The Measurement of Shear Strain in Impact Ice Using a Modified Lap Joint Test and Digital Image Correlation

The results of ice adhesion testing efforts are typically quantified using the maximum shear stress sustained at the interface before the ice detaches from the underlying substrate. While this singular value can be useful for understanding the role icing wind tunnel conditions and substrate surface properties have on the strength of the ice-substrate interface, it does not capture the mechanical behavior of the ice during an experiment. To better understand the deformation of the ice sample and ice-substrate interface during testing, digital image correlation was applied to the lap-joint shear test methodology utilized at NASA Glenn Research Center. Preparation of the sample surface for digital image correlation, initial parsing of the correlation data, and the time synchronization of data from multiple sources are discussed. Using the directional components of deformation measured via digital image correlation, a novel approach to calculating the interfacial shear strain is presented. Results from analyzing several impact ice samples consistently reveals a non-linear response in the ice during mechanical loading which occurs prior to sample delamination, a behavior not observable in the force and displacement data gathered from the testing apparatus. Both the full and small angle forms of the engineering shear strain are evaluated, with the full shear strain form providing considerably lower noise levels. The transition of sample response from near the interface to the bulk behavior of the ice under shear loading is discussed with results from several samples being presented.

Photoelastic studies of advanced lap joint concept

Photoelasticity was introduced as a quantitative tool in the experimental stress analysis of anisotropic birefringent composite model materials. The investigation was divided into three parts: (1) separation of principal stresses or strains, (2) photoelastic calibration, and (3) development of model-prototype relations.

Large-scale Advanced Propfan (LAP) performance, acoustic and weight estimation, January, 1984

In comparison to turbo-prop applications, the Prop-Fan is designed to operate in a significantly higher range of aircraft flight speeds. Two concerns arise regarding operation at very high speeds: aerodynamic performance and noise generation. This data package covers both topics over a broad range of operating conditions for the eight (8) bladed SR-7L Prop-Fan. Operating conditions covered are: Flight Mach Number 0 - 0.85; blade tip speed 600-800 ft/sec; and cruise power loading 20-40 SHP/D2. Prop-Fan weight and weight scaling estimates are also included.

Lapping and Polishing an Elliptical Bore

Numerically controlled milling machine modified to make head reciprocate. Modification accomplished by removal of original milling head from machine and by mounting vertical slide in its place. Vertical slide driven up and down by connecting rod bolted off-center to drive pulley. Pulley driven by belt from variable-speed electric motor. Milling-machine head then attached to vertical slide. Mechanism allowed independent control of reciprocating surface speed through variation of speed of electric motor.

The effects of molecular weight on the single lap shear creep and constant strain rate behavior of thermoplastic polyimidesulfone adhesive

The bonded shear creep and constant strain rate behaviors of zero, one, and three percent endcapped thermoplastic polyimidesulfone adhesive were examined at room and elevated temperatures. Endcapping was accomplished by the addition of phthalic anhydrides. The primary objective was to determine the effects of molecular weight on the mechanical properties of the adhesive. Viscoelastic and nonlinear elastic constitutive equations were utilized to model the adhesive. Ludwik's and Crochet's relations were used to describe the experimental failure data. The effects of molecular weight changes on the above mentioned mechanical behavior were assessed. The viscoelastic Chase-Goldsmith and elastic nonlinear relations gave a good fit to the experimental stress strain behavior. Crochet's relations based on Maxwell and Chase-Goldsmith models were fit to delayed failure data. Ludwik's equations revealed negligible rate dependence. Ultimate stress levels and the safe levels for creep stresses were found to decrease as molecular weight was reduced.

Light Absorbing Particle (LAP) Measurements in the Lower Stratosphere

This viewgraph presentation covers the capabilities and design of the Single Particle Soot Photometer (SP-2), and reviews its role on the Sage III Ozone Loss Validation Experiment (SOLVE II) field campaign during 2003. On SOLVE II the SP-2 was carried into the Arctic onboard a DC-8 aircraft, in order to determine the size distribution of light-absorbing and non light-absorbing particles in the stratosphere. Graphs and tables relate some of the results from SOLVE II.

The Adhesion Strength of Impact Ice Measured Using a Modified Lap Joint Test

Numerous methodologies have been utilized to measure the adhesion strength of impact ice, and the data reported in the literature varies significantly from test to test. In order to initiate an investigation to determine the cause of this disparity, a new test methodology has been developed and utilized in the Icing Research Tunnel at the NASA Glenn Research Center. Data was obtained while varying the temperature, test section velocity, and cloud droplet mean volumetric diameter. The first data set acquired using this new test method is presented. New trends demonstrate the effect of annealing ice samples, with temperature being a key variable. Observations during the test and analysis of the results suggest the presence of large residual stresses in the samples.

50,000 Laps Around Mars: Navigating the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter Through the Extended Missions (January 2009 - March 2017)

Orbiting Mars since March 2006, the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) spacecraft continues to perform valuable science observations, provide telecommunication relay for surface assets, and characterize landing sites for future missions. Previous papers reported on the navigation of MRO from interplanetary cruise through the end of the Primary Science Phase (PSP) in December 2008 and on maneuvers performed through November 2016. This paper highlights the navigation of MRO from January 2009 through its 50,000th orbit around Mars on March 27, 2017, an eight-year period covering the Extended Science Phase, the first three extended missions, and a portion of the fourth extended mission which began on October 1, 2016. Since the beginning of the PSP in November 2006, MRO’s navigation performance has continued to exceed expectations. Over that period of time, the mission has returned over 300 terabytes of data.
