Liquid Abrasive Cutter Power Generation Unit Requirements

This document details the requirements for the purchase of a power generating unit (PGU) for an updated Liquid Abrasive Cutter (LAC) for use in field conditions. The system will provide high pressure water and will be integrated with existing waterjet cutting attachments to cut various materials. The system will be standalone, requiring only water, and electrical energy. Cutting heads, attachments, and a garnet delivery system are not included in this specification. This system is an evolution of the existing LAC (developed at LLNL). The PGU specified herein will have the ability to operate on electrical power via an electric motor, and accept input power from a variety of sources, such as an engine-driven generator, battery pack, solar, shore power, or micro-grid.

The impact of H2S emissions on future geothermal power generation - The Geysers region, California

The future potential for geothermal power generation in the Geysers region of California is as much as 10 times the current 502 MW(e) capacity. However, environmental factors such as H2S emissions and institutional considerations may play the primary role in determining the rate and ultimate level of development. In this paper a scenario of future geothermal generation capacity and H2S emissions in the Geysers region is presented. Problem areas associated with H2S emissions, H2S abatement processes, plant operations, and government agency resources are described. The impact of H2S emissions on future development and the views of effected organizations are discussed. Potential actions needed to remove these constraints are summarized.

Oxidation-resistant reflective surfaces for solar dynamic power generation in near Earth orbit

Reflective surfaces for space station power generation systems are required to withstand the atomic oxygen-dominated environment of near Earth orbit. Thin films of platinum and rhodium, which are corrosion resistant reflective metals, have been deposited by ion beam sputter deposition onto various substrate materials. Solar reflectances were then measured as a function of time of exposure to a RF-generated air plasma. Similarly, various protective coating materials, including MgF2, SiO2, Al2O3, and Si3N4, were deposited onto silver-coated substrates and then exposed to the plasma. Analysis of the films both before and after exposure by both ESCA and Auger spectroscopy was also performed. The results indicate that Pt and Rh do not suffer any loss in reflectance over the duration of the tests. Also, each of the coating materials survived the plasma environment. The ESCA and Auger analyses are discussed as well.

Thermoelectric unicouple used for power generation

A high-efficiency thermoelectric unicouple is used for power generation. The unicouple is formed with a plurality of legs, each leg formed of a plurality of segments. The legs are formed in a way that equalizes certain aspects of the different segments. Different materials are also described.

Electronic power generators for ultrasonic frequencies

The design and construction of an ultrasonic frequency electronic power generator are discussed. The principle design elements of the generator are illustrated. The generator provides an inductive load with an output power of two kilowatts and a variable output frequency in the fifteen to thirty KiloHertz range. The method of conducting the tests and the results obtained with selected materials are analyzed.

Overcoming two significant hurdles to space power generation Transportation and assembly

The design of large, space-based power generation satellites is strongly influenced by the transportation modes available and the assembly methods adopted. Flight plans for assembly are explored using the Space Shuttle as the transport vehicle. Future heavy-lift launch systems are postulated, and their impact on assembly cost of operational Solar Satellite Power Stations (SSPS) presented. Sensitivity to various levels of ground detail parts prefabrication are compared to corresponding levels of orbital fabrication. Assumptions concerning the degree of human skills are outlined, and related to the method of assembly. Cost comparisons and recommendations for continued studies are developed.

Development of large wind energy power generation system

The background and development of an experimental 100 kW wind-energy generation system are described, and the results of current field tests are presented. The experimental wind turbine is a two-bladed down-wind horizontal axis propeller type with a 29.4 m diameter rotor and a tower 28 m in height. The plant was completed in March, 1983, and has been undergoing trouble-free tests since then. The present program calls for field tests during two years from fiscal 1983 to 1984. The development of technologies relating to the linkage and operation of wind-energy power generation system networks is planned along with the acquisition of basic data for the development of a large-scale wind energy power generation system.

Method and apparatus for lead-unity-lag electric power generation system

A method employing a lead-unity-lag adjustment on a power generation system is disclosed. The method may include calculating a unity power factor point and adjusting system parameters to shift a power factor angle to substantially match an operating power angle creating a new unity power factor point. The method may then define operation parameters for a high reactance permanent magnet machine based on the adjusted power level.
