NREL ASSIST Rhode Island / Thermodynamic retrievals TROPoe

This dataset contains daily files with thermodynamic profiles retrieved with the optimal estimation physical retrieval TROPoe (Turner and Löhnert 2014; Turner and Blumberg 2019; Turner and Löhnert 2021). The profiles are retrieved every 10 minutes from instantaneous observations from the NREL ASSIST-II (SN 11) infrared spectrometer. Observations are noise-filtered but not averaged in time to minimize errors due to non-uniform clouds. Additional input data in TROPoe are cloud base height from a collocated NREL Upgraded Galion lidar #1212-60 and temperature, RH, and pressure from collocated PNNL met station. The lidar beta is used to estimate the cloud base height through a modified algorithm by Newsom et al., 2019 used at ARM SGP. The full pipeline for running the retrieval is available at https://github.com/StefanoWind/TROPoe_processor. In addition to these temporally resolved input data, TROPoe requires an a priori dataset (prior) which provides mean climatological estimates of thermodynamic profiles and specifies how temperature and humidity covary with height as an input (for details see e.g. Djalalova et al. 2022). The prior is a key component of the retrieval and provides a constraint on the ill-posed inversion problem. A monthly prior was computed from operational radiosonde launches at Upton, NY.

Tokamak level performance in the optimized stellarator Wendelstein 7-X with stable peaked density profiles

Progress towards achieving net gain from nuclear fusion is typically characterized by the triple product 𝑛⁢𝑇⁢𝜏. Although stellarators have several benefits for a reactor, such as the inherent steady-state capability and the lack of disruptions, the maximum achieved triple product has historically lagged behind that of tokamaks. In the large optimized stellarator Wendelstein 7-X, a triple product of (1.10 ± 0.15) × 10 20 m −3 ⁢ keVs has recently been achieved and held stable for 1.9 s. This marks an important step in stellarator core plasma performance and puts it in line with 𝐻-mode performance in similar sized tokamaks. The progress in Wendelstein 7-X performance is due to the suppression of ion-temperature-gradient turbulence by strong density gradients. In the record case, these are maintained by a fine balance of the core particle transport and central fueling using neutral beam injection. The duration of the scenario was limited in time only by technical restrictions of the neutral beam injectors and control of the divertor heat loads. This paper presents the result in the context of the leading magnetic confinement devices along with details of the scenario.

Evaluation and Applications of Multi-Instrument Boundary-Layer Thermodynamic Retrievals

Recent reports have highlighted the need for improved observations of the atmosphere boundary layer. In this study, we explore the combination of ground-based active and passive remote sensors deployed for thermodynamic profiling to analyze various boundary-layer observation strategies. Optimal-estimation retrievals of thermodynamic profiles from Atmospheric Emitted Radiance Interferometer (AERI) observed spectral radiance are compared with and without the addition of active sensor observations from a May–June 2017 observation period at the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Southern Great Plains site. In all, three separate thermodynamic retrievals are considered here: retrievals including AERI data only, retrievals including AERI data and Vaisala water vapour differential-absorption lidar data, and retrievals including AERI data and Raman lidar data. First, the three retrievals are compared to each other and to reference radiosonde data over the full observation period to obtain a bulk understanding of their differences and characterize the impact of clouds on these retrieved profiles. These analyses show that the most significant differences are in the water vapour field, where the active sensors are better able to represent the moisture gradient in the entrainment zone near the boundary-layer top. Furthermore, we also explore how differences in retrievals may affect results of applied analyses including land–atmosphere coupling, convection indices, and severe storm environmental characterization. Overall, adding active sensors to the optimal-estimation retrieval shows some added information, particularly in the moisture field. Given the costs of such platforms, the value of that added information must be weighed for the application at hand.

OPFLearnData: Dataset for Learning AC Optimal Power Flow

The datasets are resulting from OPFLearn.jl, a Julia package for creating AC OPF datasets. The package was developed to provide researchers with a standardized way to efficiently create AC OPF datasets that are representative of more of the AC OPF feasible load space compared to typical dataset creation methods. The OPFLearn dataset creation method uses a relaxed AC OPF formulation to reduce the volume of the unclassified input space throughout the dataset creation process. The dataset contains load profiles and their respective optimal primal and dual solutions. Load samples are processed using AC OPF formulations from PowerModels.jl. More information on the dataset creation method can be found in our publication, "OPF-Learn: An Open-Source Framework for Creating Representative AC Optimal Power Flow Datasets" and in the package website: https://github.com/NREL/OPFLearn.jl.

Integrative SP3 Workflow for Multi-PTM Proteomics Profiling (TZ-DP0)

The goal of the experiment was to demonstrate that the optimized multiplexed multi-PTM profiling workflow can comprehensively and quantitatively capture dynamic changes in protein abundance, cysteine oxidation, phosphorylation, and acetylation in cytokine-induced inflammatory stress in mouse pancreatic ß-cells. Global proteomic, redox proteomic, phosphoproteomic, and acetylomic were data collected from mouse Beta-TC-6 pancreatic Beta-cells, untreated (mock) and cytokine-treated Beta-cells at 4, 8, and 24 hours with 4 biological replicates. Samples were digested with trypsin and Lys-C, then analyzed by LC-MS/MS. Data were searched with MS-GF+, MASIC, and MaxQuant using PNNL's DMS processing pipeline.

Conceptual Design of Integrated Energy Systems with Market Interaction Surrogate Models

Most integrated energy system (IES) optimization frameworks employ the price-taker approximation, which ignores important interactions with market and can result in overestimated economic values. In this work, we pro-pose a machine learning surrogate-assisted optimization framework to quantify the IES/market interactions and thus go beyond price taker. We use time series clustering to generate representative IES operation profiles for the IES optimization problem and use machine learning surrogate models to predict the IES/market interaction. We quantify the accuracy of the time series clustering and surrogate models in a case study to optimally retrofit a nuclear power plant with polymer electrolyte membrane electrolyzer to co-produce electricity and hydrogen.

Spent Nuclear Fuel Receipt Rate Analysis within an Integrated Waste Manage-ment System Architecture that Includes Consolidated Interim Storage

A key parameter in analyzing the performance of an integrated waste management system (IWMS) architecture for the disposition of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) is the SNF receipt rate from reactor and other custodian sites. The introduction of one or more federal consolidated interim storage facilities (CISFs) into the IWMS architecture can enable the receipt rate profile as a function of time to be accelerated relative to system architectures without a CISF. The question then arises as to what an optimal SNF receipt rate profile for an IWMS architecture might be in view of practical constraints and desired system performance attributes and associated metrics. This paper describes a sensitivity study on SNF receipt rates and the associated results for a selected set of IWMS scenarios aimed an in-forming near-term planning for interim storage capabilities and transportation assets. Two different strategies are compared, one that fills an initial CISF quickly and then idles the transportation system while a disposal system is prepared, and a second strategy that aims to provide a more continuous use of transportation assets and receipt capabilities at the IWMS while the disposal system is readied for SNF receipt. Cost considerations and other factors such as impact on timing of clearing reactor sites of SNF, efficient use of capital assets, and other metrics, including those which may be important to a CISF host community, are examined. Based on the analysis, an initial approach is presented targeting a continuous receipt strategy while having the flexibility to step up receipt capabilities to a reasonable degree when needed and beneficial within overall system constraints.

Simultaneous control of the electron temperature and safety factor profiles in DIII-D using model-based optimal control techniques

Future tokamak power plants will likely operate using a single, well-defined plasma scenario, either in steady state or for very long pulse lengths. In order to enhance the robustness of the scenario, feedback controllers for a variety of plasma properties will be necessary to counteract any disturbances and ensure safe operation. However, only a limited set of actuators will be available to control many different quantities. Because of this, it is necessary to develop controllers that are able to regulate multiple plasma properties using a limited set of actuators. To this end, a controller has been developed for the simultaneous regulation of both the electron temperature and safety factor profiles in DIII-D. This algorithm uses a linear quadratic integral control synthesis approach based on a linearized model of the dynamics of the two profiles. Two neural network surrogate models, NubeamNet and MMMnet, are included to improve the fidelity of the model. Furthermore, the controller has been tested in simulation using COTSIM, and has demonstrated the ability to simultaneously track changes in both the electron temperature and safety factor targets, including changes in both the magnitude and the shape of the profiles.

BLOC Site - ASSIST Thermodynamic Retrievals TROPoe v0.18 / Derived Data

This dataset contains daily files with thermodynamic profiles retrieved with the optimal estimation physical retrieval TROPoe (Turner and Löhnert 2014; Turner and Blumberg 2019; Turner and Löhnert 2021). This is a post-processed dataset and recommended for use. The profiles are retrieved every 10 minutes from instantaneous radiances observed with an Atmospheric Sounder Spectrometer by Infrared Spectral Technology (ASSIST, Michaud-Belleau et al. 2025) operated by NOAA Physical Sciences Laboratory (PSL) on Block Island for WFIP3. The spectral bands used in the retrieval are in the wavenumber range from 612 - 905.4 cm-1 and are specified in Turner and Löhnert (2021).
