Optical Linear Polarization toward the Open Star Cluster Casado Alessi 1

We present B-, V-, R-, and I-band linear polarimetric observations of 73 stars in the direction of open star cluster Casado Alessi 1 (hereafter Alessi 1). We aim to use polarimetry as a tool to investigate the properties and distribution of dust grains toward the direction of the cluster. The polarimetric observations were carried out using the ARIES IMaging POLarimeter mounted at the 104 cm telescope of ARIES, Nainital (India). Using the Gaia photometric data the age and distance of the cluster are estimated to be 0.8 ± 0.1 Gyr and 673 ± 98 pc, respectively. A total of 66 stars with a 26′ radius from the cluster are identified as members of the cluster using the astrometric approach. Out of these 66 members, 15 stars were observed polarimetrically and found to have the same value of polarization. The majority of the stars in the region follow the general law of polarization for the interstellar medium, indicating that polarization toward the cluster Alessi 1 is dominated by foreground dust grains. The average values of the maximum polarization (P {sub max}) and the wavelength corresponding to the maximum polarization (λ {sub max}) toward the cluster are found to be 0.83 ± 0.03% and 0.59 ± 0.04 μm, respectively. Also, dust grains toward the cluster appear to be aligned, possibly due to the galactic magnetic field.

Noncoplanar ferrimagnetism and local crystalline-electric-field anisotropy in the quasicrystal approximant Au 70 Si 17 Tb 13

Neutron scattering experiments have been performed to elucidate magnetic properties of the quasicrystal approximant Au 70 Si 17 Tb 13 , consisting of icosahedral spin clusters in a body-centered-cubic lattice. Bulk magnetic measurements performed on the single crystalline sample unambiguously confirm long-range ordering at T C = 11.6 ± 1 K. In contrast to the simple ferromagnetic response in the bulk measurements, single crystal neutron diffraction confirms a formation of intriguing non-collinear and non-coplanar magnetic order. The magnetic moment direction was found to be nearly tangential to the icosahedral cluster surface in the local mirror plane, which is quite similar to that recently found in the antiferromagnetic quasicrystal approximant Au 72 Al 14 Tb 14 . Inelastic neutron scattering on the powdered sample exhibits a very broad peak centered at hω ≃ 4 meV. The observed inelastic spectrum was explained by the crystalline-electric-field model taking account of the chemical disorder at the fractional Au/Si sites. The resulting averaged anisotropy axis for the crystalline-electric-field ground state is consistent with the ordered moment direction determined in the magnetic structure analysis, confirming that the non-coplanar magnetic order is stabilized by the local uniaxial anisotropy.

Constraints on the Intergalactic Magnetic Field Using Fermi-LAT and H.E.S.S. Blazar Observations

Magnetic fields in galaxies and galaxy clusters are believed to be the result of the amplification of intergalactic seed fields during the formation of large-scale structures in the universe. However, the origin, strength, and morphology of this intergalactic magnetic field (IGMF) remain unknown. Lower limits on (or indirect detection of) the IGMF can be obtained from observations of high-energy gamma rays from distant blazars. Gamma rays interact with the extragalactic background light to produce electron-positron pairs, which can subsequently initiate electromagnetic cascades. The gamma-ray signature of the cascade depends on the IGMF since it deflects the pairs. Here we report on a new search for this cascade emission using a combined data set from the Fermi Large Area Telescope and the High Energy Stereoscopic System. Using state-of-the-art Monte Carlo predictions for the cascade signal, our results place a lower limit on the IGMF of B > 7.1 × 10 -16 G for a coherence length of 1 Mpc even when blazar duty cycles as short as 10 yr are assumed. This improves on previous lower limits by a factor of 2. For longer duty cycles of 10 4 (10 7 ) yr, IGMF strengths below 1.8 × 10 -14 G (3.9 × 10 -14 G) are excluded, which rules out specific models for IGMF generation in the early universe.

Significance of the structural configuration of B2 disorder in Co and Ti based Heusler alloys

We investigate here structural (at local and global levels) and transport properties for 𝑋 2 ⁢MnAl (𝑋= Co and Ti). Additionally, the magnetic properties were also studied for Ti 2 ⁢MnAl. Our x-ray diffraction results show that both the compounds stabilize in B2 disordered phase with cubic structure of 𝑃⁢𝑚⁢$\overline{3}$⁢𝑚 space group. Further, the structural configuration of the above disordered phase for both the compounds was identified using combined studies of x-ray absorption spectroscopy and multiple scattering calculations at the transition metal 𝐾 edges. Upon such identification, in the case of Co 2 ⁢Mn 1−𝑦⁢ Cr 𝑦 ⁢Al (𝑦= 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2) with change in 𝑦, we are able to establish a better connection quantitatively between the inverse of Mn-Co bonds and peak in the temperature-dependent resistivity. This highlights the crucial importance of a detailed understanding of the nature of B2 disorder. In the case of 𝑦=0, in the temperature range of study, the resistivity is driven by the functional form associated with (a) three-dimensional enhanced electron-electron Coulomb interaction scattering mechanism and (b) an unconventional one-magnon process. For Ti 2 ⁢MnAl, the transport shows metallic glasslike behavior at high temperature, while at low temperature it follows both the Cote-Meisel's model and quantum correction model. In this compound, the magnetic studies suggest the formation of superparamagnetic clusters in the paramagnetic matrix at low temperatures. Our density functional theory results are in line with the transport and magnetic properties. In literature, the spin polarization percentage (𝑃) for 𝑋= Co in B2 disordered phase is 76%. However, the present results emphasize the fact that in B2 disordered phase, the value of 𝑃 can range from 90% to 71% depending on the structural configuration introduced by swapping of the atomic positions of Mn and Al. For the compound under study, the value of percentage spin polarization obtained ranges between 82% to 85%. In addition, we also identify the origin of the difference in the shape of the Mn 3⁢𝑑 density of states for both the alloys. In conclusion, our results for 𝑋= Co alloy highlights the importance of identifying the specific structural configuration associated with a particular disorder category especially in the estimation of 𝑇 𝑐 and 𝑃 and for 𝑋= Ti, the physical properties can be tuned by varying the position of 𝐸 𝐹 and thereby its utilization in device applications.

Mechanisms of Complete Dissociation of CO 2 on Iron Clusters

Dissociation of CO 2 on iron clusters was studied by using semilocal density functional theory and basis sets of triple-zeta quality. Fe 2 , Fe 4 , and Fe 16 clusters were selected as the representative host clusters. When searching for isomers of Fe n CO 2 , n=2, 4 and 16 corresponding to carbon dioxide attachment to the host clusters, its reduction to O and CO, and to the complete dissociation, it was found that the total spin magnetic moments of the lowest energy states of the isomers are often quenched with respect to those of initial reagents Fe n +CO 2 . Dissociation pathways of the Fe 2 +CO 2 , Fe 4 +CO 2 , and Fe 16 +CO 2 reactions contain several transition states separated by the local minima states; therefore, a natural question is where do the spin flips occur? Since lifetimes of magnetically excited states were shown to be of the order of 100 fs, the search for the CO 2 dissociation pathways was performed under the assumption that magnetic deexcitation may occur at the intermediate local minima. Two dissociation pathways were obtained for each Fe n +CO 2 reaction using the gradient-based methods. It was found that the Fe 2 +CO 2 reaction is endothermic with respect to both reduction and complete dissociation of CO 2 , whereas the Fe 4 +CO 2 and Fe 16 +CO 2 reactions are exothermic to both reduction and complete dissociation of carbon dioxide. Finally, the CO 2 reduction was found to be more favorable than its complete dissociation in the Fe 4 case.

Magnetic field induced phase transitions of the triangular spin model

In this work, motivated by a recent inelastic neutron scattering experiment on YbMgGaO 4 , I study the homogeneous spin model on the triangular lattice using the cluster mean-field theory and exact diagonalization. Phase diagrams with and without magnetic field are computed. The results show that the magnetic field can induce the phase transition from the spin liquid state (or the stripe state) to the 120 ° antiferromagnetic state. These phase transitions are suppressed by the next-nearest-neighbor exchange interaction J 2 / J 1 and vanish as J 2 / J 1 > 0.11 . I analyze a parameter space at J 2 / J 1 = 0.1 , where a field induced phase transition can occur, and find that the deviation of the theoretical spin excitation energy from the experimental data is only about 0.054. These results imply that an effective homogeneous spin model still applies to YbMgGaO 4 .

Ferromagnetic Cr 4 PtGa 17 : A Half-Heusler-Type Compound with a Breathing Pyrochlore Lattice

Here, we describe the crystal structure and elementary magnetic properties of a previously unreported ternary intermetallic compound, Cr 4 PtGa 17 , which crystallizes in a rhombohedral unit cell in the noncentrosymmetric space group R3m. The crystal structure is closely related to those of XYZ half-Heusler compounds, where X, Y, and Z are reported to be single elements only, occupying three different face-centered-cubic sublattices. The new material, Cr 4 PtGa 17 , can be most straightforwardly illustrated by writing the formula as (PtGa 2 )(Cr 4 Ga 14 )Ga (X = PtGa 2 , Y = Cr 4 Ga 14 , Z = Ga); that is, the X and Y sites are occupied by clusters instead of single elements. The magnetic Cr occupies a breathing pyrochlore lattice. Ferromagnetic ordering is found below T C ~ 61 K, by both neutron diffraction and magnetometer studies, with a small, saturated moment of ~0.25 μ B /Cr observed at 2 K, making Cr 4 PtGa 17 the first ferromagnetically ordered material with a breathing pyrochlore lattice. A magnetoresistance of ~140% was observed at 2 K. DFT calculations suggest that the material has a nearly half-metallic electronic structure. The new material, Cr 4 PtGa 17 , the first realization of both a half-Heusler-type structure and a breathing pyrochlore lattice, might pave a new way to achieve novel types of half-Heusler compounds.

Observation of backscattering induced by magnetism in a topological edge state

Significance One of the predicted characteristics of helical topological boundary modes is the absence of backscattering when time-reversal symmetry (TRS) is preserved. While previous experiments have provided evidence for this topological protection, inducing backscattering by breaking TRS has yet to be demonstrated. We test this fundamental property by investigating quasiparticle scattering in the one-dimensional topological edge state of bismuth bilayers, coupled to ferromagnetic iron clusters, using a scanning tunneling microscope. Our experimental observations demonstrate that backscattering is induced by magnetism of iron clusters in these topological edge modes.

The Helicity Sign of Flux Transfer Event Flux Ropes and Its Relationship to the Guide Field and Hall Physics in Magnetic Reconnection at the Magnetopause

Flux Transfer Events (FTEs) are transient magnetic flux ropes typically found at the Earth's magnetopause on the dayside. While it is known that FTEs are generated by magnetic reconnection, it remains unclear how the details of magnetic reconnection controls their properties. A recent study showed that the helicity sign of FTEs positively correlates with the east-west (B y ) component of the Interplanetary Magnetic Field (IMF). With data from the Cluster and Magnetospheric Multiscale missions, we performed a statistical study of 166 quasi force-free FTEs. We focus on their helicity sign and possible association with upstream solar wind conditions and local magnetic reconnection properties. Using both in situ data and magnetic shear modeling, we find that FTEs whose helicity sign corresponds to the IMF B y are associated with moderate magnetic shears while those that do not correspond to the IMF B y are associated with higher magnetic shears. While uncertainty in IMF propagation to the magnetopause may lead to randomness in the determination of the flux rope core field and helicity, we rather propose that for small IMF B y , which corresponds to high shear and low guide field, the Hall pattern of magnetic reconnection determines the FTE core field and helicity sign. In that context we explain how the temporal sequence of multiple X-line formation and the reconnection rate are important in determining the flux rope helicity sign. This work highlights a fundamental connection between kinetic processes at work in magnetic reconnection and the macroscale structure of FTEs.

Size- and temperature-dependent magnetization of iron nanoclusters

In this paper, the magnetic behavior of bcc iron nanoclusters, with diameters between 2 and 8 nm, is investigated by means of spin dynamics simulations coupled to molecular dynamics, using a distance-dependent exchange interaction. Finite-size effects in the total magnetization as well as the influence of the free surface and the surface/core proportion of the nanoclusters are analyzed in detail for a wide temperature range, going beyond the cluster and bulk Curie temperatures. Comparison is made with experimental data and with theoretical models based on the mean-field Ising model adapted to small clusters, and taking into account the influence of low coordinated spins at free surfaces. Our results for the temperature dependence of the average magnetization per atom M (T), including the thermalization of the transnational lattice degrees of freedom, are in very good agreement with available experimental measurements on small Fe nanoclusters. In contrast, significant discrepancies with experiment are observed if the translational degrees of freedom are artificially frozen. The finite-size effects on M (T) are found to be particularly important near the cluster Curie temperature. Simulated magnetization above the Curie temperature scales with cluster size as predicted by models assuming short-range magnetic ordering. Analytical approximations to the magnetization as a function of temperature and size are proposed.

Role of Fe Doping on Local Structure and Electrical and Magnetic Properties of PbTiO 3

In this work, the local structure and multiferroic properties of iron-doped lead titanate (PbTi 1-x Fe x O 3-δ ) samples was investigated over the entire composition range (x = 0-1). Inherent polarization in PbTiO 3 decreases due to Fe 3+ incorporation up to the solubility limit (x similar to 0.3), although homogeneous doping persists only up to x = 0.1. Ti prefers highly distorted oxygen octahedra for any x value, while Fe prefers more symmetric O-deficient polyhedra (Fe-O n ). The charge compensating oxygen vacancies induce local tilting of the Fe-O n polyhedra beyond a critical x value (x ≥ 0.2), promoting magnetic interaction between two adjacent Fe atoms. The strain induced by local heterogeneity could act as a coupling force between magnetic and ferroelectric properties. Fe-rich clusters evolve into ferromagnetic PbFe 12 O 19 with increased Fe doping. PbTi 1-x Fe x O 3-δ (x ≥ 0.3) samples therefore have separate origins for the ferroelectric (PbTi 1-x Fe x O 3-δ ) and magnetic (PbFe 12 O 19 ) phases.

Synthesis of Co‐Doped MoS 2 Monolayers with Enhanced Valley Splitting

Abstract Internal magnetic moments induced by magnetic dopants in MoS 2 monolayers are shown to serve as a new means to engineer valley Zeeman splitting (VZS). Specifically, successful synthesis of monolayer MoS 2 doped with the magnetic element Co is reported, and the magnitude of the valley splitting is engineered by manipulating the dopant concentration. Valley splittings of 3.9, 5.2, and 6.15 meV at 7 T in Co‐doped MoS 2 with Co concentrations of 0.8%, 1.7%, and 2.5%, respectively, are achieved as revealed by polarization‐resolved photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. Atomic‐resolution electron microscopy studies clearly identify the magnetic sites of Co substitution in the MoS 2 lattice, forming two distinct types of configurations, namely isolated single dopants and tridopant clusters. Density functional theory (DFT) and model calculations reveal that the observed enhanced VZS arises from an internal magnetic field induced by the tridopant clusters, which couples to the spin, atomic orbital, and valley magnetic moment of carriers from the conduction and valence bands. The present study demonstrates a new method to control the valley pseudospin via magnetic dopants in layered semiconducting materials, paving the way toward magneto‐optical and spintronic devices.

A Super-Oxidized Radical Cationic Icosahedral Boron Cluster

While the icosahedral closo-[B 12 H 12 ] 2– cluster does not display reversible electrochemical behavior, perfunctionalization of this species via substitution of all 12 B–H vertices with alkoxy or benzyloxy (OR) substituents engenders reversible redox chemistry, providing access to clusters in the dianionic, monoanionic, and neutral forms. In this work, we evaluated the electrochemical behavior of the electron-rich B 12 (O-3-methylbutyl) 12 (1) cluster and discovered that a new reversible redox event that gives rise to a fourth electronic state is accessible through one-electron oxidation of the neutral species. Chemical oxidation of 1 with [N(2,4-Br 2 C 6 H 3 ) 3 ] •+ afforded the isolable [1] •+ cluster, which is the first example of an open-shell cationic B 12 cluster in which the unpaired electron is proposed to be delocalized throughout the boron cluster core. The oxidation of 1 is also chemically reversible, where treatment of [1] •+ with ferrocene resulted in its reduction back to 1. The identity of [1] •+ is supported by EPR, UV–vis, multinuclear NMR ( 1 H, 11 B), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic characterization.

Assessing the effect of regularization on the molecular properties predicted by SCAN and self-interaction corrected SCAN meta-GGA

Recent regularization of the SCAN meta-GGA functional (rSCAN) has simplified the numerical complexities of the SCAN functional, alleviating SCAN's stringent demand on the numerical integration grids to some extent. The regularization of rSCAN, however, results in the breaking of some constraints such as the uniform electron gas limit, the slowly varying density limit, and coordinate scaling of the iso-orbital indicator. Here, we assess the effects of regularization on the electronic, structural, vibrational, and magnetic properties of molecules by comparing the SCAN and rSCAN predictions. The properties studied include atomic energies, atomization energies, ionization potentials, electron affinities, barrier heights, infrared intensities, dissociation and reaction energies, spin moments of molecular magnets, and isomer ordering of water clusters. Our results show that rSCAN requires less dense numerical grids and gives very similar results to those of SCAN for all properties examined with the exception of atomization energies, which are worsened in rSCAN. We also examine the performance of self-interaction-corrected (SIC) rSCAN with respect to SIC-SCAN using the Perdew–Zunger (PZ) SIC method. The PZSIC method uses orbital densities to compute one-electron self-interaction errors and places an even more stringent demand on numerical grids. Our results show that SIC-rSCAN gives marginally better performance than SIC-SCAN for almost all properties studied in this work with numerical grids that are on average half or less as dense as that needed for SIC-SCAN.

Magnon heat transport in a two-dimensional Mott insulator

Whether or not anomalies in the thermal conductivity in insulating cuprates can be attributed to antiferromagnetic order and magnons in a 2D Mott insulator remains an intriguing open question. To shed light on this issue, we investigate the thermal conductivity $\kappa$ and its relationship with the specific heat $c_v$ in the half-filled 2D single-band Hubbard model, using the numerically exact determinant quantum Monte Carlo algorithm and maximum entropy analytic continuation. At low temperatures where the charge degrees of freedom are gapped-out and $c_v$ exhibits a clear magnon peak, we observe that thermal conductivity $\kappa$ also tends to form a peak at similar temperatures. Reducing temperature further produces a sharp upturn in $\kappa$, associated with an increasing mean-free path. Here we identify this as the high-temperature side of the anomalous peak in insulating cuprates, where the mean-free path eventually is cut-off by other scattering effects, including phonons, disorder, and physical size. Different scattering effects in our model are identified and analyzed in the thermal diffusivity.

Extraordinarily strong magneto-responsiveness in phase-separated LaFe 2 Si

Materials responding vigorously to minor variations of external stimuli with negligible hysteresis could revolutionize many of the energy technologies, including refrigeration, actuation, and sensing. Here, we report a combined experimental and theoretical study of a two-phase composite, naturally formed at the LaFe 2 Si stoichiometry, which exhibits a nearly anhysteretic, two-step first-order ferromagnetic-to-paramagnetic phase transformation with enhanced sensitivity to an external magnetic field. Other unusual properties include a large plateau-like positive magnetoresistance, magnetic-field-induced temperature and entropy changes occurring over a wide temperature range, and a Griffiths-like phase associated with short-range ferromagnetic clustering in the paramagnetic state. The heat capacity, magnetization, Mössbauer spectroscopy, and electrical resistivity, all exhibit characteristic, unusually sharp, first-order discontinuities even in magnetic fields as high as 100 kOe. We expect that similar phenomena could be designed in other mixed-phase systems, leading to novel functionalities, such as giant caloric effects in many yet undiscovered or/and underperforming intermetallic compounds.
