The American-Made Solar Prize is a prize competition from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) that is designed to revitalize U.S. solar manufacturing. The competition aims to support the growth of U.S. solar manufacturing and reenergize American energy innovation by tapping into Americans’ competitive spirit and the nation's unparalleled innovation ecosystem, leveraging national labs, incubators, facilities, and more. Finalists have been chosen based on the work they intend to do with a manufacturing partner to advance their innovation to market. NLR will provide technical advisement to assist participants in demonstrating the full potential of their product.

We have studied the degradation of both full-sized modules and minimodules with PERC and Al-BSF cell variations in fields while considering packaging strategies. We demonstrate the implementations of data-driven tools to analyze large numbers of modules and volumes of timeseries data to obtain the performance loss and degradation pathways. This data analysis pipeline enables quantitative comparison and ranking of module variations, as well as mapping and deeper understanding of degradation mechanisms. The best performing module is a half-cell PERC, which shows a performance loss rate ( PLR ) of −0.27 ± 0.12% per annum (%/ a ) after initial losses have stabilized. Minimodule studies showed inconsistent performance rankings due to significant power loss contributions via series resistance, however, recombination losses remained stable. Overall, PERC cell variations outperform or are not distinguishable from Al-BSF cell variations.
In response to concern expressed by the photovoltaics community over progress toward the establishment and issuance of concensus standards on photovoltaic performance measurements, a review of the status of and progress in developing these standards was conducted. It examined the roles of manufacturers, and consumers and the national laboratories funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) in supporting this effort. This was done by means of a series of discussions with knowledgeable members of the photovoltaic community. Results of these interviews are summarized and a new approach to managing support of standards activity is recommended that responds to specific problems found in the performance measurement standards area. The study concludes that there is a positive role to be played by the U.S. Department of Energy in establishing collector performance measurement standards. It recommends that DOE continue to provide direct financial support for selected committees and for research at national laboratories, and that management of the activity be restructured to increase the authority and responsibility of the consensus committees.
The main objective was to design and build a minimum of three photovoltaic test panels for plasma interaction experiments. These experiments are intended to provide data on the interactions between high-voltage solar arrays and the space plasma environment. Data gathered will significantly contribute to the development of design criteria for the space station solar arrays. Electrical isolation between the solar cell strings and the module mounting plate is required for high-voltage bias.
The study will provide guidance towards the design and application of larger and/or outdoor-use intended instruments. Measurement capability will be benchmarked against existing specimens, examined in a round-robin study using conventional spectrophotometer instruments. Data acquisition and storage will be integrated into the DuraMAT DataHub network along with data visualization tool, facilitating sharing of information.

In this work we have elucidated the trade off between structural mechanics FEM model accuracy and computation time by employing lower fidelity viscoelastic models. Results indicate that computation time can easily be cut in half while only expecting a potential maximum error of 10 % by considering lower fidelity models. A novel approach to produce the Prony Series fit for viscoelastic characterization has also been presented. Employing this approach, we were able to achieve a further 10 % reduction in computation time without further sacrificing simulation accuracy.
