Short-Circuited Power Networks

NASA computer program automatically analyzes power-system networks under faulted conditions. Program is general enough to calculate single-line to ground faults and three-phase-to-ground faults. Several novel programing techniques automate analysis while reducing computing time and storage requirements. Program is written in FORTRAN IV for batch execution.

Automatic inspection of silicon wafers

Laser machine scans wafers for contaminating particles which cause open circuits, short circuits, and other defects in integrated circuits and transfers good wafers to integrated circuit processing equipment. Machine is faster and more accurate than human operator using lightfield/dark field microscope.

The NATO III 5 MHz Distribution System

A high performance 5 MHz distribution system is described which has extremely low phase noise and jitter characteristics and provides multiple buffered outputs. The system is completely redundant with automatic switchover and is self-testing. Since the 5 MHz reference signals distributed by the NATO III distribution system are used for up-conversion and multiplicative functions, a high degree of phase stability and isolation between outputs is necessary. Unique circuit design and packaging concepts insure that the isolation between outputs is sufficient to quarantee a phase perturbation of less than 0.0016 deg when other outputs are open circuited, short circuited or terminated in 50 ohms. Circuit design techniques include high isolation cascode amplifiers. Negative feedback stabilizes system gain and minimizes circuit phase noise contributions. Balanced lines, in lieu of single ended coaxial transmission media, minimize pickup.

Self-Validating Thermocouple

Self-Validating Thermocouple (SVT) Systems capable of detecting sensor probe open circuits, short circuits, and unnoticeable faults such as a probe debonding and probe degradation are useful in the measurement of temperatures. SVT Systems provide such capabilities by incorporating a heating or excitation element into the measuring junction of the thermocouple. By heating the measuring junction and observing the decay time for the detected DC voltage signal, it is possible to indicate whether the thermocouple is bonded or debonded. A change in the thermal transfer function of the thermocouple system causes a change in the rise and decay times of the thermocouple output. Incorporation of the excitation element does not interfere with normal thermocouple operation, thus further allowing traditional validation procedures as well.

A comprehensive model to capture electrical discharge and spark channel evolution during spark-ignition processes

Emissions reduction through engine efficiency improvements is a priority for automakers who have turned to unconventional engine operation such as highly dilute, boosted, and stratified charge. Given its importance to flame initiation and sustained turbulent flame propagation, reliable and accurate spark ignition models are necessary to design ignition systems that reduce cyclic indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP) variability and increase engine efficiency in these operation modes. In this paper, secondary electric circuit, short-circuit, blowout, and re-strike sub-models are added to the Lagrangian-Eulerian spark ignition (LESI) model to simulate electrical discharge and spark channel elongation in an inert cross-flow combustion vessel. First, the physics of the underlying sub-models are described and the governing equations discussed with the spark channel voltage expression playing a critical role. Then, the experimental and simulations setups are presented. The results section begins with the derivation of spark channel voltage from experimental results. Then, electrical discharge and spark channel elongation simulations in inert flows are carried out using LESI and compared against experimental results. Finally, the results validate the model's ability to accurately predict spark channel elongation, as well as the occurrence of short-circuits, blowouts, re-strikes, and end of discharge.
