ECAR-7932 Rev 0 Large Eddy Simulation of MARVEL Reactor Core Subchannel to Evaluate Model Uncertainty of Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes Equation Based Computational Fluid Dynamics Analysis

In the previous work (ECAR-7210), the peak cladding temperature of the MARVEL microreactor has been evaluated by steady-state Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) based computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. Although numerical uncertainties of RANS-based CFD simulations has been assessed in ECAR-7210, the model uncertainty of RANS turbulence models must be investigated to resolve the issues related to inaccurate prediction of turbulent heat flux and flow pulsation in a tight lattice rod bundle using the steady-state RANS simulations. Consequently, this ECAR conducted a high-fidelity CFD analysis utilizing Large Eddy Simulation (LES) to generate reference data and investigated the model uncertainty of RANS-based CFD simulations.

ECAR-8446 Rev 0 MARVEL BPVC Section III Division 5 HBB Fatigue Acceptance Tests

The objective of this analysis is to evaluate the fatigue and creep behavior of 316 SS materials used in the Primary Coolant System (PCS) and Guard Vessel System (GVS) for the first two years of MARVEL reactor operation. The analysis follows the requirements set forth in ASME BPVC Section III, Division 5, HBB-2800, which mandates a fatigue test if operational conditions exceed allowable thresholds. By determining whether the materials meet the HBB-T-1324(a) and HBB-T-1324(b) criteria, this evaluation establishes whether a fatigue test is necessary, as well as the maximum allowable operational hours and temperatures before fatigue testing would be required. The deliverables of this analysis include calculations validating compliance with fatigue acceptance criteria, determination of maximum operational limits for the two-year period, and identification of conditions under which a fatigue test would be necessary. This ensures that the PCS and GVS can operate safely without premature material degradation and align with the design life requirements outlined in SPC-70731. Additionally, this evaluation provides conservative estimates for Service Level B occurrences and their impact on allowable Service Level A hours and temperatures, offering guidance for future operational assessments and potential life extensions beyond the initial two-year period.

Fabrication of a Liner Assembly for the MARVEL Microreactor

A liner assembly for an intermediate heat exchanger within the MARVEL microreactor at Idaho National Laboratory has been fabricated using laser-based additive manufacturing. The liner design includes challenging features such as long thin walls, overhangs, and tight geometric tolerances. Two versions of the liner assembly, one full length and the other shortened, were printed from several materials (316L SS, Inconel 625, and Inconel 718) using four powder-based laser printers (AddUp BeAM Modulo 400 DED, EOS 290M LPBF, GE Concept M2, and GE Concept Xline 2000R LPBF) located at the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility of Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Dimensional accuracy, print time, and powder utilization have been evaluated to help assess the feasibility of these AM approaches to liner fabrication. Based on this assessment, a potentially cost-effective pathway for fabrication has been proposed.

MARVEL Lessons Learned – 2026 Edition Fabrication, Fuel Procurement, Quality Assurance, and Safety Basis

The Microreactor Applications Research Validation and Evaluation (MARVEL) project is intended to be among the first U.S. advanced reactor demonstrations in four decades. By virtue of being sponsored directly by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), the reactor is expected to benefit the broader nuclear community by exercising design processes, safety reviews, and supply chains. This project is committed to publicly documenting key lessons learned along the way toward demonstration. Building on a 2025 report that focused on lessons learned from guard vessel fabrication and Primary Coolant Apparatus Test (PCAT) testing (Abou-Jaoude et al. 2025), this 2026 edition captures findings spanning structural fabrication, quality assurance (QA), reactivity control system (RCS) assembly, fuel fabrication and shipment, safety basis development, balance-of-plant design, and overall reactor design.
