In situ observation of the atomic shuffles during the {${{11}}\bar{{{2}}}{{1}}$} twinning in hexagonal close-packed rhenium

Twinning, on par with dislocations, is critically required in plastic deformation of hexagonal close-packed crystals at low temperatures. In contrast to that in cubic-structured crystals, twinning in hexagonal close-packed crystals requires atomic shuffles in addition to shear. Though the twinning shear that is carried by twinning dislocations has been captured for decades, direct experimental observation of the atomic shuffles, especially when the shuffling mode is not unique and does not confine to the plane of shear, remains a formidable challenge to date. Here, by using in-situ transmission electron microscopy, we directly capture the atomic mechanism of the {${{11}}\bar{{{2}}}{{1}}$} twinning in hexagonal close packed rhenium nanocrystals. Results show that the {${{11}}\bar{{{2}}}{{1}}$} twinning is dominated by the ($\textbf{b}$ 1/2 , h 1/2 ) twinning disconnections. In contrast to conventional expectations, the atomic shuffles accompanying the twinning disconnections proceed on alternative basal planes along 1/6 {${{1\bar1}}{{{0}}}{{0}}$} , which may be attributed to the free surface in nanocrystal samples, leading to a lack of mirror symmetry across the {${{11}}\bar{{{2}}}{{1}}$} twin boundary.

Synthesis and molecular structure of perhalogenated rhenium-oxo corroles

Abstract As part of our efforts to develop rhenium-oxo corroles as photosensitizers for oxygen sensing and photodynamic therapy, we investigated the potential β -perhalogenation of five ReO meso -tris( para -X-phenyl)corroles, Re[T p XPC](O) (X = CF 3 , H, F, CH 3 , and OCH 3 ), with elemental chlorine and bromine. With Cl 2 , β -octachlorinated products Re[Cl 8 T p XPC](O) were rapidly obtained for X = CF 3 , H, and CH 3 , but X = OCH 3 resulted in overchlorination on the meso -aryl groups. Full β -octabromination proved slower relative to Cu and Ir corroles, but the desired Re[Br 8 T p XPC](O) products were finally obtained for X = H and F after a week at room temperature. For X = CH 3 and OCH 3 , these conditions led to undecabrominated products Re[Br 11 T p XPC](O). Compared to the β -unsubstituted starting materials, the β -octahalogenated products were found to exhibit sharp 1 H NMR signals at room temperature, indicating that the aryl groups are locked in place by the β -halogens, and substantially redshifted Soret and Q bands. Single-crystal X-ray structures of Re[Cl 8 T p CF 3 PC](O), Re[Cl 8 T p CH 3 PC](O), and Re[Br 8 T p FPC](O) revealed mild saddling for one Cl 8 structure and the Br 8 structure. These structural variations, however, appear too insignificant to explain the slowness of the β -octabromination protocols, which seems best attributed to the deactivating influence of the high-valent Re center.

Neutral rhenium( i ) tricarbonyl complexes with sulfur-donor ligands: anti-proliferative activity and cellular localization

Rhenium(I) tricarbonyl complexes are widely studied for their cell imaging properties and anti-cancer and anti-microbial activities, but the complexes with S-donor ligands remain relatively unexplored. A series of six fac-[Re(NN)(CO) 3 (SR)] complexes, where (NN) is 2,2'-bipyridyl (bipy) or 1,10-phenanthroline (phen), and RSH is a series of thiocarboxylic acid methyl esters, have been synthesized and characterized. Cellular uptake and anti-proliferative activities of these complexes in human breast cancer cell lines (MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7) were generally lower than those of the previously described fac-[Re(NN)(CO) 3 (OH 2 )]+ complexes; however, one of the complexes, fac-[Re(CO) 3 (phen)(SC(Ph)CH 2 C(O)OMe)] (3b), was active (IC 50 ~ 10 μM at 72 h treatment) in thiol-depleted MDA-MB-231 cells. Moreover, unlike fac-[Re(CO) 3 (phen)(OH 2 )]+, this complex did not lose activity in the presence of extracellular glutathione. Taken together these properties show promise for further development of 3b and its analogues as potential anti-cancer drugs for co-treatment with thiol-depleting agents. Conversely, the stable and non-toxic complex, fac-[Re(bipy)(CO) 3 (SC(Me)C(O)OMe)] (1a), predominantly localized in the lysosomes of MDA-MB-231 cells, as shown by live cell confocal microscopy (λ ex = 405 nm, λ em = 470–570 nm). It is strongly localized in a subset of lysosomes (25 μM Re, 4 h treatment), as shown by co-localization with a Lysotracker dye. Longer treatment times with 1a (25 μM Re for 48 h) resulted in partial migration of the probe into the mitochondria, as shown by co-localization with a Mitotracker dye. These properties make complex 1a an attractive target for further development as an organelle probe for multimodal imaging, including phosphorescence, carbonyl tag for vibrational spectroscopy, and Re tag for X-ray fluorescence microscopy.

Exploring the hardness and high-pressure behavior of osmium and ruthenium-doped rhenium diboride solid solutions

Rhenium diboride (ReB 2 ) exhibits high differential strain due to its puckered boron sheets that impede shear deformation. Here, we demonstrate the use of solid solution formation to enhance the Vickers hardness and differential strain of ReB 2 . ReB 2 -structured solid solutions (Re 0.98 Os 0.02 B 2 and Re 0.98 Ru 0.02 B 2 , noted as “ReOsB 2 ” and “ReRuB 2 ”) were synthesized via arc-melting from the pure elements. In-situ high-pressure radial x-ray diffraction was performed in the diamond anvil cell to study the incompressibility and lattice strain of ReOsB 2 and ReRuB 2 up to ~56 GPa. Both solid solutions exhibit higher incompressibility and differential strain than pure ReB 2 . However, while all lattice planes are strengthened by doping osmium (Os) into the ReB 2 structure, only the weakest ReB 2 lattice plane is enhanced with ruthenium (Ru). These results are in agreement with the Vickers hardness measurements of the two systems, where higher hardness was observed in ReOsB 2 . The combination of high-pressure studies with experimentally observed hardness data provides lattice specific information about the strengthening mechanisms behind the intrinsic hardness enhancement of the ReB 2 system.

Role of weak interlayer coupling in ultrafast exciton-exciton annihilation in two-dimensional rhenium dichalcogenides

Strong interactions between excitons are a characteristic feature of two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors, determining important excitonic properties, such as exciton lifetime, coherence, and photon-emission efficiency. Rhenium disulfide (ReS 2 ), a member of the 2D transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) family, has recently attracted great attention due to its unique excitons that exhibit excellent polarization selectivity and coherence features. However, an in-depth understanding of exciton-exciton interactions in ReS 2 is still lacking. In this work, we used ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy to study exciton-exciton interactions in monolayer (1L), bilayer (2L), and triple layer ReS 2 . Additionally, we directly measure the rate of exciton-exciton annihilation, a representative Auger-type interaction between excitons. It decreases with increasing layer number, as observed in other 2D TMDs. However, while other TMDs exhibit a sharp weakening of exciton-exciton annihilation between 1L and 2L, such behavior was not observed in ReS 2 . We attribute this distinct feature in ReS 2 to the relatively weak interlayer coupling, which prohibits a substantial change in the electronic structure when the thickness varies. This work not only highlights the unique excitonic properties of ReS 2 but also provides novel insight into the thickness dependence of exciton-exciton interactions in 2D systems.

Breaking up CO 2 through pressure-induced redox reaction with rhenium

We present results from density-functional-theory (DFT) based molecular dynamics simulations of fluid mixtures of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and rhenium (Re) metal at pressures up to 45 GPa and a temperature of 4000 K. Covalently-bonded carbon chains form as a result of a redox reaction between CO 2 and Re, whereas a pure CO 2 fluid is stable against decomposition at the same conditions. Furthermore, these findings have implications in reducing CO 2 by pressure-induced redox reactions with transition metals, which may play a role in CO 2 destruction and carbon storage as related to possible solutions to the current climate crisis.

Experimental and Computational Studies on Superhard Material Rhenium Diboride under Ultrahigh Pressures

An emerging class of superhard materials for extreme environment applications are compounds formed by heavy transition metals with light elements. In this work, ultrahigh pressure experiments on transition metal rhenium diboride (ReB 2 ) were carried out in a diamond anvil cell under isothermal and non-hydrostatic compression. Two independent high-pressure experiments were carried out on ReB 2 for the first time up to a pressure of 241 GPa (volume compression V/V 0 = 0.731 ± 0.004), with platinum as an internal pressure standard in X-ray diffraction studies. The hexagonal phase of ReB 2 was stable under highest pressure, and the anisotropy between the a-axis and c-axis compression increases with pressure to 241 GPa. The measured equation of state (EOS) above the yield stress of ReB 2 is well represented by the bulk modulus K 0 = 364 GPa and its first pressure derivative K 0 ´ = 3.53. Corresponding density-functional-theory (DFT) simulations of the EOS and elastic constants agreed well with the experimental data. DFT results indicated that ReB 2 becomes more ductile with enhanced tendency towards metallic bonding under compression. The DFT results also showed strong crystal anisotropy up to the maximum pressure under study. The pressure-enhanced electron density distribution along the Re and B bond direction renders the material highly incompressible along the c-axis. Our study helps to establish the fundamental basis for anisotropic compression of ReB 2 under ultrahigh pressures
