment of Mg-NMS and Na-NMS with 2–6 M H 2 SO 4 reveals a much slower protonation process since after 4 h of contact both NMS and HMS are present in the solution. The resultant protonated materials, H 2x Mg 2y–x Sn 4–y S 8 and H 4x [(H y Na y–1 ) 1.33x Sn 4––1.33x ]S 8 , are themselves solid acids and readily react with and intercalate a variety of organic amines, where the band gap of the resultant adduct is influenced by amine choice and can be tuned within the range of 1.88(5)–2.27(5) eV. The work function energy values for all materials were extracted from photoemission yield spectroscopy in air (PYSA) measurements and range from 5.47 (2) to 5.76 (2) eV, and the relative band alignments of the materials are discussed. DFT calculations suggest that the electronic structure of Na 2 MgSn 3 S 8 and H 2 MgSn 3 S 8 makes them indirect gap semiconductors with multi-valley band edges, with carriers confined to the [MgSn 3 S 8 ] 2– layers. Light electron effective masses indicate high electron mobilities.

Impact of Sn Lewis Acid Sites on the Dehydration of Cyclohexanol

The impact of Sn on the concentration and strength of acid sites in Al containing zeolites with MFI topology and their catalytic activity for the dehydration of cyclohexanol in the aqueous phase has been investigated. The materials maintain constant Al concentrations and consequently Bro̷nsted acid site (BAS) concentrations, while exhibiting an increasing concentration of Sn Lewis acid sites (LAS). The presence of water alters LAS (Sn) , leading to weak BAS (Sn) that increases the concentration of water in the zeolite micropore, while leaving the rate of dehydration of cyclohexanol unchanged. The TOF increases with the concentration of BAS (Al) in close contact with framework LAS (Sn) , referred to as BAS (Pair) . The increase in the Arrhenius pre-exponential factor, without affecting the activation barrier (E a ), leads to the hypothesis that the proximity of both sites allows for a later transition state induced by the polarization of the C–O bond, leading in turn to a higher transition entropy.

Tunable Semiconducting Behavior and Linear-Nonlinear Optical Properties of Ag–Sn Dual-Doped Nanocrystalline CdO Thin Films for Optoelectronics

Semiconductor-based thin films have a great impact on determining the anticipated optoelectronic device construction and the advancement of cutting-edge applications. Herein, Ag and Sn dual-doped nanocrystalline transparent conducting CdO thin films were prepared on glass substrates using a cost-effective spray coating method, and their structural, morphological, optical, and semiconducting behaviors were investigated. The successful incorporation of Ag and Sn resulted in the polycrystalline nature of the deposited films without the additional peaks, as verified by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The XRD report also revealed the enhanced crystallinity (65%) at the higher doping level (3 wt % Ag and Sn-doped CdO film). All the deposited CdO films exhibited homogeneous, spherical, or round-shaped grains, with agglomeration revealed by scanning electron microscopy analysis. UV–visible spectroscopy was utilized to determine the linear and nonlinear optical properties of the deposited CdO thin films, and a reduction in the band gap from 3.891 to 3.772 eV was observed. A significant enhancement in the first- and third-order nonlinear susceptibility and nonlinear refractive index of the doped CdO films was also observed with increasing doping concentration. Hall effect data were collected at room temperature to investigate the electrical properties of all of the CdO films. The charge carrier concentration of CdO thin films was increased from 142.08 × 10 18 to 169.10 × 10 18 cm –3 , and the highest conductivity was found to be 192 s/cm on doping 3 wt % Ag–Sn. All the CdO thin films exhibited n-type conductivity, while an incredible n-type to p-type charge carrier transition was noticed at a higher doping level (3 wt % Ag–Sn). The findings of the current work are expected to advance the synthesis of semiconductor thin films through cost-effective spray coating methods for optoelectronic device applications.

Simultaneous Development of Antiferromagnetism and Local Symmetry Breaking in a Kagome Magnet (Co 0.45 Fe 0.55 )Sn

CoSn and FeSn, two kagome-lattice metals, have recently attracted significant attention as hosts of electronic flat bands and emergent physical properties. However, current understandings of their physical properties are limited to knowledge of the average crystal structure. Here, we report the Fe-doping induced coemergence of the antiferromagentic (AFM) order and local symmetry breaking in (Co 0.45 Fe 0.55 )Sn. Rietveld analysis on the neutron and synchrotron X-ray diffraction data indicates A-type antiferromagnetic order with the moment pointing perpendicular to the kagome layers, associated with the anomaly in the MSn(1) 2 Sn(2) 4 (M = Co/Fe) octahedral distortion and the lattice constant c. Reverse Monte Carlo (RMC) modeling of the synchrotron X-ray total scattering results captured the subtle local orthorhombic distortion involving off-axis displacements of Sn(2). Our results indicate that the stable hexagonal lattice above T N becomes unstable once the A-type AFM order is formed below T N . Here we argue that the local symmetry breaking has a magnetic origin, since the spatially varied M–Sn(2) bond lengths arise from out-of-plane magnetic exchange coupling J c via the exchange pathway M–Sn(2)–M. Our study provides comprehensive information on the crystal structure in both long-range scale and local scale, unveiling unique coupling between AFM order, octahedral distortion, and hidden local symmetry breaking.
