On the redistribution of charge in La 0.7 Sr 0.3 CrO 3 /La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 multilayer thin films

The atomic and electronic structures of La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 (LSMO)/La 0.7 Sr 0.3 CrO 3 (LSCO) multilayer thin films are investigated using aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) imaging and spectroscopy. Atomic resolution high angle annular dark-field reveals that LSMO layers have an expanded out-of-plane lattice parameter compared to compressed LSCO layers, contrasting with x-ray diffraction measurements. The expansion is found to result from preferential oxygen vacancy formation in LSMO during STEM sample preparation as determined by electron energy-loss spectroscopy. The La/Sr atom column intensity is also found to oscillate by about 4% between the LSMO and LSCO layers, indicative of La/Sr concentration variation. Using energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy in combination with image simulations, we confirm the La/Sr inhomogeneity and elucidate the origin of charge redistribution within the multilayer. These results illuminate the sensitivity of the technique to subtle structural, chemical, and electronic features that can arise to compensate charge imbalances in complex oxide heterostructures.

Spin dynamics and relaxation in 7.6 nm thin film of La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 /SrTiO 3 : ac magnetic susceptibility and magnetic viscosity investigations

Analysis of the results from our investigations of the temperature dependence of ac susceptibilities (χ' and χ'') and magnetic viscosity in a 7.6 nm thin film of La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 grown on SrTiO 3 (001) substrate is presented. The Curie temperature (T C ) of this film is magnetic field (H) dependent, varying as [T C (H) - T C (0)] ~ H n with T C (0) = 270 K and n = 0.15. Temperature dependence of χ' and χ'' measured at ac frequencies f m in the range of 0.1–10 kHz shows a broad peak near 230 K associated with the blocking temperature (T B ) of spin clusters present in the 1.4 nm surface layer and a frequency dependent peak near 270 K associated with T C . The mean relaxation time τ determined from the Cole–Cole analysis of the temperature dependent χ' and χ'' is shown to fit the Vogel–Fulcher law: τ = τ 0 exp[ΔE/k B (T - T 0 )] with T 0 = 245 K, ΔE/k B = 270 K = T C and τ 0 = 1.2 x 10 -9 s. Magnetic viscosity S (measured in H = 0 for a sample cooled in H = 50 Oe) determined from the fit to the magnetization: M (t)= M (0) – S ln t, with time t up to 2 h, shows a peak at 230 K above which M (2 h) switches to negative values for temperatures up to T C (0). It is argued that this negative magnetization results from an interaction between the superparamagnetic spin clusters and the ferromagnetic phase, both being present in the temperature range of T B < T < T C .

Interface-driven magnetic anisotropy in relaxed La 0.7 Sr 0.3 CrO 3 /La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 heterostructures on MgO

We investigate the structural and magnetic properties of La 0.7 Sr 0.3 CrO 3 /La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 (LSMO) heterostructures grown on (001)-oriented MgO by molecular beam epitaxy. Due to the large film-substrate lattice mismatch, strain relaxation is found to occur within the first 2–3 unit cells (uc) of the film as evidenced by reflection high energy electron diffraction and high-resolution synchrotron x-ray reciprocal space mapping. Furthermore, we find that the presence of the LSCO spacer and capping layers leads to ferromagnetism in ultra-thin LSMO layers with thicknesses of the order of 2 uc with the magnetic easy axis oriented in the film plane. Net magnetic moments of 1.4 and 2.4 μ B /Mn are measured for (2 uc LSCO/2 uc LSMO) and (2 uc LSCO/4 uc LSMO) superlattices, respectively, by superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry. The effective magnetic anisotropy of the relaxed (2 uc LSCO/4 uc LSMO) heterostructure is found to be an order of magnitude higher than bulk LSMO highlighting the critical role of interfacial interactions in tuning magnetic anisotropy at complex oxide interfaces.

Strain- and thickness-dependent magnetic properties of epitaxial La 0.67 Sr 0.33 CoO 3 /La 0.67 Sr 0.33 MnO 3 bilayers

Magnetic properties and interfacial phenomena of epitaxial perovskite oxides depend sensitively on parameters such as film thickness and strain state. In this work, epitaxial La0 .67 Sr 0.33 CoO 3 (LSCO)/La 0.67 Sr 0.33 MnO 3 (LSMO) bilayers were grown on NdGaO 3 (NGO) and LaAlO 3 (LAO) substrates with a fixed LSMO thickness of 6 nm, and LSCO thickness (t LSCO ) varying from 2 to 10 nm. Soft x-ray magnetic spectroscopy revealed that magnetically active Co 2+ ions that strongly coupled to the LSMO layer were observed below a critical t LSCO for bilayers grown on both substrates. On LAO substrates, this critical thickness was 2 nm, above which the formation of Co 2+ ions was quickly suppressed leaving only a soft LSCO layer with mixed valence Co 3+ /Co 4+ ions. The magnetic properties of both LSCO and LSMO layers displayed strong t LSCO dependence. This critical t LSCO increased to 4 nm on NGO substrates, and the magnetic properties of only the LSCO layer displayed t LSCO dependence. A non-magnetic layer characterized by Co 3+ ions and with a thickness below 2 nm exists at the LSCO/substrate interface for both substrates. Therefore, the results contribute to the understanding of interfacial exchange spring behavior needed for applications in next generation spintronic and magnetic memory devices.

Study of structural, transport and magneto-crystalline anisotropy in La 1-x Sr x MnO 3 (0.30 ≤ x ≤ 0.40) perovskite manganites

In this paper we present structural, transport, magnetic and magneto-crystalline anisotropy of La 1–x Sr x MnO 3 (х = 0.30, 0.33, 0.36, and 0.40) synthesized using the solid-state reaction method. The X-ray diffraction pattern of the samples is well indexed to the rhombohedral structure with R 3 - c space group. Lattice parameters and unit cell volume are found to decrease monotonically upon increasing Sr 2+ concentration at La 3+ site. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirms the presence of Mn 4+ and Mn 3+ , the ratio of which (Mn 4+ /Mn 3+ ) increases from 0.44 to 0.64 with increasing Sr 2+ concentration. From the ρ(T) and M(T) data analysis, we find that T MI and M S are larger for x = 0.33 composition, suggesting a weakening of the double-exchange interaction due to competing super-exchange interactions in x = 0.30, 0.36 and 0.40 samples. We calculated MCA constant (K 1 ) by fitting the saturation magnetisation data at a higher magnetic field using the law of approach model, M = M S [1-a/H-b/H 2 ]-χH with K 1 2 = (105/8)bMs 2 and is in the order of 10 5 erg/cm 3 .

Magnetic anisotropy and spin scattering in (La 2/3 Sr 1/3 )MnO 3 /CaRuO 3 bilayers

Complex ferromagnetic oxides have been identified as possible candidate materials for sources of spin currents. Here we study bilayers of ferromagnetic (La 2/3 Sr 1/3 )MnO 3 (LSMO) and metallic CaRuO 3 (CRO) on LSAT substrates as a model system for spin pumping. Ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) measurements of these bilayers show evidence of spin pumping across the interface in the form of an increase in Gilbert damping with the addition of CRO. FMR indicates that the presence of CRO modifies the magnetic anisotropy of the LSMO. By increasing CRO thickness, we find a reduction of the out-of-plane anisotropy and simultaneous rotation of the easy axis within the plane, from the $\langle$110$\rangle$ to $\langle$100$\rangle$ axis. The evolution of magnetic anisotropy determined by FMR disagrees with that measured by bulk SQUID magnetometry and is accompanied by structural distortions in the LSMO layer as measured by x-ray diffraction, thus suggesting a change in magnetic anisotropy attributed to structural distortions imposed on LSMO by CRO. These results suggest that while LSMO and CRO remain promising candidates for efficient pure spin current generation and detection, respectively, epitaxial integration of perovskites will cause additional changes which must be accounted for in spintronics applications.

Persistent structural distortion for anticipated improper ferroelectricity in ultrathin h-Lu 1− x Ca x MnO 3 films

Improper ferroelectricity in hexagonal rare-earth manganites (h-RMnO 3 , R = Ho–Lu, Y, Sc) arises from a geometric distortion as the primary order parameter, resilient to depolarizing fields and promising for ultrathin ferroelectric devices. However, the substrate-induced interface clamping effect, which suppresses the geometric distortion in the sub-nanometer regime, has thus far hindered the realization of two-dimensional improper ferroelectrics. This study demonstrates that doping with calcium can enhance ferroelectric structural distortion in h-LuMnO 3 thin films. Compressively strained h-Lu 1−x Ca x MnO 3 (x = 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5) epitaxial thin films were stabilized on sapphire substrates using an h-ScFeO 3 buffer layer. We have found that the interface clamping effect is entirely overcome when the doping concentration reaches x ⩾ 0.2, establishing a potential quasi-2D ferroelectric system with a remarkably high estimated structural transition temperature of larger than 1200 K inferred indirectly from temperature-resolved reflection high-energy electron diffraction. This finding suggests a general strain engineering strategy to enhance improper ferroelectricity in hexagonal manganites.

Properties of La 0.7 Ca 0.3 MnO 3 under extreme tensile strain

The complex phase diagram of manganites with simultaneously active spin, charge, orbital, and lattice degrees of freedom continues providing surprises. In a recent groundbreaking experiment, membranes of the perovskite manganite La 0.7 Ca 0.3 MnO 3 (LCMO) deposited on a flexible polymer layer were strained up to 8% [S. S. Hong et al., Science 368, 71 (2020)], much more than achieved by regular strain induced by a rigid substrate. By increasing this strain, a metal-insulator transition was reported. Here we reproduce the results of the experiments using Monte Carlo simulations of the two-orbital double-exchange model including Jahn-Teller distortions at hole density x=1/3. The full phase diagram with varying temperature and Jahn-Teller coupling λ is presented. When the bandwidth W of mobile electrons is reduced, thus when the effective Jahn-Teller coupling λ/W is increased, a metal-insulator transition is found in our simulations, between a ferromagnetic metallic state with uniform charge distribution and an insulator with diagonal charge stripes that retains its ferromagnetic character. In between the hole-rich diagonals, staggered orbital order occurs. We also report resistivity and magnetization measurements alongside with spin correlations and charge structure factors. Our overall conclusions are in agreement with the recent experimental and density functional theory results by Hong et al., and we confirm much earlier ground state predictions of striped ferromagnetic order using energy optimization techniques by T. Hotta et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 86, 4922 (2001)]. The experimental observation of one of the states predicted by theory suggests that diagonal stripes could be achieved at other hole densities as well, such as x=1/4, if LCMO membranes with that hole doping were subject to similar strains.

Ab initio self-energy embedding for the photoemission spectra of NiO and MnO

The accurate ab initio simulation of periodic solids with strong correlations is one of the grand challenges of condensed matter. While mature methods exist for weakly correlated solids, the ab initio description of strongly correlated systems is an active field of research. In this work, we show results for the single-particle spectral function of the two correlated $\textit{d}$-electron solids NiO and MnO from self-energy embedding theory. Unlike earlier work, the theory does not use any adjustable parameters and is fully ab initio, while being able to treat both the strong correlation and the nonlocal screening physics of these materials. Here, we derive the method, discuss aspects of the embedding and choices of physically important orbitals, and compare our results to x-ray and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy as well as bremsstrahlung-isochromat spectroscopy.

Ca 2 MnO 4 structural path: Following the negative thermal expansion at the local scale

The oxygen octahedral rotations in Ca 2 MnO 4 , the first member of the CaO(CaMnO 3 )n Ruddlesden-Popper family, is probed through a set of complementary techniques, including temperature-dependent neutron and x-ray diffraction, combined with local probe studies and ab initio calculations. Here we demonstrate the enhancement of the uniaxial negative thermal expansion coefficient from -1.26 ± 0.25 to -21 ± 1.8 ppm/K at the second order I4 1 /acd to I4/mmm structural phase transition, providing direct evidence for the corkscrew atomic mechanism. We establish, also, that the predicted I4/mmm high symmetry is attained around 1050 K. At lower temperatures, within the 10–1000 K temperature range, our first-principles calculations and detailed analysis of the Ca local environment reveals that the reported Aba2 structural phase, coexisting with the I4 1 /acd one, cannot describe correctly this compound. On the other hand, our data allow for the coexistence of the locally identical I4 1 /acd and Acam structural phases.

Giant linear magnetoelectric effect at the morphotropic phase boundary of epitaxial Sr 0.5 Ba 0.5 MnO 3 films

First-principles calculations are conducted to compute linear magnetoelectric coupling coefficients in epitaxial (001) Sr 0.5 Ba 0.5 MnO 3 films. A large enhancement of different linear magnetoelectric elements is found in a strained-induced morphotropic phase boundary region. Such enhancement is demonstrated to originate from the behavior of the dielectric susceptibility, thanks to a simple phenomenological model that is presently shown to be relevant and accurate. Finally, this work can thus provide a promising approach towards designing highly desired single-phase multiferroic with a colossal magnetoelectric conversion.

Extreme tensile strain states in La 0.7 Ca 0.3 MnO 3 membranes

A defining feature of emergent phenomena in complex oxides is the competition and cooperation between ground states. In manganites, the balance between metallic and insulating phases can be tuned by the lattice; extending the range of lattice control would enhance the ability to access other phases. We stabilized uniform extreme tensile strain in nanoscale La 0.7 Ca 0.3 MnO 3 membranes, exceeding 8% uniaxially and 5% biaxially. Uniaxial and biaxial strain suppresses the ferromagnetic metal at distinctly different strain values, inducing an insulator that can be extinguished by a magnetic field. Electronic structure calculations indicate that the insulator consists of charge-ordered Mn 4+ and Mn 3+ with staggered strain-enhanced Jahn-Teller distortions within the plane. This highly tunable strained membrane approach provides a broad opportunity to design and manipulate correlated electron states.

Improving the Long-term Cycle Performance of xLi 2 MnO 3 ·(1-x)LiMeO 2 /Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 Cells via Prelithiation and Electrolyte Engineering

Toward the development of high energy density and long lifetime batteries for behind-the-meter storage (BTMS) applications, Li- and Mn-rich layered oxide cathode (xLi 2 MnO 3 ·(1-x)LiMeO 2 , Me = Ni, Mn, and etc., LMR-NM) and Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 (LTO) anode system was examined. To mitigate the major degradation mechanisms at each electrode (i.e., loss of Li inventory (LLI) at the anode and transition metal dissolution and oxygen release at the cathode), two approaches were taken—prelithiating the LTO electrode and varying the electrolyte solvent compositions. The effect of prelithiation and electrolyte engineering on the long-term cycle performance of LMR-NM/LTO cells were systematically evaluated via electrochemical analyses and post-mortem characterizations. By using a prelithiated LTO anode and supplying additional Li to the system, the capacity retention of LMR-NM/LTO system was improved. The degree of enhancement was dependent on the types of electrolytes used, as their decomposition products determined the level of LLI. With increased capacity retention, however, the cathode was utilized to a greater extent, resulting in more severe loss of the cathode active material. Thus, all degradation mechanisms should be considered comprehensively when designing high performance LMR-NM/LTO cells to account for their complex interplay.

Electrodynamics of photo-carriers in multiferroic Eu 0.75 Y 0.25 MnO 3

Understanding and controlling the antiferromagnetic order in multiferroic materials on an ultrafast time scale is a long standing area of interest, due to their potential applications in spintronics and ultrafast magnetoelectric switching. We present an optical pump-terahertz (THz) probe study on multiferroic Eu 0.75 Y 0.25 MnO 3 . The optical pump predominantly excites the d-d transitions of the Mn 3+ ions, and the temporal evolution of the pump-induced transient conductivity is measured with a subsequent THz pulse. Two distinct, temperature-dependent decay times are revealed. The shorter relaxation time corresponds to spin-lattice thermalization, while the longer one is ascribed to electron-hole recombination. A spin-selection rule in the relaxation process is proposed in the magnetic phase. Slight suppression of the electromagnons was observed after the optical pump pulse within the spin-lattice thermalization time scale. These observed fundamental magnetic processes can shed light on ultrafast control of magnetism and photoinduced phase transitions in multiferroics.

Correlation of the Lattice Distortion and Polaron Conduction with the Physical Properties of La (sub 0.7)Ca(sub 0.3)MnO(sub 3) and La(sub 0.5)Ca(sub 0.5)CoO(sub 3) Epitaxial Films

The effects of lattice distortion on the physical properties of La (sub 0.7)Ca(sub 0.3)MnO(sub 3) and La(sub 0.5)Ca(sub 0.5)CoO(sub 3) films are investigated. Our results suggest that larger substrate-induced lattice distortion gives rise to larger zero-field resistivity and larger negative magnetoresistance.

Effects of Lattice Distortion and Jahn-Teller Coupling on the Magnetoresistance of La(sub 0.7)Ca(sub 0.3)MnO(sub 3) and La(sub 0.5)Ca(sub 0.5)CoO(sub 3) Epitaxial Films

Studies of La(sub 0.7)Ca(sub 0.3)MnO(sub 3) epitaxial films on substrates with a range of lattice constants reveal two dominant contributions to the occurence of colossal negative magnetoresistance (CMR) in these manganites:...We therefore suggest that lattice polaron conduction associated with Jahn-Teller coupling is essential for the occurence of CMR, and that lattice distortion further enhances the CMR effect in the manganites.
