ASME Code Qualification Plan for LPBF 316 SS

This report describes a plan to qualify laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) 316 stainless steel for use with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code Section III, Division 5 rules for metallic components in high temperature nuclear reactors. Accomplishing this goal would make the material and manufacturing process available to vendors for inclusion in the next generation of advanced, high temperature reactors. The general approach adopted here is to treat LPBF 316 as if it was a completely new material and to develop a plan to qualify the material according to the current ASME practices. One key goal of this work is to explore and develop accelerated qualification approaches that might reduce the time required to qualify new materials by reducing the need for long term testing. However, the qualification plan here does not employ any accelerated qualification approaches to provide a limiting, bounding description of the number, duration, and types of testing required to qualify LPBF 316 without such techniques and to describe a comprehensive dataset that could be used to explore and validate accelerated qualification approaches in the future. The report addresses the fundamental challenges to qualifying Advanced Manufacturing (AM) materials for high temperature applications and summarizes the ASME Section III qualification process as well as current efforts to qualify LBPF and DED 316 for low temperature applications. The report then discusses specific issues, both material and logistical, related to qualifying PBF 316 steel. The final chapters of the report describe a complete test plan designed to generate sufficient data to qualify the material as well as a data management plan for how to store and manage the data to eventually provide the test data packaged needed to qualify the material with ASME.

Preliminary prediction of long-term aging and creep behavior of AM 316 SS

This report describes the development of initial mechanism models for the long term behavior of additively manufactured (AM), laser powder-bed fusion 316H stainless steel under the conditions expected in future advanced nuclear reactors. These models focus on key features of the material microstructure and response that differ from the conventionally-manufactured wrought material. Specifically, the report describes the development of models to capture the unique response of the AM material focusing on irradiation creep and swelling, the effect of internal stress, for example caused by dislocation structure, on precipitation, and the effect of the AM grain and dislocation structure on the macroscale creep and thermal aging behavior. This single mechanism models represent progress towards a complete, physics-based model for the long-term material behavior as well as elucidate key differences in the AM material behavior, when compared to the better-understood, conventionally-manufactured 316H.

Mechanistic Modeling of Creep and Aging for Time Extrapolation in LPBF 316 SS - LANL

A polycrystal constitutive model was extended to quantify the effects heterogeneity in the microstructure, porosity, and internal stresses on the mechanical response (creep, tensile) of 316H steel processed by additive manufacturing. The starting point is a recently developed and fully calibrated advanced microstructuresensitive mechanistic constitutive model fit to literature data pertaining to conventionally processed steels. The model is embedded within the full field fast Fourier transform framework (LApx) and several hundred simulations were performed. Synthetic microstructures with different grain aspect ratios were generated using the Neper package to study the role of grain morphology on the mechanical responses. The effect of initial cell interior dislocation density, cell-wall density, precipitate content, porosity, and internal stresses on creep rates are quantified for different polycrystalline microstructures. The study allowed to prospectively quantify the role of distinct features of the microstructure on the mechanical response under tension and creep loading scenarios. Critically it is found that minor anisotropies in the tensile response of samples, emanating from the aspect ratio of grains correlated into significant differences in creep rate as a function of loading directions. The study also allows to identify initial microstructure porosities below which the materials response only moderately degraded by the initial microstructure.

Sodium Chemistry Assessment and Initiation of Sodium Exposure Experiment on A709 Commercial Heats and LPBF 316H SS

This report documents sodium chemistry characterization and the initiation of forced‑convection sodium exposure experiments for two structural materials for sodium‑cooled fast reactors (SFRs): Alloy 709 (solution‑annealed and with an additional 775 °C/10 h precipitation treatment) and laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) 316H stainless steel tensile specimens printed with an as‑built surface condition. The sodium exposure experiment was conducted in a forced‑convection sodium loop with two vessels operated at 550 °C and 600 °C, and a cold trap maintained at <130 °C. Carbon activity in sodium was quantified using a nickel‑foil equilibration method. Initial post‑exposure evaluation after ~1,000 h indicates negligible thickness change for Alloy 709 and a small but measurable mass decrease. To isolate thermal effects from sodium effects, parallel thermal‑aging experiments were performed on Alloy 709 at 550 °C and 600 °C. Baseline tensile tests at room temperature, 550 °C, and 600 °C show expected reduction in strength with increasing temperature and serration tensile curves at elevated temperatures, consistent with dynamic strain aging. After 3,000 h thermal aging, Alloy 709 exhibits modest strengthening and reduced ductility at 550 °C. Together, these results establish the loop chemistry conditions and provide the initial corrosion and mechanical property results for ongoing long‑duration sodium exposure of Alloy 709 and LPBF 316H stainless steel.

Corrosion of SS 316, Inconel 617, Inconel 625 in molten chloride salt with emphasis on the speciation of Cr, Ni, and Co in molten salt matrix by XAFS

Dr. Hartmann’ report summarizes the corrosion behavior of materials used in the construction and operation of molten salt reactors which is is of great interest to the molten salt reactor (MSR) community. In the present study we intent to decipher the very elemental phenomena on the corrosion of austenitic chromium-containing stainless steel SS316, as well as Inconel 625 and ASME-coded high temperature Alloy (Inconel) 617. We initiated and are in continuation of conducting ampoule type corrosion testing at 550 °C and 650 °C to determine chromium diffusivity and the related activation energy as well as the speciation of the corrosion products.

SS 433 - Intensive 4 month light curves

Photometry covering 100 nights during 1979 July-November is reported, in an unfiltered band (effectively 5200-8000 A), in a V band, and with a few measures in B. Correlation with the 13 day period of Crampton, Cowley, and Hutchings is found in the form of a double-peaked light curve. A more tentative connection with the 164 day 'precession' period suggested by a broad light minimum near a critical phase in the long cycle is found.

Baseband-processed SS-TDMA communication system architecture and design concepts

The architecture and system design for a commercial satellite communications system planned for the 1990's was developed by Motorola for NASA's Lewis Research Center. The system provides data communications between individual users via trunking and customer premises service terminals utilizing a central switching satellite operating in a time-division multiple-access (TDMA) mode. The major elements of the design incorporating baseband processing include: demand-assigned multiple access reservation protocol, spectral utilization, system synchronization, modulation technique and forward error control implementation. Motorola's baseband processor design, which is being proven in a proof-of-concept advanced technology development, will perform data regeneration and message routing for individual users on-board the spacecraft.

Nodding motions of accretion rings and disks - A short-term period in SS 433

It is pointed out that accretion disks and rings in mass transfer binaries have been observed spectroscopically and calculated theoretically for many years. The present investigation is partly based on the availability of several years of spectroscopic observations of the Doppler shifts of the moving lines in SS433. A formalism is presented to compute frequencies and amplitudes of short-term 'nodding' motions in precessing accretion disks in close binary systems. This formalism is applied to an analysis of the moving-line Doppler shifts in SS433. The 35d X-ray cycle of Hercules X-1 is also discussed. In the considered model, the companion star exerts a gravitational torque on the disk rim. Averaged over the binary orbit, this yields a steady torque which results in the mean driven counterprecession of the disk.

Development of a microwave 20 x 20 switch matrix for 30/20 GHz SS-TDMA application

The design and fabrication of a 3-8 GHz, 20 x 20 Satellite Switched-Time Division Multiple Access IF switch matrix applicable to a 30/20 GHz communications satellite are described. An assessment of switch architecture in 1980 concluded that the GaAs FET-based coupled crossbar switch matrix, incorporating high speed CMOS LSI logic for switch crosspoint addressing, would be the optimum technology available for communications satellite switching by 1982. This assessment was based on such factors as switching speed, bandwidth, off-state isolation, and reliability, over a 10-year mission life. A proof-of-concept model's construction and testing are presented.

20 x 20 IF switch matrix for SS-TDMA systems

Satellite-switched TDMA, an effective means for the increasing of communication satellite channel capacity and the improvement of system flexibility, requires that the spacecraft carry an IF switch matrix in order to provide interconnectivity among multiple beam antennas. Attention is presently given to the development of a 20 x 20 IF switch matrix for the NASA 30/20 GHz communications satellite which will provide a 2.5 GHz bandwidth at C-band frequencies with a switching speed of 10 nsec. Switch matrix architecture, switching device characteristic, and distribution control unit design practices are discussed, together with switch matrix reliability.

Hardware realization of a baseband processor for a SS-FDMA/TDMA/DAMA system

Hardware implementation of the NASA ACTS baseband processor is described which achieves the system message data handling performance required to perform satellite switching of high-rate baseband data. The hardware meets payload specifications for size, weight, and power. Hardware redundancy applied to critical paths in several functional areas insures that the reliability and life expectancy requirements are fulfilled. The remote reprogrammability of the processor message data handling and routing functions provides system flexibility for dynamic reconfiguration during rapidly changing traffic loads.
