Calibration of the Nonlinear Viscoelastic SPECtacular Model for 828-CTBN/DEA/GMB and 828/Z/AlOx

Nonlinear viscoelastic model calibrations are developed for two filled epoxies: an adduct of Epon 828 DGEBA and CTBN cross-linked with diethanolamine (DEA) filled with glass microballoons, called 828-CTBN/DEA/GMB, and Epon 828 DGEBA cross-linked with Ancamine Z and filled with alumina, called 828/Z/AlOx. The thermo-mechanical responses of these materials are represented using the SPECtacular constitutive model, an extension of the Simplified Potential Energy Clock (SPEC) model. The model couples

Simple model for the nonlinear radiation field of a free electron laser

It is shown that Jacobi elliptic function solutions of the nonlinear Duffing equation model the radiation field in a high-gain free electron laser through early saturation. After initial start-up, the field can be expressed equivalently with a hyperbolic secant. The model is derived for arbitrary detuning from resonance, which enables study of the spectral properties in the early nonlinear regime.

Nonlinear Response of Atmospheric Blocking to Early Winter Barents–Kara Seas Warming: An Idealized Model Study

Wintertime Ural blocking (UB) has been shown to play an important role in cold extremes over Eurasia, and thus it is useful to investigate the impact of warming over the Barents–Kara Seas (BKS) on the behavior of Ural blocking. In our study the response of UB to stepwise tropospheric warming over the BKS is examined using a dry dynamic core model. Nonlinear responses are found in the frequency and local persistence of UB. The frequency and local persistence of the UB increase with the strength of BKS warming in a less strong range and decrease with the further increase of BKS warming, which is linked to the UB propagation influenced by upstream background atmospheric circulation. For a weak BKS warming, the UB becomes more persistent due to its less westward movement associated with intensified upstream zonal wind and meridional potential vorticity gradient (PVy) in the North Atlantic mid-high latitudes, which corresponds to a negative height response over the North Atlantic high latitudes. When BKS warming is strong, a positive height response appears in the early winter stratosphere, and its subsequent downward propagation leads to a negative NAO response or increased Greenland blocking events, which reduces zonal wind and PVy in the high latitudes from North Atlantic to Europe, thus enhancing the westward propagation of UB and reducing its local persistence. The transition to the negative NAO phase and the retrogression of UB are not found when numerically suppressing the downward influence of weakened stratospheric polar vortex, suggesting a crucial role of the stratospheric pathway in nonlinear responses of UB to the early winter BKS warming.

A neural-network-enhanced parameter-varying framework for multi-objective model predictive control applied to buildings

Management of the electrical grid is becoming more complex due to the increased penetration of alternative energy generation technologies and a broadening diversity of electric loads. This complexity creates challenges in balancing demand and generation that can increase the potential for grid instabilities. One effective way to address this issue is to leverage previously unexploited demand flexibility through advanced control strategies. In this work, we propose an advanced control method, called adaptive neural parameter-varying model predictive control (ANPV-MPC), to control the temperature and energy consumption of a building via its Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning system. ANPV-MPC combines key ideas in parameter-varying control, adaptive control, and online learning strategies to bridge the gap between computationally efficient linear model predictive control and more accurate nonlinear model predictive control. The novelty in ANPV-MPC is the use of a physics-inspired Bayesian neural network to estimate the coefficients of the parameter-varying linear control model. The Bayesian neural network additionally provides uncertainty estimates, triggering online training to capture evolving building system conditions. We show that ANPV-MPC can approximate the building system dynamics with a 28.39% higher accuracy than traditional linear model predictive control, resulting in 36.23% better control performance without increasing complexity of the optimal control problem. ANPV-MPC also adapts in real time to previously unseen conditions using online learning, further improving its performance.

Joint velocity and density reconstruction of the Universe with nonlinear differentiable forward modeling

Reconstructing the initial conditions of the Universe from late-time observations has the potential to optimally extract cosmological information. Due to the high dimensionality of the parameter space, a differentiable forward model is needed for convergence, and recent advances have made it possible to perform reconstruction with nonlinear models based on galaxy (or halo) positions. In addition to positions, future surveys will provide measurements of galaxies' peculiar velocities through the kinematic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect (kSZ), type Ia supernovae, the fundamental plane relation, and the Tully-Fisher relation. Here we develop the formalism for including halo velocities, in addition to halo positions, to enhance the reconstruction of the initial conditions. We show that using velocity information can significantly improve the reconstruction accuracy compared to using only the halo density field. Here we study this improvement as a function of shot noise, velocity measurement noise, and angle to the line of sight. We also show how halo velocity data can be used to improve the reconstruction of the final nonlinear matter overdensity and velocity fields. We have built our pipeline into the differentiable Particle-Mesh FlowPM package, paving the way to perform field-level cosmological inference with joint velocity and density reconstruction. This is especially useful given the increased ability to measure peculiar velocities in the near future.
