One-Component, Vinyl-Functional Fluorosilicone Pastes for Direct Ink Write Additive Manufacturing

In this study, one-component (“all-in-one”) fluorosilicone pastes specifically designed for application in direct ink write (DIW) additive manufacturing (AM) have been developed. They consist of vinyl-functional, methyltrifluoropropyl-containing (MeTfpS) terpolysiloxane base polymer(s), hydrosilyl-functional cross-linker(s), UV-sensitive hydrosilylation catalyst, thixotropic additive, and trimethylsilylated fumed silica filler, with other additives that are optional. Their base polymers were completely amorphous and linear, with molecular weights (M n ) ranging from approximately 7000 to 50,000 and specifically targeted for the viscosity range ideal for DIW. These polymers were prepared by anionic ring-opening polymerizations (A-ROP) of appropriate mixtures of cyclic siloxanes initiated by oligomeric, difunctional tetramethylammonium silanolate in the presence of a difunctional tetramethyldivinyldisiloxane end-blocker and molecular weight regulator. Two series of these terpolymers were prepared: one containing 5 mol % MeTfpS repeat units but varying degrees of polymerization (DP) from 80 to 600 and the other containing 5, 10, and 15 mol % MeTfpS at a constant DP of 600. All polymers contained mostly random distributions of MeTfpS repeat units. The pastes were prepared by speed-mixing, ready for use in DIW, they exhibited ideal thixotropy, long-term (over a year) rheological stability, and can be quickly (within seconds) and permanently cured by room-temperature, UV-activated hydrosilylation in air. The resulting elastomers showed base polymer molecular weight- and composition-dependent stress-induced crystallization (SIC) at higher molecular weights and lower trifluoropropyl contents and tunable Shore A hardness (30A–40A) typical for soft polysiloxane rubbers. Preliminary DIW tests indicated excellent printability with high precision of printed shapes and clearly present these one-component pastes as prime candidates for simple and practical printing of silicone elastomer objects.

Topological Effects Near Order–Disorder Transitions in Symmetric Diblock Copolymer Melts

The effects of polymer chain topology on the order–disorder transition of symmetric AB diblock copolymer melts are studied using coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations. Specifically, we compared chain conformations near the lamellar-disordered transition in melts of symmetric (i.e., 50–50) AB diblock copolymers of linear chains, rings, and trefoil knots at the same chain lengths. The order (lamellar)–disorder transition temperature and the domain sizes both shifted to lower values with the introduction of topological constraints, leading to the following sequence: linear chains > rings > trefoil knots. Furthermore, investigation of the polymer chain conformations in terms of their radii of gyration, their writhe values (a measure for the degree of intertwining of a chain around itself), and their Jones polynomials (a method to measure entanglement of curves) showed that linear chains and rings remained stretched, while knots were stretched and tightened in disordered melts close to the lamellar-disorder transition. This work highlights chain topology as an important factor in affecting microphase separation in block copolymers.

Mechanically robust and superior conductive n-type polymer binders for high-performance micro-silicon anodes in lithium-ion batteries

Compared with nanostructured silicon (Si), the Si microparticle (SiMP) has more commercial prospects due to its low cost. However, SiMPs suffer from unavoidable fracture during electrochemical cycling owing to their significant volume change. Here we develop a series of novel n-type conductive polymer binders (CPBs) for SiMP anodes in lithium-ion batteries owing to their superior properties. Extraordinary electrochemical performance of cells with such unique binders could be achieved, which is because these designed polymers contain electron-withdrawing oxadiazole ring groups and easily ionizable sulfonate polar groups, exhibiting excellent ionic conductivity, outstanding wettability to the electrolyte, and improved electronic conductivity after doping. Moreover, the coexistence of rigid and flexible chains enables them to have exceptional strength and ductility. Besides, a unique electrochromic approach has been utilized to investigate the energy gap of the CPBs in n-doping states. The ionic and electronic conductivities of prepared CPBs in an eigenstate and n-doping state have been systematically studied by the electrochemical method, filling the current research gap in this field. Due to the high conductivity of b-POD, the capacity of SiMPs (4200 mA h g –1 ) can be almost entirely released during the first cycle of discharge, while the SiMP anodes prepared with the PAALi or CMC binder show a much lower initial capacity. Here, the high conductivity of b-POD also endows it with better cycling performance than non-conductive binders especially at high current densities, demonstrating its excellent fast-charging ability. More essentially, this work provides polymer binders without any intricate structural designs to obtain high-performance SiMP batteries, significantly enhancing their practical applications.

One Step Block-like Copolymers from an Upcycled Monomer Using Ring-Opening Metathesis Polymerization

Block-like copolymers can be readily synthesized in one step using monomers with widely separated reactivity ratios. Here, we show that trans,trans,trans-1,5,9-cyclododecatriene (CDT), produced from polybutadiene via cyclodepolymerization (CDP), undergoes gradient copolymerization via ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) with a selected norbornene monomer to produce a block-like copolymer that exhibits bulk nanophase separation and excellent thermomechanical performance. These data highlight a new ROMP copolymerization system with a sharp compositional drift and introduce a simple pathway to convert waste plastic into a valuable building block for high-value thermoplastic materials.

A General Autofluorescence Method to Characterize Polymerization Progress

An autofluorescence technique to characterize polymerization progress in real time/in line was developed, which functioned in the absence of typical fluorogenic groups on the monomer or polymer. The monomer dicyclopentadiene and polymer polydicyclopentadiene are hydrocarbons that lack traditional functional groups for fluorescence spectroscopy. Here, the autofluorescence of formulations containing this monomer and polymer during ruthenium-catalyzed ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) was harnessed for reaction monitoring. The methods fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP) and here-developed fluorescence lifetime recovery after photobleaching (FLRAP) characterized polymerization progress in these native systems—without requiring exogenous fluorophore. (Auto)fluorescence lifetime recovery changes during polymerization correlated linearly to degree of cure, providing a quantitative link with reaction progress. These changing signals also provided relative rates of background polymerization, enabling comparison of 10 different catalyst–inhibitor-stabilized formulations. Multiple-well analysis demonstrated suitability for future high-throughput evaluation of formulations for thermosets. Furthermore, the central concept of the combined autofluorescence and FLRAP/FRAP method may be extendable to monitoring other polymerization reactions previously overlooked for lack of an obvious fluorescence handle.

Durable and Highly Selective Ion Transport of a Sulfonated Diels Alder Poly(phenylene) for Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries

In order to improve the durability and ion selectivity of a hydrocarbon membrane for vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs) a polymer was rationally designed with an external hydrophobic shell and internal hydrophilic core. The polymer was designed to prevent hydrophilic polymer chain aggregation by functionalizing the external polymer shell with hydrophobic side chains and attaching acid moieties onto the polymer backbone. The hydrophobic shell is the result of pentafluorobenzoyl group functionalization on the pendent aryl rings in a Diels Alder poly(phenylene) backbone. The internal polymer chain contains sulfonic acid moieties to impart hydrophilic character. The physical and electrochemical characteristics of the membrane were systematically studied and compared with widely used Nafion-212. The synthesized membranes were found to be superior to Nafion-212 not only in terms of lower vanadium ion permeability (4.25 x 10 -8 vs. Nafion-212: 6.0 x 10 -6 cm 2 min -1 ) but also in higher VRFB performance (EE = 89% and vs. Nafion-212: 85.5% at 40 mA/cm 2 ). The membrane also showed over three times higher capacity retention than Nafion-212 (0.075 % vs. 0.25 % capacity loss per cycle respectively) and excellent ex situ and in situ chemical stability.

Direct ladderization of cyclooctatetraene-containing, processable conjugated ladder polymers from annulated bis-zirconacyclopentadienes

Conjugated ladder polymers (CLPs) are difficult yet captivating synthetic targets due to their fully unsaturated fused backbones. Inherent challenges associated with their synthesis often lead to low yields, structural defects, and insoluble products. Here a new method to form CLPs is demonstrated, utilizing a high-yielding dimerization of annulated zirconacyclopentadienes to form cyclooctatetraene (COT) monomer units. The resulting COT-containing polymers form rapidly in a single ladderization step from the bis-zirconacyclopentadiene precursors and display M n up to 29.7 kg mol -1 . The polymers represent rare examples of CLPs with negatively curved rings, resulting in the observation of unusual properties. The rigid tub-shaped COT units embedded in the backbone imbue the polymers with microporosity, exhibiting BET surface areas up to 555 m 2 g -1 . Additionally, the remarkable solubility of these CLPs in organic solvents enables the fabrication of thin films showcasing high dielectric performance with a discharged energy density as high as 6.54 J cm -3 at 650 MV m -1 .

Benzimidazolone-Dioxazine Pigments-Based Conjugated Polymers for Organic Field-Effect Transistor

Molecules based on benzimidazolone-dioxazine are known as blue/violet pigments and have been commercialized for decades. However, unfavorable solubility limits the application of these structures as building blocks of conjugated polymers despite their low band gaps. Herein, a series of donor–acceptor conjugated polymers containing soluble benzimidazolone-dioxazine structures as the acceptors and oligothiophene as donors are synthesized and investigated. With increasing numbers of thiophene rings, the steric hindrance diminishes and high molecular weight polymers can be achieved, leading to an improved performance in organic field effect transistor devices. The hole mobility of polymers with three to six thiophene units is in the order of 10 -1 cm2 V -1 s -1 . Among all the polymers, polymer P3 with three thiophene units between benzimidazolone-dioxazine structures shows the best hole mobility of 0.4 cm2 V -1 s -1 . Grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering results reveal that the high mobility of organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) can be accredited by matched donor–acceptor packing in the solid thin films.

Joining technique for in-oven/autoclave molds manufactured by large scale polymer additive manufacturing

Large scale additive manufacturing (AM) of fiber-reinforced polymer composites has gained traction in the mold and die community over the last decade, largely due to reduced material cost and lead time. However, limitations in mold size remain present due to printer volume constraints and costs associated with large format machines. Here, this paper describes a method for producing additively manufactured polymer molds in segments with an O-ring joint design, which can be machined and subsequently assembled for autoclave applications. The developed joining mechanism allows for maintaining the vacuum integrity during the cure cycle while accounting for the anisotropic nature of the additively manufactured polymer molds. Over a range of tested temperatures, 20–200 °C, the multi-part mold joining design was able to achieve full vacuum of ∼73.7 cmHg (29 inchHg) and maintain a vacuum integrity with vacuum losses less than 1.5 cmHg/5min (0.6 inchHg).

Effects of high-pressure hydrogen exposure on filler-elastomer adhesion

Elastomers are known to gain enhanced mechanical properties through compounding with nanosized filler particles such as silica or carbon black. Filler dispersion and filler-polymer interfacial strength are key contributing factors to this improvement. The interfacial strength is critical to part lifetime in pressurized gas sealing applications such as O-rings, where weak binding between the filler particle and polymer matrix can lead to internal void structures. With the aim to build a fundamental understanding of precursors to pressurized hydrogen-induced failure in elastomers, we use all-atom molecular dynamics simulations to study the impact of hydrogen oversaturation on filler-polymer interaction strength. We systematically study the interface between a commonly used elastomer, ethylene-propylene-diene monomer (EPDM) and silica by varying gas concentration, crosslink density, and surface chemistry. Our simulations predict that decompression leads to a localization of excess gas near the interface. In conclusion, we demonstrate that this localized gas can weaken interfacial adhesion and quantify the interaction using thermodynamic approaches.

Thermally Induced Structural Transitions in Epoxy Thermoset Polymer Networks and Their Spectroscopic Responses

The polymer network structure of epoxy thermosets plays a significant role in its final material properties. However, the effects of mild thermal exposure on these network structures are poorly studied. In this work, wide-angle X-ray scattering was used to investigate the polymer network structure of two epoxy thermosets: homopolymerized bisphenol A (BPA) epoxy resin and BPA epoxy resin cured with a polyether amine hardener (BPA/T-403). Using density functional theory and wide-angle X-ray scattering, insights into the polymer network structure were obtained. Diffraction features were determined to originate from hardener-to-hardener molecular distance, perpendicular π–π stacking of aromatic p-phenylene rings, and the average carbon–carbon distance in the polymer. Thermal exposure was found to permanently alter these structural features for both thermosets, with an increase in the π–π stacking distance. Homopolymerized BPA had an additional decrease in the hardener-to-hardener distance. These structural alterations were found to be detectable using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy, with changes in the hardener-to-hardener distance having the largest variations in the resulting spectra specifically at the aromatic and ether frequencies.

Synthesis and Blending of Two Poly(ethylene- co -vinyl alcohol) Polymers with Mixed 1,2-Diol Stereochemistry

Parallel pathways for the postpolymerization modification of double bonds in a polycyclooctene (PCOE) backbone generate vicinal 1,2-diol-containing polymers with mixed but opposite stereochemistry, depending on the trans:cis ratio of the C═C in PCOE. Beginning from the same batch of PCOE, epoxidation and subsequent ring-opening with sulfuric acid and water produce a polymer with the majority erythro diols, whereas an osmium-catalyzed dihydroxylation results in diols in the majority threo orientations. These postpolymerization modification approaches enable access to previously unexplored polymers with a mixture of erythro and threo diols, offering tunable diol stereochemistry to tailor material properties. The majority erythro diols lead to hexagonal crystallites with higher melting temperatures and overall crystallinity when compared to the majority threo diols that form monoclinic crystallites. When blended, the two diastereomers phase separate as evidenced by distinct melting endotherms and crystal structures corresponding to the two component polymers, suggesting a route to tune the barrier or mechanical properties. Furthermore, this investigation synthesized polymers with mixed stereochemical diols and elucidated the thermal and morphological properties of regioregular linear poly(ethylene-co-vinyl alcohols) and their blends.

Chemically Recyclable Analogs of Styrene–Butadiene Copolymers Enabling Perfectly Linear Ethylene–Styrene Materials with Random Phenyl Distribution

Copolymerization of cyclopentene (CP) and 4-phenylcyclopentene (4PCP) at a full range of comonomer feed ratios is reported using Ru-based ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) yielding homogeneous copolymers analogous to poly(styrene-ran-1,4-butadiene) and poly(ethylene-ran-styrene) copolymers following hydrogenation under mild conditions. In all cases, total monomer conversions of 86%–92% yielded copolymers with compositions within 4% of monomer feeds. Analysis of equilibrium copolymerization thermodynamics, rarely performed on two cycloolefin monomers with low ring strain energies, provides rational design strategies for negotiating two monomers with different equilibrium monomer concentrations. Inverse-gated decoupled 13 C NMR analysis of dyad sequences on the resulting copolymer microstructures concludes a near-random distribution of comonomer units. The copolymers produced from ROMP have number-average molar masses up to 60 kg mol –1 , moderate dispersities (1.5 ± 0.1), and high trans olefin content (86% ± 2%) while glass-transitions temperatures follow the Fox equation and span the full range between homopolymer extremities of PCP (−96 °C) and P4PCP (17 °C). Unlike most prevulcanized elastomers, these materials undergo facile chemical recycling to monomer, producing complete ring-closing metathesis depolymerization (RCMD) of the polymer back to the CP comonomers. Quantitative olefin hydrogenation produced perfectly linear polyethylene with 4%–16% of the backbone carbons containing a phenyl pendant, analogous to ES copolymers with up to 71.5% w/w styrene units but with random distribution of the aromatic pendants. Thermal properties of these materials are discussed, which span from semicrystalline to amorphous, and with T g values notably less than the reported ES copolymer analogs at similar compositions.

Porphene and porphite as porphyrin analogs of graphene and graphite

Two-dimensional materials have unusual properties and promise applications in nanoelectronics, spintronics, photonics, (electro)catalysis, separations, and elsewhere. Most are inorganic and their properties are difficult to tune. Here we report the preparation of Zn porphene, a member of the previously only hypothetical organic metalloporphene family. Similar to graphene, these also are fully conjugated two-dimensional polymers, but are composed of fused metalloporphyrin rings. Zn porphene is synthesized on water surface by two-dimensional oxidative polymerization of a Langmuir layer of Zn porphyrin with K 2 IrCl 6 , reminiscent of known one-dimensional polymerization of pyrroles. It is transferable to other substrates and bridges μm-sized pits. Contrary to previous theoretical predictions of metallic conductivity, it is a p-type semiconductor due to a predicted Peierls distortion of its unit cell from square to rectangular, analogous to the appearance of bond-length alternation in antiaromatic molecules. The observed reversible insertion of various metal ions, possibly carrying a fifth or sixth ligand, promises tunability and even patterning of circuits on an atomic canvas without removing any π centers from conjugation.

Videos of Chemically Activated Frontal Polymerization of Thermosets

Video recordings of the frontal ring-opening metathesis polymerization (FROMP) of thermoset polymer specimens in 10mm glass test tubes were collected in order to measure the front speed resulting from varied front initiation methods. Maximum front temperature was also measured. Polymerization resins comprised of dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) with 5 wt% 5-ethylidene-2-norbornene (ENB) added, grubbs’ second generation catalyst, and tributyl phosphite (TBP) inhibitor (8000:1:1 monomer:initiator:inhibitor ratio). Polymerization fronts were triggered using concentrated solutions of grubbs’ third generation catalyst in various solvents.

Polymers depolymerizable by metathesis of a cleavable unit

Novel polymers are depolymerizable by metathesis of a cleavable unit. As an example, a series of linear and crosslinked polyurethanes were prepared that can be selectively depolymerized under mild conditions. Two unique polyols were synthesized bearing unsaturated units in a configuration designed to favor ring-closing metathesis to five- and six-membered cycloalkenes. These polyols were co-polymerized with toluene diisocyanate to generate linear polyurethanes and trifunctional hexamethylene- and diphenylmethane-based isocyanates to generate crosslinked polyurethanes. The polyol design is such that the ring-closing metathesis reaction cleaves the backbone of the polymer chain. Upon exposure to dilute solutions of Grubbs' catalyst under ambient conditions, the polyurethanes were rapidly depolymerized to low molecular weight, soluble products bearing vinyl and cycloalkene functionalities. These functionalities enabled further re-polymerization by traditional strategies for polymerization of double bonds. This general approach can be expanded to develop a range of chemically recyclable condensation polymers that are readily depolymerized by orthogonal metathesis chemistry.
