Yamato 74013 is one of 29 paired diogenites having granoblastic textures. The Ar-39 - Ar-40 age of Y-74097 is approximately 1100 Ma. Rb-Sr and Sm-Nd analyses of Y-74013, -74037, -74097, and -74136 suggested that multiple young metamorphic events disturbed their isotopic systems. Masuda et al. reported that REE abundances were heterogeneous even within the same sample (Y-74010) for sample sizes less than approximately 2 g. Both they and Nyquist et al. reported data for some samples showing significant LREE enrichment. In addition to its granoblastic texture, Y-74013 is characterized by large, isolated clots of chromite up to 5 mm in diameter. Takeda et al. suggested that these diogenites originally represented a single or very small number of coarse orthopyroxene crystals that were recrystallized by shock processes. They further suggested that initial crystallization may have occurred very early within the deep crust of the HED parent body. Here we report the chronology of Y-74013 as recorded in chronometers based on long-lived Rb-87 and Sm-147, intermediate- lived Sm-146, and short-lived Mn-53.
Apatite is a common mineral in terrestrial, planetary, and asteroidal materials. It is commonly used for geochronology (U-Pb), sensing volatiles (H, F, Cl, S), and can concentrate rare earth elements (REE) during magmatic fractionation and in general. Some recent studies have shown that some kinds of phosphate may fractionate Hf and W and that Mn may be redox sensitive. Experimental studies have focused on REE and other lithophile elements and at simplified or not specified oxygen fugacities. There is a dearth of partitioning data for chalcophile, siderophile and other elements between apatite and melt. Here we carry out several experiments at variable fO2 to study the partitioning of a broad range of trace elements. We compare to existing data and then focus on several elements that exhibit redox dependent partitioning behavior.
Busek Company, Inc., has designed and manufactured an electrospray emitter capable of generating 20 mN in a compact package (7x7x1.7 in). The thruster consists of nine porous-surface emitters operating in parallel from a common propellant supply. Each emitter is capable of supporting over 70,000 electrospray emission sites with the plume from each emitter being accelerated through a single aperture, eliminating the need for individual emission site alignment to an extraction grid. The total number of emission sites during operation is expected to approach 700,000. This Phase II project optimized and characterized the thruster fabricated during the Phase I effort. Additional porous emitters also were fabricated for full-scale testing. Propellant is supplied to the thruster via existing feed-system and microvalve technology previously developed by Busek, under the NASA Space Technology 7's Disturbance Reduction System (ST7-DRS) mission and via follow-on electric propulsion programs. This project investigated methods for extending thruster life beyond the previously demonstrated 450 hours. The life-extending capabilities will be demonstrated on a subscale version of the thruster.
The thruster component of the Ascendant Sub-kW Transcelestial Electric Propulsion System successfully completed a propellant throughput demonstration of 72 kg Xe in a long-duration wear test planned to eventually exceed 100 kg. The thruster has been operated for a total of 5450 h over three operating conditions: 3287 h at 300 V – 1000 W, 1745 h at 500 V – 1000 W, and 417 h at 400 V – 600 W. A total of 1.2 MN-s of impulse has been demonstrated to date. Thrust, telemetry, and temperature measurements periodically recorded at four operating conditions spanning 200 – 500 V and 200 – 1000 W revealed constant performance across the full test duration. The erosion of the downstream faces of the thruster was observed to be higher than anticipated after the first 5032 h of thruster operation. This issue was traced to the application of sub-nominal magnetic field strengths throughout the LDWT, caused by an electrical-related ground-support equipment issue, which resulted in a downstream shift of the discharge plasma and enhanced erosion of the thruster’s pole covers. Nevertheless, the thruster performance and operational behaviour remained unaffected. High-fidelity plasma simulations of the erosion of the thruster’s downstream faces, supported by prior short-duration wear testing, suggest a theoretical lifetime capability of >30 kh, corresponding to propellant throughput of >450 kg Xe and a total impulse of >7 MNs, at the 300 V – 1000 W operating condition. The test was voluntarily paused after 68 kg Xe and 72 kg Xe throughput, respectively, to take these erosion measurements at the 500 V and 400 V operating conditions before the test was resumed at a different operating condition.

A method for obtaining cryogenic toughness in an Fe-12Mn-0.2Ti alloy by a controlled cooling technique is presented. The intergranular fracture surface of the quenched alloy, using an AES, revealed no significant difference from that obtained by the bulk transgranular fracture surface, indicating the absence of large-scale grain boundary segregation during the austenitizing treatment. Attention is given to the step cooling method, using a furnace at temperatures of 100 to 120 C, followed by fast cooling to ambient temperature, which in turn produces a high-impact toughness without intergranular brittleness. It is concluded that the sources of brittle intergranular fracture in the alloy are both chemical, operating in martensitic structure, and nonchemical, active during quenching from the austenitizing treatment.

It is found that, since 1800, the mean discrepancy in epoch between maxima in temperature and maxima in the Drought Area Index (DAI) for the western United States with respect to maxima in the lunar modal tide is 0.9 and 0.1 year, respectively. It is suggested, in light of the fact that a cluster of nine stations in western Canada yields the 18.6-year lunar nodal term out of phase with 30 stations in eastern North America, that (1) enhanced drought conditions in the western United States are neither recurrent nor rhythmic on a time scale of 20 years, but rather periodic with a period of 18.6 years, and (2) the Rocky Mountain system is an influence for atmospheric tidal phenomena at epochs of maximum in the lunar nodal tide as well as for maxima in the temperature records of the DAI.
The FeMnAlC alloys may hold potential as Cr-free replacements for high strategic material iron base superalloys, but little is known about their intermediate temperature (650 C to 870 C) mechanical properties. The effects of alloying elements on the mechanical properties of model FeMnAlC alloys were studied. Results showed that modified FeMnAlC alloys had promising short term, intermediate temperature properties but had relatively poor stress rupture lives at 172 MPa and 788 C. Room temperature and 788 C tensile strength of FeMnAlC alloys were better than common cast stainless steels. Changes in room temperature tensile and 788 C tensile strength and ductility, and 788 C stress rupture life were correlated with changes in Ni, Mo, Ti, and Si levels due to alloying effects on interstitial carbon levels and carbide morphology. Fe-25Mn-5Al-2C had a very poor stress rupture life at 172 MPa and 788 C. Addition of carbide-forming elements improved the stress rupture life.
