Axion detection via superfluid 3 He ferromagnetic phase and quantum measurement techniques

We propose to use the nuclear spin excitation in the ferromagnetic A 1 phase of the superfluid 3 He for the axion dark matter detection. This approach is striking in that it is sensitive to the axion-nucleon coupling, one of the most important features of the QCD axion introduced to solve the strong CP problem. We review a quantum mechanical description of the nuclear spin excitation and apply it to the estimation of the axion-induced spin excitation rate. We also describe a possible detection method of the spin excitation in detail and show that the combination of the squeezing of the final state with the Josephson parametric amplifier and the homodyne measurement can enhance the sensitivity. It turns out that this approach gives good sensitivity to the axion dark matter with the mass of $\mathcal{O}$(1) μeV depending on the size of the external magnetic field. We estimate the parameters of experimental setups, e.g., the detector volume and the amplitude of squeezing, required to reach the QCD axion parameter space.

Phase contrast imaging measurements and numerical simulations of turbulent density fluctuations in gas-fuelled ECRH discharges in Wendelstein 7-X

The fundamental nature of turbulent density fluctuations in standard Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) stellarator discharges is investigated experimentally via phase contrast imaging (PCI) in combination with gyrokinetic simulations with the code GENE. We find that density fluctuations are ion-temperature-gradient-driven and radially localised in the outer half of the plasma. It is shown that the line-integrated PCI measurements cover the right range of wavenumbers and a favourable toroidal and poloidal location to capture some of the strongest density fluctuations in W7-X. Due to the radial localisation of fluctuations, measured wavenumber–frequency spectra exhibit a dominant phase velocity, which can be related to the E × B rotation velocity at the radial position of a well in the neoclassical radial electric field. The match is robust against variations of heating power and line-integrated density, which is partly due to the localisation of fluctuations and partly due to effects of the radial gradient in the E × B velocity profile on the wavenumber–frequency spectrum. The latter effect is studied with a newly built synthetic PCI diagnostic and global gyrokinetic simulations with GENE-3D.

Truncated nonlinear interferometer-based sensor system

A truncated non-linear interferometer-based sensor system includes an input port that receives an optical beam and a non-linear amplifier that amplifies the optical beam with a pump beam and renders a probe beam and a conjugate beam. The system's local oscillators have a relationship with the respective beams. The system includes a sensor that transduces an input with the probe beam and the conjugate beam or their respective local oscillators. It includes one or more phase-sensitive detectors that detect a phase modulation between the respective local oscillators and the probe beam and the conjugate beam. Output from the phase-sensitive-detectors is based on the detected phase modulation. The phase-sensor-detectors include measurement circuitry that measure the phase signals. The measurement is the sum or difference of the phase signals in which the measured combination exhibit a quantum noise reduction in an intensity difference or a phase sum or an amplitude difference quadrature.

Flow Loop Study of ECT-Based Volume Fraction Monitoring in Oil–Water Two-Phase Flows

Measurement of phase volume fractions in water-containing multiphase flows is necessary for the optimization of a host of industrial flow processes. Many water-containing multiphase flows can be classified as either water-dispersed or water-continuous mixtures. A recently developed approach based on Hanai’s mixture formula and utilizing electrical capacitance tomography (ECT) sensors have shown good potential for obtaining water volume fraction estimates in two-phase water-containing flows with different water salinity levels. However, the proposed approach was investigated via controlled experiments restricted to static configurations while, in practice, multiphase flows can be dynamic and unpredictable. In this work, we perform a flow loop study of the proposed ECT-based method for volume fraction estimation in oil–water two-phase flows. Here, we evaluate the performance of the proposed method in both water-dispersed and water-continuous flow regimes by employing different types of capacitive sensors in cylindrical arrangements and parallel-plate rectangular arrangements.

Scheme for stabilising the phase and arrival time of ultrashort laser pulses in a coherent beam combining fibre system

An algorithm has been demonstrated for simultaneously measuring the phase and arrival time of optical pulses relative to pulses in a reference channel using one detector array. Based on this algorithm, a simple optoelectronic pulse phase and arrival time stabilisation scheme has been designed for operation in a coherent beam combining fibre system for ultrashort pulses (including chirped ones). We have studied the performance of the stabilisation scheme. In particular, we have reached a phase measurement rate of 25 000 cps, demonstrated an ∼ 2 kHz limiting phase stabilisation frequency in a feedback loop, and obtained an arrival time measurement accuracy of ∼ 5 % of the transform-limited pulse duration at a measurement rate of 5 cps. In experiments concerned with coherent beam combining for two channels of a pulsed fibre system at a wavelength of 1030 nm, we have demonstrated phase stabilisation with an accuracy better than λ/100 and delay setting accuracy of 10 fs at a transform-limited pulse duration of ∼ 200 fs and obtained 94 % beam combining efficiency. Measurement-induced entanglement phase transitions in variational quantum circuits

Variational quantum algorithms (VQAs), which classically optimize a parametrized quantum circuit to solve a computational task, promise to advance our understanding of quantum many-body systems and improve machine learning algorithms using near-term quantum computers. Prominent challenges associated with this family of quantum-classical hybrid algorithms are the control of quantum entanglement and quantum gradients linked to their classical optimization. Known as the barren plateau phenomenon, these quantum gradients may rapidly vanish in the presence of volume-law entanglement growth, which poses a serious obstacle to the practical utility of VQAs. Inspired by recent studies of measurement-induced entanglement transition in random circuits, we investigate the entanglement transition in variational quantum circuits endowed with intermediate projective measurements. Considering the Hamiltonian Variational Ansatz (HVA) for the XXZ model and the Hardware Efficient Ansatz (HEA), we observe a measurement-induced entanglement transition from volume-law to area-law with increasing measurement rate. Moreover, we provide evidence that the transition belongs to the same universality class of random unitary circuits. Importantly, the transition coincides with a “landscape transition” from severe to mild/no barren plateaus in the classical optimization. Our work may provide an avenue for improving the trainability of quantum circuits by incorporating intermediate measurement protocols in currently available quantum hardware.

Revised phase diagram of the high- T c cuprate superconductor Pb-doped Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8 + δ revealed by anisotropic transport measurements

Although phase diagrams can be leveraged to investigate high transition temperature (high-T c ) superconductivity, the issue has not been discussed thoroughly. In this study, we elucidate the phase diagram of the overdoped side of high-T c cuprates via systematic anisotropic transport measurements for Pb-doped Bi-2212 single crystals. We demonstrate that the characteristic temperatures of the “weak” pseudogap opening and electronic coherence cross each other at a critical doping level, while those of the “strong” pseudogap merges into that of superconducting fluctuations above the critical doping level. Her the results indicate the importance of Mottness in high-T c superconductivity.

Phase and contrast moiré signatures in two-dimensional cone beam interferometry

Neutron interferometry has played a distinctive role in fundamental science and characterization of materials. Moiré neutron interferometers are candidate next-generation instruments: they offer microscopy-like magnification of the signal, enabling direct camera recording of interference patterns across the full neutron wavelength spectrum. Here we demonstrate the extension of phase-grating moiré interferometry to two-dimensional geometries. Our fork-dislocation phase gratings reveal phase singularities in the moiré pattern, and we explore orthogonal moiré patterns with two-dimensional phase gratings. Our measurements of phase topologies and gravitationally induced phase shifts are in good agreement with theory. These techniques can be implemented in existing neutron instruments to advance interferometric analyses of emerging materials and precision measurements of fundamental constants. Combined spectroscopic imaging STM and ARPES study of different gaps measured in the cuprate phase diagram

A comparative study of the gaps measured in two techniques, angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy and spectroscopic imaging scanning tunneling microscopy, is presented herein. In particular the study focuses on the more overdoped region of the cuprate phase diagram in the superconducting state. While the total densities of states measured in the two techniques agree very well, it is shown that the peak in the density of states, Δ DOS , is consistently displaced to higher energies relative to the maximal superconducting gap, Δ 0 , determined in photoemission. The difference between the two gaps is more evident for the less doped samples reflecting increased normalization of bands. This observation will clearly influence the boundaries in the phase diagrams of the cuprates defined by these two techniques.

A multi-chord, two-color interferometer using Hilbert transform phase detection for measuring electron density in spheromak plasmas

A new, four-chord, CO 2 /He–Ne heterodyne interferometer has been designed and built for measuring line-averaged plasma density in the HIT-SI3 and subsequent HIT-SIU sustained spheromak devices. The two-color system successfully eliminates vibration-induced errors caused by mirrors that are secured to the vacuum chamber and is able to resolve electron densities ne in the full operating range of 10 18 –10 20 m –3 in both experiments with an integrated error of 4.7 × 10 17 m –2 . Here, data are presented from high toroidal current plasma discharges, showing the time evolution of electron densities n e and j Φ /n e along multiple chords.

2D material platform for overcoming the amplitude–phase tradeoff in ring resonators

Compact and high-speed electro-optic phase modulators play a vital role in various large-scale applications including optical computing, quantum and neural networks, and optical communication links. Conventional electro-refractive phase modulators such as silicon (Si), III-V and graphene on Si suffer from a fundamental tradeoff between device length and optical loss that limits their scaling capabilities. High-finesse ring resonators have been traditionally used as compact intensity modulators, but their use for phase modulation has been limited due to the high insertion loss associated with the phase shift. Here, we show that high-finesse resonators can achieve a strong phase shift with low insertion loss by simultaneous modulation of the real and imaginary parts of the refractive index, to the same extent, i.e., Δ n Δ k ∼1. To implement this strategy, we demonstrate an active hybrid platform that combines a low-loss SiN ring resonator with 2D materials such as graphene and transition metal dichalcogenide [tungsten disulphide (WSe 2 )], which induces a strong change in the imaginary and real parts of the index. Our platform consisting of a 25 µm long Gr-Al 2 O 3 -WSe 2 capacitor embedded on a SiN ring of 50 µm radius (∼8% ring coverage) achieves a continuous phase shift of (0.46±0.05) π radians with an insertion loss (IL) of 3.18±0.20 dB and a transmission modulation (Δ T Ring ) of 1.72±0.15dB at a probe wavelength ( λ p ) of 1646.18 nm. We find that our Gr-Al 2 O 3 -WSe 2 capacitor exhibits a phase modulation efficiency ( V π 2 ⋅ L ) of 0.530±0.016V⋅cm and can support an electro-optic bandwidth of 14.9±0.1GHz. We further show that our platform can achieve a phase shift of π radians with an IL of 5 dB and a minimum Δ T of 0.046 dB. We demonstrate the broadband nature of the binary phase response, by measuring a phase shift of (1.00±0.10) π radians, with an IL of 5.20±0.31dB and a minimal Δ T Ring of 0.015±0.006dB for resonances spanning from 1564 to 1650 nm. This SiN–2D hybrid platform provides the design for compact and high-speed reconfigurable circuits with graphene and transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayers that can enable large-scale photonic systems.

Flash Freeze Flow Tube to Vitrify Aerosol Particles at Fixed Relative Humidity Values

Development of methods to measure the phase transitions and physical properties of submicron atmospheric aerosol particles is needed to better model these systems. Here, we introduce a method to flash freeze submicron particles to measure phase transitions as a function of relative humidity (RH). Particles are equilibrated at a fixed RH, vitrified in a temperature-controlled flow tube, and imaged with cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM). We demonstrate the use of the technique for measuring the efflorescence relative humidity (ERH) of potassium sulfate and potassium chloride aerosol as well as the separation RH for a multicomponent organic/inorganic system that undergoes liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS). The location of phase transitions can shift between the micrometer and nanometer size regimes and particles in a given population may have a range of RH over which a phase transition occurs. This technique addresses these requirements by allowing for characterization of the phase transitions for individual particles in a population on the submicron scale.

Line Faults Classification Using Machine Learning on Three Phase Voltages Extracted from Large Dataset of PMU Measurements

An end-to-end supervised learning method is developed to classify transmission line faults in a twoyear field-recorded dataset that includes synchronized measurements of three-phase voltages recorded by 38 Phasor Measurement Units (PMU) sparsely located in in the US Western Grid interconnection. Statistical analysis is performed to extract features from this large dataset to train Support Vector Machine (SVM), Random Forest (RF), and eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) classifiers initially. The training further leverages a simulated dataset from a synthetic grid with 12 PMUs to increase the number of faults of types infrequently seen in the field-recorded dataset. Training the classification models with the combined dataset resulted in a classification accuracy of 97.7%. This is a significant improvement over 89.7% to 92.5% accuracy obtained by relying on the field-recorded dataset alone.

Real-Time Measurements of Gas-Phase Medium-Chain Chlorinated Paraffins Reveal Daily Changes in Gas-Particle Partitioning Controlled by Ambient Temperature

Chlorinated paraffins (CPs) are synthetic polychlorinated n-alkanes produced as mixtures of a range of C x Cl y H 2x–y+2 formulas. CPs have numerous industrial applications but are toxic, long-lived, and environmentally ubiquitous with environmental releases occurring throughout their production, use, and disposal. Short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs, C 10–13 ) have been regulated by the United States Environmental Protection Agency since 2009 and by the Stockholm Convention since 2017. SCCP regulation is expected to cause increased production of medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (MCCPs; C 14–17 ), which are currently under consideration for Stockholm Convention regulations. Thus, there is a need to improve the understanding of MCCP environmental transport, distribution, and fate. Existing measurements are limited in their spatial and temporal coverage. Measurements of CP atmospheric loading are particularly scarce. Historically, these measurements have required long sampling times, obscuring the temporal behavior of atmospheric CPs. We report real-time in situ measurements of 18 gas-phase MCCPs. These measurements were made in the United States Southern Great Plains with nitrate ion chemical ionization mass spectrometry (NO 3 –CIMS). Here, the estimated average lower-limit concentration of MCCPs is on the order of single-digit ng/m 3 . MCCP diel behavior is partially explained by gas-particle partitioning with implications for MCCP transport and lifetimes.
