Ammonia-parent ion reaction at low energies, comparing numerical and experimental capture cross sections
The numerical capture cross section is calculated from the capture ratio, defined as the fraction of trajectories reaching a prescribed minimum separation of 3 A. The calculated capture cross sections for a rotational temperature of 77 K suggest large reaction cross sections in 80 K experiments for the large dipole-moment target, methyl cyanide.

The 6450 A ammonia absorption band in the atmosphere of Jupiter was observed during the summers of 1973 and 1974. High-dispersion spectra of this band were obtained and analyzed on a line-by-line basis to derive ammonia abundances in the Jovian atmosphere. The abundances determined this way show strikingly large fluctuations.
Absolute line-center frequencies for eleven lines of ammonia in near coincidence with CO2-laser transitions have been determined to accuracies of + or -3 MHz by infrared heterodyne detection. These results were obtained by heterodyning a blackbody with a stable grating-tuned CO2 gas laser. A discussion of the apparatus and method of calculation, including error analysis, is presented. With these accurately determined line-center positions, the ammonia molecule will be a useful secondary-frequency standard for diode-laser spectroscopy in the 11-micron wavelength region.
Tests show that Gold-Copper-Nickel alloy is compatible with ammonia systems. Joining tubes by brazing has advantages such as reducing chances of excessive grain growth in base metal, saving weight, and cleanliness.

The optical constants (n(r), n(i)) for solid ammonia in the cubic phase from 0.14 to 200 microns are displayed in both graphical and tabular form. The refractive indices n(r) were obtained from previously published spectra of the absorption index n(i) by means of the Kramers-Kronig dispersion relation. Mie scattering parameters in the same spectral range are graphically illustrated for particle sizes from 1 to 100 microns. An application of these results to the atmosphere of the planet Jupiter is also presented.

Effects of H(-) production in a multicusp ion source are measured by separately mixing with hydrogen small amounts (0.33-10 percent) of water, ammonia, methane, and hydrazine these are molecules which produce large amounts of H(-) via dissociative attachment (DA) resonances at higher electron energies. The mixing was done in a separate reservoir, with careful measurement of individual pressures. Experimental enhancements of 1.4 and less were observed, whereas calculated enhancements, using accurate DA cross sections for ground-state H2, should have produced factors of 1.5, 3.0, 1.3, and 2.4 enhancements for water, ammonia methane, and hydrazine, respectively, at a mean electron energy of 1.0 eV in the extraction region. The difference is accounted for by including, in the enhancement calculation, vibrationally and rotationally excited H2 molecules, with v-double prime = 5-11, and J-double prime = 0-5, and the large DA cross sections for the excited H2 (v-double prime, J-double prime). The relative populations of H2 (v-double prime, J-double prime) thus obtained are found to be substantially smaller than those predicted by theoretical calculations. The effect on H(-) current was also studied by mixing small amounts of SF6 with H2. A 1.5 percent mixture was found to reduce the H(-) output by one half.
