Effects of neutral gas release on current collection during the CHARGE-2 rocket experiment

Observations of current collection enhancements due to cold nitrogen gas control jet emissions from a highly charged rocket payload in the ionosphere are reported. These observations were made during the second cooperative high altitude rocket gun experiment (CHARGE-2) which was an electrically tethered mother/daughter payload system. The current collection enhancement was observed at the daughter payload located 100 to 400 m away from the mother which was firing an energetic electron beam. The authors interpret these results in terms of an electrical discharge forming in close proximity to the daughter during the short periods of gas emission. The results indicate that it is possible to enhance the electron current collection capability of positively charged vehicles by means of deliberate neutral gas releases into an otherwise undisturbed space plasma. These results can also be compared with recent laboratory observations of hollow cathode plasma contactors operating in the ignited mode. Experimental observations of current collection enhancements due to cold nitrogen gas control jet emissions from a highly charged, isolated daughter payload in the nighttime ionosphere were made. These observations were derived from the second cooperative high altitude rocket gun experiment (CHARGE-2) which was an electrically tethered mother-daughter payload system. The rocket flew from White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) in December, 1985. The rocket achieved an altitude of 261 km and carried a 1 keV electron beam emitting up to 48 mA of current (Myers, et al., 1989a). The mother payload, carried the electron beam source, while the daughter acted as a remote current collection and observation platform and reached a distance of 426 m away from the main payload. Gas emissions at the daughter were due to periodic thruster jet firings to maintain separation velocity between the two payloads.

Electron collection enhancement arising from neutral gas jets on a charged vehicle in the ionosphere

Observations of current collection enhancements due to cold nitrogen gas control jet emissions from a highly charged, isolated rocket payload in the ionosphere have been made during the cooperative high altitude rocket gun experiment (CHARGE) 2 using an electrically tethered mother/daughter payload system. The current collection enhancement was observed on a platform (daughter payload) located 100 to 400 m away from the main payload firing an energetic electron beam (mother payload). These results are interpreted in terms of an electrical discharge forming in close proximity to the daughter vehicle during the short periods of gas emission. The results indicate that it is possible to enhance the electron current collection capability of positively charged vehicles by means of deliberate neutral gas releases into an otherwise undisturbed space plasma. The results are also compared with recent laboratory observations of hollow cathode plasma contactors operating in the 'ignited' mode.

Miniature Oxidizer Ionizer for a Fuel Cell

A proposed miniature device for ionizing the oxygen (or other oxidizing gas) in a fuel cell would consist mostly of a membrane ionizer using the same principles as those of the device described in the earlier article, Miniature Bipolar Electrostatic Ion Thruster (NPO-21057). The oxidizing gas would be completely ionized upon passage through the holes in the membrane ionizer. The resulting positively charged atoms or molecules of oxidizing gas could then, under the influence of the fringe fields of the ionizer, move toward the fuel-cell cathode that would be part of a membrane/electrode assembly comprising the cathode, a solid-electrolyte membrane, and an anode. The electro-oxidized state of the oxidizer atoms and molecules would enhance transfer of them through the cathode, thereby reducing the partial pressure of the oxidizer gas between the ionizer and the fuel-cell cathode, thereby, in turn, causing further inflow of oxidizer gas through the holes in the membrane ionizer. Optionally the ionizer could be maintained at a positive electric potential with respect to the cathode, in which case the resulting electric field would accelerate the ions toward the cathode.

Coupled nuclear spin relaxation and internal rotations in magnesium fluosilicate hexahydrate.

Both proton and fluorine nuclear spin-lattice relaxations have been studied by the 180- to 90-deg pulse method in magnesium fluosilicate hexahydrate at 25 and 13 MHz over the temperature range from 170 to 350 K. Observed nonexponential behavior of the nuclear magnetic relaxation is explained by internal rotations of the doubly charged negative fluosilicate ions and doubly charged positive magnesium hexahydrate ions.

A possible current system associated with the Sqp variation.

It is suggested that the quiet day daily magnetic variation in the polar cap region, Sqp, results partly from the short-circuit effect of the magnetotail current by the polar ionosphere. This implies that there is an inward field-aligned current from the dawnside magnetopause to the forenoon sector of the auroral oval (positively charged) and an outward field-aligned current to the duskside magnetopause from the afternoon sector of the oval (negatively charged), together with the ionospheric (Pedersen and Hall) currents. The distribution of the magnetic field vectors of both combined current systems agrees with the observed Sqp vector distribution. The space charges provide an electric field distribution which is similar to that which has been observed by polar orbiting satellites.

Biological activity of ionene polymers

Ionene polymers are polyammonium salts with positive nitrogens in the backbone, resulting from the polycondensation of diamines with dihalides or from the polycondensation of halo amines. The mechanism of formation of ionene polymers of different structures and their biological activity is reviewed. The antimicrobial and antifungal properties are compared with low molecular weight ammonium salts. Ionenes were found to combine with DNA by means of ionic bonds to yield similar complexes to those obtained with polyamines (spermine and spermidine). They also combine with nerve cell receptors and exercise a more powerful and longer duration ganglionic blocking action than their monomeric analogs. The antiheparin activity of ionenes and the thromboresistance of elastomeric ionene heparin coatings is described. The enhanced biological activity of ionenes as compared with low molecular weight compounds is attributed to a cooperative effect of a large number of positive charges on the polymeric chains.

A relaxation theory of plasma-broadened He II lines

The relaxation theory of plasma line broadening developed by Smith and Hooper (1967) and extended by Smith (1968) is extended further to cover a case of a positively charged radiator. Differences in the theory, arising from its application to a charged radiator, are discussed in detail.

An induced junction photovoltaic cell

Silicon solar cells operating with induced junctions rather than diffused junctions have been fabricated and tested. Induced junctions were created by forming an inversion layer near the surface of the silicon by supplying a sheet of positive charge above the surface. Measurements of the response of the inversion layer cell to light of different wavelengths indicated it to be more sensitive to the shorter wavelengths of the sun's spectrum than conventional cells. The greater sensitivity occurs because of the shallow junction and the strong electric field at the surface.

Covalent bonding of polycations to small polymeric particles

Process produces small spherical polymeric particles which have polycations bound to them. In emulsion form, particles present large positively charged surface which is available to absorb polyanions. This properly can be used in removing heparin from blood or bile acids from the digestive tract. Other anions, such as DNA and RNA, can also be removed from aqueous solutions.

Ion-implantation effect on time-dependent breakdown in SiO2

It was experimentally demonstrated that the field emission of positive ions from the metal SiO2 interface in MOS structures can be controlled by introducing a positive charge in a small ion-implantation dose to a shallow depth below the metal electrode. Considerable improvement of time-dependent breakdown was noted in structures implanted in this manner as opposed to nonimplanted ones. This experiment confirms the model proposed by Li and Maserjian (1975) for radiation effect on time-dependent breakdown.

The depletion of interstellar elements and the interaction between gas and dust in space

Observational data obtained by the Copernicus satellite and ground-based facilities are discussed which show that the depletion of interstellar elements apparently varies with cloud density in the way to be expected if the depletions were due to accretion of gas atoms or ions onto grains. It is shown that the depletion-by-accretion mechanism is supported by a good correlation between depletions and first ionization potentials of the elements (except for lithium, sodium, and potassium) and that this mechanism offers an alternative to the grain-condensation hypothesis in which most of the interstellar medium is required to have been processed through stellar nebulae. It is noted that if the grains do not normally carry positive charges, ion-grain encounters are the most important interactions between gas and dust and may be significant in determining ionization equilibrium, especially if there is a large population of very small grains.

A local diffusion process associated with the sweeping of energetic particles by Io

A local, turbulent diffusion process which may rapidly refill the partial cavity of energetic particles created by Io's passage through a flux tube is discussed. A model is developed of Io's sweeping action on energetic particles in which a wake is formed behind the flux tube threading Io. It is shown to be possible that this wake contains an excess of positive charge, thereby creating an electric field. The particle drift produced by this field, coupled with the density gradient of energetic protons, can generate an instability. It is this instability that is responsible for the turbulent diffusion process. The sweeping of energetic particles is also discussed in relation to particle energy and pitch angle distribution.

Venus' night side ionosphere - Its origin and maintenance

A substantial nightside ionosphere has been observed on Venus by both Mariner 5 and Mariner 10. Major dayside ionic species such as O2(+) and other molecular ions have chemical lifetimes much shorter than the 244.3-day rotation period of the planet. Rapid transport of ions from the dayside to the nightside to the extent required seems most unlikely. Consequently, possibilities are investigated for local production of ions on the nightside itself. Constraints imposed by chemical lifetimes require atomic ions with low ionization potentials. It is suggested that metallic ions of meteoric origin are the positive charge carriers, and the plausibility of this mechanism is demonstrated. Other possibilities are examined and shown to be less likely. Meteor ablation on Venus, the aeronomy of metallic species, and the role of negative ions near the electron peaks of the atmosphere are discussed.

Dialysis system

The improved hemodialysis system utilizes a second polymeric membrane having dialyzate in contact with one surface and a urea decomposition solution in contact with the other surface. The membrane selectively passes urea from the dialyzate into the decomposition solution, while preventing passage of positively charged metal ions from the dialyzate into the solution and ammonium ions from the solution into the dialyzate.
