Electronic structure, and magnetic and superconducting pairing tendencies of the alternating single layer–bilayer stacking nickelate La 5 ⁢Ni 3 ⁢O 11 under pressure

Nickelates have continued to surprise since their unconventional superconductivity was discovered. Recently, the layered nickelate La 5 ⁢Ni 3 ⁢O 11 with hybrid single-layer and bilayer stacking showed superconductivity under high pressure. This compound combines features of single-layer La 2 ⁢NiO 4 and bilayer La 3 ⁢Ni 2 ⁢O 7 , but its pairing mechanism remains to be understood. Motivated by this finding, here we report a comprehensive theoretical study of this system. Our density functional theory calculations reveal that the undistorted P4/mmm phase without pressure is unstable due to three distortion modes. As pressure increases, these modes are suppressed, leading to the high-symmetry P4/mmm phase without NiO 6 octahedron tilting. Moreover, the “charge transfer” between the single-layer and bilayer sublattices was observed, leading to hole doping in the single-layer blocks. Our random-phase approximation calculations indicate a leading 𝑑 𝑥 2 −𝑦 2 -wave pairing state that arises from spin-fluctuation scattering between Fermi surface states mainly originating from the single-layer blocks and additional weaker contributions from the bilayer blocks. These spin fluctuations could be detected by inelastic neutron scattering as a strong peak at 𝐪 = (𝜋,𝜋). Our findings distinguish La 5 ⁢Ni 3 ⁢O 11 from other nickelate superconductors discovered so far and the high-𝑇 𝑐 cuprates. We also discuss both similarities and differences between La 5⁢ Ni 3 ⁢O 11 and other hybrid stacking nickelates.

Quantum critical point followed by Kondo-like behavior due to Cu substitution in the itinerant antiferromagnet La 2 ⁢(Cu 𝑥 ⁢Ni 1−𝑥 ) 7

La 2 ⁢Ni 7 is an itinerant magnetic system with a small ordered moment of ∼ 0.1⁢µ 𝐵 /Ni and a series of antiferromagnetic (AFM) transitions at 𝑇 1 = 61.0K, 𝑇 2 = 56.5K, and 𝑇 3 = 42.2K. 𝑀 ⁡(𝐻), and 𝜌 ⁡(𝐻) isotherms as well as constant field 𝑀⁡ (𝑇) and 𝜌 ⁡(𝑇) measurements on single-crystalline samples manifest a complex, anisotropic 𝐻−𝑇 phase diagram with multiple phase lines. Here, in this study, we present the growth and characterization of single crystals of the La 2 ⁢(Cu 𝑥 ⁢Ni 1−𝑥 ) 7 series for 0 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 0.181. We measured powder x-ray diffraction and composition, as well as anisotropic temperature- and field-dependent resistivity, temperature- and field-dependent magnetization, and temperature-dependent heat capacity on these single crystals. Using the measured data we infer a transition temperature-composition (𝑇−𝑥) phase diagram for this system to study the evolution of the AFM ordering upon Cu substitution. For 0 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 0.097, the system remains magnetically ordered at base temperature with 𝑥 ≤ 0.012, showing signs of multiple AFM ordering temperatures. For the higher substitution levels 0.125 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 0.181, there are no signatures of magnetic ordering, but anomalous features in resistance and heat capacity data are observed which are consistent with the Kondo effect in this system. The intermediate 𝑥 = 0.105 sample lies between the magnetic ordered and the Kondo regime and is in the vicinity of the AFM quantum critical point (QCP). Thus, La 2⁢ (Cu 𝑥 ⁢Ni 1−𝑥 ) 7 is an example of a small moment system that can be tuned through a QCP. Given these data combined with the fact that the La 2⁢ Ni 7 structure has kagomelike, Ni sublattices running perpendicular to the crystallographic 𝑐 axis, and a predicted 3⁢𝑑-electron flat band that contributes to the density of states near the Fermi energy, La 2 ⁢(Cu 𝑥 ⁢Ni 1−𝑥 ) 7 becomes a promising system to host and study exotic physics.

Effect of Ni substitution on the fragile magnetic system La 5 Co 2 Ge 3

La 5⁢ Co 2 ⁢Ge 3 is an itinerant ferromagnet with a Curie temperature T C of ~3.8K and a remarkably small saturated moment of 0.1µ B /Co. Here we present the growth and characterization of single crystals of the La 5 ⁢(Co 1–x⁢ Ni x ) 2 Ge 3 series for 0.00 ≤ x ≤ 0.186. Here we measured powder x-ray diffraction, composition as well as anisotropic temperature-dependent resistivity, temperature and field-dependent magnetization along with heat capacity on these single crystals. We also measured muon-spin rotation/relaxation (μ⁢SR) for some Ni substitutions (x = 0.027,0.036,0.074) to study the evolution of internal field with Ni substitution. Using the measured data we infer a low temperature, transition temperature-composition phase diagram for La 5 ⁢(Co 1–x ⁢Ni x ) 2 Ge 3 . We find that T C is suppressed for low dopings, x ≤ 0.014; whereas for 0.036 ≤ x ≤ 0.186, the samples are antiferromagnetic with a Néel temperature T N that goes through a weak and shallow maximum (T N ~ 3.4K for x~0.07) and then gradually decreases to 2.4 K by x = 0.186. For intermediate Ni substitutions, 0.016 ≤ x ≤ 0.027, two transition temperatures are inferred with T N >T C . Whereas the T–x phase diagram for La 5 ⁢(Co 1–x ⁢Ni x ) 2 Ge 3 and the T–p phase diagram determined for the parent La 5 ⁢Co 2 ⁢Ge 3 under hydrostatic pressure are grossly similar, changing from a low-doping or low-pressure ferromagnetic (FM) ground state to a high-doped or high-pressure antiferromagnetic (AFM) state, perturbation by Ni substitution enabled us to identify an intermediate doping regime where both FM and AFM transitions occur.

High oxygen pressure floating zone growth and crystal structure of the metallic nickelates R4Ni3O10 ( R=La,Pr )

Single crystals of the metallic Ruddlesden-Popper trilayer nickelates R 4 Ni 3 O 10 ( R = La , Pr ) were successfully grown using an optical-image floating zone furnace under oxygen pressure ( p O 2 ) of 20 bar for La 4 Ni 3 O 10 and 140 bar for Pr 4 Ni 3 O 10 . Furthermore, a combination of synchrotron and laboratory x-ray single-crystal diffraction, high-resolution synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction and measurements of physical properties revealed that R 4 Ni 3 O 10 ( R = La , Pr ) crystallizes in the monoclinic P 2 1 / a ( Z = 2 ) space group at room temperature, and that a metastable orthorhombic phase ( Bmab ) can be trapped by postgrowth rapid cooling. Both La 4 Ni 3 O 10 and Pr 4 Ni 3 O 10 crystals undergo a metal-to-metal transition (MMT) below room temperature. In the case of Pr 4 Ni 3 O 10 , the MMT is found at 157.6 K. For La 4 Ni 3 O 10 , the MMT depends on the lattice symmetry: 147.5 K for Bmab vs 138.6 K for P 2 1 / a . Lattice anomalies were found at the MMT that, when considered together with the pronounced dependence of the transition temperature on subtle structural differences between Bmab and P 2 1 / a phases, demonstrate a not insignificant coupling between electronic and lattice degrees of freedom in these trilayer nickelates.

Magnetic polarons and spin-glass behavior in insulating La 1-x Sr x CoO 3 (x = 0.125 and 0.15)

The evolution of magnetic polarons in Sr doped La Co O 3 ( La 1 - x Sr x Co O 3 ) single crystal and polycrystalline samples are investigated by employing dc and ac magnetic measurement and small angle neutron scattering (SANS) techniques. The effect of magnetic field and temperature on magnetic polarons is experimentally studied for La 0.875 Sr 0.125 Co O 3 and La 0.85 Sr 0.15 Co O 3 compounds that belong to the spin glass insulating regime of the broader compositional phase diagram of this system. Langevin analyses of the isothermal magnetization curves in the notional paramagnetic regime prove the existence of magnetic polarons with large moments. The dc field superimposed ac susceptibility data and the analysis of the glassy dynamics prove that the size of polarons in 15% Sr doped crystal increase as the field is increased while the field effect is not visible in the 12.5% Sr doped crystal. A polycrystalline sample of La 0.85 Sr 0.15 Co O 3 is analyzed by SANS experiments, which confirm nonzero correlation length at temperatures far above the macroscopic ordering temperature and hence the presence of magnetic polarons.

LA-R43S6-L1 Postshot Report [Slides]

The Ranchero LA-R43S6-L1 test (formerly referred to as LA-43S-L1. The R specifically designates it is a Ranchero device and the 6 indicates a 6” high explosive charge diameter in anticipation of using larger diameters in the future.) was conducted on 3/8/17 with good success. The experiment was the first test of a “Swooped” Ranchero flux compression generator (FCG), and the load for the test was an aluminum imploding liner. In addition to the swoop, the stator was anodized to provide an insulating layer instead of one or more layers of polyethylene as had been the case for all earlier Ranchero tests. Using the Firing point TA-39-88 capacitor bank, 3.5 MA was delivered to the FCG for the initial magnetic field, and 36.4 MA were delivered to the load having an initial inductance of 2.5 nH. Implosion speeds over 1.1 cm/us were recorded, which exceeds previous LANL solid liner experimental results. The test was diagnosed with 18 PDV channels, 12 of which recorded liner implosion data, and the other 6 of which tracked the FCG armature during flux compression. These armature expansion data recorded during flux compression are the first of their kind, and it was previously unknown, due to unknown effects of the SF 6 in the flux compression volume, whether or not the expansion could be recorded using the PDV technique. Post shot 2D MHD calculations employed a complete external circuit model, and an improved flux diffusion model not available prior to the test. Results from these simulations show very good agreement with the experimental result. Four PDV channels recorded the liner implosion viewed radially outward from the center of the liner. All four of these probes recorded implosion velocities greater that 1 cm/µs, with the cylindrical center displaced by ~2 mm from actual center. Four PDV channels looked at +10° angles from the CMU wall, and four looked at -10° angles. A glide plane interaction is shown moving toward the center of the liner in MHD calculations, and PDV probes provide confirmation. The high explosive (HE) in the LA-R43S6-L1 test was PBX 9501 which had to be glued together in many pieces, and the test was preceded by a camera test to verify that the PBX 9501 could be assembled with acceptable tolerance in glue joints to prevent severing the armature during expansion. The camera test verified an acceptable armature performance, and results are given in complete detail in a post shot report LA-UR-19-20124, and summarized here. This report provides complete detail of the considerable body of data obtained on the test and in the post shot calculations. It is prepared in Power Point for ease of preparation and future review. Shot documentation available in the LANL on-line library are included as references, and non-referenceable documents will be cited and stored in an LA- R43S6-L1 post shot folder stored on an M-6 shared drive. Fabrication drawings are also maintained in an M-6 shared drive and paper files are available from M-6 personnel. This report will be maintained as a PowerPoint document on the shared drive, as well, since included movies will play and graphs from Excel files retain information in the PowerPoint versions. PDF versions are required for clearance and are not to large to send by e-mail.

Net-zero Microgrid Program Report: Microrred de la Montaña Feasibility Study (Executive Summary Extended)

This feasibility study provides the technical and economic rationale for the Microrred de la Montaña as a viable solution for supplying reliable and resilient electricity to an underserved region in Puerto Rico – a region that is the first to be disconnected from the grid and the last to be restored, enduring months long outages. It begins the process of the development of the microgrid through conceptual design, engineering, detailed electrical design, implementation, and operation. The Microrred de la Montaña is organized under the governance of the Cooperativa Hidroeléctrica de la Montaña (Cooperativa) which has legal status as a cooperative and power provider under the laws of Puerto Rico. The members are the municipalities of Adjuntas, Jayuya, Lares and Utuado with a combined population of 90,000. These municipalities are in central Puerto Rico – a mountainous region that is extremely vulnerable to weather events and excessive, long-duration power outages and are among the poorest and most disadvantaged regions in Puerto Rico. Funding from external sources is necessary to acquire the resources for a resilient power delivery system. Regulatory support is necessary to establish operational relationships with the incumbent power providers. The Microrred de la Montaña is envisioned as a resilient microgrid that manages distributed energy resources – local solar, storage, and hydroelectricity over an upgraded distribution network within the boundaries of four municipalities. This feasibility study provides the results of an extensive techno-economic analysis to form a sound basis for decision-making by community leaders, their constituents, funding and investment agencies, and regulators to realize the benefits that are achievable by fully implementing the design and planning recommended for the Microrred de la Montaña.

Magnetic La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 Membranes Synthesized by Etching a Sr 3 Al 2 O 6 Sacrificial Layer Using an Intermediary Manganite Protection Layer

The integration of perovskite oxides onto flexible substrates has witnessed significant advancements owing to the development of an epitaxial lift-off technique utilizing a Sr 3 Al 2 O 6 sacrificial layer. However, Sr 3 Al 2 O 6 is susceptible to instability in both air and high-temperature oxygen atmospheres, potentially leading to degradation during the growth of the functional oxide layer. In this study, we investigate the use of an oxygen-deficient La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 as capping layer, and demonstrate its ability to stabilize Sr 3 Al 2 O 6 films in ambient air. We successfully synthesized freestanding La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 membranes by etching this sacrificial layer and transferring them onto flexible polymer substrates. Importantly, the magnetic properties of the La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 films are preserved in these membranes. Furthermore, our results underline that employing a thin manganite capping layer ensures both high structural quality and the preservation of functional properties in the resulting membranes.
