Orbital contributions in the element-resolved valence electronic structure of Bi 2 Se 3

In this work, we studied the bulk band structure of a topological insulator (TI) Bi 2 Se 3 and determined the contributions of the Bi and Se orbital states to the valence bands using standing-wave excited hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (SW-HAXPES). This SW technique can provide the element-resolved information and extract individual Bi and Se contributions to the Bi2Se3 valence band. Comparisons with density-functional theory calculations (local density approximation and GW) reveal that the Bi 6s, Bi 6p, and Se 4p states are dominant in the Bi 2 Se 3 HAXPES valence band. Furthermore, these findings pave a way for studying the element-resolved band structure and orbital contributions of this class of TIs.

Single-crystal growth and superconductivity in RbNi 2 Se 2

Herein we report the synthesis and characterization of RbNi 2 Se 2 , an analog of the iron chalcogenide superconductor Rb x Fe 2 Se 2 , via transport, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations. A superconducting transition at T c =1.20 K is identified. In the normal state, RbNi 2 Se 2 shows paramagnetic and Fermi-liquid behaviors. A large Sommerfeld coefficient yields an effective electron mass of m* ≈ 6m e . In the superconducting state, zero-field electronic specific-heat data C es can be described by a two-gap BCS model, indicating that RbNi 2 Se 2 is a possible multigap superconductor. Our density functional theory calculations and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements demonstrate that RbNi 2 Se 2 exhibits relatively weak correlations and multiband characteristics, consistent with the multigap superconductivity.

Manipulating topological properties in Bi 2 Se 3 / BiSe /transition metal dichalcogenide heterostructures with interface charge transfer

Heterostructures of topological insulator Bi 2 Se 3 on transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) offer a new materials platform for studying novel quantum states by exploiting the interplay among topological orders, charge orders and magnetic orders. Here, the diverse interface attributes, such as material combination, charge re-arrangement, defect and strain, can be utilized to manipulate the quantum properties of this class of materials. Recent experiments of Bi 2 Se 3 /NbSe 2 heterostructures show signatures of strong Rashba band splitting due to the presence of a BiSe buffer layer, but the atomic level mechanism is not fully understood. We conduct first-principles studies of the Bi 2 Se3/BiSe/TMDC heterostructures with five different TMDC substrates (1T phase VSe 2 , MoSe 2 , TiSe 2 , and 2H phase NbSe 2 , MoSe 2 ). We find significant charge transfer at both BiSe/TMDC and Bi 2 Se 3 /BiSe interfaces driven by the work function difference, which stabilizes the BiSe layer as an electron donor and creates interface dipole. The electric field of the interface dipole breaks the inversion symmetry in the Bi 2 Se 3 layer, leading to the giant Rashba band splitting in two quintuple layers and the recovery of the Dirac point in three quintuple layers, with the latter otherwise only occurring in thicker samples with at least six Bi 2 Se 3 quintuple layers. Besides, we find that strain can significantly affect the charge transfer at the interfaces. Our study presents a promising avenue for tuning topological properties in heterostructures of two-dimensional materials, with potential applications in quantum devices.

Lattice Dynamics of Sb 2 Se 3 from Inelastic Neutron and X-Ray Scattering

The lattice dynamics of orthorhombic Sb 2 Se 3 is studied by a combination of inelastic neutron and 121 Sb nuclear inelastic scattering giving access to the total and Sb partial density of phonon states (DPS). The Se partial DPS is determined from the difference between the total and Sb partial DPS. The total DPS is determined at 39, 150, and 300 K, and an analysis of the temperature-induced mode shifts in combination with low-temperature powder diffraction data is provided. Using an earlier reported theoretical approach, the corresponding total and partial DPS of Sb 2 Se 3 are calculated by first-principles calculations. Herein, a detailed analysis of the Grüneisen parameter, element-specific and bulk Debye temperatures, and the mean force constants as derived from the experimental data and discrete Fourier transform calculations is provided. In general, the calculations underestimate the strength of the covalent Sb-Se bonds.

Development of Cr, Se, U, Sb, and Te isotopes as indicators of redox reactions, contaminant fate, and contaminant transport in aqueous systems: A review

Cr, Se, U, Sb, and Te are toxic, redox-active elements that are more mobile and environmentally problematic in their oxidized forms, and less mobile and bioavailable in their reduced forms. This chapter reviews the development of Cr, Se, U, Sb, and Te isotope ratio measurements as new indicators of redox reactions and contaminant migration. Reliable analytical methods exist, but are still evolving. Understanding of isotopic fractionation induced by various (bio)geochemical processes has been explored in dozens of publications, yet is far from complete: Reduction reactions, the major driver of isotopic variation, have been relatively well studied. However, the magnitude of fractionation is variable and the systematics of that variation are still being explored. Isotopic fractionation induced by oxidation reactions is not well understood. Non-redox reactions, which involve smaller changes in bonding of these elements, tend to induce less isotopic fractionation, but can nonetheless cause significant isotopic shifts. Field applications of Cr, Se, U isotope ratios have demonstrated that they are useful as indicators of reduction in natural systems. A few studies suggest they are also useful as indicators of oxidation and contaminant sources. The physical and chemical complexity of groundwater systems hinders accurate quantitative interpretation of Cr, Se, U isotope data using simple models. Numerical models have been developed that capture the behavior of complex, coupled systems and enable the most effective extraction of information from field data sets.

Interfacially Enhanced Superconductivity in Fe(Te,Se)/Bi 4 Te 3 Heterostructures

Realizing topological superconductivity by integrating high-transition-temperature (T C ) superconductors with topological insulators can open new paths for quantum computing applications. Here, a new approach is reported for increasing the superconducting transition temperature $T^{onset}_C$ by interfacing the unconventional superconductor Fe(Te,Se) with the topological insulator Bi–Te system in the low-Se doping regime, near where superconductivity vanishes in the bulk. The critical finding is that the $T^{onset}_C$ of Fe(Te,Se) increases from nominally non-superconducting to as high as 12.5 K when Bi 2 Te3 is replaced with the topological phase Bi 4 Te 3 . Interfacing Fe(Te,Se) with Bi4Te3 is also found to be critical for stabilizing superconductivity in monolayer films where $T^{onset}_C$ can be as high as 6 K. Measurements of the electronic and crystalline structure of the Bi 4 Te 3 layer reveal that a large electron transfer, epitaxial strain, and novel chemical reduction processes are critical factors for the enhancement of superconductivity. This novel route for enhancing T C in an important epitaxial system provides new insight on the nature of interfacial superconductivity and a platform to identify and utilize new electronic phases.

Effect of Ion Irradiation on Amorphous and Crystalline Ge–Se and Their Application as Phase Change Temperature Sensor

Research on phase change materials is predominantly focused on their application as memory devices or for temperature control which requires low phase change temperature. The Ge–Se binary chalcogenide glass system with its wide glass-forming region is a potential candidate for high-temperature and high-radiation phase change applications. In this study, the concept of employing Ge x Se 100– x glasses to monitor high temperature (450–528 °C) using the phase change effect, is reported. Materials selection, device structure, and performance of prototype sensors are analyzed. In addition, the effect of heavy ion irradiation by Xe ions with energies of 200, 600, and 1000 keV (fluence ≈10 14 cm –2 ) on the Ge x Se 100– x ( x = 30, 33, 40) thin films and phase change devices is studied. The irradiation effect on the amorphous and crystalline structure of the thin films is evaluated by Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Although the changes in the structural units of amorphous films are negligible, in crystalline films orthorhombic-GeSe 2 crystals are found to be most affected by irradiation and a new phase, orthorhombic GeSe is found in the thin films after irradiation. The performance of a sensor with an active film of Ge 40 Se 60 is also shown as an example.

The Crystal Structure of BaZn 2 Se 2 (OH) 2 Featuring Brownmillerite‐Type Layers

Abstract A bimetallic hydroxychalcogenide, BaZn 2 Se 2 (OH) 2 , was synthesized through hydrothermal pouch methods. The single crystal X‐ray diffraction and electron diffraction indicates that the phase crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pnma and is composed of anionic layers [ZnSe 3/3 (OH) 1/1 ] − that are separated and charged balanced by Ba 2+ cations. The [ZnSe 3/3 (OH) 1/1 ] – layer comprises two unique Zn sites, which form interpenetrating zigzag chains with an in‐plane dipole moment and adopts a brownmillerite‐type structural motif. The adjacent layers contain tetrahedrally coordinated Zn chains of opposite handedness related by an inversion center, which cancel the microscopic dipoles to minimize the macroscopic electric polarization. The adoption of a brownmillerite structural motif in BaZn 2 Se 2 (OH) 2 can be rationalized by the distinct charge difference between Se 2− and OH − anions, which creates a sufficient dipole moment in the ZnSe 3 (OH) tetrahedra to allow the occurrence of twisted chains. FTIR spectroscopy confirms the existence of OH − anions and DFT calculations indicate that BaZn 2 Se 2 (OH) 2 is a semiconductor with a direct band gap. This work expands the chemistry of the brownmillerite family from traditional homoanionic oxides to multianion hydroxychalcogenides, offering a new opportunity to explore tunable structural complexity for better design of functional materials.

Quantum oscillation studies of the nodal line semimetal Ni 3 In 2 S 2-x Se x

Ternary shandite compounds with the general formula T 3 M 2 X 2 (T = Ni, Co, Rh or Pd; M = Sn, In, or Pb; and X = S or Se) have emerged as a large pool of topological semimetals. This family of compounds hosts different topological phases for various combinations of T, M and X. This paper reports the observation of quantum oscillations under the high magnetic fields in Ni 3 In 2 S 2-x Se x single crystals. Angular dependence of oscillation frequency suggests an evolution of the Fermi surface from three-dimensional to two-dimensional on Se substitution for S in Ni 3 In 2 S 2 . Here, the effective mass obtained for each composition by fitting the oscillation amplitude with the Lifshitz-Kosevich formula, shows no significant change, suggesting that the topological phase might be relatively robust against enhanced spin-orbit coupling upon Se doping in Ni 3 In 2 S 2 .

Scanning tunneling microscopy study of the antiferromagnetic topological insulator MnBi 2 Se 4

Topological insulators with intrinsic magnetic ordering such as MnBi 2 Se 4 have been predicted to host many exotic topological phenomena including dissipationless edge states and magnetoelectric effects. Here we use scanning tunneling microscopy to study the surface of MnBi 2 Se 4 epitaxial thin films. Large scale topographic images show steps between van der Waals layers and screw dislocations. While we find the Se-termination predominant on the surface, areas attributed to Bi-termination are found at the edges of small islands in as-grown films, or in larger areas upon removal of surface capping. Here, we compare these terminations through an analysis of step heights, atomic resolution images and tunneling spectroscopy. Tunneling spectra on the Se-termination reveals semiconducting behavior, with an apparent bandgap of >0.18eV that depends on the tip height. In contrast, tunneling spectra of the Bi-termination appears gapless, which could be an indication of dangling bond states on the surface. In both cases, a hexagonal 3.9Å lattice is observed that is consistent with the expected crystal structure.

Development of deformed intruder structures along the N=50 magic number: Insights from 83 Se

The 83 Se nucleus was studied in the context of shape coexistence employing a 82 Se(d,p) 83 Se reaction performed in inverse kinematics with the GALILEO-II + SPIDER setup to reach the desired selectivity on the reaction channel of interest via γ -particle coincidences. The lifetimes of the 1/2 + 540-keV and 3/2$^{+}_{3}$ 1100-keV low-lying intruder states of 83 Se were measured for the first time by employing the Recoil Distance Doppler Shift and the Doppler Shift Attenuation Method. The deduced transition probabilities, together with the mixing ratios obtained from a separate neutron-capture experiment performed at ILL with the FIPPS array, are compared and discussed in the framework of shell-model calculations performed with the PFSDG-U Hamiltonian. Large transition probabilities of hundreds of e 2 fm 4 were found for the E 2 decays of the states built on top of the intruders, pointing to the development of quadrupole collectivity and large deformation in the proximity of N = 50 shell closure.

A review of Sb 2 Se 3 photovoltaic absorber materials and thin-film solar cells

Energy generated from environmentally friendly, cost-effective solar cells is a key aspect for developing a clean renewable-energy economy. Non-toxic and Earth-abundant materials with high absorption coefficient (>10 5 cm -1 ) and optimal bandgap (1-1.5 eV) have received great attention as photovoltaic (PV) absorber layers during the last few decades. Among them, antimony selenide (Sb 2 Se 3 ) has been a promising PV absorber, with steadily increasing power-conversion efficiency (PCE) compared to other emerging compounds. Very recent studies showed that high-quality ZnO:Al/ZnO/CdS/TiO 2 /Sb 2 Se 3 /MoSe 2 /Mo devices with PCE of 9.2% can be fabricated using cost-effective novel compounds. Considering these recent advances, this article provides an overview of the material properties of Sb2Se3 thin films and the recent progress made with Sb 2 Se 3 -based solar cells. Furthermore, analysis of Sb 2 Se 3 -based thin-film solar cells has also shown that the devices have relatively good light management due to their suitable bandgap and high absorption coefficient, whereas carrier management, i.e. collection efficiency of photo-generated carriers, needs significant improvement. Overall, this study provides background knowledge on material properties and device performance and suggests main research directions to overcome the limiting factors of solar cell performance.

Ultralow Thermal Conductivity and Thermoelectric Properties of Rb 2 Bi 8 Se 13

Complex bismuth chalcogenides are narrow band gap semiconductors with intrinsic low thermal conductivity, which exhibit high potential as highly efficient thermoelectric materials. Here, we assess the basic thermoelectric properties of polycrystalline Rb 2 Bi 8 Se 13 in the temperature range 300-823 K as well as performance-optimizing strategies. We find that the as-made bulk samples are single phase with the monoclinic crystal structure (P2 1 /m) and crystallize in layer morphology. The pristine sample exhibits an exceedingly low lattice thermal conductivity of 0.6- 0.46 W·m -1 ·K -1 at 300-823 K, which derives from strong lattice anharmonicity, large Grüneisen parameters, and low phonon velocities induced by the complex crystal structure with heavy atom Bi and a large unit cell. Here, the Cl doping successfully enhances the carrier concentration in Rb 2 Bi 8 Se 13 with a negligible impact on the electronic band structure, displaying common doping behaviors. Se vacancy, on the contrary, leads to n-type doping and enhances the effective mass and power factors more significantly. Consequently, a maximum ZT of ~0.75 at 823 K for the 0.3% Se-vacancy-doped sample is obtained.

Local Distortions and Metal–Semiconductor–Metal Transition in Quasi-One-Dimensional Nanowire Compounds AV 3 Q 3 O δ (A = K, Rb, Cs and Q = Se, Te)

Metal cluster compounds have garnered renewed interest in the search for novel superconductors and topological semimetals owing to structural instabilities of metal-cluster geometries and broken symmetries. Here we synthesized needle-like crystals of the V-cluster-based quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) materials AV 3 Q 3 O δ (A = K, Rb, Cs, Q= Se, Te) which can also be viewed as being composed of parallel nanowires. We examine how changes in their average and local structure control their electronic properties. All compounds crystallize in the TIFe 3 Te 3 -type structure (P6 3 /m space group) with infinite (V 3 )Q 3 ) - double-walled columnar chains separated by A + cations. Our single-crystal and synchrotron powder diffraction studies indicate oxygen atoms partially occupy the center site of the V 6 octahedral metal cluster cages in KV 3 Te 3 O 0.33 , RbV 3 Te 3 O 0.32 , and CsV 3 Te 3 O 0.35 , whereas KV 3 Se 3 is structurally oxygen-free. Our synchrotron X-ray pair distribution function (PDF) analyses indicate that the oxygen-free V 6 cluster octahedra in KV 3 Se 3 are highly distorted perpendicular to the chain direction even at room temperature, reducing the symmetry of the average structure from hexagonal P6 3 /m to monoclinic P2 1 /m. Our theoretical calculation supports this P2 1 /m distortion and suggests the structure further distorts to P2 1 or P2 1 /c at lower temperatures. In contrast, the oxygen-centered V-cluster in KV 3 Te 3 O 0.33 exhibits a V-3-triangle-trimerization along the chain direction. This feature is discernible from the local PDF and is consistent with lattice dynamical calculations based on density functional theory. Resistivity measurements indicate that KV 3 Se 3 exhibits metallic behavior, whereas a dramatic metal-semiconductor-metal transition emerges in KV 3 Te 3 O 6.33 , RbV 3 Te 3 O 0.32 , and CsV 3 Te 3 O 0.35 because of oxygen disorder and changes in local structure captured from our electronic structure analyses of the Fermi surface. Our investigation of the AV 3 Q 3 O 6 family demonstrates the importance of understanding local changes in structure driven by electronic instabilities, which can guide the search for new quantum materials in other low-dimensional cluster-compound materials.

Spin–Flop and Metamagnetic Transition in Monoclinic Eu 4 Bi 6 Se 13

This study explores an investigation of the crystallographic, electronic, and magnetic properties of the europium-based bismuth selenide compound Eu 4 Bi 6 Se 13 , with particular focus on its magnetic anisotropy. This compound adopts a monoclinic crystal structure classified under the P2 1 /m space group (#11). It exhibits distinctive structural features, including substantial Eu–Se coordination numbers (6 and 8), Bi–Se ladders, and linear chains of Eu atoms that propagate along the b-axis. Electronic resistivity assessments indicate that Eu 4 Bi 6 Se 13 exhibits metallic behavior. As the magnetic field is oriented along the b-axis, magnetic characterization reveals uniaxial magnetic anisotropy, with metamagnetic transitions appearing at approximately 12 kOe and a lower field. In the field below 10 kOe, the spin-flop transition is observed with possible domain-induced hysteresis. This behavior supports the identification of metamagnetic features in field-dependent measurements attributable to the europium spins.

Spin Reorientation in Antiferromagnetic MnPd 5 Se with an Anti-CeCoIn 5 Structure Type

MnPd 5 Se, a derivative of the anti-CeCoIn 5 -type phase, was synthesized from a high-temperature solid-state reaction, structurally determined by X-ray diffraction, and magnetically characterized with a combined magnetic measurement and neutron powder diffraction (NPD). According to the X-ray diffraction results, MnPd 5 Se crystallizes in a layered tetragonal structure with the same space group as CeCoIn 5 , P4/mmm (No. 123). MnPd5Se shows antiferromagnetic ordering around 80 K on the basis of the magnetic property measurements. An A-type antiferromagnetic structure was revealed from the analysis of neutron powder diffraction results at 300, 50, and 6 K. Moreover, a spin orientation rotation was observed as the temperature decreased. Pd L 3 X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy results for MnPd5Se semiqualitatively correlate with the calculated density of states supporting a nominal 0.2 electron transfer into the Pd d orbital from either Se or Mn in the compound. The discovery of MnPd 5 Se, along with our previously reported MnT 5 Pn (T = Pd or Pt; Pn = P or As), provides a tunable system for studying the magnetic ordering from ferromagnetism to antiferromagnetism with the strong spin–orbit coupling effect.

Suppression of Superconductivity and Nematic Order in Fe 1–y Se 1–x S x (0 ≤ x ≤ 1; y ≤ 0.1) Crystals by Anion Height Disorder

Connections between crystal chemistry and critical temperature T c have been in the focus of superconductivity, one of the most widely studied phenomena in physics, chemistry and materials science alike. In most Fe-based superconductors materials chemistry and physics conspire so that T c correlates with the average anion height above the Fe plane, i.e. with the geometry of the FeAs 4 or FeCh 4 (Ch = Te, Se, S) tetrahedron. Here, by synthesizing Fe 1-y Se 1-x S x (0 ≤ x ≤ 1, y ≤ 0.1) we find that in alloyed crystals T c is not correlated with the anion height as most other Fe superconductors. Instead, changes in T c (x) and tetragonal-to-orthorombic (nematic) transition T s (x) on cooling are correlated with disorder in Fe vibrations in direction orthogonal to Fe planes, along the crystallographic c-axis. The disorder stems from the random nature of S substitution, causing deformed Fe(Se,S) 4 tetrahedra with different Fe-Se and Fe-S bond distances. Our results provide evidence of T c and T s suppression by disorder in anion height. The connection to local crystal chemistry may be exploited in computational prediction of new superconducting materials with FeSe/S building blocks.
