Rotary shutter mechanism contains optical elements

Two cylindrical shutter mechanisms having fixed outer sleeves and rotating inner sleeves use single stepping motor and Geneva mechanism to sequentially move optical components into path of ultraviolet monochromator for output control to photomultiplier. Photometric and wavelength calibration sources insure shutter positions according to operational phases.

Coaxial anode wire for gas radiation counters

The design and characteristics of a gas radiation counter are discussed. The coaxial anode consists of an elongated central wire covered with an electrically insulating sleeve. Several longitudinally discontinuous segments of an electrically conductive coating are disposed about the insulating sleeve in a coaxial pattern along the length of the central wire. The conductive coating segments form a veto or rejection anode at each end of the central wire and a main or primary charge detecting anode between the ends. The segments are coupled together so that the primary charge detecting anode is connected to detection circuitry in anti-coincidence with the veto anodes. Background radiation detected by either of the veto anodes and the primary charge detecting anode is rejected and the sensitivity of the radiation counter device is increased.

Compound solder joints

Joining technique prevents contamination, may be used to join dissimilar metal tubes, minimizes fluid and gas entrapment, expedites repairs, and can yield joints having leakage rates less than 0.000001 standard cubic cm He/min. Components of joint are solder sleeve, two solder rings, Teflon sleeve, and tubing to be joined.

Splicing shielded cables

Simple repair technique retains cable characteristic impedance. Shielded-Cable Splicing Technique retains cable characteristic impedance. Procedure involves splicing inner conductors in staggered pattern, installing jumper braid by heat-shrinking two solder sleeves, and placing insulation sleeve over repaired section and heat-shrinking it. Two possible insulation materials are modified polyvinylidene fluoride and polytetrafluoroethylene.

Easily-assembled helical heater

Rugged, compact heater is made from 0.1 mm diameter Inconel wire (125 ohms per meter). Heating element is enclosed in PTFE heat-shrink sleeve. Ends of coal pass through small ceramic spools and are silver-brazed to lead wires. Junctions are potted in epoxy or silicon and covered with crimp sleeves and heat-shrink tubing.

Subcutaneous electrode structure

A subcutaneous electrode structure suitable for a chronic implant and for taking a low noise electrocardiogram of an active animal, comprises a thin inflexible, smooth disc of stainless steel having a diameter as of 5 to 30 mm, which is sutured in place to the animal being monitored. The disc electrode includes a radially directed slot extending in from the periphery of the disc for approximately 1/3 of the diameter. Electrical connection is made to the disc by means of a flexible lead wire that extends longitudinally of the slot and is woven through apertures in the disc and held at the terminal end by means of a spot welded tab. Within the slot, an electrically insulative sleeve, such as silicone rubber, is placed over the wire. The wire with the sleeve mounted thereon is captured in the plane of the disc and within the slot by means of crimping tabs extending laterally of the slot and over the insulative wire. The marginal lip of the slot area is apertured and an electrically insulative potting material such as silicone rubber, is potted in place overlaying the wire slot region and through the apertures.

Automated syringe sampler

A number of sampling services are disposed in a rack which slides into a housing. In response to a signal from an antenna, the circutry elements are activated which provide power individually, collectively, or selectively to a servomechanism thereby moving an actuator arm and the attached jawed bracket supporting an evaculated tube towards a stationary needle. One open end of the needle extends through the side wall of a conduit to the interior and the other open end is maintained within the protective sleeve, supported by a bifurcated bracket. A septum in punctured by the end of the needle within the sleeve and a sample of the fluid medium in the conduit flows through the needle and is transferred to a tube. The signal to the servo is then reversed and the actuator arm moves the tube back to its original position permitting the septum to expand and seal the hole made by the needle. The jawed bracket is attached by pivot to the actuator to facilitate tube replacement.

Thrust reverser for a long duct fan engine

A bypass duct outer cowl includes a fixed cascade disposed between axially spaced fixed cowl portions and a translatable cowl sleeve and blocker doors movably disposed on the respective radially outer and inner sides of the cascade. Actuation and linkage structure located entirely within the outer cowl provides for selectively moving the cowl sleeve rearwardly and rotating the blocker doors to a position across the bypass duct to cause the fan airflow to pass through the cascade in a thrust reversing manner.

High-Temperature Helical-Tube Solar Receiver

Solar-thermal receiver used with circular parabolic concentrator to supply about 58 kW thermal power to Brayton engine or industrial process. Solar radiation focused into open end of cylindrical ceramic thermal inertial sleeve 8 in. in diameter that reradiates energy to helical heatexchanger tube surrounding sleeve.

Annular-Tube Reinforcer

Cylindrical tool inserts support sleeves into annular space between coaxial tubes to provide local reinforcement. Tool particularly useful when space between outer ends of coaxial tubes is narrow, requiring thin sleeve.

Making Glass-Fiber-Reinforced Coolant Tubes

New use found for heat-shrinkable sleeves. Smooth, noncontaminating channels for transporting cooling water in Space Shuttle Extravehicularmobility unit made of fiberglass tubing with aid of heat-shrinkable sleeves. Previously, glass fibers from inner walls of tubes contaminate water.

Compliant hydrodynamic fluid journal bearing

An air bearing structure is described that prevents destructive bending moments within the top foil. Welds are eliminated by mounting the top bearing foil in the bearing cartridge sleeve without using a space block. Tabs or pins at the end of the top bearing foil are restrained by slots or stops formed in the cartridge sleeve. These structural members are free to move in a direction normal to the shaft while being restrained from movement in the direction of shaft rotation.

Overriding Faulty Circuit Breakers

Retainer keeps power on in emergency. Simple mechanical device attaches to failed aircraft-type push/pull circuit breaker to restore electrical power temporarily until breaker replaced. Device holds push/pull button in closed position; unnecessary for crewmember to hold button in position by continual finger pressure. Sleeve and plug hold button in, overriding mechanical failure in circuit breaker. Windows in sleeve show button position.

Support For Fragile Borescopes

Fixture supports thin borescopes during inspections through 0.0405-in. orifices. Porescopes, which have diameter of 0.037 in., extremely fragile and often fractured during inspections, contaminating inspected cavitites with debris. Nylon guide tip and acrylic support sleeve and body protect and guide a fragile borescope. Support sleeve press-fitted on body and removed when little clearance around orifice inspected. Otherwise, it helps to stablize fixture. Helps to prevent damage caused by vibrations and eliminates constantly moving view that afflicts unsupported small-diameter borescopes.

Caldron For High-Temperature Alloys

Induction-heated caldron melts high-temperature alloys. Prevents sort of contamination of melts occurring during arc melting in ceramic crucibles. Liquefies 200 grams of solid metal components of alloy like niobium aluminum and makes alloy homogeneous in less than 3 minutes. Plugged sleeve constitutes main body of caldron. Coolant flows through sleeve to prevent it from melting. Mandrel-wound induction coils adjusted to tune source of power. Also serves as mold for casting alloys into such shapes as bars.

A high-speed photography study of cavitation in a dynamically loaded journal bearing

The earlier study made by Jacobson and Hamrock on the cavitation of liquid lubricant films in a dynamically loaded journal bearing was repeated with a quartz sleeve, which was more rigid than the Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) sleeve used previously. Various improvements of the test rig were made concomitantly so that the experimental errors could be better controlled and assessed. The updated speed photography experiment and its results are described.
