A conceptual current surge protector for incandescent lamps

Negative-temperature coefficient device /thermistor/ in series with a lamp filament alleviates high filament surge current during initial application of power. The thermistor should be selected for a cold resistance approximately equal to one fourth of the normal hot resistance of the filaments to be protected.

Surge current and electron swarm tunnel tests of thermal blanket and ground strap materials

The results are described of a series of current conduction tests with a thermal control blanket to which grounding straps have been attached. The material and the ground strap attachment procedure are described. The current conduction tests consisted of a surge current examination of the ground strap and a dilute flow, energetic electron deposition and transport through the bulk of the insulating film of this thermal blanket material. Both of these test procedures were used previously with thermal control blanket materials.

Surge protection with automatic reset

Circuit turns power off automatically when surge occurs and restores power when voltage returns to normal. Transmitters and other equipment are protected in electrically noisy environments; however, if three transient overvoltages (or continuous overvoltage) are sensed within 3.2 seconds, circuit turns power supply off permanently since serious failure may have occurred.

A universal procedure for evaluation and application of surge-protective devices

The source, nature, and frequency of occurrence of transients must be identified and a representative standard test wave chosen for proof testing. The performance of candidate suppressor devices then can be evaluated against the withstand goals set for the equipment. The various suppressors divide into two classes of generic behavior. The key to a universal procedure for evaluating both classes lies in representing transients as quasi-current sources of defined current impulse duration. The available surge current is established by the Thevenin equivalent transient voltage and source impedance. A load line drawn on the V-I characteristic graph of the suppressor quickly determines the clamping voltage and peak current. These values then can be compared to the requirement. The deposited energy and average power dissipation for multiple transients also can be calculated. The method is illustrated with a design example for motor vehicle alternator load dump suppression.

Study of surge current effects on solid tantalum capacitors

Results are presented of a 2,000 hour cycled life test program conducted to determine the effect of short term surge current screening on approximately 47 micron f/volt solid tantalum capacitors. The format provides average values and standard deviations of the parameters, capacitance, dissipation factor, and equivalent series resistance at 120 Hz, 1KHz, abd 40 KHz.

The Uranian satellites - Surface compositions and opposition brightness surges

The present, 5 percent-resolution spectrophotometry for the Uranian satellites Ariel, Umbriel, Titania and Oberon cover the 1.43-2.57 wavelength region and confirm the presence of a spectrally dominant water ice component in their surfaces. The 1.5- and 2.0-micron water absorption band depths and continuum reflectance indicate significant differences among the surface compositional properties of the four satellites, and comparisons of the spectra with those of other solar system bodies and of laboratory water ice spectra imply the presence of a significant nonwater ice component on/in their surfaces. The nature of this nonwater ice component is suggested by the data to be similar to that of such substances as carbon black. Near-IR opposition brightness surges of Ariel, Titania and Oberon are found to be among the largest in the solar system.

Determination of compressor in-stall characteristics from engine surge transients

A technique for extracting the in-stall pumping characteristics for an axial flow compressor operating in an engine system environment is developed. The technique utilizes a Hybrid computer simulation of the compressor momentum equation into which actual transient data are used to provide all terms but the desired compressor characteristic. The compressor force characteristic as a function of corrected flow and speed result from the computation. The critical problem of data filtering is addressed. Results for a compressor operating in a turbofan engine are presented and comparison is made with the conventional compressor map. The relationship of the compressor surge characteristic with its rotating stall characteristic is explored. Initial interpretation of the measured results is presented.

Spicules and surges

It is argued that spicules, macrospicules and surges are manifestations of the same phenomenon occurring on different scales. A mechanism that can be successfully applied to explain the phenomenon on all three scales is sought.

The 'convection surge' mechanism of ion acceleration during substorms

To explain the presence of the so-called 'bounce-phase-bunched' ion distributions (eV range to about 20 keV) observed in the earth's geosynchronous magnetosphere in association with substorm expansion phases, Quinn and Southwood proposed the 'convection surge' mechanism of ion energization. This mechanism is associated with a sudden earthward displacement of curved field lines resulting from the short-lived application of an intense, east-west electric field. A quantitative computer model of the mechanism has been constructed here. It is found that the mechanism easily generates the bounce-phase-bunched ion distributions in question. Additionally, the mechanism can generate dramatically field-aligned distributions. It is proposed that a key general characteristic of geosynchronous ion pitch angle distributions, field-aligned low energies, and field-perpendicular high energies is a signature of this energization mechanism. The presence of field-aligned ions cannot be presumed to be a signature of recent ionospheric extraction.

Surges as tracers of magnetic lines

During the maximum activity year 1980, chromospheric mass ejections were observed with the Multichannel Subtractive Double Pass Spectrograph operating at Meudon (MSDP), while the UV and X-ray emissions were observed respectively with the UV Spectrograph (UVSP) and HXIS instruments on the SMM satellite. These ejections are not related directly to flares but are located in active regions near sunspots. As the magnetic field is frozen in the matter, the study of the velocity field leads to the geometry of the magnetic structures and the temporal evolution of the magnetic-field lines. Ejections of matter recur often with a period of 10 to 20 minutes. In C IV, the bright loops coincide with the H-alpha surge but are more extended. Associated with the events are either X-ray emission or type-III bursts.

Deep FIFO Surge Buffer

First-in/first-out (FIFO) temporarily stores short surges of data generated by data-acquisition system at excessively high rate and releases data at lower rate suitable for processing by computer. Size and complexity reduced while capacity enhanced by use of newly developed, sophisticated integrated circuits and by "byte-folding" scheme doubling effective depth and data rate.

Designs for surge immunity in critical electronic facilities

In recent years, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) embarked on a program replacing older tube type electronic equipment with newer solid state equipment. This replacement program dramatically increased the susceptibility of the FAA's facilities to lightning related damages. The proposal is presented of techniques which may be employed to lessen the susceptibility of new FAA electronic facility designs to failures resulting from lightning related surges and transients as well as direct strikes. The general concept espoused is one of a consistent system approach employing both perimeter and internal protection. It compares the technique presently employed to reduce electronic noise with other techniques which reduce noise while lowering susceptibility to lightning related damage. It is anticipated that these techniques will be employed in the design of an Air Traffic Control Tower in a high isokeraunic area. This facility would be subjected to rigorous monitoring over a multi-year period to provide quantitative data hopefully supporting the advantage of this design.

Flood surge through the Lunae Planum Outflow Complex, Mars

It is shown that the Maja outflow on Mars was released as a catastrophic outburst from Juventae Chasma. The flood surge traveled the first two-thirds of its length as a semiconfined sheetflood in a broad trough formed by the eastward-sloping Lunae Planum surface and the Xanthe Terra highlands to the east. At its northernmost extent, the flow ponded on the northern Lunae Planum surface. As the flow impounded on the upper Maja lake, waters rose to spill over the Xanthe Terra revetment onto the lower Chryse Planitia surface. The initial spillover crossed Xanthe Terra as sheetflood flow that muted topography over which it passed. The sheetflood was rapidly broken by the irregular topography to cut a complex series of anastomosing channels. A few main channels on eventually captured most of the drainage and local ponds formed in breached craters and irregular basins. The Maja Valles canyon eventually captured the remaining flow at the expense of all other channels.
