Photoelectrochemical Nitrogen Reduction to Ammonia on Cupric and Cuprous Oxide Photocathodes
Photoelectrochemical N 2 reduction enables the production of NH 3 under ambient conditions using water as the hydrogen source. Furthermore, by utilizing solar energy, photoelectrochemical N 2 reduction can significantly reduce the energy input required for N 2 reduction. In this study, photoelectrochemical N 2 production was investigated using CuO and Cu 2 O photocathodes that are known to be poorly catalytic for water reduction, the major reaction competing with N 2 reduction. When tested under simulated solar illumination with isotopically labeled 15 N 2 in 0.1 M KOH solution, the CuO and Cu 2 O photocathodes produced 15 NH 3 with a Faradaic efficiency of 17% and 20% at 0.6 V and 0.4 V vs. RHE, respectively. These potentials are significantly more positive than the thermodynamic reduction potential of N 2 , which demonstrates how the use of photoexcited electrons in the CuO and Cu 2 O photocathodes can reduce the energy input required for NH 3 production. Here, the use of photoexcited electrons in these photocathodes for N 2 reduction, water reduction, and photocorrosion was carefully examined.

Spectral fitting, shock layer modeling, and production of nitrogen oxides and excited nitrogen
An analysis was made of N2 emission from 8.72 MJ/kg shock layer at 2.54, 1.91, and 1.27 cm positions and vibrational state distributions, temperatures, and relative electronic state populations was obtained from data sets. Other recorded arc jet N2 and air spectral data were reviewed and NO emission characteristics were studied. A review of operational procedures of the DSMC code was made. Information on other appropriate codes and modifications, including ionization, were made as well as a determination of the applicability of codes reviewed to task requirement. A review was also made of computational procedures used in CFD codes of Li and other codes on JSC computers. An analysis was made of problems associated with integration of specific chemical kinetics applicable to task into CFD codes.
Evolution of isotopic signatures in lunar-regolith nitrogen - Noble gases and nitrogen in grain-size fractions from regolith breccia 79035
Ilmenite and pyroxene grain-size separates from 79035 were analyzed for trapped N; the ilmenite was also analyzed for trapped Xe. Ilmenite N contains two or more isotopically distinct trapped components differing in release temperature and therefore plausibly in implantation energy. The isotopically light, higher-temperature (higher-energy?) component has a delta N-15 value equal to -180 percent, significantly above the minimum value observed in bulk 79035, suggesting that parts of 79035 were exposed on the lunar surface earlier than the ilmenite. Using trapped Ar-40/Ar-36 and cosmogenic Ne-21 (Benkert, 1989) a compaction age of about 1 Ga was derived for the ilmenite. This implies a considerably more recent exposure than previously thought, and suggests that the long-term change in delta N-15 of regolith N was more rapid than generally believed. Comparison of these results with those for black/orange glass from 74001/74002 (compaction age 3.7 Ga; delta N-15 in the range -36 to +18 percent (Kerridge et al., 1991) indicates that the long-term trend may have followed a complex evolutionary path. Data for 79035 pyroxenes are consistent with the ilmenite compaction age but suggest a more complex exposure history.

Effective Potential Energies and Transport Cross Sections for Atom-Molecule Interactions of Nitrogen and Nitrogen
The potential energy surfaces for H2-N and N2-N interactions are calculated by accurate ab initio methods and applied to determine transport data. The results confirm that an effective potential energy for accurately determining transport properties can be calculated using a single orientation. A simple method is developed to determine the dispersion coefficients of effective potential energies Effective potential energies required for O2-O collisions are determ=ined. The H2-N, N2-N, O2-H, and O2-O collision integrals are calculated and tabulated for a large range of temperatures. The theoretical values of the N2-N and O2-O diffusion coefficients compare well with measured data available at room temperature.
