Search for Higgs boson decays into a pair of pseudoscalar particles in the $bbμμ$ final state with the ATLAS detector in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV

This paper presents a search for decays of the Higgs boson with a mass of 125 GeV into a pair of new pseudoscalar particles, $H→aa$, where one a-boson decays into a b-quark pair and the other into a muon pair. The search uses 139 fb -1 of proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV recorded between 2015 and 2018 by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. A narrow dimuon resonance is searched for in the invariant mass spectrum between 16 GeV and 62 GeV. The largest excess of events above the Standard Model backgrounds is observed at a dimuon invariant mass of 52 GeV and corresponds to a local (global) significance of 3.3σ (1.7σ). Upper limits at 95% confidence level are placed on the branching ratio of the Higgs boson to the $bbμμ$ final state, $B(H→aa→bbμμ)$, and are in the range 0.2-4.0×10 -4 , depending on the signal mass hypothesis.

Photoproduction of K0K0-bar with the GlueX Experiment

In this dissertation, we study photoproduction of K0 ?K 0 through the KSKLp and KSKSp ?nal states with the GlueX Phase-I (GlueX-I) data set. We measure the spin-density matrix elements (SDMEs) and di?erential cross section of ?(1020) ! KSKL to better understand photoproduction of light vector mesons. A mass independent Partial Wave Analysis (PWA) of the KSKL and KSKS meson spectrum below 2 GeV is also undertaken to study the meson spectrum with JPC = even++ and odd??. The ?(1020) di?erential cross section is measured at E = 8:2 ? 8:8 GeV and ?t = 0:15 ? 1:00 GeV2. The di?erential cross section is well described by an exponential decay with slope 4:44?0:01 GeV?2 and the integrated cross section is determined to be 295:7?0:4 nb, only statistical uncertainties are quoted. Both measurements are consistent and far more precise than the previous measurement by Ballam et al. [1]. The ?(1020) SDMEs were measured in nine bins of ?t in the same range. At low ?t, we ?nd the data were consistent with s-channel helicity conservation, SCHC, i. e. the only non-zero SDMEs were ?1 1?1 = ?Im(?2 1?1) = 1=2. At higher ?t, the SDMEs deviate from SCHC and the measurements indicate this is due to natural parity exchange since we observe that the SDMEs are consistent with zero unnatural exchange. We also ?find that the contribution from helicity double-flip amplitudes is consistent with zero. The measured SDMEs are in poor agreement with theoretical predictions put forward by JPAC [35]. These measurements will serve as input to re?ne models of production processes, which will be essential for the interpretation of possible signals of exotic mesons in GlueX. Analysis of the spectrum above the ?(1020) indicates the presence of at least three particles at ? 1:50, ? 1:75, and 2:20 GeV. We employ simple parametrizations of the resonance line shape based on relativistic Breit-Wigner functions considering cases with and without interference. The resonance at ? 1:50 GeV is not identifi?ed as any specifi?c resonance, but could be due to interference between the ?(1450) and !(1420). Our models favor the resonance at ~1:75 GeV as the X(1750) rather than the ?(1680). We ?find that introducing a third Breit-Winger into the models improves the ?t quality with the ?2/ndf going from 1.75 to 1.59 and 1.41 to 1.18 for models without and with interference respectively. A PWA of the KSKL spectrum indicates that the spectrum is consistent with exclusively spin-1 contribution up to ? 1:6 GeV. Above ? 1:6 GeV we ?find evidence for a small spin-3 contribution. We also ?nd that the spectrum predominantly positive reflectivity up to ? 1:6 GeV, after which the spectrum becomes a nearly equal mix of both. The KSKS system shows a rich spectrum with multiple resonance structures but is more statistically limited than the KSKL system. Modelling the line shape we ?find evidence at greater than 10? level in favor of a resonance at ? 1:75 GeV. The model parameters suggest this resonance is the f0(1710). The PWA of the KSKS system was inconclusive. However, using a small set of amplitudes suggests that the spin-2 contribution to the spectrum is primarily in the range 1:2?1:6 GeV, where f2(1270), a2(1320) and f02 (1525) are expected.

Photoproduction of K 0 S Pairs at GlueX

We present an study of the ¿¿ ¿ ¿0 ¿¿0 ¿¿ channel measured by the GlueX experiment. This channel selects for resonances with ¿¿¿ = even++ quantum numbers (the ¿0, ¿2, ¿0, and ¿2 light, flavorless mesons) and potentially contains contributions from the lightest scalar glueball (¿0). Data from the 2017, 2018, and 2020 run periods are used to perform a mass independent (binned) partial-wave analysis to distinguish spin states. Due to the polarized photon beam at GlueX, we are also able to extract reflectivity amplitudes for the first time in this channel. Additionally, we perform mass-dependent partial-wave analyses using a fixed ¿-matrixparameterization to attempt a determination of the relative contribution of each res onance, and we present a guided initialization method which facilitates navigation through a parameter space with many local minima. These mass-dependent fits are a proof-of-concept in using fixed ¿-matrix models constrained by other experiments to measure photoproduc tion amplitudes for overlapping states which may only differ by isospin, a property which cannot be distinguished in this channel.

Mixing effects on spectroscopy and partonic observables of heavy mesons with logarithmic confining potential in a light-front quark model

Using the variational principle, we systematically investigate the mass spectra and wave functions of both 1⁢𝑆 and 2⁢𝑆 state heavy pseudoscalar (𝑃) and vector (𝑉) mesons within the light-front quark model. This approach incorporates a Coulomb plus logarithmic confinement potential to accurately describe the constituent quark and antiquark dynamics. Additionally, spin hyperfine interactions are introduced perturbatively to compute the masses of pseudoscalar and vector mesons. The present analyses of the 1⁢𝑆 and 2⁢𝑆 states require the consideration of mixing between them to account for empirical constraints. These constraints include the mass gap Δ⁢𝑀 𝑃 >Δ⁢𝑀 𝑉 , where Δ⁢𝑀 𝑃⁡(𝑉) =𝑀$^{2⁢𝑆}_{𝑃⁡(𝑉)}$−𝑀$^{1⁢𝑆}_{𝑃⁡(𝑉)}$ and the hierarchy of the decay constants 𝑓 1⁢𝑆 >𝑓 2⁢𝑆 . We find the optimal value of the mixing angle to be 𝜃 =1⁢8°, significantly enhancing the consistency between our spectroscopic predictions and the experimental data compiled by the Particle Data Group. Furthermore, based on the predicted mass, the newly observed resonance 𝐵 𝐽⁡ (5840) could be assigned as a 2 1⁢ 𝑆 0 state in the 𝐵 meson family. The study also reports various pertinent observables, including twist-two distribution amplitudes, electromagnetic form factors, charge radii, 𝜉 moments, and transition form factors that are found to be consistent with both available lattice simulations and experimental data. In addition, our predicted branching ratios for the channels of 𝐵 + →𝜏 + ⁢𝜈 𝜏 as well as rare decays of 𝐵 0 and 𝐵$^0_𝑠$ appear in accordance with experimental data.

Charmonium χ c 0 and χ c 2 resonances in coupled-channel scattering from lattice QCD

In order to explore the spectrum of hidden-charm scalar and tensor resonances, we study meson-meson scattering with J P C = 0 + + , 2 + + in the charmonium energy region using lattice QCD. Employing a light-quark mass corresponding to m π ≈ 391 MeV , we determine coupled-channel scattering amplitudes up to around 4100 MeV considering all kinematically relevant channels consisting of a pair of open-charm mesons or a charmonium meson with a light meson. A single isolated scalar resonance near 4000 MeV is found with large couplings to D D ¯ , D s D ¯ s and the kinematically closed D * D ¯ * channel. A single tensor resonance at a similar mass couples strongly to D D ¯ , D D ¯ * and D * D ¯ * . We compare the extracted resonances to contemporary experimental candidate states, previous lattice results and theoretical modeling. In contrast to several other studies, we do not find any significant feature in the scalar amplitudes between the ground state χ c 0 ( 1 P ) and the resonance found around 4000 MeV. First Measurement of Λ c Baryon Production in Au + Au Collisions at s N N = 200 GeV

Herein we report on the first measurement of the charmed baryon Λ c ± production at midrapidity ( | y | < 1 ) in Au + Au collisions at s NN = 200 GeV collected by the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The Λ c / D 0 [denoting ( Λ c + + Λ c - ) / ( D 0 + D ¯ 0 ) ] yield ratio is measured to be 1.08 ± 0.16 ( stat ) ± 0.26 ( sys ) in the 0%–20% most central Au + Au collisions for the transverse momentum ( p T ) range 3 < p T < 6 GeV / c . This is significantly larger than the pythia model calculations for p + p collisions. The measured Λ c / D 0 ratio, as a function of p T and collision centrality, is comparable to the baryon-to-meson ratios for light and strange hadrons in Au + Au collisions. Model calculations including coalescence hadronization for charmed baryon and meson formation reproduce the features of our measured Λ c / D 0 ratio.

Strange Mesons and Gluonic Excitations

In the standard model of particle physics, the interactions between the fundamental constituents of nuclear matter, quarks and gluons, are governed by the theory of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). A central goal of nuclear physics is to understand how hadrons, such as protons and neutrons, are formed from these underlying quark and gluon degrees of freedom. A hadron is primarily constructed from three quarks or a quark-antiquark pair; however, the theory of QCD allows for much more exotic configurations. One of the predicted exotic configurations is known as a hybrid meson, which contains an excited gluonic field in addition to the usual quark-antiquark pair. This project aims to search for and study these gluonic excitations using the Gluonic Excitation (GlueX) experiment at Jefferson Lab in Newport News, VA. The discovery potential of the experiment will be significantly extended by studying the quark flavor composition of the meson spectrum through the completion and use of an enhanced detector to identify mesons containing strange quarks. The unprecedented statistical precision of the data collected at GlueX will allow us to search for a pattern of light-quark hybrid mesons, providing new insight into the interactions that bind the fundamental quarks and gluons into the hadrons we observe in nature.

Exclusive photoproduction of excited ρ mesons decaying to four pions in ultraperipheral Pb–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV

The intense photon fluxes from relativistic nuclei provide an opportunity to study photonuclear interactions in ultraperipheral collisions. In particular, it allows for the investigations of excited, light-flavour vector mesons. The measurement of coherently photoproduced 𝜋⁺𝜋 − 𝜋⁺𝜋 − final states in ultraperipheral Pb–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV is presented for the first time. The cross section, d𝜎/d𝑦, times the branching ratio (𝜌 → 𝜋⁺𝜋⁺𝜋 − 𝜋 − ) is found to be 47.8 ± 2.3 (stat.) ± 7.7 (syst.) mb in the rapidity interval |𝑦| < 0.5. The invariant mass distribution is not well described with a single Breit-Wigner resonance without an interference term. Including in- terference with a non-resonant contribution results in the mass and width values being too far from those reported in PDG, while the production of two interfering resonances, 𝜌(1450) and 𝜌(1700), also provides a good description of the data. The values of the masses (𝑚) and widths (Γ) of the resonances extracted from the fit assuming two interfering resonances are 𝑚₁ = 1385 ± 14 (stat.) ± 3 (syst.) MeV/𝑐², Γ₁ = 431 ± 36 (stat.) ± 82 (syst.) MeV/𝑐², 𝑚₂ = 1663 ± 13 (stat.) ± 22 (syst.) MeV/𝑐² and Γ₂ = 357 ± 31 (stat.) ± 49 (syst.) MeV/𝑐², respectively. The measured cross sections times the branching ratios are compared to recent theoretical predictions.

Assessment and Requirements of Nuclear Reaction Databases for GCR Transport in the Atmosphere and Structures

The transport properties of galactic cosmic rays (GCR) in the atmosphere, material structures, and human body (self-shielding) am of interest in risk assessment for supersonic and subsonic aircraft and for space travel in low-Earth orbit and on interplanetary missions. Nuclear reactions, such as knockout and fragmentation, present large modifications of particle type and energies of the galactic cosmic rays in penetrating materials. We make an assessment of the current nuclear reaction models and improvements in these model for developing required transport code data bases. A new fragmentation data base (QMSFRG) based on microscopic models is compared to the NUCFRG2 model and implications for shield assessment made using the HZETRN radiation transport code. For deep penetration problems, the build-up of light particles, such as nucleons, light clusters and mesons from nuclear reactions in conjunction with the absorption of the heavy ions, leads to the dominance of the charge Z = 0, 1, and 2 hadrons in the exposures at large penetration depths. Light particles are produced through nuclear or cluster knockout and in evaporation events with characteristically distinct spectra which play unique roles in the build-up of secondary radiation's in shielding. We describe models of light particle production in nucleon and heavy ion induced reactions and make an assessment of the importance of light particle multiplicity and spectral parameters in these exposures.

Dark matter through the quark vector current portal

We consider models of light dark matter coupled to quarks through a vector current interaction. For low energies, these models must be treated through the effective couplings to mesons, which are implemented here through the chiral Lagrangian. We find the rates of dark matter annihilation and decay to the light mesons, and find the expected photon spectrum from the decay of the hadrons. We compare to current and future observations, and show that there is a significant discovery reach for these models.
