Propulsion of synthetic protocells and coacervates driven by biochemical catalysis

An important area in the design of biomolecular materials is the mimicry of cellular function through the assembly of molecular components into synthetic cells, or protocells. Through compartmentalization and subsequent evolution, biological cells have achieved the goals of specificity, amplification, and response. By assembling cell-like structures that mimic the organization and size of a natural cell but that incorporate novel components and respond to synthetic triggers, we can extend their capabilities beyond what is currently achievable in biology. For applications in energy, these include the ability to convert chemical to mechanical energy, and to enable the response of sensors and responders once a threshold has been reached. This technical report summarizes progress made on this project as of Dec 31, 2023.

Ammonia Hydrogen Ignition Measurements for Clean Aircraft Propulsion

In the current study, the oxidation of ammonia with hydrogen as well as ammonia with Natural Gas was carried out in order to study the ignition delay times behind reflected shock waves to refine chemical kinetic models. Experiments were carried out in the University of Central Florida’s shock tube facility by utilizing chemiluminescence to obtain OH* emission. Experimental results were then compared with the mainstay GRI 3.0 mechanism, as well as the proprietary UCF 2022 mechanism. Results indicate that for hydrogen/ammonia mixtures, GRI 3.0 overpredicts experimental values while UCF 2022 aligns well at low temperatures but shows variance at high temperature conditions. For hydrogen/Natural Gas mixtures, neither mechanism is able to accurately predict the experimental ignition delay times. The UCF 2022 mechanism is currently being adjusted based on a sensitivity study that was carried out and the experimental results so that it will be able to capture the ignition behavior of hydrogen-carrying compounds during combustion. Experiments are currently being planned in order to extend the pressure and temperature range.

Nuclear thermal propulsion fuel element packing device

A packing device for filling fuel elements with a powder through a fill aperture in an outer shell of the fuel element, including a stationary base, a clamp assembly including a body defining a bore therein, the bore being configured to slidably receive a fuel element therein, wherein the clamp assembly is movable along a vertical axis with respect to the stationary base, a cam assembly including a cam and a drive motor configured to rotate the cam, wherein rotation of the cam alternatingly raises the clamp assembly up along the vertical axis and subsequently drops the clamping assembly, and a powder reservoir assembly including a powder reservoir and a fill needle in fluid communication with the powder reservoir.
