An experiment protocol for a search for radio signals of extraterrestrial intelligent origin in the presence of man-made radio frequency sources

Some aspects of signal extraction in a microwave search for evidence of extraterrestrial intelligence are examined. Parametric relations are summarized which are applicable to a microwave search of constrained duration that employs FFT spectrum-analyzer receivers, with sensitivity enhancement by spectrum accumulation and detection by a threshold criterion. Three types of natural and man-made false alarms are identified, the probability of false alarm in a single data channel is computed, and the implications of false alarms for a constant-beamwidth sky survey are considered. It is shown that the key to an efficient search is the prompt and unambiguous elimination of false alarms. An experimental protocol is suggested which eliminates spurious signals primarily through procedural techniques involving antenna repointing, delayed repeated observations, and storage of particular historical parameters for suspect signals.

Satellite-aided mobile radio concepts study: Concept definition of a satellite-aided mobile and personal radio communication system

The satellite system requires the use of a large satellite antenna and spacecraft array power of about 12 kW or more depending on the operating frequency. Technology developments needed include large offset reflector multibeam antennas, satellite electrical power sybsystems providing greater than 12 kW of power, signal switching hardware, and linearized efficient solid state amplifiers for the satellite-aided mobile band. Presently there is no frequency assignment for this service, and it is recommended that an allocation be pursued. The satellite system appears to be within reasonable extrapolation of the state of the art. It is further recommended that the satellite-aided system spacecraft definition studies and supporting technology development be initiated.

Radio continuum and radio recombination line observations of Sagittarius B1 and G0.6-0.0

Continuum emission and H110-alpha recombination line emission from Sgr B1 and G0.6-0.0 have been observed using the VLA. It is shown that Sgr B1 is a region of great complexity, both spatially and kinematically. The continuum observations show that this region is dominated by many extended features rather than compact sources. On the other hand, Sgr B2 is dominated by several ultracompact H II regions. The two regions may be in different stages of evolution, with Sgr B1 being older, perhaps by as much as 0 exp 6 yrs. The recombination line study shows that Sgr B1 is composed of two distinct kinematic regions, a simple western one and a more complex eastern one. G0.6-0.0 is a region composed of at least four ultracompact H II regions that is situated between Sgr B1 and Sgr B2. There is an arc of ionized gas that lies to the east and to the south of these compact regions. The velocity of G0.6-0.0 is intermediate between those of Sgr B1 and Sgr B2. These facts strengthen the argument that these regions are physically associated.

Portable Wireless LAN Device and Two-Way Radio Threat Assessment for Aircraft VHF Communication Radio Band

This document summarizes the safety analysis performed on a Flight Guidance System (FGS) requirements model. In particular, the safety properties desired of the FGS model are identified and the presence of the safety properties in the model is formally verified. Chapter 1 provides an introduction to the entire project, while Chapter 2 gives a brief overview of the problem domain, the nature of accidents, model based development, and the four-variable model. Chapter 3 outlines the approach. Chapter 4 presents the results of the traditional safety analysis techniques and illustrates how the hazardous conditions associated with the system trace into specific safety properties. Chapter 5 presents the results of the formal methods analysis technique model checking that was used to verify the presence of the safety properties in the requirements model. Finally, Chapter 6 summarizes the main conclusions of the study, first and foremost that model checking is a very effective verification technique to use on discrete models with reasonable state spaces. Additional supporting details are provided in the appendices.
