QED Mesons, the QED Neutron, and the Dark Matter

Schwinger’s boson solution for massless fermions in QED in 1+1D has been applied and generalized to quarks interacting in QED and QCD interactions, leading to stable and confined open-string QED and QCD boson excitations of the quark-QCD-QED system in 1+1D. Just as the open-string QCD excitations in 1+1D can be the idealization of QCD mesons with a flux tube in 3+1D, so the open-string QED excitations in 1+1D may likewise be the idealization of QED mesons with masses in the tens of MeV region, corresponding possibly to the anomalous X17 and E38 particles observed recently. A further search for bound states of quarks interacting in the QED interaction alone leads to the examination on the stability of the QED neutron, consisting of two d quarks and one u quark. Theoretically, the QED neutron has been found to be stable and estimated to have a mass of 44.5 MeV, whereas the analogous QED proton is unstable, leading to a long-lived QED neutron that may be a good candidate for the dark matter.

Scaling Properties of φ -Meson and Light Charged Hadron Production in Small and Large Systems at PHENIX

Recent results on the identified charged-hadron (π ± , K ± , p, p¯) production vat midrapidity region (|η| < 0.35) have been measured by the PHENIX experiment in p + Al, 3 He + Au, Cu + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV and U + U collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 193 GeV. These measurements are presented through the invariant transverse-momentum (p T ) and transverse-mass (m T ) spectra for different collision centralities. The averaged freeze-out temperature value for different systems was found to be 166.1 ± 2.2 MeV, and do not exhibit any dependence on the collision centrality and $\langle$N parti $\rangle$ values. The particle ratios of K/π and p/π have been measured in different centrality ranges of large and small collision systems. The values of K/π ratios measured in all considered collision systems were found to be consistent with those measured in p+p collisions. Furthermore, the identified charged-hadron nuclear-modification factors (R AB ) are also presented. Enhancement of proton R AB values over meson R AB values was observed in central 3 He+Au, Cu+Au, and U+U collisions. The proton R AB values measured in p+Al collision system were found to be consistent with R AB values of Φ, π ± , K ± , and π 0 mesons, suggesting that the size of the system produced in p+Al collisions is too small for recombination to cause a noticeable increase in proton production.

Two- and three-meson scattering amplitudes with physical quark masses from lattice QCD

We study systems of two and three mesons composed of pions and kaons at maximal isospin using four CLS ensembles with 𝑎 ≈ 0.063 fm, including one with approximately physical quark masses. Using the stochastic Laplacian-Heaviside method, we determine the energy spectrum of these systems including many levels in different momentum frames and irreducible representations. Using the relativistic two- and three-body finite-volume formalism, we constrain the two- and three-meson K matrices, including not only the leading 𝑠 wave, but also 𝑝 and 𝑑 waves. By solving the three-body integral equations, we determine, for the first time, the physical-point scattering amplitudes for 3⁢𝜋 + , 3⁢𝐾 + , 𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 + ⁢𝐾 + , and 𝐾 + ⁢𝐾 + ⁢𝜋 + systems. These are determined for total angular momentum 𝐽 𝑃 = 0 − , 1 + , and 2 − . We also obtain accurate results for 2⁢𝜋 + , 𝜋 + ⁢𝐾 + , and 2⁢𝐾 + phase shifts. We compare our results to chiral perturbation theory and to phenomenological fits.

String-based model with Hagedorn temperature of 𝑇 𝐻 ∼ 300 MeV describes the spectrum of mesons and glueballs

We consider the thermodynamics of a color-confined phase of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) and pure gauge theory within a string-inspired corresponding to a physical spatial dimension, 𝑑 = 3. We show that the physical mass spectrum of massive mesons—in both the strange and nonstrange sectors separately—is reasonably well described and extended by the exponential mass spectrum of open strings, 𝜌⁡(𝑚), characterized by a unique Hagedorn temperature 𝑇 𝐻 = $\sqrt3⁢𝜎/2⁢𝜋$, expressed by the string tension 𝜎. This 𝑇 𝐻 is the value appropriate for 𝑑 = 3 spatial dimensions and is of the order of 𝑇 𝐻 ∼ 300 MeV for typical values of the string tension. It is much larger than the values of 𝑇 𝐻 which have been phenomenologically extracted so far to describe the meson spectrum. Glueball states in pure gauge theory, modeled by closed strings, exhibit a similarly large Hagedorn temperature, highlighting a universal feature of the exponential spectrum. We further analyze the thermodynamic properties of the equation of state at finite temperature and demonstrate that, in the confined phase, the string models agree with lattice QCD results. This lends further support to the recent interpretation of the QCD phase diagram that incorporates strings as relevant degrees of freedom.

𝐽/𝜓-meson–nucleon scattering length from threshold photoproduction on light nuclei

The quality of recent Short-Range Correlations/Color-Transparency (SRC/CT) Collaboration 𝐽/𝜓 photoproduction data off a 4 He target from Hall D at Jefferson Laboratory, combined with the feasibility of measuring the reaction close to the free-nucleon energy threshold, opens the door to using incoherent 𝐽/𝜓 photoproduction to explore a variety of interesting physics aspects. An example is the estimation of the 𝐽/𝜓 𝑝 scattering length |𝛼 𝐽/𝜓 𝑝 | on the bound proton, obtained using the vector meson dominance model. The new experiment E12–25–002, conducted by the SRC/CT Collaboration, was recently approved in Hall D with the GlueX spectrometer, which will significantly enhance the number of reconstructed 𝐽/𝜓 mesons. Using a plane-wave theoretical model to generate quasidata, we estimated that the experiment could achieve a result of |𝛼 𝐽/𝜓 𝑝 | = 3.08 ± 0.45 mfm. This value can be compared to an extraction based on the free proton data from the GlueX Collaboration, |𝛼 𝐽/𝜓 𝑝 | = 3.08 ± 0.55 mfm. A comparison between the two would provide an opportunity to evaluate the effects of medium modification in light nuclei.

Effects of nuclear structure and quantum interference on diffractive vector meson production in ultra-peripheral nuclear collisions

Here we study diffractive vector meson production in ultra-peripheral collisions (UPCs) of heavy nuclei, utilizing a theoretical framework based on the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) formalism. We focus on Au + Au, U + U, Ru + Ru, Zr + Zr, and Pb + Pb collisions, examining the transverse momentum dependence of vector meson production cross-sections and co s(2ΔΦ)asymmetries in the decay product distributions to explore the role of nuclear geometry. The angular modulation is due to the linear polarization of the incoming photons and quantum interference effects. We extract nuclear radii and find them to be consistent with experimental data from the STAR collaboration. The amplitudes of the cos(2ΔΦ)modulation in the cross-section and the extracted radii depend on the nuclear geometry. This dependence is dominated by the geometry-dependent variation of the minimum impact parameter required for ultra-peripheral collisions.

Spin alignment of vector mesons by glasma fields

We explain how spin alignment of vector mesons can be induced by background fields, such as electromagnetic fields or soft gluon fields. Our study is based on the quantum kinetic theory of spinning quarks and antiquarks and incorporates the relaxation of the dynamically generated spin polarization. The spin density matrix of vector mesons is obtained by quark coalescence via the Wigner function and kinetic equation. Our approach predicts a local spin correlation that is distinct from the nonlocal expressions previously obtained in phenomenological derivations. We estimate the magnitude of such local correlations in the glasma model of the preequilibrium phase of relativistic heavy ion collisions. It is found that the resulting spin alignment could be greatly enhanced and may be comparable to the experimental measurement in order of magnitude. We further propose new phenomenological scenarios to qualitatively explain the transverse-momentum and centrality dependence of spin alignment in a self-consistent framework.

Longer-lived mediators from charged mesons and photons at neutrino experiments

Since many of the dark-sector particles interact with Standard Model (SM) particles in multiple ways, they can appear in experimental facilities where SM particles appear in abundance. In this study, we explore a particular class of longer-lived mediators that are dominantly produced from photons and charged mesons that arise in proton-beam fixed-target-type neutrino experiments. This class of mediators encompasses light scalars that appear in theories like extended Higgs sectors, muon(electro)philic scalars, etc. We evaluate the sensitivities of these mediators at beam-based neutrino experiments such as the finished ArgoNeuT, ongoing MicroBooNE, SBND, ICARUS, and the upcoming DUNE experiment. We find that muonphilic scalars are more enhanced while produced from three-body decay of charged mesons. The above-mentioned experiments can probe unexplored regions of parameter space that can explain the current discrepancy in the anomalous magnetic moment of muons. We further find that Compton-like scattering of photons is the largest source of electrophilic scalars. By utilizing this, the DUNE Near Detector can explore new regions in the sensitivity space of electrophilic scalars. We also show that Bethe-Heitler scattering processes can be used to probe flavor-specific lepton final states even for the mediator masses below twice the lepton mass. Observation of strangeness enhancement with charmed mesons in high-multiplicity p Pb collisions at s NN = 8.16 TeV

The production of prompt D s + and D + mesons is measured by the LHCb experiment in proton-lead ( p Pb ) collisions in both the forward ( 1.5 < y * < 4.0 ) and backward ( − 5.0 < y * < − 2.5 ) rapidity regions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of s NN = 8.16 TeV . The nuclear modification factors of both D s + and D + mesons are determined as a function of transverse momentum, p T , and rapidity. In addition, the D s + to D + cross section ratio is measured as a function of the primary charged particle multiplicity in the event. An enhanced D s + to D + production in high-multiplicity events is observed for the whole measured p T range, in particular at low p T and backward rapidity, where the significance exceeds six standard deviations. This constitutes the first observation of strangeness enhancement in charm quark hadronization in high-multiplicity p Pb collisions. The results are also qualitatively consistent with the presence of quark coalescence as an additional charm quark hadronization mechanism in high-multiplicity proton-lead collisions. © 2024 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2024 CERN

High-Energy Collision of Quarks and Mesons in the Schwinger Model: From Tensor Networks to Circuit QED

With the aim of studying nonperturbative out-of-equilibrium dynamics of high-energy particle collisions on quantum simulators, we investigate the scattering dynamics of lattice quantum electrodynamics in 1 + 1 dimensions. Working in the bosonized formulation of the model and in the thermodynamic limit, we use uniform-matrix-product-state tensor networks to construct multiparticle wave-packet states, evolve them in time, and detect outgoing particles post collision. This facilitates the numerical simulation of scattering experiments in both confined and deconfined regimes of the model at different energies, giving rise to rich phenomenology, including inelastic production of quark and meson states, meson disintegration, and dynamical string formation and breaking. We obtain elastic and inelastic scattering cross sections, together with time-resolved momentum and position distributions of the outgoing particles. Furthermore, we propose an analog circuit-QED implementation of the scattering process that is native to the platform, requires minimal ingredients and approximations, and enables practical schemes for particle wave-packet preparation and evolution. Furthermore, this study highlights the role of classical and quantum simulation in enhancing our understanding of scattering processes in quantum field theories in real time.

Polarization of the 𝜙 meson in the hadronic phase with nucleon scatterings and a viscous hydrodynamic background

We extend our previous work on the spin alignment of the ϕ vector meson in the hadronic phase of the quark gluon plasma, by including effects of nucleon scatterings. The emission rates are calculated in a realistic hydrodynamic background simulated with the code FLUIDuM , for different beam energies. We find that all the effects taken into account cannot explain the out-of-plane spin alignment of the ϕ meson observed experimentally.

Investigating charm production and fragmentation via azimuthal correlations of prompt D mesons with charged particles in pp collisions at $\mathbf {\sqrt{ s} = 13}$ TeV

Angular correlations of heavy-flavour and charged particles in high-energy proton–proton collisions are sensitive to the production mechanisms of heavy quarks and to their fragmentation as well as hadronisation processes. The measurement of the azimuthal-correlation function of prompt D mesons with charged particles in proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of \(\sqrt{s} = 13\) TeV with the ALICE detector is reported, considering \(\mathrm D^{0} \) , \(\mathrm D^{+} \) , and \(\mathrm D^{*+} \) mesons in the transverse-momentum interval \(3< p_{\mathrm{T}} < 36\) GeV/ \(c\) at midrapidity ( \(|y| < 0.5\) ), and charged particles with \(p_{\mathrm{T}} > 0.3\) GeV/ \(c\) and pseudorapidity \(|\eta | < 0.8\) . This measurement has an improved precision and provides an extended transverse-momentum coverage compared to previous ALICE measurements at lower energies. The study is also performed as a function of the charged-particle multiplicity, showing no modifications of the correlation function with multiplicity within uncertainties. The properties and the transverse-momentum evolution of the near- and away-side correlation peaks are studied and compared with predictions from various Monte Carlo event generators. Among those considered, PYTHIA8 and POWHEG+PYTHIA8 provide the best description of the measured observables. The obtained results can provide guidance on tuning the generators.

$K^{*}(892)^0$ meson production in inelastic p+p interactions at 40 and 80 $\text{ GeV }\!/\!c$ beam momenta measured by NA61/SHINE at the CERN SPS

Measurements of $K^{*}(892)^0$ resonance production via its $K^{+}\pi ^{-}$ decay mode in inelastic p+p collisions at beam momenta 40 and 80 $\text{ GeV }\!/\!c$ ($\sqrt{s_{NN}}=8.8$ and 12.3 $\text{ GeV }$) are presented. The data were recorded by the NA61/SHINE hadron spectrometer at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. The template method was used to extract the $K^{*}(892)^0$ signal. Transverse momentum and rapidity spectra were obtained. The mean multiplicities of $K^{*}(892)^0$ mesons were found to be $(35.1 \pm 1.3 \mathrm {(stat)} \pm 3.6 \mathrm {(sys))} \cdot 10^{-3}$ at 40 $\text{ GeV }\!/\!c$ and $(58.3 \pm 1.9 \mathrm {(stat)} \pm 4.9 \mathrm {(sys))} \cdot 10^{-3}$ at 80 $\text{ GeV }\!/\!c$. The NA61/SHINE results are compared with the Epos1.99 and Hadron Resonance Gas models as well as with world data. The transverse mass spectra of $K^{*}(892)^0$ mesons and other particles previously reported by NA61/SHINE were fitted within the Blast-Wave model. The transverse flow velocities are close to 0.1–0.2 of the speed of light and are significantly smaller than the ones determined in heavy nucleus-nucleus interactions at the same beam momenta.

Transverse Single-Spin Asymmetries of Midrapidity Direct Photons and Neutral Mesons at PHENIX

Results are presented for the transverse single-spin asymmetries of direct photons, neutral pions, and eta mesons for |\eta|<0.35 | η | < 0.35 from p^\uparrow + p p ↑ + p collisions with \sqrt{s} = 200 s = 200 GeV at PHENIX. As hadrons, \pi^0 π 0 and \eta η mesons are sensitive to both initial- and final-state effects and at midrapidity probe the dynamics of gluons along with a mix of quark flavors. Because direct photon production does not include hadronization, the direct photon TSSA is only sensitive to initial-state effects and at midrapidity provides a clean probe of the gluon dynamics in transversely polarized protons. All three of these results will help constrain the collinear twist-3 trigluon correlation function as well as the gluon Sivers function, improving our knowledge of spin-dependent gluon dynamics in QCD.

Status of the muon neutrino charged-current zero mesons cross section measurement in the NOvA near detector

NOvA is a long-baseline accelerator neutrino experiment at Fermilab whose physics goals include precision neutrino oscillation as well as cross-section measurements. We present the status of the measurement of muon neutrino charged-current cross section with zero mesons in the final state at the NOvA near detector. This measurement will be made with respect to the kinematics of the final state particles. Our chosen interaction channel is especially sensitive to quasielastic and meson exchange current interactions and will provide a handle for constraining the cross section systematic uncertainties in oscillation analyses in current and future experiments. For particle identification, we use a convolutional neural network (CNN) trained on individual particles simulated in the NOvA near detector that allows us to select the desired signal while reducing the potential bias from neutrino interaction modeling. Charged pion background constraining is further improved via Michel electron tagging.

Toward $\nu_{\mu}$CC $\eta$ Meson Cross Sections on Argon in SBND

The modeling of resonant neutrino interactions on argon is critical for achieving precision neutrino oscillation measurements and searching for physics beyond the Standard Model with both DUNE and the Short-Baseline Neutrino Program. Higher mass resonances beyond the $\Delta$(1232) baryon are particularly poorly constrained experimentally, and yet contribute a significant rate in multi-GeV interactions. The measurement of $\eta$(548) meson production from the decay of these resonances provides a unique probe, as well as the opportunity to measure observables sensitive to final state interactions with the nucleus. This poster will present progress towards the measurement of meson production with the Short-Baseline Near Detector (SBND) at Fermilab, leveraging the clean $\eta \rightarrow \gamma \gamma$ decay channel. The large statistics of the SBND dataset will provide high-precision measurements of this channel capable of constraining uncertainties in the modeling of higher order resonant interactions. This analysis further provides important handles on electromagnetic shower reconstruction performance through evaluation of the 548 MeV $\eta$ invariant mass peak.

$B$-meson semileptonic decays with highly improved staggered quarks

We present an update of the Fermilab Lattice and MILC Collaborations project to compute the form factors for semileptonic $B_{(s)}$-meson decays. Our calculation uses the highly improved staggered quark (HISQ) action for sea and valence quarks, and ensembles with up, down, strange, and charm quarks in the sea. Using a highly improved action with the MILC Collaboration's gauge ensembles with lattice spacings down to $a\approx0.03$ fm, allows the heavy valence quarks to be treated with the same discretization as the light and strange quarks. This unified treatment of the valence quarks allows for absolutely normalized vector currents, bypassing the need for perturbative matching, which has been a source of uncertainty in previous calculations of $B$-meson decay form factors by our collaboration. All preliminary form-factor results are blinded.
