Applications of the method of Monte Carlo to problems in thermal radiation

A summary of the work involving the Monte Carlo method in the solution of problems in thermal radiation transfer is presented, which indicates general methods previously used for solving problems in which radiation is coupled with other modes of energy transfer. Previous work involving radiation in absorbing-emitting media is included. An example is outlined to indicate the use of the Monte Carlo method in the design of a space radiator. Suggestions are given for solution of a complex case incorporating the effects of coupled conduction, convection and radiation, wavelength dependent and selective surfaces, nonisothermal conditions, and strongly directional or nondiffuse emitting and reflecting surfaces. A discussion is given of the factors that may affect convergence, running time, and accuracy of the Monte Carlo solutions and of the advantages and disadvantages of this approach for practical problems. Also discussed are the case of programming for complex problems and the probable machine time requirements of the method.

Mathematical analysis of a Vuilleumier refrigerator.

A comprehensive analysis of the Vuilleumier refrigerator was conducted. This analysis includes the effects of nonisothermal gas heat addition and rejection, hot and cold regenerator inefficiencies, conduction losses, and gas leakage losses. A computer program was written which solves the equations resulting from the analysis. The program calculates internal pressures, temperatures, and gas flow rates as functions of refrigerator crank angle, as well as overall refrigerator cooling load and power input. Comparisons between the program results and available data show good agreement, with a marked improvement over the predictions of the ideal model.

Ablation and radiation coupled viscous hypersonic shock layers, volume 2

A computer program can be used to determine the radiative flux and flux divergence through a nonisothermal planar slab of gas is described. The program considers species typical of air at high temperatures and nylon or carbon phenolic ablation products. The equations solved are for a variable optical depth line and continuum gas model using species cross sections and line widths as the basic data.

Intercomponent momentum transport and electrical conductivity of collisionless plasma

Based on the Lenard-Balescu equation, the interaction integral for the intercomponent momentum transfer in a two-component, collisionless plasma is evaluated in closed form. The distribution functions of the electrons and ions are represented in the form of nonisothermal, displaced Maxwellians corresponding to the 5-moment approximation. As an application, the transport of electrical current in an electric field is discussed for infrasonic up to sonic electron-ion drift velocities.

High density constraint on the entropy instability

The entropy instability squared is a nonisothermal effect which is eliminated by parallel ion pressure at high densities (k sub z lambda sub e 1/2 sq root of m/M), reducing previous growth rate estimates and the range of unstable parameters.

The upper atmosphere of Neptune - An analysis of occultation observations

An analysis of available observations of the April 7, 1968, occultation of BD-17 deg 4388 by Neptune yields upper atmosphere temperatures of about 140 K near the 5 x 10 to the 14th power per cu cm level. The temperature structure of the atmosphere at these levels is complicated and nonisothermal. Diurnal temperature variations are certainly less than 15 K between 0 and 55 deg latitude.
