Need for advanced research reactors for the next-generation reactor physics, analysis tools, and technology

Full text of publication follows. There is an urgent need for design and deployment of advanced research and test reactors in support of design, licensing and operation of advanced power reactors and education of next generation nuclear workforce. Existing research reactors mostly were designed and constructed decades ago with the main objectives of training operators, performing reactor physics experiments, and educating nuclear engineers and scientists. There are already gaps and significant concern about future capabilities for the existing research reactor facilities to address modern instrumentation and/or flexible environments for: performing reactor physics studies for advanced designs which have significantly different core materials forms and compositions, reactor shapes and size; validation of advanced high-fidelity software; development of machine learning algorithms for enhancement of human-machine collaboration in support of reactor monitoring, operation and safeguards; and, effective education of the next-generation workforce. The authors will focus on the need for advanced research reactors to improve and validate fast and accurate simulation tools for high-fidelity modeling and analysis of nuclear reactors in support of their design, optimization, licensing, operation, and monitoring. In the past, simulation tools were limited to relatively coarse models using approximate methodologies that benefited from two main factors: i) allowance for large margins and tolerances; ii) ability to construct prototype (e.g., zero power) reactors for adjustment of approximate methodologies. The next generation reactors have to be designed mainly by using novel high-fidelity computational tools that are accurate and fast, and therefore can be used for parametric studies and uncertainty quantification. To sufficiently demonstrate the accuracy of these tools, advanced research reactors are needed. The authors argue the need for new computational paradigms such as the MRT (Multistage, Response- function Transport) methodology which has resulted in the development of the novel high-fidelity RAPID (Real-time Analysis for Particle-transport and In-situ Detection) code system. Such code systems have to be robust in modeling any complex system, and should be fast and accurate, henceforth their uncertainties can be quantified at reasonable costs. Again, advanced research reactors are needed for the validation of the fidelity and accuracy of new computational tools. (authors)

NGPINT V3: a containerized orchestration Python software for discovery of next-generation protein–protein interactions

Abstract Summary Batch yeast two-hybrid (Y2H) assays, leveraged with next-generation sequencing, have afforded successful innovations for the analysis of protein–protein interactions. NGPINT is a Conda-based software designed to process the millions of raw sequencing reads resulting from Y2H–next-generation interaction screens. Over time, increasing compatibility and dependency issues have prevented clean NGPINT installation and operation. A system-wide update was essential to continue effective use with its companion software, Y2H-SCORES. We present NGPINT V3, a containerized implementation built with both Singularity and Docker, allowing accessibility across virtually any operating system and computing environment. Availability and implementation This update includes streamlined dependencies and container images hosted on Sylabs (https://cloud.sylabs.io/library/schuyler/ngpint/ngpint) and Dockerhub (https://hub.docker.com/r/schuylerds/ngpint), facilitating easier adoption and integration into high-throughput and cloud-computing workflows. Full instructions and software can be also found in the GitHub repository https://github.com/Wiselab2/NGPINT_V3 and Zenodo https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.15256036.

Optimizing flow condensation models for next-generation refrigerants in axial micro-fin aluminum tubes

To support the transition to next-generation refrigerants, accurate modelling of heat transfer and pressure drop is essential for designing efficient heat exchangers. Current models, largely based on traditional refrigerants and unexpanded micro-fin tubes, may not reliably predict performance for new refrigerants and expanded micro-fin geometries. This study evaluates four condensation models using experimental data for six A2L refrigerants: R-32, R-454B, R-454C, R-455A, R-1234yf, and R-1234ze(E). For heat transfer models, the Han and Lee (2005) model initially yields the best accuracy (mean absolute Deviation, MAD = 22.1%). To further improve predictions, a correction factor reduces the Cavallini et al. (2009) model’s MAD from 68.2% to 15.4%, while optimization of the Kedzierski and Goncalves (1997) model achieves a MAD of 13.1%. For pressure drop, the Cavallini et al. (1997) model proves most accurate (MAD = 6.4%), with the simpler Haraguchi et al. (1993) model also effective (MAD = 9.4%). Keywords: Flow condensation models, heat transfer coefficient, frictional pressure drop, next-generation refrigerants, aluminum micro-fin tubes

Radiation Effects in Next Generation Used Nuclear Fuel Reprocessing Strategies

With the global community committed to significantly expanding nuclear energy capacity, the development of efficient used nuclear fuel (UNF) management strategies has become more critical than ever. These strategies are vital to fostering the widespread adoption of closed fuel cycles, which are essential for sustainable nuclear energy production and security. Achieving this ambitious goal necessitates a comprehensive understanding of radiation effects on next-generation technologies, as radiolysis can often limit the longevity and performance of these systems. This seminar will provide an overview of next-generation UNF reprocessing strategies, highlighting the latest advancements and innovative approaches in the field. Particular attention will be given to two key areas of recent research: 1. Radiation robustness and performance of advanced sulfur chloride-based chlorination technologies. We will explore the efficacy of sulfur chloride-based chlorination processes in the presence of surrogate cladding materials, specifically aluminum. These processes have shown promise in the dissolution, decontamination, and recovery of cladding materials for reuse. Detailed findings on how the composition and performance of these sulfur chloride solvents respond to radiation exposure will be discussed. 2. Impacts of metal ion complexation and direct dissolution conditions on monoamide-based reprocessing strategies. We will delve into the time-resolved and dose accumulation effects of irradiation on the direct dissolution of voloxidized uranium and rhenium using N,N-di-(2-ethylhexyl) butyramide (DEHBA) or N,N-di-(2-ethylhexyl)isobutyramide (DEHiBA) in pre-equilibrated n-dodecane solvent. The implications of these interactions on dissolution efficiency, radiolytic stability, and overall process performance will be examined. These studies aim to underscore the importance of understanding radiation effects in the development of next-generation UNF reprocessing technologies and the global transition towards more sustainable and efficient nuclear energy systems.

Design, Control and Application of Next Generation Qubits

Design, Control and Application of Next Generation Qubits Arun Bansil, Northeastern University (Principal Investigator) Claudio Chamon, Boston University (Co-Investigator) Adrian Feiguin, Northeastern University (Co-Investigator) Liang Fu, MIT (Co-Investigator) Eduardo Mucciolo, Univ. of Central Florida (Co-Investigator) Qimin Yan, Temple University (Co-Investigator) The quest for developing technologies for manipulating and storing information quantum mechanically is currently led by approaches that include Josephson-junctions, ion-traps, and qubits generated by defect spins in solids. Topological qubits, however, are inherently more robust to decoherence by environmental effects, and should be able to sprint ahead once practical barriers have been overcome. At the present stage of the development of the field, it is important to explore a variety of architectures and materials beyond the conventional paradigms in order to seed breakthroughs toward building a scalable quantum computer. Our comprehensive theoretical research program involved four interconnected thrusts as follows. • A materials discovery effort in two-dimensional compounds in search of materials to support Majorana zero modes and defect structures suitable as qubits. • Exploration of architectures for topological quantum computation by investigating both superconducting Majorana qubits, and robust platforms for braiding with new “meta-materials” built of arrays of Majorana qubits. • Investigation of properties of hybrid metal-organic qubits based on transition-metal centers in graphene, and molecular crystals of polyaromatic complexes with embedded transition-metal atoms. • Development of tensor-network and semiclassical approaches to study decoherence in the presence of random and dispersive spin baths, and NV centers in diamond. The full spectrum of theoretical and numerical approaches was used to address the goals of this project including first-principles, density-matrix-renormalization group, tensor networks, and data-driven high-throughput approaches using materials database and machine-learning.
