Thermophysical properties data on graphite/polyimide composite materials

Experimental data for the thermal conductivity, thermal expansion, specific heat, and emittance of laminates of HTS/NR 150B2 and HTS/PMR 15 are presented. Measurements were made over the temperature range 116 K to 588 K. Results for the two materials were similar with some differences attributable to laminate quality. Higher expansion coefficients for the HTS/PMR 15 specimens in the resin-dominated directions indicate a higher coefficient for PMR 15 than NR 150B2.

Screening of high temperature adhesives for large area bonding

High temperature-resistant adhesive systems were screened for processability, mechanical and physical properties, operational capability at 589 K (600 F), and the ability to produce large area bonds of high quality in fabricating Space Shuttle components. The adhesives consisted primarily of polyimide systems, including FM34B-18, NR-150B2 (DuPont), PMR-15, LARC-13, LARC-160, Thermid 600, and AI-1130L (AMOCA). The processing studies included preparation of polyimide resins, fabrication of film adhesives, development of lay-up and cure procedures, fabrication of honeycomb sandwich panels, and fabrication of mid-plane bonded panels in joints up to 30.5 cm (12 in.) wide. The screening program included tests for tack and drape properties, reticulation and filleting characteristics, ability to produce void-free or low porosity bonds in mid-plane bonded panels, out-time stability, lap shear strength, climbing drum peel strength, and glass transition temperature (Tg). This paper describes the processing methods developed and the test results.

Thermal perturbation of the Sun

An investigation of thermal perturbations of the solar convective zone via changes in the mixing length parameter were carried out, with a view toward understanding the possible solar radius and luminosity changes cited in the literature. The results show that: (a) a single perturbation of alpha is probably not the cause of the solar radius change and (b) the parameter W = d lambda nR./d lambda nL. can not be characterized by a single value, as implied in recent work.

High-temperature resins

The basic chemistry, cure processes, properties, and applications of high temperature resins known as polyimides are surveyed. Condensation aromatic polymides are prepared by reacting aromatic diamines with aromatic dianhydrides, aromatic tetracarboxylic acids, or with dialkyl esters of aromatic tetracarboxylic acids, depending on the intended end use. The first is for coatings or films while the latter two are more suitable for polyimide matrix resins. Prepreg solutions are made by dissolving reactants in an aprotic solvent, and advances in the addition of a diamine on the double bond and radical polymerization of the double bond are noted to have yielded a final cure product with void-free characteristics. Attention is given to properties of the Skybond, Pyralin, and NR-150B polyimide prepreg materials and characteristics of aging in the NP-150 polyimides. Finally, features of the NASA-developed PMR polyimides are reviewed.

Previously announced in STAR as N80-14197

A critical study of the role of the surface oxide layer in titanium bonding

Scanning electron microscope/X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (SEM/XPS) analysis of fractured adhesively bonded Ti 6-4 samples is discussed. The text adhesives incuded NR 056X polyimide, polypheylquinoxaline (PPQ), and LARC-13 polyimide. Differentiation between cohesive and interfacial failure was based on the absence of presence of a Ti 2p XPS photopeak. In addition, the surface oxide layer on Ti-(6A1-4V) adherends is characterized and bond strength and durability are addressed. Bond durability in various environmental conditions is discussed.

Temperature-controlled quartz crystal microbalance measurements on Space Transport System (STS-2)

The purpose of the Temperature-Controlled Quartz Crystal Microbalance (TQCM) system on STS-2 was to measure condensible molecular flux in the payload bay of the Space Shuttle as a function of temperature, direction, and time. Five quartz crystal microbalance sensors were located in the IECM to measure molecular adsorption in each of the Orbiter axes, +X (fore), -X (aft), +Y (starboard), -Y (port), and -Z (up, perpendicular to payload bay). The temperature of each sensor was controlled by a thermoelectric device so contamination could be measured as a function of four preset temperatures: +30, 0, -30, and -60 C. When orbital altitude was reached, the TQCM sensors began their orbital measuring cycle routine. The sensors were commanded to 80 C for 30 min, which was used as an initial clean-up. They were then stepped through a program of 2-nr collection periods at each temperature with a 30-min, 80 C period between each collection period. The collection periods progressed in descending order from +30 to -60 C and, then the cycle was repeated. Since the STS-2 orbital phase lasted approximately 53 hrs, the TQCM system completed four cycles and was in the fifth when the mission was terminated.

High-temperature Adhesive Development and Evaluation

High-temperature adhesive systems are evaluated for short and long-term stability at temperatures ranging from 232C to 427C. The resins selected for characterization include: NASA Langley developed polyphenylquinoxaline (PPQ), and commercially available polyimides (PI). The primary method of bond testing is single lap shear. The PPQ candidates are evaluated on 6A1-4V titanium adherends with chromic acid anodize and phosphate fluoride etch surface preparations. The remaining adhesives are evaluated on 15-5 PH stainless steel with a sulfuric acid anodize surface preparation. Preliminary data indicate that the PPQ adhesives tested have stability to 3000 hours at 450F with chromic acid anodize surface preparation. Additional studies are continuing to attempt to improve the PPQ's high-performance by formulating adhesive films with a boron filler and utilizing the phosphate fluoride surface preparation on titanium. Evaluation of the polyimide candidates on stainless-steel adherends indicates that the FM-35 (American Cyanamid), PMR-15 (U.S. Polymeric/Ferro), TRW partially fluorinated polyimide and NR 150B2S6X (DuPont) adhesives show sufficient promise to justify additional testing.

Polyimide matrix resins for up to 700 deg F service

TRW is in the process of data accumulation that strongly indicates that incorporation of the perfluorsisopropylidene linkage in molecular structures other than those employed in DU Pont's NR-150B polyimides likewise yield polymers demonstrating extremely high thermo-oxidative stability. Polyimide synthetic and characterization studies conducted to date on new polymers incorporating the perfluoroisopropylidene linkage are presented and discussed.

Direct solar-pumped iodine laser amplifier

The improvement on the collection system of the Tarmarack Solar Simulator beam was attemped. The basic study of evaluating the solid state laser materials for the solar pumping and also the work to construct a kinetic model algorithm for the flashlamp pumped iodine lasers were carried out. It was observed that the collector cone worked better than the lens assembly in order to collect the solar simulator beam and to focus it down to a strong power density. The study on the various laser materials and their lasing characteristics shows that the neodymium and chromium co-doped gadolinium scandium gallium garnet (Nr:Cr:GSGG) may be a strong candidate for the high power solar pumped solid state laser crystal. On the other hand the improved kinetic modeling for the flashlamp pumped iodine laser provides a good agreement between the theoretical model and the experimental data on the laser power output, and predicts the output parameters of a solar pumped iodine laser.

Multiple-wavelength analysis of energy release during a solar flare - Thermal and nonthermal electron populations

Collaborative solar investigations by Tufts University and the Observatoire de Paris have resulted in simultaneous radio observations with the Very Large Array (VLA) and the Nancay Radioheliograph (NR), comparisons of this radio data with X-ray observations, and theoretical interpretations of the dominant radiation mechanisms during a weak impulsive solar flare observed on May 28, 1988. The VLA has mapped the flaring structures at time intervals of 3.3 s, showing that the preflash and flash-phase components of the impulsive emission originate in spatially separated sources. The 20.7 cm preflash source is ascribed to thermal gyroresonance emission from coronal loops with typical magnetic field strengths of up to 270 G; this emission is associated with heating and exhibits no detectable hard X-ray radiation above 30 keV. The flash-phase 20.7 cm source and the hard X-ray emission are attributed to nonthermal electrons in the coronal and chromospheric portions of a magnetic loop. The combination of imaging observations at 20.7 and 91.6 cm excludes emission from a confined hot plasma during the flash phase.

Improving processing and toughness of a high performance composite matrix through an interpenetrating polymer network. VI

The use of a semiinterpenetrating polymer network (SIPN) of the high-performance polyimide NR-150B2 to reduce brittleness and improve processability in the highly crosslinked acetylene-terminated polyimides Thermid LR-600, AL-600, MC-600, and FA-700 is described. The theoretical basis of the SIPN process is reviewed; the preparation and characterization of the neat SIPN resins and unidirectional graphite-fiber composites are explained; and the results are presented in extensive tables, graphs, and micrographs and discussed in detail. Significant increases in fracture energy were observed with SIPN, from 93 J/sq m for unmodified LR-600 to 283-603 J/sq m for the SIPN materials; the room-temperature flexural strength of the unidirectional composites also increased, from 1344 MPa for an unmodified MC-600 composite to 2020-1751 MPa for the SIPN composites. The potential applicability of SIPN-based composites to aerospace structures and electronic components is indicated.

Helicopter far-field acoustic levels as a function of reduced main-rotor advancing blade-tip Mach number

During the design of a helicopter, the weight, engine, rotor speed, and rotor geometry are given significant attention when considering the specific operations for which the helicopter will be used. However, the noise radiated from the helicopter and its relationship to the design variables is currently not well modeled with only a limited set of full-scale field test data to study. In general, limited field data have shown that reduced main-rotor advancing blade-tip Mach numbers result in reduced far-field noise levels. The status of a recent helicopter noise research project is reviewed. It is designed to provide flight experimental data which may be used to further understand helicopter main-rotor advancing blade-tip Mach number effects on far-field acoustic levels. Preliminary results are presented relative to tests conducted with a Sikorsky S-76A helicopter operating with both the rotor speed and the flight speed as the control variable. The rotor speed was operated within the range of 107 to 90 percent NR at nominal forward speeds of 35, 100, and 155 knots.

Theoretical investigation of gas-surface interactions

The investigation into the appearance of intruder states from the negative continuum when some of the two-electron integrals were omitted was completed. The work shows that, provided all integrals involving core contracted functions in an atomic general contraction are included, or that the core functions are radially localized, meaningful results are obtained and intruder states do not appear. In the area of program development, the Dirac-Hartree-Fock (DHF) program for closed-shell polyatomic molecules was extended to permit Kramers-restricted open-shell DHF calculations with one electron in an open shell or one hole in a closed shell, or state-averaged DHF calculations over several particle or hole doublet states. One application of the open-shell code was to the KO molecule. Another major area of program development is the transformation of integrals from the scalar basis in which they are generated to the 2-spinor basis employed in parts of the DHF program, and hence to supermatrix form. Particularly concerning the omission of small component integrals, and with increase in availability of disk space, it is now possible to consider transforming the integrals. The use of ordered integrals, either in the scalar basis or in the 2-spinor basis, would considerably speed up the construction of the Fock matrix, and even more so if supermatrices were constructed. A considerable amount of effort was spent on analyzing the integral ordering and tranformation for the DHF program. The work of assessing the reliability of the relativistic effective core potentials (RECPs) was continued with calculation of the group IV monoxides. The perturbation of the metal atom provided by oxygen is expected to be larger than that provided by hydrogen and thus provide a better test of the qualification of the RECPs. Calculations on some platinum hydrides were carried out at nonrelativistic (NR), perturbation theory (PT) and DHF levels. Reprints of four papers describing this work are included.

Improving processing and toughness of a high performance composite matrix through an interpenetrating polymer network. VI

A simultaneous semi-interpenetrating polymer network (semi-IPN) concept is presented which combines easy-to-process, but brittle, thermosetting polyimides with tough, but difficult to process, linear thermoplastic polyimides. The combination results in a semi-IPN with the easy processability of a thermoset and good toughness of a thermoplastic. Four simultaneous semi-IPN systems were developed from commercially available NR-150B2 combined with each of the four Thermid materials (LR-600, AL-600, MC-600, and FA-700). It is concluded that there is a significant improvement in resin fracture toughness of Thermid-polyimide-based semi-IPN systems and some improvement in composite microcracking resistance compared to Thermid LR-600. Excellent composite mechanical properties have been achieved. These new semi-IPN materials have the potential to be used as composite matrices, adhesives, and molding materials.

Geometrically nonlinear design sensitivity analysis on parallel-vector high-performance computers

Parallel-vector solution strategies for generation and assembly of element matrices, solution of the resulted system of linear equations, calculations of the unbalanced loads, displacements, stresses, and design sensitivity analysis (DSA) are all incorporated into the Newton Raphson (NR) procedure for nonlinear finite element analysis and DSA. Numerical results are included to show the performance of the proposed method for structural analysis and DSA in a parallel-vector computer environment.
