First full Dalitz plot measurement in neutron 𝛽 decay using the Nab spectrometer and implications for new physics

Precision measurements of observables in neutron 𝛽 decay are used to test the standard model description of the weak interaction and search for evidence of new physics. The Nab experiment at the Fundamental Neutron Physics Beamline at the Spallation Neutron Source was constructed to measure correlations in neutron decay by utilizing an asymmetric spectrometer and novel detection system to accurately reconstruct the proton momentum and electron energy for each 𝛽 decay. This work describes the detection of neutron 𝛽-decay products in the Nab spectrometer and presents the first full Dalitz plot representation of the phase space of neutron 𝛽 decay for all electrons >100 keV. In addition, new constraints are placed on a possible excited neutron state, hypothesized to explain the disagreement between the appearance and disappearance neutron lifetime techniques.

static-subid: Deterministic subordinate UID/GID assignment for unprivileged containers

static-subid calculates predictable subordinate UID and GID ranges for Linux users based on their UID, ensuring consistent ID mappings across multiple systems. Unlike shadow-utils' sequential allocation (which depends on creation order), static-subid uses a deterministic formula that guarantees the same user UID always receives the same subordinate ID range. Subordinate IDs enable user namespaces for unprivileged container runtimes (Podman, Docker rootless mode, LXC) by mapping container UIDs/GIDs to host subordinate IDs without requiring root privileges.

Federal Facility Agreement and Consent Order Nevada National Security Site Use Restriction Management Plan, Revision 2

This Use Restriction Management Plan (URMP) provides the information needed to create, modify, and manage use restrictions (URs) for sites on the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS), and sites accessed through the NNSS main gate, that were closed using the corrective action alternative (CAA) of closure in place under the Federal Facility Agreement and Consent Order (FFACO). It addresses URs established under the FFACO for releases related to the development, testing, and production of nuclear weapons that are located on the NNSS and that are accessed through the NNSS main gate. FFACO URs are established at sites where contamination remains at levels exceeding final action levels (FALs) or is forecasted to exceed Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) maximum contaminant levels (CFR, 2025a) over the next 1,000 years following completion of corrective actions. Administrative URs are established at Industrial Sites and Soils sites where contamination remains at levels exceeding industrial action levels as defined in the Soils RBCA document. All URs stipulate restrictions sufficient to ensure the protection of human health, safety, and the environment.

Executive summary of error sources in dynamic surface temperature measurements

Obtaining bulk T requires measuring apparent sample interface T surface , knowledge of any window conditions T window , and knowledge of thermal transport from the sample to the window. To obtain bulk T with uncertainties below 5% requires relatively small uncertainties in each of these areas, and large uncertainties in one area require smaller uncertainties in others to maintain the error budget. For example, if T window is known to 10%, a 5% total uncertainty can be obtained if T surface is known to 1% and combined transport uncertainties are known to 20%. If T surface can only be measured to 2%, combined transport uncertainties must be 17% to reach the same overall uncertainty. As the form of transport is unknown at high pressure, and window temperatures are difficult to measure by their very nature, reducing surface T uncertainties is the practical first step. Here we will discuss various error sources in the measurement of apparent T surface , and which ones must be correctly obtained prior to the experiment.

Reexamining Fat: Exploring Diversity, Plasticity, Development, Functional Implication, and Therapeutic Options

Obesity has become so prevalent in many developed countries that it is increasingly perceived as a new norm, despite decades of interventions and drug development. Although research continues to explore novel strategies, no single approach to date has demonstrated sustained success in reducing its population-level dominance. This underscores the need to better evaluate and integrate the growing body of knowledge surrounding obesity’s multifaceted nature. Stamped under one ‘fat’ name, adipose tissue varies by color, location, morphology, composition, and function. This variability suggests a level of complexity that demands deeper investigation. Although the relevance and roles of different adipose types have been extensively discussed throughout the literature, their interdependence, synergy, and collective impact on the body remain to be fully expounded. This review aims to further consolidate and elucidate the available information on the different adipose tissue types and their association with obesity and metabolic health. We also discuss existing and emerging therapeutic strategies, highlighting their respective strengths and limitations.

The Spectroscopic Stage-5 Experiment

The existence, properties, and dynamics of the dark sectors of our universe pose fundamental challenges to our current model of physics, and large-scale astronomical surveys may be our only hope to unravel these long-standing mysteries. In this white paper, we describe the science motivation, instrumentation, and survey plan for the next-generation spectroscopic observatory, the Stage-5 Spectroscopic Experiment (Spec-S5). Spec-S5 is a new all-sky spectroscopic instrument optimized to efficiently carry out cosmological surveys of unprecedented scale and precision. The baseline plan for Spec-S5 involves upgrading two existing 4-m telescopes to new 6-m wide-field facilities, each with a highly multiplexed spectroscopic instrument capable of simultaneously measuring the spectra of 13,000 astronomical targets. Spec-S5, which builds and improves on the hardware used for previous cosmology experiments, represents a cost-effective and rapid approach to realizing a more than 10$\times$ gain in spectroscopic capability compared to the current state-of-the-art represented by the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument project (DESI). Spec-S5 will provide a critical scientific capability in the post-Rubin and post-DESI era for advancing cosmology, fundamental physics, and astrophysics in the 2030s.

Assessment of Consensus and Wake Steering Wind Farm Control for the American WAKE ExperimeNt (AWAKEN)

As part of the AmericanWAKE ExperimeNt (AWAKEN), a wind farm control experiment is being conducted at the King Plains wind plant in northern Oklahoma from May 2024 to summer 2025. Two types of wind farm control are being evaluated: 1) wake steering, in which upstream wind turbines are misaligned relative to the wind direction to deflect their wakes away from downstream turbines and increase total wind plant power, and 2) consensus yaw control, whereby each turbine's yaw position is controlled to track a "consensus" weighted average of the wind directions measured at neighboring turbines rather than the turbine's own nacelle wind direction measurement. By replacing the noisy wind direction measured by an individual turbine with the smoother, more slowly varying consensus wind direction, consensus yaw control is intended to reduce yaw activity and increase power capture by improving yaw alignment. To help balance the potential increase in yaw activity for the turbines implementing wake steering, they are also operated using consensus yaw control. In this presentation we highlight the impacts of consensus yaw control and wake steering on both energy production and yaw travel at the wind plant. Results show that the change in energy from wake steering is minor overall, but significant increases in energy are observed for closely spaced turbines. Further, larger increases in energy occur during low turbulence periods. The impact of consensus yaw control on energy production is currently inconclusive, with some energy gains measured for some turbines and losses measured for others. Lastly, consensus yaw control was found to reduce yaw travel significantly, even when combined with wake steering.

Momentum Transfer and Cratering Phenomena Associated With the Impact of Aluminum Spheres Into Thick Aluminum Targets at Velocities to 24,000 Feet Per Second

Spheres of 2017-T4 aluminum with diameters of, 1/16, 1/8, and ½ inch were launched into semi-infinite targets of 2024-T4 and 1100-0 aluminum. The momentum transfer during impact was measured by means of a simple ballistic pendulum to which the target was attached. The ratio of target momentum to projectile momentum increased with increasing projectile velocity and with projectile diameter. Mass loss due to cratering, penetration, and crater diameter were also obtained for these experiments. It was noted that the variation of these parameters was also a function of the projectile diameter. No conclusive evidence was uncovered to explain this apparent scale effect. However, close examination of the various craters suggests that the cratering process is, in fact, different for the different size projectiles. The cause for this difference has yet to be resolved.
