Inclusive production cross sections at N 3 LO

We present for the first time the inclusive cross section for associated Higgs boson production with a massive gauge boson at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order in QCD. Furthermore, we introduce n3loxs, a public, numerical program for the evaluation of inclusive cross sections at the third order in the strong coupling constant. Our tool allows to derive predictions for charged- and neutral-current Drell-Yan production, gluon- and bottom-quark-fusion Higgs boson production and Higgs boson associated production with a heavy gauge boson. We discuss perturbative and parton distribution function (PDF) uncertainties of the aforementioned processes. We perform a comparison of global PDF sets for a variety of process including associated Higgs boson production and observe 1σ deviations among predictions for several processes.

A common isotopic reservoir for amoeboid olivine aggregates (AOAs) and calcium-aluminum-rich inclusions (CAIs) revealed by Ti and Cr isotopic compositions

Amoeboid olivine aggregates (AOAs) are the most abundant type of refractory inclusions found in most carbonaceous chondrite groups. AOAs are thought to be genetically related to calcium-aluminum-rich inclusions (CAIs) and potential chondrule precursor components, although the precise physical and temporal details of AOA formation and their relationship to other chondritic components remain unclear. In this study, we measured the chromium and titanium isotopic compositions of eight AOAs from four different CV chondrites with the goal of evaluating potential genetic links between AOAs, CAIs, and chondrules. These are the first Cr and Ti isotopic data reported beyond a single AOA previously measured for Cr and a different single AOA previously measured for Ti. The results presented here show that the ε 54 Cr and ε 50 Ti isotopic compositions of AOAs are indistinguishable from those of CAIs, suggesting that AOAs and CAIs formed from a common region of the disk. Here, we also demonstrate, based on the comparison of the Cr and Ti isotopic composition of AOAs to previously measured chondrules, that mixing between AOAs and an NC compositional endmember alone cannot fully explain the range of measured chondrule compositions. Although AOAs may have been important chondrule precursor components along with AOA olivine, CAIs, fragments of earlier generation chondrules, and fine-grained matrix material, this observation requires another currently unknown component to be involved in chondrule formation.

Interplaying mechanisms behind inclusive jet R and extraction of jet energy loss distributions

The observed inclusive jet suppression in heavy-ion collisions at LHC has a very weak p T dependence over a large range of p T =50–1000 GeV and is almost independent of the colliding energy, though the initial energy density of the bulk medium has increased from √s=2.76 to 5.02 TeV by about 20%. This interesting phenomenon is investigated in the linear Boltzmann transport (LBT) model for jet propagation in an event-by-event 3+1D hydro background. We show that the p T dependence of jet R AA is determined by the initial spectrum in p+p collisions and p T dependence of jet energy loss. Furthermore, jet energy loss distributions for inclusive jet and γ-jet at both LHC energies are extracted directly from experimental data through the state-of-art Bayesian analysis. Additionally, the averaged jet energy loss has a weak p T dependence and the scaled jet energy loss distributions have a large width, both of which are consistent with the LBT simulations and indicate that jet quenching is caused by only a few out-of-cone jet medium scatterings.

Comparison of inclusive and photon-tagged jet suppression in 5.02 TeV Pb+Pb collisions with ATLAS

Parton energy loss in the quark–gluon plasma (QGP) is studied with a measurement of photon-tagged jet production in 1.7 nb –1 of Pb+Pb data and 260 pb –1 of pp data, both at $\sqrt{^S{\text{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV, with the ATLAS detector. The process $pp$ → γ +jet+X and its analogue in Pb+Pb collisions is measured in events containing an isolated photon with transverse momentum ($p_{\text{T}}$) above 50 GeV and reported as a function of jet $p_{\text{T}}$. This selection results in a sample of jets with a steeply falling $p_{\text{T}}$ distribution that are mostly initiated by the showering of quarks. The $pp$ and Pb+Pb measurements are used to report the nuclear modification factor, $R_{\text{AA}}$, and the fractional energy loss, $S_{\text{loss}}$, for photon-tagged jets. In addition, the results are compared with the analogous ones for inclusive jets, which have a significantly smaller quark-initiated fraction. The $R_{\text{AA}}$ and $S_{\text{loss}}$ values are found to be significantly different between those for photon-tagged jets and inclusive jets, demonstrating that energy loss in the QGP is sensitive to the colour-charge of the initiating parton. Finally, the results are also compared with a variety of theoretical models of colour-charge-dependent energy loss.

Measurements of inclusive J/ψ production at midrapidity and forward rapidity in Pb–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV

The measurements of the inclusive J/ψ yield at midrapidity (|y| < 0.9) and forward rapidity (2.5 < y < 4) in Pb–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC are reported. The inclusive J/ψ production yields and nuclear modification factors, R AA , are measured as a function of the collision centrality, J/ψ transverse momentum (p T ), and rapidity. The J/ψ average transverse momentum and squared transverse momentum ($\langle$p T $\rangle$ and $\langle$$p^{2}_{T}$$\rangle$) are evaluated as a function of the centrality at midrapidity. Compared to the previous ALICE publications, here the entire Pb–Pb collisions dataset collected during the LHC Run 2 is used, which improves the precision of the measurements and extends the p T coverage. The p T -integrated R AA shows a hint of an increasing trend towards unity from semicentral to central collisions at midrapidity, while it is flat at forward rapidity. The p T -differential R AA shows a strong suppression at high p T with less suppression at low p T where it reaches a larger value at midrapidity compared to forward rapidity. The ratio of the p T -integrated yields of J/ψ to those of D 0 mesons is reported for the first time for the central and semicentral event classes at midrapidity. Model calculations implementing charmonium production via the coalescence of charm quarks and antiquarks during the fireball evolution (transport models) or in a statistical approach with thermal weights are in good agreement with the data at low p T . At higher p T , the data are well described by transport models and a model based on energy loss in the strongly-interacting medium produced in nuclear collisions at the LHC.

Modeling inclusive electron-nucleus scattering with Bayesian artificial neural networks

We introduce a Bayesian protocol based on artificial neural networks that is suitable for modeling inclusive electron-nucleus scattering on a variety of nuclear targets with quantified uncertainties. Unlike previous applications in the field, which directly parameterize the cross sections, our approach employs artificial neural networks to represent the longitudinal and transverse response functions. In contrast to cross sections, which depend on the incoming energy, scattering angle, and energy transfer, the response functions are determined solely by the energy and momentum transfer to the system, allowing the angular component to be treated analytically. We assess the accuracy and predictive power of our framework against the extensive data in the quasielastic inclusive electron-scattering database. Additionally, we present novel extractions of the longitudinal and transverse response functions and compare them with previous experimental analysis and nuclear ab-initio calculations.

Measurement of inclusive and differential cross sections for W + W − production in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV

Measurements at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV of the opposite-sign W boson pair production cross section in proton-proton collisions are presented. The data used in this study were collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC in 2022, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 34.8 fb -1 . Events are selected by requiring one electron and one muon of opposite charge. A maximum likelihood fit is performed on signal- and background-enriched data categories defined by the flavor and charge of the leptons, the number of jets, and number of jets originating from b quarks. The overall sensitivity is significantly better than that of previous results with a similar integrated luminosity. The improvement comes from a more refined control of experimental uncertainties and an improved fit strategy. An inclusive W + W - production cross section of 125.7 ± 5.6 pb is measured, in agreement with standard model predictions. Cross sections are also reported in a fiducial region close to that of the detector acceptance, both inclusively and differentially, as a function of the jet multiplicity in the event. For the first time in proton-proton collisions, WW events with zero, one, and at least two jets are studied simultaneously and compared with recent theoretical predictions.

Discrete Open-Shell Tris(bipyridinium radical cationic) Inclusion Complexes in the Solid State

In the solid state the properties of organic radicals depend heavily on radical-radical interactions that are influenced by the superstructure of the crystalline phase. Here, we report the synthesis and characterization of a substituted tetracationic cyclophane, cyclobis(paraquat-p-1,4- dimethoxyphenylene), and outline how its bisradical dicationic redox state associates with the methyl viologen radical cation (MV •+ ) to give a trisradical tricationic inclusion complex. The (super)structures of the reduced cyclophane and this 1:1 complex in the solid-state deviate from the analogous (super)structures observed for the reduced state of cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene) and that of its trisradical tricationic complex. Titration experiments with a range of guests reveal that the methoxy substituents on the para-xylenyl do not influence significantly of the binding affinity of the cyclophane for small neutral guests, whereas the affinity decreases by an order of magnitude for larger radical cationic guests such as MV •+ . X-Ray diffraction reveals that the solid- state structures of the tricationic trisradical complexes to be a discrete entity with weak intermolecular orbital overlap between the neighboring complexes. Transient nutation EPR experiment and DFT calculations confirm that the complex has a doublet spin configuration in the ground state as a result of the strong orbital overlap within the complex, while the quartet-state spin configuration is higher in energy and so is inaccessible at ambient temperature. The superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) measurement reveals that trisradical tricationic complexes interact antiferromagnetically (J/k = - 2.33 K) and form a 1D Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain along the a-axis in the crystal. Furthermore, these results offer new insights into the design and synthesis of organic magnetic materials based on host-guest inclusion complexes.

Fungal hyphae develop where titanomagnetite inclusions reach the surface of basalt grains

Nutrient foraging by fungi weathers rocks by mechanical and biochemical processes. Distinguishing fungal-driven transformation from abiotic mechanisms in soil remains a challenge due to complexities within natural field environments. We examined the role of fungal hyphae in the incipient weathering of granulated basalt from a three-year field experiment in a mixed hardwood-pine forest (S. Carolina) to identify alteration at the nanometer to micron scales based on microscopy-tomography analyses. Investigations of fungal-grain contacts revealed (i) a hypha-biofilm-basaltic glass interface coinciding with titanomagnetite inclusions exposed on the grain surface and embedded in the glass matrix and (ii) native dendritic and subhedral titanomagnetite inclusions in the upper 1–2 µm of the grain surface that spanned the length of the fungal-grain interface. We provide evidence of submicron basaltic glass dissolution occurring at a fungal-grain contact in a soil field setting. An example of how fungal-mediated weathering can be distinguished from abiotic mechanisms in the field was demonstrated by observing hyphal selective occupation and hydrolysis of glass-titanomagnetite surfaces. We hypothesize that the fungi were drawn to basaltic glass-titanomagnetite boundaries given that titanomagnetite exposed on or very near grain surfaces represents a source of iron to microbes. Furthermore, glass is energetically favorable to weathering in the presence of titanomagnetite. Our observations demonstrate that fungi interact with and transform basaltic substrates over a three-year time scale in field environments, which is central to understanding the rates and pathways of biogeochemical reactions related to nuclear waste disposal, geologic carbon storage, nutrient cycling, cultural artifact preservation, and soil-formation processes.

Flux-assisted polytypism in the [Na 2 Cl]GaQ 2 heterolayered salt-inclusion chalcogenide family

Two polytypic heterolayered salt-inclusion chalcogenides, o-[Na 2 Cl]GaQ 2 and t-[Na 2 Cl]GaQ 2 , were obtained via a NaCl/NaI flux-assisted synthesis, as part of an investigation of the Na–Ga–Q (Q = S and Se) system. The use of a different flux, NaBr/NaI, in the Na–Ga–Se system did not lead to the formation of salt-inclusion phases, but instead the novel Na 2 GaSe 3 and Na 4 Ga 2 Se 5 phases were obtained. Thermal and electronic properties of [Na 2 Cl]GaS 2 materials were investigated with differential scanning calorimetry, post-quenching ex situ powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), high-temperature PXRD, and enthalpy and electronic structure calculations via density functional theory. Those studies determined the absence of any temperature-induced phase transition between the o-[Na 2 Cl]GaS 2 and t-[Na 2 Cl]GaS 2 polytypic compounds. Moreover, herein we probed the suitability of the heterolayered [Na 2 Cl]GaS 2 single crystals as a sorbent for UO 2 2+ uptake and monitored this process by energy-dispersive and infrared spectroscopies and PXRD, which revealed that the [Na 2 Cl]+ insert could be exchanged with UO 2 2+ on the surface while the UO 2 2+ intercalation decomposes the [Na 2 Cl]GaS 2 structure.

Inclusive Search for Anomalous Single-Photon Production in MicroBooNE

We present an inclusive search for anomalous production of single-photon events from neutrino interactions in the MicroBooNE experiment. The search and its signal definition are motivated by the previous observation of a low-energy excess of electromagnetic shower events from the MiniBooNE experiment. We use the Wire-Cell reconstruction framework to select a sample of inclusive single-photon final-state interactions with a final efficiency and purity of 7.0% and 40.2%, respectively. We leverage simultaneous measurements of sidebands of charged current 𝜈 𝜇 interactions and neutral current interactions producing 𝜋 0 mesons to constrain signal and background predictions and reduce uncertainties. We perform a blind analysis using a dataset collected from February 2016 to July 2018, corresponding to an exposure of 6.34 × 10 20 protons on target from the Booster Neutrino Beam at Fermilab. In the full signal region, we observe agreement between the data and the prediction, with a goodness-of-fit 𝑝 value of 0.11. We then isolate a subsample of these events containing no visible protons, and observe 93 ± 22⁢(stat) ±35⁢(syst) data events above prediction, corresponding to just above 2⁢𝜎 local significance, concentrated at shower energies below 600 MeV.

Semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering on a polarized spin-1 target. II. Deuteron and spectator nucleon tagging

We develop the theoretical framework for semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering on a polarized spin-1 target and apply it to scattering on the polarized deuteron with spectator nucleon tagging. In Part I (previous article), we present the general form of the semi-inclusive cross section and polarization observables for the spin-1 target. In Part II (this article), we consider deep-inelastic scattering on the polarized deuteron with spectator nucleon tagging as a special case of target fragmentation. Methods of light-front quantization are employed to separate nuclear and hadronic structure in the high-energy process and achieve a composite description. The light-front wave function of the polarized deuteron is obtained from a rotationally covariant three-dimensional wave function in the center-of-mass frame of the proton-neutron system. The tagged structure functions are computed in the impulse approximation. The momentum and spin distribution of the active nucleon are controlled by the deuteron polarization and the detected spectator momentum (𝐷/𝑆 wave ratio). The cross section and spin asymmetries are evaluated for general deuteron polarization (vector and tensor, longitudinal and transverse) as functions of the spectator momentum. Tensor-polarized spin asymmetries of order unity are achieved for spectator momenta of approximately 300 MeV, which select configurations with a large 𝐷 wave. Sum rules for the tagged spin structure functions are derived. The results can be used for simulations of spectator tagging in future polarized fixed-target experiments (Jefferson Lab) or at the Electron-Ion Collider.

Inclusive breakup cross sections in reactions induced by the nuclides 6 He and 6,7 Li in the two-body cluster model

Calculations of inclusive α particle production are performed to interpret reaction experimental data induced by the two-neutron halo 6He and the isotopes 6,7 Li on different target nuclei. In this work, we have implemented the zero-range post-form DWBA to compute the elastic and nonelastic breakup cross sections. Integrated cross sections, angular distributions and spectra are presented. Projectiles are approximated as two-body clusters, namely 6 He as α+dineutron and 6 Li ( 7 Li) are interpreted as α+deuteron(triton). The São Paulo optical potential is employed in the calculation of the distorted wave functions for the incident channels, while standard phenomenological interactions are taken for the fragment-target interactions. Calculations for 6 Li and 7 Li furnish a good description of the data, while the reaction involving 6 He is found to be more complicated, where interpretation of the data must still be considered incomplete. The present analysis identifies an overall large contribution from inclusive breakup emission for all the cases studied.

Inclusive jet and hadron suppression in a multistage approach

We present a new study of jet interactions in the quark-gluon plasma created in high-energy heavy-ion collisions, using a multistage event generator within the jetscape framework. We focus on medium-induced modifications in the rate of inclusive jets and high transverse momentum (high-p T ) hadrons. Scattering-induced jet energy loss is calculated in two stages: a high virtuality stage based on the matter model, in which scattering of highly virtual partons modifies the vacuum radiation pattern, and a second stage at lower jet virtuality based on the LBT model, in which leading partons gain and lose virtuality by scattering and radiation. Coherence effects that reduce the medium-induced emission rate in the matter phase are also included. The TRENTO model is used for initial conditions, and the (2 + 1)dimensional VISHNU model is used for viscous hydrodynamic evolution. Jet interactions with the medium are modeled via 2-to-2 scattering with Debye screened potentials, in which the recoiling partons are tracked, hadronized, and included in the jet clustering. Holes left in the medium are also tracked and subtracted to conserve transverse momentum. Calculations of the nuclear modification factor (R AA ) for inclusive jets and high-p T hadrons are compared to experimental measurements at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Within this framework, we find that with one extra parameter which codifies the transition between stages of jet modification—along with the typical parameters such as the coupling in the medium, the start and stop criteria, etc.—we can describe these data at all energies for central and semicentral collisions without a rescaling of the jet transport coefficient q.

Bayesian inference analysis of jet quenching using inclusive jet and hadron suppression measurements

The JETSCAPE Collaboration reports a new determination of the jet transport parameter $\hat{q}$ in the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) using Bayesian inference, incorporating all available inclusive hadron and jet yield suppression data measured in heavy-ion collisions at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). This multi-observable analysis extends the previously published JETSCAPE Bayesian inference determination of $\hat{q}$, which was based solely on a selection of inclusive hadron suppression data. jetscape is a modular framework incorporating detailed dynamical models of QGP formation and evolution, and jet propagation and interaction in the QGP. Virtuality-dependent partonic energy loss in the QGP is modeled as a thermalized weakly coupled plasma, with parameters determined from Bayesian calibration using soft-sector observables. This Bayesian calibration of $\hat{q}$ utilizes active learning, a machine-learning approach, for efficient exploitation of computing resources. The experimental data included in this analysis span a broad range in collision energy and centrality, and in transverse momentum. In order to explore the systematic dependence of the extracted parameter posterior distributions, several different calibrations are reported, based on combined jet and hadron data; on jet or hadron data separately; and on restricted kinematic or centrality ranges of the jet and hadron data. Tension is observed in comparison of these variations, providing new insights into the physics of jet transport in the QGP and its theoretical formulation.

Measurement of inclusive electrons from open heavy-flavor hadron decays in p + p collisions at s = 200 GeV with the STAR detector

We report a new measurement of the production cross section for inclusive electrons from open heavy-flavor hadron decays as a function of transverse momentum (p T ) at midrapidity (|y| < 0.7) in p + p collisions at √s = 200 GeV. Overall, the result is presented for 2.5 < P T < 10 GeV/c with an improved precision above 6 GeV/c with respect to the previous measurements, providing more constraints on perturbative QCD calculations. Moreover, this measurement also provides a high-precision reference for measurements of nuclear modification factors for inclusive electrons from open-charm and -bottom hadron decays in heavy-ion collisions.

Measurement of cross sections for production of a $Z$ boson in association with a flavor-inclusive or doubly $b$-tagged large-radius jet in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = $13$ $\mathrm{TeV}$ with the ATLAS experiment

We present measurements of cross sections for production of a leptonically decaying $Z$ boson in association with a large-radius jet in 13 TeV proton-proton collisions at the LHC, using 36 fb –1 of data from the ATLAS detector. Integrated and differential cross sections are measured at particle level in both a flavor inclusive and a doubly $b$-tagged fiducial phase space. The large-radius jet mass and transverse momentum, its kinematic relationship to the Z boson, and the angular separation of $b$-tagged small-radius track jets within the large-radius jet are measured. This measurement constitutes an important test of perturbative quantum chromodynamics in kinematic and flavor configurations relevant to several Higgs boson and beyond-Standard-Model physics analyses. The results highlight issues with modeling of additional hadronic activity in the flavor-inclusive selection, and a distinction between flavor-number schemes in the $b$-tagged phase space.
