EG&G Florida, Inc., KSC base operations contractor Launch Readiness Assessment System

A computerized Launch Readiness Assessment System (LRAS) which compares 'current status' of readiness against the 'required status' of readiness for the Space Shuttle. The five subsystems of the LRAS are examined in detail. The LRAS Plan specifies the overall system requirements, procedures, and reports. The LRAS Manager drives the operation of the LRAS system. The Responding Units (RU) maintain support plans and procedures which specify the detail requirements for each mission or milestone. The Master Data Tables contain the milestone, responsible RU relationships, and requirements assessment categories. The LRAS Status System serves as the launch readiness assessment reporting system. The relationships between these subsystems are displayed in diagrams.

The "Universal propeller": built by Paragon Engineers, Inc., Baltimore, Md

At the request of the N.A.C.A. the "Universal Propeller" was operated and explained by the inventor, Mr. Spencer Heath, for the purpose of demonstrating the following features of design: 1) Elimination of continuously running gears, collars or bearings in the pitch control mechanism; 2) The use of engine power in place of manual labor in changing blade angle; 3) The absence of any structural limitation to the range of blade angles available and the possibility of limiting the blade travel between any two predetermined extreme positions; 4) Continuous indication on the instrument board of the blade position; 5) Automatic throttling of the engine while the propeller is passing through the position of neutral pitch.

Experience with turbulence interaction and turbulence-chemistry models at Fluent Inc.

This viewgraph presentation discusses (1) turbulence modeling: challenges in turbulence modeling, desirable attributes of turbulence models, turbulence models in FLUENT, and examples using FLUENT; and (2) combustion modeling: turbulence-chemistry interaction and FLUENT equilibrium model. As of now, three turbulence models are provided: the conventional k-epsilon model, the renormalization group model, and the Reynolds-stress model. The renormalization group k-epsilon model has broadened the range of applicability of two-equation turbulence models. The Reynolds-stress model has proved useful for strongly anisotropic flows such as those encountered in cyclones, swirlers, and combustors. Issues remain, such as near-wall closure, with all classes of models.

Multimedia Information eXchange for I-NET, Inc. at the Kennedy Space Center: A continuing study of the application of worldwideweb technology

Multimedia Information eXchange (MIX) is a multimedia information system that accommodates multiple data types and provides consistency across platforms. Information from all over the world can be accessed quickly and efficiently with the Internet-based system. I-NET's MIX uses the World Wide Web and Mosaic graphical user interface. Mosaic is available on all platforms used at I-NET's Kennedy Space Center (KSC) facilities. Key information system design concepts and benefits are reviewed. The MIX system also defines specific configuration and helper application parameters to ensure consistent operations across the entire organization. Guidelines and procedures for other areas of importance in information systems design are also addressed. Areas include: code of ethics, content, copyright, security, system administration, and support.

Commercial Implementation of Ultrasonic Velocity Imaging Methods via Cooperative Agreement Between NASA Lewis Research Center and Sonix, Inc.

This article describes the commercial implementation of ultrasonic velocity imaging methods developed and refined at NASA Lewis Research Center on the Sonix c-scan inspection system. Two velocity imaging methods were implemented: thickness-based and non-thickness-based reflector plate methods. The article demonstrates capabilities of the commercial implementation and gives the detailed operating procedures required for Sonix customers to achieve optimum velocity imaging results. This commercial implementation of velocity imaging provides a 100x speed increase in scanning and processing over the lab-based methods developed at LeRC. The significance of this cooperative effort is that the aerospace and other materials development-intensive industries which use extensive ultrasonic inspection for process control and failure analysis will now have an alternative, highly accurate imaging method commercially available.

Poco Graphite Inc. SuperSiC 0.25m Mirror Cryogenic Test Result

SuperSiC, a low areal density material, developed by POCO Graphite, have been used as mirror substrate for high energy lasers, laser radar systems, surveillance, telescopes, scan mirrors and satellites. SuperSiC has excellent thermal properties and cryogenic stability. It exhibits exceptional polishability for reflective optics with high strength, stiffness, and excellent thermal conductivity. A lightweighted 0.2-diameter polished SuperSic mirror was tested at cryogenic temperature at NASMSFC. Optical test results showed 6nm cry0 deformation from ambient to 30 degrees Kelvin and little to no change in its surface figure due to cry0 cycling.

2021 Prototype Manufacture and Installation Awardee: Pecos Wind Power, Inc.

Through the 2021 Competitiveness Improvement Project (CIP), Pecos Wind Power will manufacture a prototype of its 85-kilowatt (kW) horizontal-axis distributed wind turbine, the PW85, a new wind turbine that began development in 2017 when the company was founded. The PW85 wind turbine includes an industry-leading rotor diameter (30 meters) and full-span variable pitch blades to target a levelized cost of energy (LCOE) of $0.103/kilowatt-hour in low annual wind speeds (6 meters per second). This is 55% lower than the average small wind turbine project installed in 2018. The goal of this project is to spur the development of increasingly lower-cost, high-capacity-factor distributed wind turbines. As a result, Pecos Wind Power will manufacture and install wind turbines that increase the geographic area in which distributed wind power is cost competitive with retail-priced electricity and other distributed energy resources - primarily solar energy.

2021 Prototype Design Development Awardee: Accelerate Wind, Inc.

In the United States, rooftop photovoltaic systems can be installed on most commercial buildings. However, even if all available rooftop space is used, solar energy cannot satisfy the building's total energy demand. With many building owners trying to move toward net-zero-carbon-emission energy generation, these customers often have no way to achieve this goal on-site. Rooftop wind energy technology could be an option, but most rooftop wind turbines are not economically viable because they do not produce meaningful amounts of energy and are not likely to pay for themselves within their lifetime. Some rooftop wind turbine companies have attempted to exploit the fact that wind naturally speeds up at the edge of a roof; but, so far, these solutions have also struggled to produce significant energy because only a small portion of that wind can be captured so close to the edge of the roof.

ABF DFO with Technology Holding, Inc.

This Agile BioFoundry Directed Funding Opportunity project with Technology Holding and partners focuses on the development of both a strain of Pseudomonas putida KT2440 and a corresponding bioprocess to convert cellulosic sugars to beta-ketoadipic acid, which can be used in performance nylons and polyesters. Our approach follows the Design-Build-Test-Learn cycle wherein we have transferred learnings from muconic acid production in P. putida to develop a glucose and xylose-utilizing beta-ketoadipic acid production strain. This strain achieves 65 g/L of beta-ketoadipic acid at 0.7 g/L/hr and a C-mol yield of 0.40. We are currently on-boarding arabinose utilization as well. To identify non-intuitive strain modifications as well, we are deploying a beta-ketoadipic acid biosensor and building randomly barcoded transposon insertion sequencing (RB-TnSeq) libraries and gene over-expression libraries in beta-ketoadipic acid production strains. Moreover, we are using global metabolomics and other systems biology tools to identify off-target pathways. Lastly, we are scaling up beta-ketoadipic acid production to kg-scale production for Technology Holding to evaluate in performance polymers with their partners.
